"In it he objected to Cartesianism on the ground that it was unable to explain why Kepler's laws should hold." In his second book La Figure de la Terre (1738) he published the results of an expedition with the scientist Clairaut to Lapland to measure as accurately as possible the length of a degree of longitude, by which he was able to prove Newton's theory that the earth was flattened at the poles.         Pennsylvanische Nachrichten Von dem Reiche Christi / Anno 1742. - B. Ludewigs Wahrer Bericht, De dato Germantown, den 20. Feb. 1741/2.

- Meyer, Bibliogr. Handbuch Zinzendorf-Forschung A 159. - VD18 10358994. - Sabin 106359. - Alden/Landis, European Americana 742.221. - BBKL XIV, 509ff.

Library book plate on verso and perforation on title pages. 7 engraved frontispieces. Engraved plates. Quinzieme Edition. Internally, generally clean and unmarked. This work covers the history of Europe from 1637 to 1688 as seen through the eyes of Mohammed, a supposed Turkish spy. An enlightenment era work of some satire. Querard V-501. Barbier, II, 176.<br><br> The first edition of this work began publication in 1684, when a volume in Italian entitled "L&#39;esploratore turco" and a French version entitled "L&#39;espion du grand seigneur" were published in Paris by C. Barbin. Authorship is disputed, but it is generally agreed that the first fifty letters (the original four volumes)--were written by Marana. Barbier, on the authority of La Monnoye, ascribes two volumes which appeared in 1696 under title, "Suite de L&#39;espion turc", to C. Cotolendi. Cf. Barbier.         Travels into several Remote Nations of the world. In Four Parts. By Lemuel Gulliver, Firft a Surgeon, and then a Captain of feveral Ships. The fourth Edition, Corrected.

Printed for Charles Bathurst 1742 - London (Londres), Printed for Charles Bathurst, 1742. In 8 de [14]-351pp.-1 f. Jonathan Swift (1667-1745), natif de Dublin, publia de nombreux pamphlets et essais: ''A critical Essay upon the faculties of the mind'' (1707-1711), ''On the conduct of the allies'' (1713), ''Bon mots de Stella'' (1726), ''A Modest Proposal'' (1729), ''Directions to servants'' (1731), de nombreux poèmes parmi lesquels: ''Cadenus and Vanessa'' (1713), ''The progress of Beauty'' ''The progress of Poetry'' (1719-1720), ''The furniture of a Woman's mind'' (1727), ''A pastoral dialogues'' (1729), ''The day of Judgement'' (1731), il écrivit également des sermons et des prières: ''Three Sermons: I. On mutual subjection II. On conscience III. On the trinity'' (1744). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

- Meyer, Bibliogr. Handbuch Zinzendorf-Forschung A 159. - VD18 10358994. - Sabin 106359. - Alden/Landis, European Americana 742.221. - BBKL XIV, 509ff. - Realencyklopädie³ XXI, 679ff.

The Natural Method of cureing the Diseases of the Body, and the Disorders of the Mind depending on the Body

sp;- London - George Strahan, 1742 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A fascinating eighteenth-century medical work by George Cheyne. George Cheyne (16711743) was a pioneering physician, early proto-psychologist, philosopher and mathematician, born in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, who opened a medical practice in Bath in 1702. He is best known for his contribution to vegetarianism. In 1740, he penned his last work, a study of nutrition and natural living, The Natural Method of Cureing the Diseases of the Body, and the Disorders of the Mind. His work is often quoted by vegetarians and animal rights activists, particularly the following passage: &#39;To see the convulsions, agonies and tortures of a poor fellow-creature, whom they cannot restore nor recompense, dying to gratify luxury and tickle callous and rank organs, must require a rocky heart, and a great degree of cruelty and ferocity. I cannot find any great difference between feeding on human flesh and feeding on animal flesh, except custom and practice. &#39;Bookbinder&#39;s label of F. W. Hawkins and Son to front pastedown. Condition: Rebound in a cloth binding. Externally, generally smart, though with some marks and light bumping. Internally, firmly bound. Institutional ink stamp of BirminghamMedical Instituteto the title page. Pages are bright, though with some slight marginal age-toning and some handling marks. Overall: VERY GOOD..

NICE COPY. PICTURES AND MORE DETAILS ON REQUEST.

