DURELL, Philip.
Paul Fourdrinier Sr. Separate publication London 6th November, 1741. Engraved map, once preserved by being folded to pocket format. Dimensions: widest: 471 by 574mm. A good example of this very rare map. Philip Durell was an important surveyor in the British Royal Navy, a Lieutenant at the time of the War of Jenkins' Ear, but finishing his career as an admiral. Durell served aboard Sir Edward Vernon's fleet during that admiral's campaign against the Spanish in the West Indies and littoral of Spanish South and Central America. As a talented surveyor, and eye-witness to the main battles and sieges of the campaign, Durell's many charts and plans are an important record of these events, and were eagerly published by the leading London cartographic publishing-houses to entertain and inform the domestic market anxious for news of the campaign. This fine plan is of Cumberland Bay on the south coast of Cuba, named in honour of the dedicatee, with regard to what the Spanish possessors might think. It is better known today as Guantanamo Bay, the site of the American base on Cuba. After his failure to capture Cartagena, Vernon landed at 'Cumberland Bay' with the intention of attacking Santiago de Cuba and subduing the whole island. However, it soon became apparent that the plan was doomed to failure, and the British sailed away. Evidently, while based there, Durell carried out the survey, and assigned English names to the landmarks - notably 'Durell's Cove', a particular foible of his - but these names lasted only as long as the British took to sail over the horizon. Of great rarity, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Antique print, untitled. This monumental anatomy plate shows the bones of the back of a male figure, standing in front of a rhinoceros. Wandelaar placed his skeletons and musclemen against lush ornamental backgrounds to give them the illusion of vitality, using contrasts of mass and light to produce a three-dimensional effect. BRONSVELD, Sigisbertus Abrahamsz. van.
Landwehr, VOC 701. Rare first edition of a Tamil translation of the Heidelberg catechism by the reverend Sigisbertus Abrahamsz. van Bronsveld, printed and published in Colombo, Ceylon for the Tamil-speaking Protestant congregation there, for schools and for missionary work. In 1741 the VOC's press in Colombo had printed Willem Konyn's Sinhalese translation of the Heidelberg catechism, but it had received disappointingly little use and Bronsveld hoped his own Tamil translation would meet greater success. The VOC had brought a printing press to Ceylon in 1732 to set up the island's first printing office together with the Dutch Reformed Church, the first book (a Sinhalese prayer book) appearing at Colombo in 1737, followed soon after by religious works in Tamil. A major impetus for setting up the press was the fact that after the Dutch wrested control of much of Ceylon from Portugal with help from the indigenous population in 1640, the Portuguese Catholic priests still retained a great deal of influence and were able to convert some Tamils and Sinhalese. The VOC saw this as a threat to its powerbase and economic position, which centred on the cinnamon trade. They therefore encouraged the Dutch Protestant Church to expand its missionary work, hoping it would curtail the Portuguese Catholic missionary work.With stains from former mildew (treated), mostly in the foot margin of the first few and last few pages. Otherwise in good condition. The binding has been rebacked as noted, but is otherwise good.

OUTHIER (Réginald, abbé);

[Click Below for Full Description]
