Zt.: kleine Restaurationen an den Einbänden, ansonsten feines Expl. Rare First Edition! The first book on orthopaedics, a term introduced by Andry, and the book which gave the speciality its name. Andry was the first to note the active participation of muscles in producing deformities of the skeletal system, and he therefore stressed the importance of exercise, correct posture, and sensible clothing in the treatment of deformities. He also employed mechanical aids. The book contains many basic observations on the pathological condition of the musculo - skeletal system which have became principles of orthopaedic surgery. It is divided into four sections: a general anatomical survey of the structure of the body, the preventation and correction of deformities, the treatment of deformities in the extremities and head, and the treatment of voice defects. The Suite, which is present in this copy, is very rarely found. Kulmus, Johann Adam
Vierte vermehrte und verbesserte Auflage. - Leipzig, bey Caspar Fritsch, 1741, gr.-8°, Portraitfrontispiz, 8, 121, (7) pp., 28 (inkl. Portrait, 16/17, 22/23 Doppel-) Kupfertafeln, Halbledereinband d.Zt.; wie immer minimal gebräunt. The "Anatomische Tabellen" were even translated into Japanese. After the Japanese physicians MAYENO RYOTAKU (1723-1804), GENPAKU SUGITA (1733-1817), and JUN'AN NAKAGAWA (1739-1786) had convinced themselves the 4th of March 1771 in Kotsukappara, near Edo, by the dissection of an executed, about 50 years old Japanese woman, Aocha-Baba (Mother Green Tea), that those "Tabellen" presented the true anatomical relations, thus demonstrated that anatomy as it had been taught in Japan up to that time was false. "The book in no way differed from what we saw before us. If we could translate parts of this Tâheru Anatomia we could gain a clear understanding entirely and advance medicine beyond its present level." Genpaku Sugita, Rangaku katohajime (1815). So Kaitai Shinsho (New Book on Human Dissections) was the first complete translation of a medical work which originated on a German text. It represented an empirical approach to nature, which was undermining the prestige of Chinese medicine in Japan. It took about 4 years and eleven attempts to translate it, and was edited by GENPAKU SUGITA in 1774. The translator MAYENO RYOTAKU didn't sign it because of his extreme modesty. -cf. Hirsch-H. John Senex (1678-1740) was a kind of Renaissance man of the 18th-century map world, working at times as a scholar, surveyor, engraver, astrologer, book seller and publisher of maps, atlases and globes. In a short period, he developed from an apprentice into one of the most important cartographers of the period and became a Fellow of the Royal Society of London, as well as Official Geographer to Queen Anne of Great Britain. Although well regarded for his pocket-size maps, Senex is probably best known for his globes, which display a knowledge of astronomy equal to the skill of their craftsmanship. After his death in 1740 his wife Mary continued his business and continued to produce and sell cartographic works of high quality. Together, their work represents a successful and valuable partnership in 18th-century mapmaking and publishing.

GALILEI (Galileo) - Galilée - BERNEGGER (Matthias)
Milano, Francesco Agnelli. Unusual last and largest Italian edition, the fourth of the “Operazioni del compasso” first published in 1606 without illustration (certainly for commercial reasons). In 1612, Matthias Bernegger published an unauthorized translation where he added an extensive section explaining in greater detail the construction and use of the compass. The 1612 edition was published again, still in latine, in 1635. In 1639, appeared a second Italian edition, a third in all, but without the Bernegger’s additions. Finally, in 1741 (the present edition), the Bernegger’s commentaries was translated in Italian and published to give the largest Italian edition of Galilei’s Operazioni del compasso. Antique print, untitled. This plate shows the muscles on the back of a man standing in front of a tree and stones. Wandelaar placed his skeletons and musclemen against lush ornamental backgrounds to give them the illusion of vitality, using contrasts of mass and light to produce a three-dimensional effect. The most famous plate in the atlas depicts a skeletal figure standing in front of an enormous grazing rhinoceros, sketched by Wandelaar from the first living specimen in Europe, which had arrived at Amsterdam zoo in 1741" (Norman). Etching/engraving on Hand laid (verge) paper. Description: This print originates from: "Tabulae sceleti et musculorum corporis humani", Leyden: 1747. Rare. His anatomical engravings (for Ruysch' Opera and Albinus Tabulae) are the main base for his renown and highly esteemed. He died in Leyden. Bernhard Siegfried Albinus (born Weiss, 1697-1770) was a German-born Dutch anatomist. His father was professor of medicine in Frankfurt, but later transferred to Leyden. HAUBER, Eberhard David
1741. "the richest body of materials for the study on [witchcraft]." - Burr (on Hauber's Scripta Magica) This famous work on witchcraft is one of the most important 18th-century studies on the subject. Eberhard Hauber wrote a series of 36 essays and treatises on witchcraft from 1738 through 1744, which were published in three separate tomes. This third volume, complete within itself, includes 12 parts (25-36) and includes incredible and bizarre, full and double-page engravings. This set of treatises concerns the power of the devil in the physical world. The book includes a frontispiece portrait of Balthazar Bekker, a key proponent in ending persecution for witchcraft in 17th-century Europe. The occult nature of this book deals with idolatry and magic and their importance in witchcraft and devil worship. Hauber wrote this work as a response to the number of exorcisms and devil expulsions in 18th-century Europe. [Attributes: First Edition]

