Holmiae. 1742, Plate mark 49,5 x 58 cm. The whole sheet 52,5 x 64 cm. Contemporary hand colouring. In passe partout. Green passe partout. A few minor spots and creases. Strong vibrant colours. Very nice condition.. A fine map of the gulf of Finland with southern Finland, Ingermanland, Estonia, parts of Latvia and Russia with the newly established St. Petersburg. In the lower part of the map city plans of Kexholm, Wiborg, Narva, Wilmanstrand, Fredrichshamn, Revel, Cronstadt and Petersborg (St. Petersburg). The map is a part of a work by Kongl. Landtmäteri Contoiret and its associates published in the years 1739-1793, covering parts of Sweden, Finland and the Baltic States. This was the first effort to map the country in somewhat uniform maps. The first map to be published in 1739, was the grand "Charta öfwer Mälaren" by Jacob Nordencreutz. The maps Upland, Västmanland, Södermanland, Nerike, Skåne and a general map of Sweden followed in the 1740s and early 1750s. Few copies of these early maps were sold and the endevour came to a halt due to economic difficulties. After some years, the next map to be published was the 1769 map of Medelpad. The remaining maps were then published during the next twentyfive years. The last map "Charta öfver Heinola Höfdingedöme" was issued in 1793. Many parts of Sweden were never covered (Öland, Gotland, Halland, Herjedalen and Norrbotten). Since the project was unfinished, it was never sold as a proper atlas. No title published. The few atlases that do exist are private compilations. The general map of 1747 by Biurman is a milestone in swedish carthography. It replaces Bureus1626 map as a blue print of Sweden for foreign carthographers. (In the mid 1790s Samuel Gustaf Hermelin launched a private attempt to map the country, this time with success. All of Sweden and Finland was mapped by 1818.)

A Map of the British Empire in America with the French, Spanish and the Dutch Settlements adjacent thereto

Amsterdam: printed for John Covens and Cornelius Mortier, [n.d. c. 1742]. Copper-engraved map on four sheets, key map, sheet of harbor maps all hand- coloured in outline; 4 engraved views of Quebec, New York, Niagara Falls. Seven sheets, each 26 x 21 1/2 inches. An important association copy of the Covens and Mortier edition of the famous Popple map, annotated by Peter Wraxall: a man intimately associated with the establishment and setting of boundaries in colonial America. Henry Popple produced this map under the auspices of the Lord Commissioners of Trade and Plantations to help settle disputes arising from the rival expansions of English, Spanish and French colonies. "France claimed not only Canada, but also territories drained by the Mississippi and its tributaries - in practical terms, an area of half a continent" (Goss The Mapping of North America p.122.) The thrust of British mapmaking after 1718 was to establish her presence cartographically on the French. Hence the title "The British Empire in America..."Nevertheless, in making the map, Popple used the best available geographical information: Colonel Barnwell's map of the southeast; De L'Isle's "Carte de la Louisiane"; Cadwallader Colden's map of the Iroquois nations, and seems to have come up with a map that did not please imperialistic British viewers as much as it did those who only wanted an accurate depiction. The result was and is a vast map of North America never before delineated in such detail, and a source of delight and intrigue. The map was eventually very successful and there were several editions. Babinksi notes that George Washington owned a copy of the Key map (Popple's abbreviated version) and Benjamin Franklin ordered two copies for the Pennsylvania Assembly in 1746 and another in 1752. The Popple and Mitchell (1755) maps were the most important maps of North America made in the 18th century and were widely known and referred to throughout the formation of the United States. This example is the second state of the edition published by Covens and Mortier in Amsterdam, circa 1742. Covens & Mortier was a highly respected Amsterdam map publishing firm, which, more than any of their colleagues, maintained the high standards established by the Dutch and French cartographers of the previous century. The seven page Popple map appeared in the Covens & Mortier edition of De l'Isle's Atlas Nouveau. The Covens and Mortier version of Popple offers in a rather more manageable and accessible form all the geographical and political material of the original, including the depiction of Wager's sea battle with the Spanish near Cartagena in 1707. The region in question, the Eastern half of North America and a portion of northern South America, is laid out on four sheets, which joined would be roughly 43 x 52 inches. Each sheet is titled with its content. In addition to this are three more sheets: the Key map, a sheet with four views: Mexico City, New York, Quebec and Niagara Falls, and a sheet with eighteen harbor and island plans from Annapolis Royal in Nova Scotia to Porto Bello in Panama. It is unusual to have the Key map, as it was frequently separated from the others and framed by itself. This copy is further individualized in that it is the Wraxall-Dunkin-Van Rensslaer copy. It originally belonged to and was annotated by Peter Wraxall (d. 11 July 1759). He was an Englishman, who settled in New York and became involved in the relations between the Colony and the Iroquois Confederacy, which was a critical element in Britain's rivalry with France, writing several reports on the history of relations between whites and Iroquois in New York. Wraxall was William Johnson's secretary and, in battle, aide-de- camp, for the first two years of the French and Indian War. The atlas from which this map was removed subsequently passed to Elizabeth Dunkin (d.1846, niece of Wraxall's wife Elizabeth), who gave it to her son-in-law John Sanders Van Rensslaer (1792-1868). Wraxall limits his annotations to the upper left sheet; he notes in the lower left corner of the margin that the so-called 'Lake Illinois' "in the Maps published by Jefferies 19th Feby. 1753 this Lake is named Mishigan & he runs the limits of the 6 Nations to the Branch of the Missisipi called in the above Map River Msingona". In addition he has added a sub-title (Native American name) to Lake Erie. Mark Babinski Henry Popple's 1733 map (New Jersey, 1998) (ref); Cumming, The Southeast in Early Maps 249; E. Thomas Birch (17051766), compiler of histories and biographer, was born on 23 November 1705. In 1732 Birch was appointed to the General Dictionary, Historical and Critical, an expanded version of the earlier English translation of Pierre Bayle's Dictionnaire historique et critique. Although he was one of three chief editors Birch undertook the vast majority of the new biographical entries in the ten-volume edition issued from 1734 to 1741. This work was not only a major achievement but also provided numerous contacts in the learned and scientific worlds from whom Birch gained help in his historical work. His election to the Royal Society on 20 February 1735 and to the Society of Antiquaries on 11 December 1735 owed much to these contacts. Separate historical works also grew out of the General Dictionary. First came The Works of Mr John Greaves (1737) followed by the complete collection of the works of John Milton (1738) and the massive seven-volume compilation of the state papers of John Thurloe (1742). DNB. Condition: In full calf bindings. Externally, worn. Nine boards detached but present and four boards held by the cords only. One front board missing. Spine labels of the second compartments missing. Internally, firmly bound except for the endpapers, several of which are detachedbut present. Some scattered foxing.         Carte des Côtes de Malabar et de Coromandel Presentée au Roy

