*** [Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. (I.E. 240) ; (4) 280pp., 6 parties en 3 volumes reliés. (POPEIANA)
London: Various publishers, 1740-1741. Together, 9 works in one vlume. 1 vols. Folio. "Are These Things So?" -- "Yes They Are" -- "They Are Not". A remarkable collection of poems arising from James Miller's poem Are These Things So?, an attack on Walpole written in the voice of Pope. It generated enormous controversy and a host of responses and counter-attacks. Miller even penned his own response in the voice of Walpole ("The Great Man's Answer," included here), in which the Prime Minister inadvertently skewers himself. The subtitle of the original was clearly intended to suggest Alexander Pope, and probably to hint at his authorship -- the Dublin editions even go so far as to attribute the poem to him. The playwright James Miller has, however, always been identified as responsible; but, as James McLaverty points out, the first edition was printed by John Wright, who worked closely with Pope, "and it seems unlikely that he could have been involved without Pope's consent." Pope was not sorry to see confusion about whether or not he had written the poem, and it is possible that he saw the first edition through the press. In that case, the many alterations of which Miller complains in this second edition were probably Pope's own doing. This volume, although rebound and in some places cut too close by the original binder, is an excellent collection of both the original text and the many replies. Some of the poems are really rare -- Newcomb's attacking Supplement (2) and the anonymous They Are Not (6) seem to be recorded in a few copies only. H[arris], James
London: by H. Woodfall, 1741. First edition. Inserted frontispiece of the Author after Bartolozzi. 1 vols. 8vo. Inscribed, Presentation Binding. Inscribed on the flyleaf: "J. Shaftesbury | Given me by James Harris 1751." James Harris (1709-1780) was the eldest son of James Harris by his second wife Lady Elizabeth Ashley Cooper, third daughter of the second Lord Shaftsbury (died 1699), and sister of the third Lord Shaftsbury (1671-1713); the fourth earl, Anthony Ashley Cooper, lived from 1711 - 1771. The inscription of 1751 would therefore most probably be to the fourth Earl, Harris's cousin Splendid copy of this ground-breaking early work on the theory of language and grammar: the notion of a "universal grammar," in fact, has now become the standard thinking among post-Chomskyian linguists. -

PRAGUE MONASTERY KITCHEN
1741. Manuscript on paper. Tall narrow folio (445 x 185 mm), German manuscript in a neat hand in brown ink, 76 leaves, including section titles to each month, followed by tables filled in with relevant information (see below). Fine contemporary calf, covers richly blind tooled with ornamental and floral borders, spine with five raised bands, and gilt tooled red morocco label, four apple green silk ties (upper joint cracked at foot and lower joint cracked at top). An unusual glimpse into the eating habits of a religious community in Prague in the 1740s during the turmoil of War of the Austrian Succession. Their diet is astounding, and the community did not stint on their food comfort even in times of war. Frederick the Great of Prussia was fighting Maria Theresia of Austria in the War of the Austrian Succession (1740/41) in neighbouring Silesia; and the Prince-Elector of Bavaria allied with the French was marching his army through Bohemia, conquering Prague in November 1741. This is a detailed, monthly, inventory of the many foods which were bought into the monastery?s kitchen and then promptly consumed by the brethren in the course of one year. Quantities of food delivered are juxtaposed with those eaten, with the specific foodstuff noted at top and quantities in rows, subdivided into days below. The food is listed in groups. Such as staples: ?Hafer, Gries, Hirse, Linsen, Erbsen, Mehl (schwartz, mittel, oder weiss), Brot, Semmeln?, i.e. oats, semolina, millet, lentils, peas, flour (black, middle, or white), bread, and rolls. There are ?Eier, Saltz, Käs, Schmalz, Butter (ges … [Click Below for Full Description]

Andry was the first to note the active participation of muscles in producing deformities of the skeletal system, and he therefore stressed the importance of exercise, correct posture, and sensible clothing in the treatment of deformities. He also employed mechanical aids. The book contains many basic observations on the pathological condition of the musculo - skeletal system which have became principles of orthopaedic surgery. It is divided into four sections: a general anatomical survey of the structure of the body, the preventation and correction of deformities, the treatment of deformities in the extremities and head, and the treatment of voice defects. Vierte vermehrte und verbesserte Auflage. - Leipzig, bey Caspar Fritsch, 1741, gr.-8°, Portraitfrontispiz, 8, 121, (7) pp., 28 (inkl. Portrait, 16/17, 22/23 Doppel-) Kupfertafeln, Halbledereinband d.Zt.; wie immer minimal gebräunt. The "Anatomische Tabellen" were even translated into Japanese. After the Japanese physicians MAYENO RYOTAKU (1723-1804), GENPAKU SUGITA (1733-1817), and JUN'AN NAKAGAWA (1739-1786) had convinced themselves the 4th of March 1771 in Kotsukappara, near Edo, by the dissection of an executed, about 50 years old Japanese woman, Aocha-Baba (Mother Green Tea), that those "Tabellen" presented the true anatomical relations, thus demonstrated that anatomy as it had been taught in Japan up to that time was false. "The book in no way differed from what we saw before us. If we could translate parts of this Tâheru Anatomia we could gain a clear understanding entirely and advance medicine beyond its present level." Genpaku Sugita, Rangaku katohajime (1815). So Kaitai Shinsho (New Book on Human Dissections) was the first complete translation of a medical work which originated on a German text. It represented an empirical approach to nature, which was undermining the prestige of Chinese medicine in Japan. It took about 4 years and eleven attempts to translate it, and was edited by GENPAKU SUGITA in 1774. The translator MAYENO RYOTAKU didn't sign it because of his extreme modesty. -cf. Hirsch-H. John Senex (1678-1740) was a kind of Renaissance man of the 18th-century map world, working at times as a scholar, surveyor, engraver, astrologer, book seller and publisher of maps, atlases and globes. In a short period, he developed from an apprentice into one of the most important cartographers of the period and became a Fellow of the Royal Society of London, as well as Official Geographer to Queen Anne of Great Britain. Although well regarded for his pocket-size maps, Senex is probably best known for his globes, which display a knowledge of astronomy equal to the skill of their craftsmanship. After his death in 1740 his wife Mary continued his business and continued to produce and sell cartographic works of high quality. Together, their work represents a successful and valuable partnership in 18th-century mapmaking and publishing.

GALILEI (Galileo) - Galilée - BERNEGGER (Matthias)
Milano, Francesco Agnelli. Unusual last and largest Italian edition, the fourth of the “Operazioni del compasso” first published in 1606 without illustration (certainly for commercial reasons). In 1612, Matthias Bernegger published an unauthorized translation where he added an extensive section explaining in greater detail the construction and use of the compass. The 1612 edition was published again, still in latine, in 1635. In 1639, appeared a second Italian edition, a third in all, but without the Bernegger’s additions. Finally, in 1741 (the present edition), the Bernegger’s commentaries was translated in Italian and published to give the largest Italian edition of Galilei’s Operazioni del compasso. Quite rare, A fine copy, one tear in the inner fold of the engraving but fine. Antique print, untitled. This plate shows the muscles on the back of a man standing in front of a tree and stones. Wandelaar placed his skeletons and musclemen against lush ornamental backgrounds to give them the illusion of vitality, using contrasts of mass and light to produce a three-dimensional effect.
