MENAGEOT, Augustin
1741. Engraving with superb early colour. Printed on laid watermarked paper. In excellent condition with the exception of a small mended tear in the upper margin. Image size: 11 5/8 x 17 3/4 inches. A fascinating view, with superb early colour, of the festivities surrounding the encampment on the Isle of Wight. This is a stunning print depicting the festivities surrounding a military encampment on the Isle of Wight in 1741. It represents George II's preparations for the invasion of Europe to participate in the War of the Austrian Succession. George's primary concern was that Hanover would be secure, but he, and England, were ostensibly allied to Maria Theresa, Hapsburg Empress. The image shows officers entertaining well-dressed women on a hill above a parade ground. One clearly gets the impression of an army not yet engaged in bloodshed or in imminent danger. There is lots of drinking and romance, which makes it probable that this represents the army to its departure to Flanders. The original was painted by the French painter Augustin Menageot who was better known for his success as a fine art dealer than for his picturesque paintings. There is little known about the life and work of Augustin Menageot, except that he was the father of the celebrated history painter Francois Guillaume Menageot, but this superb view bears witness to Menageot's artistic skill. Menageot combines a precisely balanced composition with a lively display of animated figures to create a captivating image that bustles with life. This remarkable impression, with superb early colour … [Click Below for Full Description]

saying that "Barnard is a man of experience in training applemunching urchins, and his testimony in favour of Mr Trimmer's establishment, to use the fashionable term by which schools are advertised in and about London, is very strong ... young Barnard ... seems the very mirror of schoolboyhood for he can read Hebrew & construe Hecuba & yet has not reached his twelfth year", but asks if that "will teach him todiscern between the wool of a Ewe, a Lamb or a Hog ?", the name "reminds one of well trained schools & good little books ... Anne [Dury's wife] says I must write a stiff business like letter, which all the ... Sugdens from Walker up to William, including Martha in bed, may read", he talks amusingly of the recent change of Government, of the cold, "the thermometer nearly paid the debt of nature for it fell to 1 above zero -- at Hoddesdon to zero according to Caro[line], who returned today from a visit to the Barnards", and of the plans "prepared by Mr Gill" for a new church at Keighley, for which he may have to borrow money, he gives detailed instructions for Frederic and Edwin [the writer's son] to unlock Anne's cabinet where they are stored, "Man wants but little here below", as Wellesley Pole said when courting Miss Long with 50000 a year, "upon which someone added, but wants that little Long", in a P.S. he asks "about your flittings ? POPE, Alexander.
London: for Henry Lintot; for R. Dodsley, and Sold by T. Cooper, 1741-3. 9 volumes, crown octavo. Contemporary sprinkled calf, double gilt rules, early morocco labels, red sprinkled edges. Rubbed, some joints starting, spine ends a little chipped (quite noticeably at the head of vol. II), boards a little bowed, but generally a very pleasing contemporary set, the contents clean and fresh, the bindings still firm. Engraved portrait frontispiece in vol. I; all but the first title-page printed in red and black; with half-titles where called for. Some early MS. notes on the first front endpapers and occasionally elsewhere. First editions of the last three volumes. The bibliography of editions of Pope's Works produced during the last few years of his life is complex, as were Pope's dealings with publishers and the various small amendments made as the volumes went through the press. Dodsley and Cooper were the main publishers who handled this work: their names appear together in vols. 3 to 5 which are dated 1743; and in vols. 6 and 9, which are dated 1742. Cooper's name alone appears in the imprint for vols. 7 and 8, both dated 1742, though Griffith suggests that this does not imply that Dodsley had no hand in these volumes. But Henry Lintot retained the copyright to vols. 1 and 2, which have his name as publisher, dated 1743 and 1741 respectively. The early volumes are essentially close reprints of earlier octavo editions, though there is some very minor new matter: vols. 7, 8 and 9 (the Letters) are first printings. WOUWERMAN, After Philips (1619-1668)
