1 vol. 12mo with 1 frontispiece, 1 folding map. Contemporary calf. First edition of this history of the Persian King Thamas Kouli-Kan or Nader Chah, published anonymously. Nadir Chah (1688-1747) was a member of the Afshar tribe and is generally considered as one of the greatest of all rulers of Persia. Engraved frontispiece of Thamas Kouli-Kan by Mathey and engraved folding map of Persia and the states of the Mogol. Fine copy. OCLC Diba Collection ; Chadenat ; Attabey.

The Natural Method of cureing the Diseases of the Body, and the Disorders of the Mind depending on the Body.

sp;- London - George Strahan 1742 - A fascinating eighteenth-century medical work by George Cheyne. George Cheyne (16711743) was a pioneering physician, early proto-psychologist, philosopher and mathematician, born in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, who opened a medical practice in Bath in 1702. He is best known for his contribution to vegetarianism. In 1740, he penned his last work, a study of nutrition and natural living, The Natural Method of Cureing the Diseases of the Body, and the Disorders of the Mind. His work is often quoted by vegetarians and animal rights activists, particularly the following passage: 'To see the convulsions, agonies and tortures of a poor fellow-creature, whom they cannot restore nor recompense, dying to gratify luxury and tickle callous and rank organs, must require a rocky heart, and a great degree of cruelty and ferocity. I cannot find any great difference between feeding on human flesh and feeding on animal flesh, except custom and practice. 'Bookbinder's label of F. W. Hawkins and Son to front pastedown. Condition: Rebound in a cloth binding. Externally, generally smart, though with some marks and light bumping. Internally, firmly bound. Institutional ink stamp of BirminghamMedical Instituteto the title page. Pages are bright, though with some slight marginal age-toning and some handling marks. Overall: VERY GOOD. A Treatise of Fluxions. In two books. Volume I [-II].

Edinburgh: Printed by T.W. and T. Ruddimans 1742 - FIRST EDITION, 2 vols. in 1, with the half-title to vol. I (not called for for vol. II), and with 51 folding engraved plates, pp. [vi], vi, 412; [ii, title to vol. II], 413-763, [1], 4to, old calf, gilt roll tooled borders on sides, skillfully rebacked, spine gilt, red lettering piece, red edges, very good ‘In 1742 Maclaurin published his 2 volume Treatise of Fluxions, the first systematic exposition of Newton's methods written as a reply to Berkeley's attack on the calculus for its lack of rigorous foundations. Maclaurin wrote in the introduction "[Berkeley] represented the method of fluxions as founded on false reasoning, and full of mysteries. His objections seemed to have been occasioned by the concise manner in which the elements of this method have been usually described, and their having been so much misunderstood by a person of his abilities appeared to me to be sufficient proof that a fuller account of the grounds of this was required."‘The Treatise of Fluxions is a [beautifully printed] major work of 763 pages, much praised by those who read it but usually described as having little influence. However, [Grabiner] argues convincingly that Maclaurin's influence on the Continentals has been underrated. Grabiner gives five areas of influence of Maclaurin's treatise: his treatment of the fundamental theorem of the calculus; his work on maxima and minima; the attraction of ellipsoids; elliptic integrals; and the Euler-Maclaurin summation formula.‘Maclaurin appealed to the geometrical methods of the ancient Greeks and to Archimedes' method of exhaustion in attempting to put Newton's calculus on a rigorous footing. It is in the Treatise of fluxions that Maclaurin uses the special case of Taylor's series now named after him and for which he is undoubtedly best remembered today. The Maclaurin series was not an idea discovered independently of the more general result of Taylor for Maclaurin acknowledges Taylor's contribution. Another important result given by Maclaurin, which has not been named after him or any other mathematician, is the important integral test for the convergence of an infinite series. The Treatise of fluxions is not simply a work designed to put the calculus on a rigorous basis, for Maclaurin gave many applications of calculus in the work. For example he investigates the mutual attraction of two ellipsoids of revolution as an application of the methods he gives’ (MacTutor, on-line).See J.V. Grabiner, Was Newton's calculus a dead end? The continental influence of Maclaurin's treatise of fluxions, Amer. Math. Monthly 104 (5) (1997), 393-410.

AN IMPORTANT FIRST EDITION OF THIS HIGHLY REGARDED AND EARLY ENGLISH TRANSLATION. BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED WITH FINE FULL-PAGE ENGRAVINGS THROUGHOUT. An appealing set of Cervantes' magnificent and romantic tale. Jarvis' is one of the best-known and earliest translations into English. Its presentation, from the point of view of the quality of the art of the book is splendid. Very finely executed full page engravings, engraved head and tail pieces, and engraved capitals make for a creation of the highest order. There is a fine ‘Life of Cervantes’ preceding the text translated from the original Spanish and with an especially handsome engraving of Cervantes. In addition, significant content was gained from researching the old histories and chronicles with which the Spaniards of the 16th century were familiar. Thus, many of the period poetical nuances have here been included in English for the first time. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

