[AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] New edition, after the original was published in 1681. The second part has its own title page. Full Sheepskin and speckled brown ice contemporary. Back tooled raised. Part of title in red morocco. Head cap restored. Tail partly torn. Corners bumped. Reissue of the classic that was the manners of Israelite; for the first time, a book praised the people without prejudice. Christian morals were published in 1682 for the first time, the two works are almost always assembled thereafter. Voltaire said of this author that it was more plhilosophe historian, because if it is true … [Click Below for Full Description]

H[arris], James
London: by H. Woodfall, 1741 - Inscribed on the flyleaf: "J. Shaftesbury | Given me by James Harris 1751." James Harris (1709-1780) was the eldest son of James Harris by his second wife Lady Elizabeth Ashley Cooper, third daughter of the second Lord Shaftsbury (died 1699), and sister of the third Lord Shaftsbury (1671- 1713); the fourth earl, Anthony Ashley Cooper, lived from 1711 - 1771. The inscription of 1751 would therefore most probably be to the fourth Earl, Harris's cousin Splendid copy of this ground-breaking early work on the theory of language and grammar: the notion of a "universal grammar," in fact, has now become the standard thinking among post-Chomskyian linguists First edition. 8vo.
Cioranescu, XVIII, 44070. Haag VII, 344 (III).

Holberg's satire was first published in Latin to gain a wide audience, which it did. The book was never banned in Denmark, though it was unpopular among religious powers of the time. "Holberg was one of the leading scholars and playwrights of the eighteenth century, perhaps the chief literary figure in Denmark to date. [Oldmixon, John]:
London. 1741.. Two volumes. xxiv,[2],567,[1]; [2],478pp. plus eight folding maps. Bound to style in speckled calf, gilt, spines gilt, leather labels. Light scattered foxing. A very good set. "Second edition, corrected and amended," with the history brought down to the date of publication, and including for the first time the story of William Penn and the Indian princess, as told by Penn to the author. A basic 18th-century reference work on British America. This is the second edition, considerably enlarged and expanded from the first edition of 1708. The first volume is devoted to the North American colonies and includes maps of North America, the islands of Canada, New England, Virginia and Maryland, and Carolina and Bermuda. The second volume covers the British colonies in the West Indies and contains maps of Barbados, Jamaica, and St. Kitts and Antigua. An important contemporary work, which probably would have been the first point of reference for any Englishman at the time. Oldmixon's name is signed to the dedication of the first edition only, and Sabin suggests authorship be attributed to Moll, who produced the maps. HOWES O61. SABIN 57157. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 741/164.