[VOC].
Not in Landwehr & V.d. Krogt, VOC; NCC; STCN; cf. Kroniek van Nederland, pp. 557-559. Extremely rare missive from the directors of the Dutch East India Company (VOC), written in what would be the first years of the decline of the company. In 1741 the charter of the VOC was extended in a secret resolution of the States General, despite the rising debts and growing signs of corruption. Upon this resolution, the colonial administrator Van Imhoff (1705-1750), newly reinstated after his opposition to the brutal 1740 Batavia massacre, proposes several measures to reinvigorate the company. In the present publication the directors comment on these measures and they conclude with a list of regulations to be followed by the company's personnel, to prevent corruption and other misbehaviour. We could only locate one other copy of the missive. Two shorter, separately published, related documents are added.First leaf a bit frayed and the two added documents are separated from the bookblock, otherwise in very good condition.

[Boston printing] Whitefield, George.
Early Boston edition of Whitefield's journey from Savannah to Rhode Island and later his departure for New York; George Whitefield was an English Anglican, and in addition to being remembered as one of the founders of Methodism, also engendered enthusiasm for the Great Awakening during his travels through the British American Colonies. The "Continuation" is part of a series, begun in 1738 -printed in London-, though complete in itself, and in the rare Boston printing. "[Whitefield's] influence in America, entirely apart from that which he exerted in Great-Britain, was many-sided and far reaching. With his advent a religious awakening already begun was greatly stimulated and a burst of evangelical activity occurred that had a marked effect not only on the religious and social life but on the political as well... Although others contributed greatly to this movement, Whitefield was its most dynamic representative, its unifying elements and the personification of its tendencies..." DAB. Evans 4847; Hows W374.

Feuerwerk - [Amadée François] Frézier
La Haye [Den Haag] J Neaulme. 12°. 1 Bl., XVIII, 394 S., 3 Bl. Mit 8 Kupfertafeln und 3 (2 wiederh.) gest. Textvignetten. Lederband d. Zt. mit Streicheiseneinfassungen auf 4 Bünden. Philip F 1103: »Frezier was probably one of the most influential writers on pyrotechnics in the mid-18th century and some of his editions are still fairly common today [.]. In 1741 Neaulme issued a pirated edition which again, apart from variations on the title page, is identical to the 1706 edition«. - Partington, Greek fire, S. 177: »describes coloured fires, Roman candles, set pieces, fireworks burning under water, etc. and is particularly detailed on rockets, incl. those of repeated flight [.], i. e. the prototype of the modern stratosphere rockets and also military rockets containing devices which caused them to rotate in flight«.
Haye, Chez J. Neaulme, 1741. Small 8vo. Cont. full mottled calf w. five raised bands on back, back richly gilt. Small holes and lack of leather to lower capital and back-hinge, due to insect-bites. Bdg. somewhat worn. Internally a bit of brownspotting and occationally a little soiling, but overall fine. Engr. frontispiece (= engr. t-p. dated 1707), 8 full-page engr. plates and 3 about half-page engr. vignettes. (6), XVIII, 394, (6) pp. ¶ This is the Dutch reprint (in French) (also called the "pirated edition") of the first edition from 1706/07, with the engraved title-page from this. The second edition appeared in 1747. "In 1741 Neaulme issued a pirated edition which again, apart from variations on the title-page, is identical to the 1706 edition. Encouraged by this pirated edition Frezier wrote a second edition which appeared in 1747 in three differing versions." (C. Philip, p. 59). Very important reference-work on firewirks. "Frezier was probably one of the most important pyrotechnics in the mid 18th century..." (C. Philip, p. 58). He borrows heavily from other authors, but his works are interesting, also as they scrupulously cite the sources. The plates show different kinds of fireworks, with many illustrations on each and the vignettes show displays of fireworks, as this work also deals much with the conduct and displaying of these.