The Charter Granted by Their Majesties King William and Queen Mary

1742. [Massachusetts]. The Charter Granted by Their Majesties King William and Queen Mary, to the Inhabitants of the Province of the Massachusetts-Bay in New-England. [And] Acts And Laws Of His Majesty&#39;s Province Of The Massachusetts-Bay In New England. [Bound with] [Nine Separately Issued Session Laws]. Boston: Printed and Sold by Samuel Kneeland and Timothy Green, 1742 (i.e. 1743). [ii], 14, 28, 337, [1], 339-374 pp. Folio (11" x 7-1/2"). Contemporary sheep, raised bands to spine. Moderate rubbing to extremities. Light toning to text, minor loss to leaf of table due to chip in margin, page numbers, which are penciled in, a few blank leaves at end of text block excised. Front free endpaper inscribed by Jeremiah Powell to Samuel Foxcroft, Powell&#39;s ownership inscription to title page of Charter. A very good copy in a well-preserved unrestored binding. * A desirable copy of this mid-eighteenth century compilation of Massachusetts colonial statutes, relating in part to the winding down of the controversial land-bank and paper money schemes of 1739 and 1740 that were quashed by act of Parliament in 1740. This is also an interesting association copy. Jeremiah Powell [1714-1789] acquired this copy upon publication in 1743, at age 29, for 6 pounds, according to his still intelligible if obscured inscription on the title page. The front free endpaper bears his full name again and several signature trails, as well as his later presentation inscription to Samuel Foxcroft [1734-1805], a 1754 graduate of Harvard and minister of New Gloucester, Maine. Powell, Maine landowner, businessman, justice of the peace and member of the General Assembly, rose to prominence during the Revolution as de facto Governor of Massachusetts due to his role as President of the Massachusetts Council, which replaced the executive branch during the war. Powell served six consecutive terms, from November 1776 to June 1780, thereafter alternating with James Bowdoin, Artemas Ward, and William Sever. Some indication of his importance can be gained from his frequent correspondence with George Washington. There are nine session laws published subsequent to the main volume bound in at the rear; unused blank sheets at the end of the volume were at some time excised. Of the nine

The Virgin Unmask&#39;d: Or, Female Dialogues, betwixt an Elderly Maiden Lady, and her Niece, On Several Diverting Discourses on Love, Marriage, Memoirs, Morals, &c. of the Times. The Fourth Edition

London: Printed for T. Cooper..., 1742. 8vo, 165 x 97 mms., pp. x, [8], [17] - 232, 235 - 239 [240 blank], contemporary calf, neatly rebacked and binding restored, new morocco label; title-page soiled, text fingered, pages toned, lightly browned to margins, several leaves nicked/ chipped to fore-edges, into text at pp. 35, some scattered smudging and marking, ink spotting to a few margins, corners turned/ creased at points, a few upper leaves dampstained to lower margin. Admonishing her niece for revealing so much of her cleavage in his upper garment, the "Maiden Lady" seems to anticipate the burka: "Women, in strictness, should never appear in Public but veil&#39;d; at least Young Women should never shew their Faces to any Men, but their nearest Relations." As ODNB notes, the work begins in almost pornographic fashion, but "quickly disappeared as the discussion turned to the undesirability of marriage and the harmful effects of child bearing on women, two proto-novels, and a discussion of the dangers posed by Louis XIV to Europe&#39;s peace and security." Mandeville 1630 - 1733) published this in 1709. ESTC T57159 locates copies in BL, Bodleian, TCD, Leeds Brotherton; Duke, McGill, UCLA.

