[SWITZERLAND - PHARMACOPOEIA].
Blake, p. 350; Neu, Wisconsin 3201; VD18, 10566074. First and only edition, in Latin, of the first official Swiss pharmacopoeia, with a preface by the Swiss anatomist and physiologist Albrecht von Haller in Bern, and an elaborate armorial frontispiece by Johann Georg Sturm. It takes its title almost word for word from the Wittenberg pharmacopoeia, first published in 1741. Although much of the information no doubt comes from that work, it is here presented very differently. The main text is divided into three parts: "Materiam medicam" gives an alphabetical list of medicinal plants and other ingredients, "Medicamenta simplicia et composita" gives instructions for preparing simple and compound medicines, arranged alphabetically by the names of the medicines, and "Syllabus medicamentorum" gives a classified list of the simple and compound medicines. With bookplate on pastedown. Some slight browning or foxing, a few leaves with small dark-brown spots, but otherwise in good condition and with generous margins. The binding is somewhat scuffed, with a small tear in the spine, and the tapes are broken at the inside of the front hinge. An extensive and important pharmacopoeia.

He both etched and engraved in line-manner. He engraved a number of plates after Francois Boucher, some after C. N. Cochin, and a set of emblematical figures of the sciences in conjunction with Cochin and Tardieu. He was employed in engraving small plates for book illustration, and more especially on plates for the Transactions of the Academie des Sciences. He was an engraver of great merit. Ed., published in Leiden and Amsterdam in 1765, translated into Dutch from the 1748 first English ed. by Richard Walter. (A voyage round the world . by George Anson .) Great Britain was at war with Spain in 1740. Admiral of the Fleet George Anson, 1st Baron Anson PC, FRS, RN (1697 -1762) was a British admiral and a wealthy aristocrat, noted for his circumnavigation of the globe and his role overseeing the Royal Navy during the Seven Years' War. Anson commanded the small British squadron sent at the beginning of the war with Spain to harass the Spaniards on the west coast of South America and cut off their supplies of wealth from the Pacific. Disasters and hardships plagued the expedition; most of the ships were lost around Cape Horn, and on the Chilean coast, and of a crew of 960, less than 350 survived. Eventually the Centurion alone was left, but Anson persevered and succeeded in capturing a gold-laden Spanish galleon near Manila. The prize he earned as a result settled his fortune for life. This is the official account of his voyage of circumnavigation, compiled from Anson's journals by Richard Walter, chaplain on board the Centurion … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gabriel DOPPELMAIER (1677-1750)
1741. Mappa lunare secondo Johannes Hevelius (sinistra) e Giovanni Battista Riccioli (destra). Questa incisione venne stampata per la prima volta nel Neuer Atlas di Homann (1707) e ristampata nel suo Atlas von hundert Charter (1712), nonché nel Grossen Atlas (1716). Striking pair of maps depicting the surface of the moon, based upon the models of Johannes Hevelius and Giovanni Battista Riccioli. The two spheres of the moon provide a comparative analysis of the topographical information and nomenclature of Riccioli and Hevelius. Between the two spheres is a model showing the phases of the moon, with the different lunar phases represented in the four corners of the image. The map is further embellished with cherubs using a telescope and Diana, the lady of the moon. In 1647 Johannes Hevelius, a brewer from Gdansk, published his Selenographia, the first treatise devoted entirely to the moon. The work included for only the second time a single map that showed all the features of the moon equally clearly--a composite view that pictured the Moon in a way it never appeared in reality, but was accurate in its placement of individual features. Hevelius was truly a remarkable man of science, who made his own lenses, constructed his own telescopes, observed the Moon on every clear night for several years, drew his observations, engraved them himself, and had the wealth to publish a sumptuous book at his own expense. In Selenographia , Hevelius presented graphical depictions of every conceivable phase of the Moon, as well as three large plates of the full Moon: the first showing the way … [Click Below for Full Description]

BUCK, Samuel (1696-1779) and Nathaniel BUCK (fl. 1724-1759 ).