Amsterdam: Covens & Mortier, [1742]. Engraving with period outline colour. Some mild soiling. Mild discolouration at centerfold.19 1/4 x 22 1/4 inches. 21 1/2 x 25 3/4 inches. A richly detailed map of southern India by one of the greatest French mapmakers Guillaume de l'Isle (1675-1726) was the son of a cartographer and pupil of Jean Dominique Cassini, who, among other important contributions, aligned the study of astronomy to the study of geography. Under Cassini's direction, observations were made from locations all over the world that enabled longitudinal calculations to be made with much greater accuracy. De l'Isle carried on this exacting work with remarkable dedication and integrity, constantly revising and improving his maps. While precision was his primary goal, his maps are invariably elegant and attractive. Jean (Johannes) Covens and Corneille (Cornelius) Mortier were brothers-in-law, who carried on the book publishing business established by Pierre Mortier in Amsterdam in 1685. Pierre Mortier's company owed much of its success to his access to French publishers, whose publications he re-issued in handsome editions. The elder Mortier died in 1711; his wife continued the firm until she died in 1719. In 1721, Covens and Mortier formed a partnership, Covens having married Agatha Mortier in the same year. They continued the business by publishing enlarged editions of Sanson, Jaillot, and De L'Isle, as well as some of the later Dutch cartographical masters such as De Wit and Allard, and of course Pierre Mortier. This map is from an edition of De L'Isle entitled, Atlas Nouveau, Contenant Toutes Les Parties Du Monde, Ou sont exactement Remarquées les Empires, Monarchies, Royaumes, Etats, Republiques &c. Par Guillaume de l'Isle. Premier Géographe de sa Majesté. It delineates with great care the coastal regions of southern India. Also indicated, where appropriate, are the names of the European countries in power in a particular port city, for example "Cochin aux Hollandois"; "Pondichery aux Francois". Koeman, C&M 7, #90