The Hague & Dresden. 1742.. [14],118,[2]pp. plus engraved frontispiece and two plates of engraved music. Antique style three-quarter calf and marbled boards, a near fine copy. First edition of one of the earliest apologies for the Order of Freemasons, containing two American Masonic songs by Benjamin Franklin. This is one of the key 18th- century texts delineating the exclusivity of the Masonic Order to Christians: "The Order admits only Christians. Out of the Christian Church one can not and should not be received as a Freemason. That is why the Jews, Mohammedans, and Pagans are excluded as infidels" (translated from the French). The two songs by Franklin are also of considerable note. The likely author of the main text is Johann Lorenz Natter (1705-1763), the German goldsmith, gem-cutter, and lapidary who was accepted to the Florence Masonic Lodge as a disciple of the antiquarian Baron Philipp von Stosch, the founder of the lodge, in 1733. Natter was the most celebrated and talented engraver of his time, and so much so that his talent was even eulogized by Goethe. Natter&#39;s book about gem-engraving was published in London in 1754, in both English and French. Natter&#39;s contribution in spreading Masonic knowledge is well-known and important: "...on his travels [he] left copies of the various manuscripts at the court of William IV in The Hague, in London, Copenhagen and Stockholm. In St. Petersburg Natter joined some Roiscrucians, and the documents he had brought became their basic study material. Later, in 1763 this same knowledge was imparted to Johann August Starck, when he went to St. Petersburg as a teacher of Oriental languages. He contacted the Freemasons there, who had incorporated much of Natter&#39;s legacy. Starck, in turn, shared his special &#39;secret knowledge,&#39; once he had returned to Germany, with the existing Masonic Order of the Strict Observance with which he associated himself. Since this Order had many affiliations, not least in France, the Florentine scriptures thus provided some of the most seminal sources in the hermetic-rosicrucian tradition of that day" (Ida Potsma, THE BIRTH OF A NEW ORDER; 1980). Benjamin Franklin joined the newly-opened Philadelphia Masonic Lodge in 1731 and was a lifelong member and supporter of the Order. August Wolfstieg attributes the two pieces to Jacques Christophe Naudot (ca. 1690-1762), a French composer and member of the Masonic lodge Satine- Genevieve and Coustos Villeroy in Paris. The Italian musicologist Alberto Basso, however, attributes them to Franklin, which certainly makes more sense since the composer is identified as "le frère Amèricain" in the title. He stresses the primary import of the songs in the work, writing: "In this case it is not important for us to find out who the author of the book could be, but to emphasize that the two songs...are the work of Benjamin Franklin, who worked on the Masonic scene a dozen years now" (L&#39;invenzione della gioia. Musica e massoneria nell&#39;eta dei Lumi; 1994). A rare and amost unknown piece of Franklin&#39;s work.

Amsterdam: Covens & Mortier, 1742. unbound. Map. Uncolored engraving. Image measures 21 7/8" x 29 3/8". This stunning double page map of Paris shows streets, buildings, parks, waterways, gardens and fields in incredible detail. Delicately variegated line quality and topographical illustration make this an extraordinarily beautiful piece, exemplifying Paris&#39; charm before Hausmann&#39;s resdesign in the 19th century. A key at the lower left lists notable buildings. Title is both in French and Dutch. Minor staining and a repair along original folds with reinforcement on back. Guillaume Delisle (1675-1726) was a legendary French cartographer known for introducing a new standard of accuracy into 17th-century mapmaking. He used astronomical observations to determine locations and draw more precise coastlines. The Amsterdam publishing firm of Covens and Mortier (1665-c. 1862) was established by Cornelius Mortier and Jean Covens. Together, the two republished the works of great 17th and early 18th century Dutch and French cartographers such as De L&#39;Isle, Allard, Jansson, De Wit, and Ottens. The firm quickly grew into one of the largest and most prolific Dutch publishing outfits of the 18th century and enjoyed a long and prolific life under a variety of names.

Franciscisci Blanchini Veronensis Utriusque Signaturæ Referendarii, & Prælati Domestici, de Tribus Generius Instrumentorum Musicæ Veterum Organicæ Dissertatio

Romæ, Impensis Fausti Amidei Bibliopolæ in via Cursus. Ex Typgraphia Bernabò, & Lazzarini, 1742. FIRST EDITION. Large 4to, xi [xii blank], 58, 8 full-page engraved plates of musical instruments, 5 engraved vignettes, contemporary vellum, with the armorial book plate of E. de Blavette on the front paste-down end-paper; fore-margins of first few leaves slightly frayed, slight wear to binding, but generally a very good copy. Francesco Bianchini [1662-1729] was librarian to Cardinal Ottoboni, later Pope Alexander VIII, in Rome. He seems to have been a much respected antiquary who enjoyed considerable Papal patronage. Bianchini&#39;s name is often spelled Blanchini, but it seems to be one and the same person. Graesse in his &#39;Supplement&#39; of 1869 lists the work under Bianchini gives these as alternative spellings for the same person. [With thanks to John Wilbraham for this information.] This seems to be a work that Bianchini compiled as librarian, and it was not published in its lifetime. At the Wolffheim sale in 1928 - 1929, a copy sold for £100. Eitner II, 32. Wolffheim, I, 1126. Legacy of Sebastian Virdung (Grolier Club, 2005), no. 38.
