Jødiske Historie Fra Verdens Begyndelse, Fortsatt Til disse Tider, Deelt udi Tvende Parter. Tom. I. + Fra Maccabæernes souveraine Regimente indtil denne Tid. Tom. II.

1742 1742 - Kbhvn.: Trykt paa Autoris Bekostning + trykt hos Ernst Henrich Berling 1742. [8] + 722; [8] + 736 s. Paul Johansen 22, 1-2. Ehrencron-Müller XI,301. Bibl. A fine set. Viner "was more [interested] in the literature of the law than in its practice. He began to collect notes of recently decided cases in 1703, but devoted the greater part of his life to the exhaustive arrangement of existing legal materials under alphabetical headings, based on the works of his predecessors Robert Brooke and Henry Rolle. His General abridgment of law and equity. was published in 23 volumes between 1742 and 1757 (the final volume posthumously). This was printed, reputedly under Viner's direction at his own home, on paper watermarked with his monogram, published by him personally, and the earlier volumes sold from his chambers in the Temple. Though unwieldy to use, it was the most comprehensive attempt to render accessible the legal materials printed before his time, and it remains an invaluable key to these works" (ODNB). The work was "printed for the author, by agreement with the law-patentees". At the beginning of each volume is a list of those who authorised the publication, including Thomas Parker (nephew of Thomas Parker, first earl of Macclesfield), and the seventeenth volume of this work is dedicated to him by the author.

At the Parliament begun and holden at Westminster, the fifth day of December, Anno Dom. 1741, in the fifteenth year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord GORGE the Second. Parliamentary Act for further Regulating the Plantation Trade; and for the Relief of Merchants Importing Prize Goods from America

Published in London, Printed by Thomas Baskett and Robert Baskett, Printers to the King's most Excellent Majesty; 1742. softcover. This first edition is in Very good+ to Near Fine condition. pp. 711-723. This if the first edition of the 18th century Parliamentary Act to further regulate the Plantation Trade and merchants importing goods from the American colonies. This act reaffirms the Navigation Acts from the 17th century and further trade regulations with the colonies. This is the earliest official printing available of this act, from the Sessional Volumes of Parliament. Acts such as this, predating 1796 are very scarce as a maximun of 1,100 copies were only ever printed at that time, which were solely available for the Members of the Houses of Parliament, the great officers and offices of state and the judiciary (ref. Report of the Committee for the Promulgation of the Statutes, 1796).There is some slight rubbing to the covers, and some pencil writing to the title label affixed to the front cover. The corners of the covers are a little creased, but internally this Act is in excellent condition with just the occasional spotor toning to show for its age. In all it is in remarkable condition for an 18th century piece. This is an exceptional piece of British trade and colonialisation history from the 18th century that is very hard to come by and, as such, would be an incredibly valuable acquisition for scholars and collectors of this period.

Carte D'Amerique Dressée pour l'Usage du Roy.1739. America Accurate in Imperia, Regna, Status & Populos Divisa, ad Usum Ludovici XV, Galliarum Regis

Covens & Mortier, Amsterdam 1742 - Engraving with period outline colour. Some mild soiling. Discolouration at centerfold. An elegant map of North and South America, the most accurate to date, produced for the "usage du Roy," Louis XV. Guillaume de l'Isle (1675-1726) was the son of a cartographer and pupil of Jean Dominique Cassini, who, among other important contributions, aligned the study of astronomy to the study of geography. Under Cassini's direction, observations were made from locations all over the world that enabled longitudinal calculations to be made with much greater accuracy. De l'Isle carried on this exacting work with remarkable dedication and integrity, constantly revising and improving his maps. While precision was his primary goal, his maps are invariably elegant and attractive. Jean (Johannes) Covens and Corneille (Cornelius) Mortier were brothers-in-law, who carried on the book publishing business established by Pierre Mortier in Amsterdam in 1685. Pierre Mortier's company owed much of its success to his access to French publishers, whose publications he re-issued in handsome editions. The elder Mortier died in 1711; his wife continued the firm until she died in 1719. In 1721, Covens and Mortier formed a partnership, Covens having married Agatha Mortier in the same year. They continued the business by publishing enlarged editions of Sanson, Jaillot, and De L'Isle, as well as some of the later Dutch cartographical masters such as De Wit and Allard, and of course Pierre Mortier. This map is from an edition of De L'Isle entitled, Atlas Nouveau, Contenant Toutes Les Parties Du Monde, Ou sont exactement Remarquées les Empires, Monarchies, Royaumes, Etats, Republiques &c. Par Guillaume de l'Isle. Premier Géographe de sa Majesté. It is his map of North and South America shown on a large enough scale that western Europe and Africa are included. The map includes the rectification of South America's eastern coast line, correcting a map of South America whose Chilean-Argentinian peninsula swung to the west. The map also includes a Prime Meridian declared by Louis XIII, but not adopted and Pope Alexander VI's Line of Demarcation that divided the world (outside of Europe) between Portugal and Spain. Finally, it should be noted that De l'Isle resisted the temptation to depict California as an island, which was being done by many mapmakers of the period. Koeman, C&M 7, #98.

