[Click Below for Full Description]

ARETIN, Piétro Aretino, dit l';
[Click Below for Full Description]

Roblik, Elias Liborius.
Folio (230 x 324 mm). 2 vols. (3 pts.) in one vol. (14), 513 (but: 517), (1) pp. (4), 307, (1), 427, (1) pp. Both titles printed in red and black. With 6 engr. plates (one letterpress half-title, one double-page-sized plate). Contemp. calf with stamped label to spine. First edition. Most of vol. 1 was printed in Brno as early as 1741. According to Wurzbach, the author "refrained from attacking the Jewish community with the customary polemics". The Moravian priest Roblik (1689-1765) resigned his office so as to dedicate all his efforts to the conversion of Jews. This goal he aimed to achieve by the power of argument and Christian charity alone, attacking the teachings of Judaism only, on individual Jews, as he hoped the "truth" of the Christian doctrines would become apparent once Rabbis and Talmud no longer obscured them. Volume two constitutes a revision (minus the Hebrew quotations) of Eisenmenger's notorious "Entdecktes Judentum" ("Jewry Discovered"), the original edition of which, published in 1700, had only been re-released by censorship. - Binding rather rubbed and bumped at extremeties; damage to spine ends and front hinge. Some browning and waterstaining throughout. Slight paper defects to double-page-sized plate at beginning of vol. 2. Title remargined at top; library stamp of the Budapest Franciscan monastery. Wurzbach XXVI, 212. VD 18, 12746258-001. Not in Fürst.

Roblik, Elias Libor
Brünn, Swoboda, Znaim, Preyß und Königgrätz, Tibelli, 1741. 6 Bl., 513 (recte 517) S., 2 Bl., 307, 427 S. Mit 6 Kupfertafeln (davon eine doppelblattgroß). Fol. (31 x 22 cm). Restauriertes Leder der Zeit mit Rückenschild. Erste Ausgabe. *Wurzbach XXVI, 212. [2 Warenabbildungen bei antiquariat.de]

PALLAS, Peter Simon.
Stafleu & Cowan 7222; Nissen, ZBI 3067. First edition of the Dutch translation of a detailed work on corals and sponges by the German zoologist and botanist Peter Simon Pallas (1741-1811). In this work, originally entitled Elenchus zoophytorum sistensbgenerum adumbrationes generaliores, first published as a part of Pallas's Miscellanea zoologica, Pallas presents an innovative classification of corals and sponges just after they had been transferred from the plant to the animal kingdom. The Dutch naturalist translator Pieter Boddaert (1694-1760) added some of his own observations and made the drawings for the copperplates. In 1766 Pallas published his Miscellanea Zoologica, which included the descriptions of several new vertebrates, which he had discovered in Dutch museum collections. His new system of animal classification was praised by Georges Cuvier and others.Some black spots on the first 15 leaves, not affecting the text, a small marginal water stain near the end and a large stain on pp. 289-304 and 548-560 from a previously inserted document, edges of the plates slightly frayed. Binding rubbed along the extremities, corners bumped. Overall in good condition.

SAVARY DE BRUSLONS, J.
A Paris, Chez la Veuve Estienne et Fils, 1741. With nice head- and tailpieces. 3 volumes. (8), xxvii, (1), 544 pp., (545)-1140 numbered columns; (4) pp., 1772 numbered columns; (4) pp., 1316, 684 numbered columns. Folio. Contemporary marbled calf, spines gilt with raised bands, red labels with gilt lettering, red edges, joints, head and foot of spine and some corners repaired. Kress 4584; Goldsmiths 7819; not in Einaudi; not in INED. Jacques Savary (1622-1690) was for some time director of the French Royal Domains, and later became general business agent to the Duke of Mantua. He had such sound notions about commerce and was so successful in his operations that Colbert appointed him in 1670 in the "Conseil de la Reforme", which was to reform and refine the rules of commercial practice. The "Commercial Code" of 1673 resulting from it was called after him "Code Savary". He was then also pressed to write down and publish all his commercial knowledge, which pressure led to the publication of the famous Le parfait Négociant (1675). It taught everything a merchant should know, but only his left papers revealed to the world the immense and universal knowledge on commerce Savary possessed. The dictionary was immensely successful and covers all aspects of commerce and trade as well as legal and historical matters. Deals among others with: trading cities throughout the world, their manufactures, operation of foreign trade, trading companies (including a short history of the South Sea Company), banking (including an account of John Law's Bank), bookkeeping, etc. etc. The dictionary w … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Oldmixon, John]
London, 1741. Two volumes. xxiv,[2],567,[1]; [2],478pp., plus eight folding maps. Bound to style in speckled calf, gilt, spines gilt, leather labels. Light scattered foxing. Very good. "Second edition, corrected and amended," with the history brought down to the date of publication, and including for the first time the story of William Penn and the Indian princess, as told by Penn to the author. A basic 18th-century reference work on British America. This is the second edition, considerably enlarged and expanded from the first edition of 1708. The first volume is devoted to the North American colonies and includes maps of North America, the islands of Canada, New England, Virginia and Maryland, and Carolina and Bermuda. The second volume covers the British colonies in the West Indies and contains maps of Barbados, Jamaica, and St. Kitts and Antigua. An important contemporary work which probably would have been the first point of reference for any Englishman at the time. Oldmixon's name is signed to the dedication of the first edition only, and Sabin suggests authorship be attributed to Moll, who produced the maps. HOWES O61. SABIN 57157. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 741/164.
