CRAMER, John Andrew
London: Tho. Woodward, 1741. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. With 6 folding engraved plates of laboratory apparatus. Contemporary calf, rebacked; interior excellent. A beautiful copy. First edition in English, greatly enlarged from the first edition printed in Latin in 1739. One of the first of it's kind, this treatise contains the entire art of theoretical and practical assaying. The illustrations and descriptions of instruments and apparatus are considered exceptionally accurate. In addition, Cramer here first describes the use of the blowpipe in smelting small amounts of substances and in analyzing them. Of particular interest is the prefixed list of the chief English authors who have written on minerals and metals. The preface includes references to Agricola, Ercker and Stahl. Cramer (1710-77), according to Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie and to Partington, was the best assayer of his time, and is "justly reckoned among the best writers on the subject" (Baumer). He was appointed director of the Brunswick Mining and Metallurgy Administration in the Harz mountains. In 1738-39 he traveled throughout England in order to learn more about assaying, and gave lectures in London.

Benedictus Pereyra
Eborae: cum facultate Superiorem, ex Typographia Academiae, 1741. Folio, 3 parts in 1; pp. [6], 970, [2]; 128; 125; title page printed in red and black; full contemporary mottled calf, gilt-decorated spine in 6 compartments, red morocco label in 1, edges stained red; the second through the 12th leaf have small old repairs at the top out corner occasionally affecting a letter or word (sense remains clear); extremities rubbed; in all, a very good, sound copy. Portuguese-Latin / Latin-Portuguese dictionary, first published in 1646. Benedict Pereira (1535-1610) was a Spanish Jesuit philosopher, professor, and theologian, better known for his philosophical writings and exegetical dissertations than for this dictionary, although the dictionary remained in print in various iterations for more than a century. Not in Vancil; this edition not in Zaunmuller. There are 6 OCLC records for this book, every one of them for a 1741 9th edition and with different pagination. OCLC does record a 10th edition, but for 1750, and again with different pagination. NUC agrees with OCLC. Hard to believe this is unrecorded but we can find no record of a 10th edition printed in 1741.

Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. Oliver Cromwell (25 April 1599 - 3 September 1658) was an English military and political leader and later Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland and Ireland. Born into the middle gentry, albeit to a family descended from the sister of Henry VIII's minister Thomas Cromwell, Cromwell was relatively obscure for the first 40 years of his life. After undergoing a religious conversion in the 1630s, he became an independent puritan, taking a generally tolerant view towards the many Protestant sects of his period. An intensely religious man--a self-styled Puritan Moses--he fervently believed that God was guiding his victories. He was elected Member of Parliament for Huntingdon in 1628 and for Cambridge in the Short (1640) and Long (1640-49) Parliaments. He entered the English Civil War on the side of the "Roundheads" or Parliamentarians. Nicknamed "Old Ironsides", he was quickly promoted from leading a single cavalry troop to become one of the principal commanders of the New Model Army, playing an important role in the defeat of the royalist forces. 1741 A Copy Of Oliver Cromwell's Manifesto Against Spain James I Charles I Description: Up … [Click Below for Full Description]

Antique print, untitled. This plate shows the muscles on the front of a male figure, standing in a garden at the bottom of stairs, with a lion on a pedestal behind him. Wandelaar placed his skeletons and musclemen against lush ornamental backgrounds to give them the illusion of vitality, using contrasts of mass and light to produce a three-dimensional effect. The most famous plate in the atlas depicts a skeletal figure standing in front of an enormous grazing rhinoceros, sketched by Wandelaar from the first living specimen in Europe, which had arrived at Amsterdam zoo in 1741" (Norman). Etching/engraving on Hand laid (verge) paper. Description: This print originates from: "Tabulae sceleti et musculorum corporis humani", Leyden: 1747. Rare. Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Jan Wandelaar' after 'Bernhard Siegfried Albinus'. Jan Wandelaar (1690-1759) was a Dutch painter, engraver and etcher, born in Amsterdam. His anatomical engravings (for Ruysch' Opera and Albinus Tabulae) are the main base for his renown and highly esteemed. He died in Leyden. Albinus began his studies at age 12, under Boerhaave and Bidloo. He was then instructed by Sebastien Vaillant and Jacob Winslow in Paris, and afterwards wholly devoted himself to anatomy and botany. CRAMER, Johann Andreas.
FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH of the first textbook of assaying. Originally published in 1737 as Elementa artis docimasticae, it was a "profusely illustrated work [which] encompassed the entire art of assaying in two parts, one theoretical and one practical. In the preface he referred to the works of Agricola, Lazarus Ercker, and Stahl. All the instruments and apparatus of contemporary analytical chemistry were depicted and described exactly. In the Elementa, Cramer first described the use of the blowpipe in smelting small amounts of substances and in analyzing them. The sample was heated to glowing over charcoal, and in many cases borax beads were also utilized... In 1738 and 1739 Cramer made a long trip through England to learn more about the subject, and he gave lectures in London" (DSB). Cole 300: "...considered one of the best works of the period on the subject." Partington II, 701-711.