        Allgemeines Europaisches Bucher-Lexicon

Leipzig: Theoph. Georgi, 1742. Hardcover. Very good. 2 vols. 458p; 348p. 34 cm hardcover bindings. Pagination does not include handwritten pages that swell the work to far greater proportions. Ex-library with bookplates and labels on endpapers. Bindings were once half-leather but little remains with exposed millboards and exposed cords on one spine. Tears, bumps, and staining. Pages within are clean and the binding remains intact and strong. A directory of Latin, French, and German texts from the beginning of printing to 1739. Such an ambitious cataloguing project is near impossible; however, the challenge is reflected in the handwritten pages that are bound throughout the two volumes, suggesting that that the work was not intended as a complete work. Instead, the Lexicon is was a living project for the owner to continue. As a document of European printing history, it is a spectacular project, and the handwritten pages demonstrate the committment of the owner who continued the project within its pages. In addition, the printed works are presented in three separate typefaces. A unique representation of bibliographical scholarship and a valuable collectors item for the modern bibliophile.

New principles of gunnery: containing, the determination of the force of gun-powder, and an investigation of the difference in the resisting power of the air to swift and slow motions.

London: J. Nourse 1742 - 8vo., folding engraved plate, lvii + (1) + 95 + (1)pp., with 4 figures in the text, bound in the mid-20th century in oatmeal holland cloth with a morocco label on spine lettered in gilt. A very good copy. First edition. Riling 233. A landmark contribution to the literature of mechanics, most particularly in the scientific study of ballistics and the development of fluid mechanics, by the mathematician and military engineer, Benjamin Robins, F.R.S. (1707-1751). 'New Principles of Gunnery> transformed ballistics into a Newtonian science. Galileo's vacuum theory was the only practical theory before 1742, but only for low-velocity mortars as demonstrated in Bélidor's Le bombardier français> (1731). Robins made it applicable for gunpowder weaponry in general. His key contribution was the invention and utilization of the ballistic pendulum. With Huygens's law of pendulum motion and Newton's law of linear momentum, he deduced the bullet's impact velocity from the subsequent swing angle. Robins then used the ballistic pendulum to verify his interior-ballistics theory, relying on Boyle's law, the thirty-ninth proposition from book one of the Principia,> and the pneumatic chemistry techniques of Francis Hauksbee the elder and Stephen Hales. By applying Newton's second law of motion to velocity measurements at varying ranges, Robins also obtained the air-resistance force acting on musket balls. This revealed the significant limitations of Galileo's vacuum ballistics theory and of Newton's air-resistance function when approaching the speed of sound. . Robins's substantial accomplishments in mathematical theory, scientific discovery, technical practice, and literary production place him at the forefront of the British Enlightenment.' [Brett D. Steele in ODNB]. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Istoria del Decamerone di Giovanni Boccaccio - Scritta da Domenico Maria Manni - Accademico Fiorentino. Si vende da Antonio Ristori dirimpetto alla Posta, in Firenze, 1742. Con Licenza de Superiori. Author Domenico Maria Manni (1690-1788) was an editor, historian, & scholar. He was born & died in Florence, & was the son of a printer. Oxford Reference Online notes that Manni was "Director of the Biblioteca Strozzi in Florence, who edited early texts & published works of antiquarian & literary scholarship, including a useful Istoria del Decamerone (1742).". FIRST EDITION. Published by Antonio Ristori in Florence in 1742. Interestingly, this copy from the Library of HOLLAND HOUSE, with original printed BOOKPLATE affixed to front pastedown. Most likely from the collection of Henry Fox, 1st Baron Holland (1705-1774), with his crowned fox-motif coat-of-arms bookplate with "Holland House" printed below & Latin motto "Vitam Impendere Vero" incorporated into the design. Henry Fox, a leading British politician of the 18th century, had begun living at the mansion in 1746, & bought it in 1768. He was Leader of the House of Commons, & notably held the posts of Secretary for War, Southern Secretary & Paymaster of the Forces, but while widely tipped as a future Prime Minister, he never held that office. He was the father of Charles James Fox. "Holland House, originally known as Cope Castle, was a great house in Kensington in London, situated in what is now Holland Park. Created in 1605 in the Elizabethan or Jacobean style for the diplomat Sir Walter Cope, the building later passed to the powerful Rich family, then the Fox family, under whose ownership it became a noted gathering-place for Whigs in the 19th century. Holland House has hosted many kings & queens among its illustrious guests. The house became noted as a glittering social, literary & political centre with many celebrated visitors such as Byron, Thomas Macaulay, Benjamin Disraeli, Charles Dickens & Sir Walter Scott. Joseph Addison, the English author & politician, died in the building in 1719. At the beginning of the 20th century, Holland House had the largest private grounds of any house in London, including Buckingham Palace. The house was largely destroyed in 1940 during World War II by German bombing raids, with only the east wing, &, miraculously, almost all of the library remaining undamaged." A widely-published iconic photograph exists of the damage to the library. Thick volume. Laid paper. Wide margins. Bound in contemporary FULL VELLUM, spine gilt-lettered with "Manni Illustra del Boccacc" within gilt border, green ribbon page marker. Covers with typical age wear & toning, slight wear to spine ends & edges, small handwritten ink shelf marks to pastedowns & bookplate, faint staining to plate at p.xi, otherwise overall a nice tight & complete vellum-bound copy. Internally clean & crisp. Full pagination as follows: ffep, half-title page, [blank], title page, coat of arms, v-xxx (dedication, introduction & contents), + 672pp, rear endpaper [Actually 678pp in apparently all copies, with pp.131-136 repeated in pagination, with different content]. With aggiunte correzioni (added corrections) printed at rear (pp.664-672). Page 144 misprinted as 134, p.228 misprinted as 128. Scarce FIRST EDITION & UNIQUE copy from the Library of Holland House.         The Life and Exploits of the ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote de la Mancha. Translated from the Original Spanish?by Charles Jarvis

