Parchment binding with coat of arms of the British military body „Board of Ordnance" gilt stamped as supralibro on front board. [Presumably late 18th century]. 37:25 cm. Parchment binding with gilt stamped supralibro and blind stamped decorative frames, inner boards with laminated, hand made marbled paper in green. Unique parchment binding, probably deriving from the library of the Royal Military Academy founded by the »Board of Ordnance«, a British military body, in 1741. Established in the Tudor period, the Board had its headquarters in the Tower of London, where nowadays its Coat of Arms can still be found on the walls. The primary responsibilities of this body were to act as custodian of the lands, depots and forts required for the defence of the realm and its overseas possessions, and as the supplier of munitions and equipment to both the Army and the Navy. The Board also maintained and directed the Artillery and Engineer corps. By the nineteenth century, the Board of Ordnance was second in size only to Treasury among government departments. Its activities lasted until 1855, at which point (tarnished by poor performance in supplying the Army in Crimea) the organisation was disbanded. [SWITZERLAND - PHARMACOPOEIA].
Blake, p. 350; Neu, Wisconsin 3201; VD18, 10566074. First and only edition, in Latin, of the first official Swiss pharmacopoeia, with a preface by the Swiss anatomist and physiologist Albrecht von Haller in Bern, and an elaborate armorial frontispiece by Johann Georg Sturm. It takes its title almost word for word from the Wittenberg pharmacopoeia, first published in 1741. Although much of the information no doubt comes from that work, it is here presented very differently. The main text is divided into three parts: "Materiam medicam" gives an alphabetical list of medicinal plants and other ingredients, "Medicamenta simplicia et composita" gives instructions for preparing simple and compound medicines, arranged alphabetically by the names of the medicines, and "Syllabus medicamentorum" gives a classified list of the simple and compound medicines. With bookplate on pastedown. Some slight browning or foxing, a few leaves with small dark-brown spots, but otherwise in good condition and with generous margins. The binding is somewhat scuffed, with a small tear in the spine, and the tapes are broken at the inside of the front hinge. An extensive and important pharmacopoeia.

Ed., published in Leiden and Amsterdam in 1765, translated into Dutch from the 1748 first English ed. by Richard Walter. (A voyage round the world . by George Anson .) Great Britain was at war with Spain in 1740. Admiral of the Fleet George Anson, 1st Baron Anson PC, FRS, RN (1697 -1762) was a British admiral and a wealthy aristocrat, noted for his circumnavigation of the globe and his role overseeing the Royal Navy during the Seven Years' War. Anson commanded the small British squadron sent at the beginning of the war with Spain to harass the Spaniards on the west coast of South America and cut off their supplies of wealth from the Pacific. Disasters and hardships plagued the expedition; most of the ships were lost around Cape Horn, and on the Chilean coast, and of a crew of 960, less than 350 survived. Eventually the Centurion alone was left, but Anson persevered and succeeded in capturing a gold-laden Spanish galleon near Manila. The prize he earned as a result settled his fortune for life. This is the official account of his voyage of circumnavigation, compiled from Anson's journals by Richard Walter, chaplain on board the Centurion … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gabriel DOPPELMAIER (1677-1750)
1741. Mappa lunare secondo Johannes Hevelius (sinistra) e Giovanni Battista Riccioli (destra). Questa incisione venne stampata per la prima volta nel Neuer Atlas di Homann (1707) e ristampata nel suo Atlas von hundert Charter (1712), nonché nel Grossen Atlas (1716). Striking pair of maps depicting the surface of the moon, based upon the models of Johannes Hevelius and Giovanni Battista Riccioli. The two spheres of the moon provide a comparative analysis of the topographical information and nomenclature of Riccioli and Hevelius. Between the two spheres is a model showing the phases of the moon, with the different lunar phases represented in the four corners of the image. The map is further embellished with cherubs using a telescope and Diana, the lady of the moon. In 1647 Johannes Hevelius, a brewer from Gdansk, published his Selenographia, the first treatise devoted entirely to the moon. The work included for only the second time a single map that showed all the features of the moon equally clearly--a composite view that pictured the Moon in a way it never appeared in reality, but was accurate in its placement of individual features. Hevelius was truly a remarkable man of science, who made his own lenses, constructed his own telescopes, observed the Moon on every clear night for several years, drew his observations, engraved them himself, and had the wealth to publish a sumptuous book at his own expense. In Selenographia , Hevelius presented graphical depictions of every conceivable phase of the Moon, as well as three large plates of the full Moon: the first showing the way … [Click Below for Full Description]