LIFE AND EXPLOITS of the Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote

1742 - CERVANTES DE SAAVEDRA, Miguel. THE LIFE AND EXPLOITS OF THEM INGENIOUS GENTLEMAN DON QUIXOTE DE LA MANCHA. Translated from the Original Spanish by Charles Jarvis, Esq; London, J. & R. Tonson and R. Dodsley, 1742. Two quarto volumes. (i)-(xxiv)(8)(xxv)-xxxii,(i)-(viii)90,(14)355 pp.; i- xii,388 pp. Second issue, with "Supplement to the Translator's Preface," on the origin of books of chivalry, by Wiliam Warburton, inserted after I.xxiv. Illustrated with a portrait of Cervantes and 68 copperplate illustrations, drawn by John Vanderbank and engraved by Gerard Vander Gucht, from a Spanish-language Tonson edition of 1738 (Lord Carteret's edition - the first deluxe edition ever printed, and the first edition in Spanish published in England) with new page labels. Vanderbank, a popular portraitist, 37 of whose works are in the National Portrait Gallery, studied with Godfrey Kneller. The choice of a portraitist becomes clear in the "Advertisement concerning the Prints," where John Oldfield explains the restrained aesthetic, hinging on facial expression rather than action, which went into their planning. The portrait of Cervantes by G. Kent, engraved by George Vertue, is opposite the first page of the 90-page "Life of Michael de Cervantes Saavedra" (dated 1738) in Volume I. Ten engraved headpieces and initials. Text and illustrations are clean but for some occasional light foxing or soiling. Recently bound to period in quarter calf, with gilt rules and red and green labels on spine, and marbled paper boards. This is a handsome copy of a lavishly illustrated edition of the Spanish classic. $3750.00

First and only edition, and a primary account of the English incursion into Florida against the Spanish at St. Augustine. The unsuccessful siege was led by General James Oglethorpe, one of the founders of Georgia. "During the War of Jenkin’s Ear, 1739-43, an expedition under General Oglethorpe seized two Spanish forts on the St. John's River early in 1740, and made an unsuccessful attempt to capture St. Augustine. In 1742 Oglethorpe turned back an invasion into Georgia of a large force of Spaniards, and the next year made another unsuccessful invasion of Florida. The failure of the 1740 expedition caused much ill feeling in South Carolina against Oglethorpe, and this anonymous ACCOUNT, erroneously ascribed...to Oglethrope, is in fact a bitter criticism of him for mishandling the forces from South Carolina" - Streeter. The author, in fact, has been identified as James Killpatrick, a Charleston doctor and an officer who served under Oglethorpe. Killpatrick quotes letters from Oglethorpe to the Carolina authorities in 1739 and 1740 asking for assistance in the expedition and gives a highly detailed account of the course of events from the arrival of the joint forces at the mouth of St. John's River (May 9, 1741) to the raising of the siege on July 5. The two maps (which Streeter calls "detailed and excellent") are a plan of the town, castle, and harbor of St. Augustine with the disposition of Oglethorpe's forces in 1740, and another showing the Florida coast from the mouth of the St. John's to Matanzas Inlet. Servies notes that some copies have a plate showing the town and castle of St. Augustine by Thomas Silver, which originally appeared in the GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE for July, 1740. It seems that the view was not originally issued with this title but was inserted into some copies as they were published roughly contemporaneously. The Streeter and Siebert copies, for example, had no view, and Howes does not call for one. The Streeter copy realized $2200 (now at Yale) while the Siebert copy sold for $18,400 to a private collector. The publication of this text sparked a pamphlet war, directly answered by George Cadogan in 1743 in his THE SPANISH HIRELING DETECTED. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 42/104. HOWES O44, "c." ESTC T60032.

The History Of the Adventures Of Joseph Andrews

      A. Millar, London 1742 - FIRST EDITION of Fielding's first novel, in handsome contemporary calf. "Fielding's Joseph Andrews was published anonymously in 1742. Described on the title page as 'Written in Imitation of the Manner of Cervantes, author of Don Quixote,' it begins as a burlesque of [Richardson's] Pamela, with Joseph, Pamela's virtuous footman brother, resisting the attempts of a highborn lady to seduce him. The parodic intention soon becomes secondary, and the novel develops into a masterpiece of sustained irony and social criticism, with, at its centre, Parson Adams, one of the great comic figures of literature and a striking confirmation of the contention of the 19th-century Russian novelist Fyodor Dostoyevsky that the positively good man can be made convincing in fiction only if rendered to some extent ridiculous. Fielding explains in his preface that he is writing 'a comic Epic-Poem in Prose.' He was certainly inaugurating a new genre in fiction" (Britannica). London: A. Millar, 1742. 12mo, contemporary full calf rebacked with original spines laid down. Two volumes. With four pages of ads at end of vol. 1; vol. 2 with one ad leaf opposite title and two pages of ads at rear. Early bookplate. Without spine label on vol. 1. Discoloration to margin of a few leaves in vol. 1; vol 2 clean. A very handsome set. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Leipzig: Breitkopf, 1742

