Maankaart - Homann, Doppelmayr, Hevelius, 1742/48.

        Journey to The World Underground.

London: T. Astley; Salisbury: Collins. 1742. First English Edition. 12mo. 324pp. Bound in recent full dark brown speckled calf with burgundy title labels and gilt decoration to spine and boards (Dragonfly binders label to rear pastedown). Handsome. Marbled endpapers. Lacking half title, ink splash to title page and small section of fore-edge otherwise internally clean; florid and rather elegant ownership to rear blank "John Brownjohn, The 26th of October, 1769". A clean, tidy copy. Very good indeed.A bizarre and important title detailing Niels Klim's journey into the underworld and his adventures therein, a satirical fantasy very much in the vein of Gulliver's Travels, albeit a trifle more gothic and lush...the picture of the Potuan denizen alone is worth the price of admission. It is notable from several points but is most widely considered to be one of the earliest science fiction novels, and likely the first to encompass the hollow earth concept as a trope. Hollow earth, lost races, picaresque adventures and a healthy dollop of complete early specualtive lunacy. Awesome.

Opera omnia, tam antea sparsim edita.

First edition Lausanne & Geneva: Marci-Michaelis Bousquet, 1742. An exceptionally fine and complete copy with both the portraits which often lack, from the collection of Robert Honeyman. "Bernoulli published only one book, Théorie de la manoeuvre des vaisseaux (1714) and apart from this, his dissertation De motu musculorum (1694) and one or two minor pieces, all his work was contributed to journals (189 papers are collected here) or were first published in these volumes, i.e. 59 of his lectures and the Hydraulica in volume IV [appearing here for the first time in print], which was written in competition with his son Daniel." (Roger Gaskell). ?Honeyman 293 (this copy, sold for $1,500 in 1978); Norman 217; Stanitz 55; Arnoud de Vitry 55. "The first volume is primarily devoted to problems in geometry and the early calculus, but also contains papers on muscular mechanics, the resistance of solids, and a geometrical demonstration of the motion of pendulums and projectiles in resisting and unresisting media. Volumes two and three are almost totally devoted to problems of mechanics, the first of these containing his theoretical essay on the maneuvering of vessels and related papers, as well as numerous contributions on the analysis of trajectories. His discourse on the laws governing the communication of movement opens volume three, which also contains his essay on celestial mechanics. The last volume contains contributions on the curvature of elastic plates, his mechanico-dynamical propositions, and problems in dynamics. Most important, its appearance in this volume represents the first printing of the Hydraulica, which was written in competition with his son, Daniel. "Johann Bernoulli 'proposed the problem of the brachystochrone (the Bernoullis' term - the curve of quickest descent joining two points), to which Galileo had given an incorrect solution: he solved it himself (the answer is the cycloid) in 1697. It is due to his work on this problem and that of finding the curve of given perimeter which will enclose the greatest area that he is considered one of the founders of the calculus of variations. He is also remembered for his work on the exponential calculus; on geodesics; on complex numbers; and his treatment of trigonometry as a branch of the calculus.' (DSB). He also first enunciated the principle of virtual work and was the first to denote the accelerating effect of gravity by the sign g, thus arriving at the formula v square equals 2gh. Todhunter and Pearson note Bernoulli's treatment of the cause of elasticity in his Discours sur les loix de la communication du movement (1727) and his theory of 'captive aether.' Timoshenko remarks on his formulation of the principle of virtual displacements in a letter to Varignon." (Bibliotheca Mechanica). 4 volumes 4to (247 x 196 mm) . Fully complete: vol. I: pp. [4] [i] ii-xxiv, [1-2] 3-563 [1:blank], title in red and black, 25 engraved plates, including a portrait of Frederick III of Prussia engraved by G.F. Schmidt, a portrait of Bernoulli by Schmidt after J. Ruber, and 23 folding engraved plates numbered i-xxiii; vol. II: pp. [2], [1-3] 4-620, 17 folding engraved plates numbered xxiv-xl; vol. III: pp. [2], [1-3] 4-563 [1:blank], 36 folding engraved plates numbered xli-lxxvi; vol. IV: [1-5] 6-588, 15 folding engraved plates numbered lxxvii-xci. Provenance: with gilt red morocco ex-libris of Robert Honeyman to front paste down of each volume. A very fine and completley unrestored set, housed in four fine custom half red morocco cases.

Fine Jervas (a printer's error resulted in "Jarvis") was an artist and art collector, but he also had literary ambitions, and with Alexander Pope (whose painting instructor he had been for some six months in 1713) he edited a version of Charles-Alphonse Du Fresnoy's De arte grafica. But his major literary undertaking was this English translation of Don Quixote to which also provided the first introduction and a critical analysis of previous translations. Published posthumously in 1742 and frequently reprinted, "it is generally acknowledged as being close in spirit to the original." Vol. II: [2], 413-763 [1] pp. and 16 folding engraved plates. Contemporary calf, red morocco labels to spines (binding a little rubbed and bumped, vol. 1 foot of spine damaged, hinges cracked but firm). Internally only very little browned, text of vol. II with faint dampstaining, contemporary ink inscription to vol. I title and p.50, library and withdrawal stamps "Bibliotheca Coll. Nov. Edinensis" to foot of titles. Provenance: John Sprat Rainier (1777-1822), Rear Admiral of the Royal Navy. ----Norman 1408; DSB VIII, p.610; Honeyman 2084. - FIRST EDITION. Written as a staunch defence of Newton, and described as "the earliest logical and systematic publication of the Newtonian methods", this work was written in reply to Bishop George Berkeley's The Analyst. A letter addressed to an infidel mathematician of 1734. This latter work, which derided Newton's conception of "prime and ultimate ratios", was addressed to Halley who had steered the first edition of the Principia through the press. In his preface to the Treatise, MacLaurin lays out his reasons for defending Newton and his methods. This work is otherwise noteworthy for the solution of a great number of problems in geometry, statics and the theory of attractions, and elaborations of many of the principles described by Newton in the Principia. It stood as a model of rigor until the appearance of Cauchy's Cours d'Analyse in 1821 (DSB). Very Good.

Observations on the Florid Song; or, Sentiments on the Ancient and Modern Singers [Translated into English by Mr Galliard]

J Wilcox, London 1742 - 12mo., 10 x 16.5cm, [xx], 6 folding plates of music, 184pp. Leather binding with red leather title to spine. The boards are rubbed through at the fore edge corners and there are general scuffs and light scratches on both boards, more so the lower. The leather along both external joints is cracked through but the inner hinges are not cracked and both boards are fairly firmly attached. Internally, it is generally very good indeed. There is a stain tide mark across several pages towards the back (p169-p181) and sporadic small spots and marks. There is an old 3cm repaired closed tear at the top corner of piii/iv. The front pastedown bears the 18C bookplate of George Wm Gent (presumably of Moyns Park, Steeple Bumpstead, Essex). At the top corner of the ffep. there is a very neat remark written in ink saying ' An admired work / very scarce / JB'. Tosi's treatise Opinioni de' cantori antichi e moderni was first published in 1723. "The Opinioni remains a valuable source of information about Baroque performing practice, particularly the interpretation of appoggiaturas, trills and other vocal ornaments and the use of tempo rubato."
