FERDINAND EMPEREUR, AUTRICHE
First Edition. Uncommon, 2 copies of the BN France, nothing in the UK, a copy in Berlin. Sheet. Since the sixteenth century, there had always been a man to head of the house of Austria, and the estate had passed from male to male. But the Emperor Charles VI had only daughters. He wanted to leave his inheritance to his eldest daughter, Maria Theresa, and his estate settled by a solemn law, called Pragmatic Sanction. The book is a careful examination of the will of the Emperor Ferdinand I, against the estate of the house of Austria. The book argues, in support of numerous extracts of the will, it can be no other than his eldest daughter female heirs, if it turns out that the male offspring was extinguished. The book was certainly written to ease tensions and bring justice to the will of Charles VI, yet it does not prevent the many conflicts which followed its decision and flared Europe. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.
(Caillet, 3475. Cohen, 341. Dorbon, 1431. Dinaux, 'Sociétés badines', I, 336. Oberlé, 'Bibliothèque Bachique', 543). Quelques auréoles au fond. Joli exemplaire, frais, très grand de marges, imprimé sur vergé, bien relié.

Artist: Homann Erben (d) ; issued in: Nuremberg; date: (d)1741 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: colored; - condition: Lower margin perfectly restored; - size (in cm): 51 x 57; - description: Map shows total France with a beautiful cartouche; - vita of the artist: Johann Babtiste Homann (1664-1724) was born in Oberkammlach, the Electorate of Bavaria. Although educated at a Jesuit school, and preparing for an ecclesiastical career, he eventually converted to Protestantism and from 1687 worked as a civil law notary in Nuremberg. He soon turned to engraving and cartography; in 1702 he founded his own publishing house.Homann acquired renown as a leading German cartographer, and in 1715 was appointed Imperial Geographer by Emperor Charles VI. Giving such privileges to individuals was an added right that the Holy Roman Emperor enjoyed. In the same year he was also named a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Of particular significance to cartography were the imperial printing privileges (Latin: privilegia impressoria). These protected for a time the authors in all scientific fields such as printers, copper engravers, map makers and publishers. They were also very important as a recommendation for potential customers. In 1716 Homann published his masterpiece Grosser Atlas ueber die ganze Welt (Grand Atlas of all the World). Numerous maps were drawn up in cooperation with the engraver Christoph Weigel the Elder, who also published Siebmachers Wappenbuch.Homann died in Nuremberg. He was succeeded by the Homann heirs company, which was in business until 1848. The … [Click Below for Full Description]

Clairaut, Alexis Claude de WITH Pierre Louis de Maupertuis
Pierre Mortier, Amsterdam, 1741. FIRST AMSTERDAM PRINTINGS OF 2 IMPORTANT PAPERS: CLAIRAUT ON STELLAR ABERRATION, THE FIRST DIRECT CONFIRMATION OF THE COPERNICAN THEORY with MAUPERTUIS & HIS OFFICIAL REPORT ON THE LAPLAND EXPEDITION TO MEASURE THE SHAPE OF THE EARTH. THE TRIPS CONFIRMED NEWTON'S DYNAMIC & SUPPORTED THE OBLATE SHAPE. 23 plates. Note that we offer the original, first Paris printing as well. Both the French astronomer Alexis Claude de Clairaut and the French mathematician Pierre Louis de Maupertuis were involved in 18th century efforts to determine the shape of the earth; both published their findings in the this volume. To many controversy over the shape of the earth seemed a test between differing systems of natural philosophy - Cartesian and Newtonian. Though Newton and Huygens were working from differing theories of gravity, each calculated Earth to be slightly flattered at the poles. Writing in Principia, "Newton had calculated from the Earth's rotational force at the Equator that its equatorial diameter should exceed its polar diameter by 0.44 per cent, or 27 km" (Hall "Revolution, 351). French astronomers, Cassini II among them, came to the opposite conclusion; with Cartesians, they believed the polar diameter of the Earth was the greater. The Cartesian argument stood for fifteen years until the French Royal Academy of Sciences questioned the reliability of using only local measurements to settle the matter. To resolve the debate, Anders Celcius proposed an expedition to prove that the Earth flattens at the poles as predicted by Newton. In 1736, the Aca … [Click Below for Full Description]

Clairaut, Alexis Claude de WITH Pierre Louis de Maupertuis
Amsterdam: Pierre Mortier, 1741 FIRST AMSTERDAM PRINTINGS OF 2 IMPORTANT PAPERS: CLAIRAUT ON STELLAR ABERRATION, THE FIRST DIRECT CONFIRMATION OF THE COPERNICAN THEORY with MAUPERTUIS & HIS OFFICIAL REPORT ON THE LAPLAND EXPEDITION TO MEASURE THE SHAPE OF THE EARTH. In 1736, the … [Click Below for Full Description]

When Augustus died, the commemorative account of his achievements (Res Gestae) prominently featured the geographical cataloguing of peoples and places within the Empire. Geography, the census, and the meticulous keeping of written records were central concerns of Roman Imperial administration.; - vita of the artist: Johann Babtiste Homann (1664-1724), Nuremberg, was born in Oberkammlach, the Electorate of Bavaria. Although educated at a Jesuit school, and preparing for an ecclesiastical career, he eventually converted to Protestantism and from 1687 worked as a civil law notary in Nuremberg.
