SPERONTES [Scholze, Johann Sigismund] 1705-1750
Leipzig: auf Kosten der lustigen Gesellschaft, 1741. "Sperontes's most significant work is the Singende Muse an der Pleisse, a collection of poems set as strophic songs to adaptations of the 'newest and best music compositions'... The initial publication of 1736, containing 100 poems (and 68 compositions), proved to be so popular that it was followed by three further sets with 50 numbers each..." "...The music of the Singende Muse consists overwhelmingly of popular pre-existing instrumental and vocal compositions to which Sperontes invented his verses... For the most part Sperontes seems to have drawn on French, but also on English, German and Italian, musical sources. Because the compositions were evidently modified or distorted considerably in their transmission - probably the work of local composers engaged by Sperontes - it has not been possible to identify more than a handful of pieces... 18th-century documents ascribe two pieces to J.S. Bach: 'Ich bin nun, wie ich bin' and 'Dir zu Liebe, wertes Herze' (bwv Anh. 40 and 41)..." "... With their emphasis on modern instrumental dance forms, the lieder of the Singende Muse manifest the direct rhythms, clear phrasing and sectionalism, simple textures and harmonies of the progressive galant style. And, by avoiding the ornate vocal writing of the Italian opera, Sperontes established a precedent for differentiating lied and aria styles..." "... The appearance in print of the first part of the Singende Muse marked the end of the so-called 'Liederlose Zeit' (songless era), the first three decades of … [Click Below for Full Description]

TRABAUD Jean-François
[Click Below for Full Description]

Dark impression; bright full wash colour; printed on heavy paper, Covens & Mortier as a firm existed between 1721-1778, taking over the business of Pierrre Mortier. Johannes / Jean Covens and Cornelius Mortier were brothers- in- law following the former's marriage to Mortier's sister Agatha in 1721, when they also formally went in to partnership. Under the Covens and Mortier imprint, Cornelius and Jean republished the works of the great 17th and early 18th century Dutch and French cartographers De L'Isle, Allard, Jansson, & De Wit. The firm would become one of the most prolific Dutch publishing concerns of the 18th century. The company would pass down through the Covens family as Mortier had no children, changing the name to Covens & Zoon until Pieter Mortier IV a great grandson of the original founder joined the firm and saw the name restored to Mortier Covens & Zoon. ( See Koeman I p45). Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772) was one of the most important and prolific French cartographers of the mid-eighteenth century, in the service of the French Hydr … [Click Below for Full Description]

WATTS, Isaac
1741. First French edition of The Improvement of the Mind; or A Supplement to the Art of Logick. The English original (1741) was praised by Samuel Johnson (Works, xi, 48) but not by Jeremy Bentham, who referred to it as 'old woman's logic' (see Howell, Eighteenth-Century British Logic and Rhetoric, pp. 342, 345). The translator, Daniel de Superville (1696-1773), was a Dutch physician who managed to cure King Frederick II of Prussia of dropsy. In 1742 he founded the University of Erlangen in Germany, and served as chancellor there until 1748, when he returned to the Netherlands. De Superville also wrote several treatises on anatomy. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: 8vo, [ii], xii, [ii], 405, [3] pp., contemporary half leather over speckled boards, rubbed, spine gilt in compartments with morocco label, small library shelf number in early ink on title-page, otherwise internally very clean, a nice copy. COSTER inv. et I. BESSET fecit. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

BETTERTON (Thomas)
London: Printed for E. Curll. 1741 - FIRST EDITION. 8vo, 200 x 118 mms., pp. [iv], 167 [168 blank], [2], 86 ("Memoirs of Mrs. Anne Oldfield"), 24 (adverts for Curll's publications, engraved portrait of Betterton as frontispiece, small engraved portrait of Mrs. Oldfield on title-page of second part, contemporary calf (top and base of spine chipped, front joint slightly cracked, a bit rubbed), a good copy with a library bookplate "North Library" on the front paste down end-paper and the coat of arms embossed in blind on the top part of the first four leaves. The arms are those of the Oldfield family. The work was compiled from the papers of Thomas Betterton (1635 - 1710) by Curll and William Oldys. The present volume includes the separately-published (1741) Memoirs of Mrs. Anne Oldfield. GIven that Betterton died in 1710, his papers could have covered only the first ten or twelve years of Oldfield's career, as she began acting in 1699 and died in 1730. Curll and Oldys seem to have played fast and loose with their documentation: ODNB notes, "The spurious History by William Oldys and others, published by Edmund Curll under Betterton's name in 1741, puts the actor at the battle of Edgehill. Since he was only seven years old at the time, the obvious intent was to link him to the royalist cause." David Roberts: Thomas Betterton: The Greatest Actor of the Restoration Stage (2010). Zeit (berieben u. etwas bestoßen). Erste deutsche Ausgabe. - Bertelli/Innocenti 38; Fromm 28012. - Leicht gebräunt, Rückdeckel u. letzte 4 Bl. mit kurzem Wurmgang. Bath: printed for W. Jones and sold by W. Lobb there; by T. Hinton; S. Brett; J. Creechley, and at the pamphlet-shops of London and Westminster. 1741 [8], vi, [1], 25pp. 8vo. Titlepage with some old faded ink splashes & browning, otherwise a clean copy. Recent quarter calf, marbled boards, red morocco spine label. Additional blank leaves bound at end.ESTC T124400, BL and Kansas only. This is apparently a piracy by Thomas Hinton, in which he offers the translations for the first time. ESTC may be incorrect in ascribing this edition to Edmund Curll. 'In 1741 Thomas Stretser, writing under the pseudonym Roger Pheuquewell, wrote his A New Description of Merryland, in which, employing the vocabulary of geography, biology, and science, he compared female anatomy to a foreign coastline and sex to a journey of discovery. In the same year he also published a detailed attack on and critique of his own work (Merryland Displayed) in which he explained the origin of the idea. He described how, while reading an article about Holland in a new "Geographical Grammar," he was struck by the similarities between the Dutch coastline and the form of female anatomy. 'Ha! said he, the same could be said of a **** as well as of Holland; this whim having once entered his noddle, he resolved to pursue the hint, and try how far he could run the parallel'. The result was a wildly extended joke at the expense of geographers, explorers, and scientists in which the commonplace understandings of mid-eighteenth-century metropolitan men about women's and men' … [Click Below for Full Description]