1741 1741 - 17 ¾ x 33 ¾ in (45.1 x 85.73 cm). Copperplate engraving, titled on upper edge, annotated with description on lower edge and key on lower right (light browning, light crease down the middle, fading consistent with age). A RARE WINDOW INTO GLORIOUS PRE-INDUSTRIAL ENGLAND. This copperplate panorama presents one of the earliest topographical views of Britain, and provides a rare visual record of the historic town of Yarmouth before the upheavals of the Industrial Revolution. The annotated key on the lower right guides the viewer through many of the principal features of this seaside town. The inscription at the lower edge offers meticulous notes on the town’s history and local society. The work opens onto vibrant and lively scenes. In the foreground, townsfolk from different walks of life lounge and mingle. The middle of the composition shows ships and boats sailing along a ribbon of water. In the background is a stretch of buildings and churches rendered with extraordinary depth and clarity. Spread throughout the view are intricately rendered human figures who can be seen along the bowling green, the quay, the water, and the road. There is a wealth of detail here for the eyes to feast on. Samuel and Nathaniel Buck were brothers born in Yorkshire, England at around the turn of the 18th century. They published engravings of 428 views of the ruins of all notable abbeys and castles in Britain, along with four views of seats and 83 large general views of the chief cities and towns of England and Wales. DURELL, Philip.
Paul Fourdrinier Sr. Separate publication London 6th November, 1741. Engraved map, once preserved by being folded to pocket format. Dimensions: widest: 471 by 574mm. A good example of this very rare map. Philip Durell was an important surveyor in the British Royal Navy, a Lieutenant at the time of the War of Jenkins' Ear, but finishing his career as an admiral. Durell served aboard Sir Edward Vernon's fleet during that admiral's campaign against the Spanish in the West Indies and littoral of Spanish South and Central America. As a talented surveyor, and eye-witness to the main battles and sieges of the campaign, Durell's many charts and plans are an important record of these events, and were eagerly published by the leading London cartographic publishing-houses to entertain and inform the domestic market anxious for news of the campaign. This fine plan is of Cumberland Bay on the south coast of Cuba, named in honour of the dedicatee, with regard to what the Spanish possessors might think. It is better known today as Guantanamo Bay, the site of the American base on Cuba. After his failure to capture Cartagena, Vernon landed at 'Cumberland Bay' with the intention of attacking Santiago de Cuba and subduing the whole island. However, it soon became apparent that the plan was doomed to failure, and the British sailed away. Evidently, while based there, Durell carried out the survey, and assigned English names to the landmarks - notably 'Durell's Cove', a particular foible of his - but these names lasted only as long as the British took to sail over the horizon. Of great rarity, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Antique print, untitled. This monumental anatomy plate shows the bones of the back of a male figure, standing in front of a rhinoceros. Wandelaar placed his skeletons and musclemen against lush ornamental backgrounds to give them the illusion of vitality, using contrasts of mass and light to produce a three-dimensional effect. BRONSVELD, Sigisbertus Abrahamsz. van.
Landwehr, VOC 701. Rare first edition of a Tamil translation of the Heidelberg catechism by the reverend Sigisbertus Abrahamsz. van Bronsveld, printed and published in Colombo, Ceylon for the Tamil-speaking Protestant congregation there, for schools and for missionary work. In 1741 the VOC's press in Colombo had printed Willem Konyn's Sinhalese translation of the Heidelberg catechism, but it had received disappointingly little use and Bronsveld hoped his own Tamil translation would meet greater success. The VOC had brought a printing press to Ceylon in 1732 to set up the island's first printing office together with the Dutch Reformed Church, the first book (a Sinhalese prayer book) appearing at Colombo in 1737, followed soon after by religious works in Tamil. A major impetus for setting up the press was the fact that after the Dutch wrested control of much of Ceylon from Portugal with help from the indigenous population in 1640, the Portuguese Catholic priests still retained a great deal of influence and were able to convert some Tamils and Sinhalese. The VOC saw this as a threat to its powerbase and economic position, which centred on the cinnamon trade. They therefore encouraged the Dutch Protestant Church to expand its missionary work, hoping it would curtail the Portuguese Catholic missionary work. With stains from former mildew (treated), mostly in the foot margin of the first few and last few pages. Otherwise in good condition. The binding has been rebacked as noted, but is otherwise good.
