Essai Philosophique Concernant L’Entendement Humain,. [Essay Concerning .]

Chez Pierre Mortier, Amsterdam 1742 - Pp. xlii, 603, [19]. Engraved frontis portrait of Locke by E. Morellon la Cave after G. Kneller Eques. Title in red and black with engraved printer’s device, engraved headpiece, woodcut ornaments and initials. Contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt in compartments to a thistle motif between raised bands, marbled endpapers, red stained edges. Binding worn at extremities, corners exposed, upper and lower portions of front joint split (but cover holding firmly), new label. Outer margin of frontis portrait repaired, not affecting image, several scratched out signatures in margins of title, contents leaf bound-in slightly askew, with outer edges a little frayed, but otherwise a good clean copy, in a still-serviceable binding. The Fourth Edition of Coste’s celebrated French translation of Locke’s Essay Concerning Humane Understanding. Pierre Coste [1668-1747], a French Protestant cleric who took refuge in Holland around 1690, brought out a French translation of Locke’s Thoughts Concerning Education in 1695. The work sufficiently impressed the author that while Coste was visiting England in 1697 Locke invited him to translate his Essay. The translation of the Essay was done under Locke’s close supervision and was published in June 1700, with a commendatory note by the author. When Locke died in 1704, Coste wrote a eulogy of him which was published in Bayle’s République des Lettres in 1705 and later reprinted in the second edition of his translation of the Essay (1729), and is included in the present edition. Besides the works of Locke, Coste was also responsible for translating the writings of Lord Shaftesbury and Isaac Newton (Optics). He also produced a highly acclaimed edition of Montaigne’s Essays (1724), as well as some original literary works, including a life of Condé; but he is best remembered for his translations, which were instrumental in introducing English thought to the French philosophers of the eighteenth century. Contemporary author notation on titlepage. Lightly soiled. Several edge tears throughout text. About very good. Jonathan Dickinson (1688-1747) was one of the foremost leaders in the New England Presbyterian Church and the first president of the College of New Jersey (later renamed Princeton University). Throughout his career he actively championed freedom for dissenters and strove to find middle ground between the extremes of the church. This work was one of his most effective, defending revival while maintaining the need for order, stability, and holiness provided by the church. An attestation prefixed to the text is signed in type by Boston ministers Benjamin Colman, Joseph Sewall, Thomas Prince, John Webb, William Cooper, Thomas Foxcroft, and Joshua Gee. Scarce on the market and especially nice in this original condition. EVANS 4931.

Maankaart - Homann, Doppelmayr, Hevelius, 1742/48.

        Journey to The World Underground.

London: T. Astley; Salisbury: Collins. 1742. First English Edition. 12mo. 324pp. Bound in recent full dark brown speckled calf with burgundy title labels and gilt decoration to spine and boards (Dragonfly binders label to rear pastedown). Handsome. Marbled endpapers. Lacking half title, ink splash to title page and small section of fore-edge otherwise internally clean; florid and rather elegant ownership to rear blank "John Brownjohn, The 26th of October, 1769". A clean, tidy copy. Very good indeed.A bizarre and important title detailing Niels Klim's journey into the underworld and his adventures therein, a satirical fantasy very much in the vein of Gulliver's Travels, albeit a trifle more gothic and lush...the picture of the Potuan denizen alone is worth the price of admission. It is notable from several points but is most widely considered to be one of the earliest science fiction novels, and likely the first to encompass the hollow earth concept as a trope. Hollow earth, lost races, picaresque adventures and a healthy dollop of complete early specualtive lunacy. Awesome.

Les etrennes de la St Jean

Second edition of mention. Bibliographers Announce original edition of 1742, on the same date, but some researchers have shown that in the edition of shellers of 1739, it is stated: "the gracious and helpful way the audience agreed to receive my little New Year's gift of S. John. " Unless this edition of shellers was backdated, the first edition of Etrennes would be earlier.Copy hit the arms of Louise Adelaide de Bourbon Conti, Princess of France1742 Pet. in-12 (8x14,3cm) (10) 264pp. relié