      - Engraved frontis. port. of Cervantes by Virtue, several engraved head-pieces, & 67 engraved plates. xxiii, [8], [xxv]-xxxii, vi, [2], 90, [14] (first leaf a blank), 355 pp.; xii, 388 pp. Two vols. Large 4to, cont. speckled calf (joints very expertly repaired), spines gilt, brown & green morocco lettering pieces on spines. London: J. & R. Tonson & R. Dodsley, 1742. First edition of this esteemed translation and a wonderful association copy; this set belonged to Edward Gibbon and bears his bookplate in each volume. Gibbon was known for the wide range of his reading and he refers to this work in several of his letters and writings. He clearly liked this text; he owned an Ibarra edition in Spanish (1782), two editions of Smollett's translation (1755 and 1770), and the present edition. Jarvis (1675-1739), was a portrait painter and translator. A part of the literary circle of Addison, Pope, and Swift, his stylized portraits of society ladies were very fashionable. Jarvis advised Sir Robert Walpole in forming his art collection and was appointed king's painter in 1723. "His major literary undertaking was an English translation of Cervantes' Don Quixote. Published posthumously in 1742 and frequently reprinted, it is generally acknowledged as being close in spirit to the original."-ODNB. The superb engravings are mostly signed by John Vanderbank (1694-1739), painter and draughtsman. They were first used in the 1738 quarto edition of Don Quixote issued by the Tonsons in the original Spanish. The 90 pages in Vol. I print the first English translation of Mayans & Siscar's important Life of Cervantes. Fine and handsome set with his fine armorial bookplate in each volume. Minor rubbing and wear to extremities. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

A Treatise of Fluxions In Two Books

Edinburgh : T.W. and T. Ruddimans, MDCCXLII [1742]. First edition. Two volumes, quarto, contemporary calf (scuffed and worn, rebacked and recased, preserving the original title labels). Vol. I: previous owner's wet stamps to front paste down and half title, early newspaper clippings to first blank opposite the half title, half title, title page (early ownership inscriptions of James Boone, 1782, and Edward Wilson, 1878, verso), dedication leaf (ownership inscription by Wilson, verso), pp vi, later manuscript table of contents on lined paper inserted after preface, 412, 24 folding engraved plates (the first has been extracted and dissected with the relevant diagrams pasted on the corresponding pages). Vol. II: previous owner's wet stamps to preliminaries, title page (with inscriptions as in Vol I), pp 413-763, errata, 16 folding engraved plates, extensive manuscript calculations by Boone to pp 544 - 550, both volumes with preliminary and end leaves showing marginal water staining and repairs to the gutters. "The earliest logical and systematic publication of the Newtonian methods" (Dictionary of Scientific Biography). The Scottish mathematician Colin Maclaurin'sTreatise of Fluxions, published fifteen years after Newton's death, was a response to Bishop George Berkeley's criticisms of Newtonian method in infinitesimal calculus. Fluxion, in Newton's notation, is the derivative of any continuous function. Newton's notation of fluxions was eventually superceded by Leibniz's notation of derivatives, which remains dominant in the vocabulary of modern calculus. Among Maclaurin's numerous other contributions to mathematics were his expansion of Newton's ellipsoid theory of the Earth as outlined in Principia, and his pioneering of the empirical study of the rotation of astronomical bodies in the framework of classical physics. The first ownership inscriptions in these two volumes are those of James Boone, Junior (1744-1795), a member of one of the most significant Pennsylvania pioneer families, which most notably included his cousin, the frontiersman Daniel Boone. James Boone Junior was known as an outstanding mathematician from an early age, and he studied in Philadelphia to become a schoolmaster. Books from Boone's library are characterised by his neat and studious annotations, and the marginal annotations present in Volume II represent an early application of Maclaurin's angular momentum of elliptical body theories. These are calculations of various dimensions of the earth, reconciled with the predictions calculated from Newton's Theory of Gravity. Boone's namesake, James Boone Senior (1709-1785) emigrated from England around 1720 and was a prominent Justice of the Peace in Exeter, Pennsylvania. Boone Senior's support of the colonial cause during the American Revolution has been recognised by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR Ancestor # A012104).