Paris: Moyreau, 1741. Hand-coloured engraving on laid paper by Moyreau. Very good condition apart from some overall light soiling and minor foxing, mild rippling, and a small stain in the top right corner of the sheet. A few small brown and black spots in the left margin. A fine composition showing a soldier or cavalryman returning home to his family. This beautifully coloured print is one of many engravings Jean Moyreau (1690-1762) made of Wouwerman's paintings. Born into a family of Dutch artists in Haarlem in 1619, the prolific draughtsman and painter Philips Wouwerman was primarily renowned for his lively battle and hunting scenes. After an early elementary introduction to the art of painting by his father, Paulus Joostens, he trained with the landscape painter Jan Wynants (1620-1679) and briefly worked in the Hamburg studio of the history painter Everard Decker (d. 1647) around 1638. Wouwerman later returned to Haarlem, where he joined the Guild of St. Luke, which later elected him to the office of vinder in 1646. His elegantly rendered, distinctive works, which are characterized by their luminous colour and detailed, animated treatment of figures and landscape alike, were extremely popular in the seventeenth century as well as the nineteenth century, during which they were zealously collected. In addition to his hunting scenes, Wouwerman's varied and substantial repertoire of subjects included military and battle scenes, landscapes, travellers, animals and genre subjects. Cf. Urlsperger, Samuel:
Halle. 1741-1752.. Nine volumes in all, with the Tomo Chachi Mico plate appearing as the frontispiece in the first. First volume (thick quarto) in contemporary three-quarter speckled vellum and boards, seven volumes in later plain wrappers, and one volume in modern brown cloth. Tomo Chachi Mico plate in first volume trimmed close, worn on edges. Uniformly internally clean. Very good. The first volume lacks the two maps. A virtually complete collection of these vital sources for the early history of Georgia. The 1741 collected edition (after the originals issued separately in parts beginning in 1735) of the first six parts of these important annual accounts of the Salzburger settlements in Georgia, commonly known as "the Salzburger Tracts," here accompanied by six additional continuations and two partial anthologies. These settlements began when a group of German settlers from Salzburg, fleeing religious persecution at home, accepted the invitation of Gen. James Oglethorpe, the founder of Georgia, to settle there in 1734. By 1741 some twelve hundred Salzburgers were living in Georgia, and these volumes are both a history and a promotional work for further settlement. Included in the first (and most important) volume is the original relation, AUSFUHRLICHE NACHRICHT, nearly three thousand pages long, followed by the first five continuations. The six later continuations are each bound separately. "This series of NACHRICHTEN is one of the most important source works on the history of Georgia, being the contemporary accounts of the German settlements in the province..." - De Renn … [Click Below for Full Description]

Haye, Chez J. Neaulme, 1741. Small 8vo. Cont. full mottled calf w. five raised bands on back, back richly gilt. Small holes and lack of leather to lower capital and back-hinge, due to insect-bites. Bdg. somewhat worn. Internally a bit of brownspotting and occationally a little soiling, but overall fine. Engr. frontispiece (= engr. t-p. dated 1707), 8 full-page engr. plates and 3 about half-page engr. vignettes. (6), XVIII, 394, (6) pp. This is the Dutch reprint (in French) (also called the "pirated edition") of the first edition from 1706/07, with the engraved title-page from this. The second edition appeared in 1747. "In 1741 Neaulme issued a pirated edition which again, apart from variations on the title-page, is identical to the 1706 edition. Encouraged by this pirated edition Frezier wrote a second edition which appeared in 1747 in three differing versions." (C. Philip, p. 59). Very important reference-work on firewirks. "Frezier was probably one of the most important pyrotechnics in the mid 18th century." (C. Philip, p. 58). He borrows heavily from other authors, but his works are interesting, also as they scrupulously cite the sources. The first important use in fiction of Edmond Halley's theory that the earth (and other planets) consist of concentric nested spheres surrounding a small central sun.
