The Geography of England

London: R.Dodsley, 1743. Hardcover - Full Brown Leather. "Done in the Manner of Gordon's Geographical grammar, each county being considered under the following heads.... To each county is prefix'd a compleat mapp from the latest and best observations, shewing the chief towns, parks, rivers and roads..." Little is known of the life and career of John Cowley, although he is described variously in reference works as engineer, geographer, factor to the Duke Of Argyll, and achieved the status of 'Geographer to His Majesty' (i.e geographer Royal). The little that is known of him derives from his maps and books published in the 1730 -40's. He produced several maps of Scotland and the Argyll estates, and also collaborated with Robert Dodsley, a notable, London Bookseller, to publish this account of 'The Geography of England'. Originally, 6 of the Maps were published in Dodsley's Periodical in 1740-41, 'the publick register; or, weekly magazine, but this enterprise soon failed, partly because of the imposition of stamp duty on newspapers, which required a paper which carried news to be stamped {taxed}. Dodsley had probably already commissioned the map engravings and topographic accounts, and decided to issue them as a separate publication. It was actually published in 1743 (Nov), although the title page states 1744. His Maps are based on the Robert Morden maps from Gordon's work, with some additional information. Although two copies of 'The Geography of England' are known to be held in Legal deposit Libraries, both are incomplete. Such attractive small maps are in great demand to be sold individually by dealers who 'break' a volume. I have seen individual maps selling for anything between £40 - £85 each. The condition of these are very good, with only a few with some flattened edge creasing. The entire Group of Maps include one for each County and 2 Large folding Maps to front and rear of book. The corner of text page 139 is missing, but text unaffected. A very decent clean copy, some marking to occasional pages. This copy has been rebound in a tasteful brown leather, with 5 raised bands, gilt medallions, compartment borders and title to base of spine. With new smart pastedown and endpapers in keeping with a period feel. A very scarce work and in excellent all round order pp: 271; 54 maps in total. . First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good +. Illus. by 54 Maps. 8vo.

The doctrine of fluxions : not only explaining the elements thereof, but also its application and use in the several parts of mathematics and natural philosophy

      J. Bettenham: and sold by W. Innys, 1743-01-01. 2nd edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 1st ed. Fine modern 3/4 leather binding, marbled boards. Fine binding and cover. New end pages. xvi, 300, [4] p., 10 folding plates. Collated. Clean, unmarked pages. Includes errata. Honeyman sale. Emerson's first book. Emerson was an important supporter of Newtonian mathematics. From the preface: "To say any thing in praise of the Method of Fluxions, or of its dignity and rank among the mathematical sciences, would be as needless as to describe the excellency of bright sunshine above the twinkling light of stars; since any one who is acquainted with the sciences will allow it to be a method of calculation incomparably superior to all other methods that ever were known or found out; and beyond which nothing further is to be hoped or expected. It lens its aid and assistance to all the other mathematical sciences, and that in their greatest wants and distresses: It opens and discovers to us the secrets and recesses of Nature, which have always before been locked up in obscurity and darkness. To this all the noble and valuable discoveries of the last and present age are entirely owing: And by this method Sir Isaac Newton, the worthy inventor, determined and settled the system of the whole visible World."

A fun aside. Emerson turned down FRS, stating: "It is a damned hard thing that a man should burn so many farthing candles as I have done, and then have to pay so much a year for the honour of F.R.S. after his name. When a man becomes eminent, he has to pay quarterly for it. This is the way ingenuity is rewarded in England. Damn them and their F.R.S. too.

Contemporary calf, ruled in gilt, expertly rebacked in matching style, spine gilt. Boards a bit rubbed and edgeworn, new endpapers. Save for an old stain on the final few leaves of the second part, internally clean and fresh. Very good overall. Ashley, a Barbados planter, published several works to encourage the British West India sugar trade. The present book requests further legislative assistance for the sugar producing colonies. Many of the questions addressed by Ashley center on trade with the British North colonies, whether sugar or rum can be exported directly, whether ships built in North America can be used in the sugar trade, and the like. A supplement to the second part (not present here) was also issued in 1743. EUROPEAN AMERICANA locates eight sets. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 740/19, 743/16. SABIN 2192, 2193. GOLDSMITHS 7779, 7979. Rome: Niccolò and Marco Pagliarini,, 1743. Con alcune ingegnose pratiche, e con la descrizione del trasporto dell' obelisco Vaticano, e di altri del cavaliere Domenico Fontana. Large folio (480 x 362 mm). Contemporary vellum, red morocco spine label. Engraved portrait, 54 engraved plates (4 double-page). Title-page, preface and explanatory text for plates in Italian and Latin. Binding a little soiled and worn, with neat repairs to corners, some spotting and dampstaining, a good copy. First edition of this fundamental work for the history of the restoration and maintenance of St Peter's Fabbrica and for an understanding of early building practice. The master mason and engineer Nicola Zabaglia (1664–1750) invented many ingenious mechanical devices to aid restoration. Here he illustrates his techniques, with the help of Giovanni Bottari and Lelio Cosatto. The mechanical devices, scaffolds and working tools here described would remain in use in the Roman building yard until the beginning of the twentieth century. The plates also illustrate the renowned achievement of Domenico Fontana in re-erecting the Vatican obelisk in 1589.