      - First and only edition of a collection of papers about whether animals can be said to possess the power of 'reason', edited and introduced by the Leipzig scientist and friend of J.S. Bach, Johann Heinrich Winckler (1703-70). The contributors are Johann Gottlob Werner, Martin Gottlieb Pauli, Ernst Salomon Hausdorf, Christoph Jeremias Rost, Benjamin Groddeck, Christlieb Traugott Bierling, Christhold Mylius (Lessing's cousin), Carl Gottlob von Penzig, Johann Christian Körner, Ernst Christian Wagner and Friedrich Heinrich Wagner. Their consensus, against the Cartesians, is that certain animals must be called reasonable creatures because (a) they can connect one judgement with another, (b) they sometimes plan for the future, (c) they use a sort of language, and (d) they seem to exhibit some kind of moral sensibility. [Theatre de la Milice etrangere: Schaubühne verschiedener in Teutschland bisher unbekannt gewester Soldaten von ausländischen Nationen].

Augsburg, [ca. 1742].. Folio (235 x 380 mm). 28 engraved plates (3 unnumbered and 25 numbered consecutively), in magnificent contemporary colour throughout, raised in gilt. Contemporary brown calf; spine rebacked with giltstamped red label; leading edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. All edges red.. Exceedingly rare, brilliantly hand-coloured set of costume engravings by the Augsburg master Martin Engelbrecht, depicting the protagonists of the War of the Austrian Succession then raging in Silesia. Some 150 plates we published in this series which cashed in on the timely subject and, specifically, the warriors' exotic appeal. They usually appear separately and were frequently cut out (one of the most popular applications of Engelbrecht's output); OCLC lists a single copy bound as a book with the title. - The combattants who aroused the greatest sensation were the fierce soldiers from the Habsburg monarchy's military border, first and foremost the Slavonian Pandours, notorious for their savagery. Ten engravings are dedicated to these vicious braves, including a portrait of their famous commander, Baron Francis Trenck, while nine more show Hungarian foot soldiers ("Tolpatches"), some on horseback. There is an unspecified Croat as well as a Dalmatian "Morlach"; a portrait of commander Johann Daniel von Menzel, like Trenck a master of the guerilla style; another of the towering Irishman James Kirkland, one of the "Potsdam Giants"; as well as a Prussian Hussar and a Lancer. The first two plates show the rulers Maria Theresia of Austria and Prussian King Frederick II who fought for sovereignty over Silesia. Each plate is accompanied by caption, usually a four-line rhyme pointing out the characteristics of the man depicted. Vividly coloured throughout in a contemporary hand with touches of gold heightening. Some slight thumbstaining, but very well preserved altogether in its first binding, its spine professionally restored. - OCLC 731447059 (Zurich).

Opera Omnia, tam antea sparsim edita, quam hactenus inedita

Engraved frontis. port. of the author, another of Frederick III of Prussia, engraved vignettes on titles, & 91 engraved plates. Titles printed in red & black. Four vols. Large 4to, a handsome prize binding of mid-19th cent. blind-stamped black morocco, finely stamped arms in gilt of the "Académie de Paris, Prix du Concours Général," spines gilt, dentelles gilt, a.e.g. Lausanne & Geneva: M.M. Bousquet, 1742. First collected edition; a fine and handsome set in an attractive prize binding with an appealing provenance (see below). After Newton's death in 1727, Bernoulli was unchallenged as the leading mathematical preceptor to all Europe. Most of Bernoulli's writings appeared in various journals and remained uncollected until the present edition. "His chief discoveries are the exponential calculus, the treatment of trigonometry as a branch of analysis, the conditions for a geodesic, the determination of orthogonal trajectories, the solution of the brachistochrone, the statement that a ray of light traversed such a path that Smds [in Greek] is a minimum, and the enunciation of the principle of virtual work...The general adoption on the continent of the differential rather than the fluxional notation was largely due to his influence."-Ball, A Short Account of the History of Mathematics, p. 368. The recipient of this prize book was Adolphe Carnot (1839-1920), son of Hippolyte Carnot. Adolphe entered the École Polytechnique in 1858 and, upon completion, joined the École des Mines where he was a professor for more than thirty years. The book label in the first volume states that this set was awarded to Carnot for "Mathématiques Spéciales, Physique, 2e Prix." ❧ Roberts & Trent, Bibliotheca Mechanica, pp. 36-37-"the first edition of Jean Bernoulli's collected works brings together 189 of his papers and 59 of his lectures. The first volume is primarily devoted to problems in geometry and the early calculus, but also contains papers on muscular mechanics, the resistance of solids, and a geometrical demonstration of the motion of pendulums and projectiles in resisting and unresisting media. Volumes two and three are almost totally devoted to problems of mechanics, the first of these containing his theoretical essay on the maneuvering of vessels and related papers, as well as numerous contributions on the analysis of trajectories. His discourse on the laws governing the communication of movement opens volume three, which also contains his essay on celestial mechanics. The last volume contains contributions on the curvature of elastic plates, his mecanico-dynamical propositions, and problems in dynamics. Most important, its appearance in this volume represents the first printing of the Hydraulica, which was written in competition with his son, Daniel." .
