Tailfer, Patrick
Charles-town, S.C.: Printed by P. Timothy...and sold by J.[?] Crokatt..., 1741. xvi,112pp. Modern three quarter calf and marbled boards in contemporary style. Bottom margin trimmed, affecting imprint and several catchwords but no main text, else about fine. The second edition (or third, according to De Renne), with a variation of the Charles-town imprint, an undated titlepage, and a different collation than what is generally considered the second edition. Howes and Sabin both suggest that this is probably a London imprint, and Church does not list this issue. The pamphlet constitutes a forceful critique of Gen. James Oglethorpe and the Georgia government. The author demands the removal of prohibitions on Negro slavery and the importation of liquor, and the establishment of private land ownership. Tailfer was the leader of an outspoken group of malcontents in Savannah, who were driven out of the colony by Oglethorpe in September of 1740 and who took refuge in Charleston. "The most interesting of all books about Georgia in the colonial period, for attack is almost always more interesting than praise...The work is a masterpiece of invective and one of the cornerstones of the historical literature of Georgia" - Streeter. HOWES T6, "b." DE RENNE, pp.96-97. CHURCH 940 (ref). CLARK I:161. VAIL 415. SABIN 94217. STREETER SALE 1147 (ref).

FERDINAND EMPEREUR, AUTRICHE
First Edition. Uncommon, 2 copies of the BN France, nothing in the UK, a copy in Berlin. Sheet. Since the sixteenth century, there had always been a man to head of the house of Austria, and the estate had passed from male to male. But the Emperor Charles VI had only daughters. He wanted to leave his inheritance to his eldest daughter, Maria Theresa, and his estate settled by a solemn law, called Pragmatic Sanction. The book is a careful examination of the will of the Emperor Ferdinand I, against the estate of the house of Austria. The book argues, in support of numerous extracts of the will, it can be no other than his eldest daughter female heirs, if it turns out that the male offspring was extinguished. The book was certainly written to ease tensions and bring justice to the will of Charles VI, yet it does not prevent the many conflicts which followed its decision and flared Europe. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.
(Caillet, 3475. Cohen, 341. Dorbon, 1431. Dinaux, 'Sociétés badines', I, 336. Oberlé, 'Bibliothèque Bachique', 543). Quelques auréoles au fond. Joli exemplaire, frais, très grand de marges, imprimé sur vergé, bien relié.

Artist: Homann Erben (d) ; issued in: Nuremberg; date: (d)1741 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: colored; - condition: Lower margin perfectly restored; - size (in cm): 51 x 57; - description: Map shows total France with a beautiful cartouche; - vita of the artist: Johann Babtiste Homann (1664-1724) was born in Oberkammlach, the Electorate of Bavaria. Although educated at a Jesuit school, and preparing for an ecclesiastical career, he eventually converted to Protestantism and from 1687 worked as a civil law notary in Nuremberg. He soon turned to engraving and cartography; in 1702 he founded his own publishing house.Homann acquired renown as a leading German cartographer, and in 1715 was appointed Imperial Geographer by Emperor Charles VI. Giving such privileges to individuals was an added right that the Holy Roman Emperor enjoyed. In the same year he was also named a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Of particular significance to cartography were the imperial printing privileges (Latin: privilegia impressoria). These protected for a time the authors in all scientific fields such as printers, copper engravers, map makers and publishers. They were also very important as a recommendation for potential customers. In 1716 Homann published his masterpiece Grosser Atlas ueber die ganze Welt (Grand Atlas of all the World). Numerous maps were drawn up in cooperation with the engraver Christoph Weigel the Elder, who also published Siebmachers Wappenbuch.Homann died in Nuremberg. He was succeeded by the Homann heirs company, which was in business until 1848. The … [Click Below for Full Description]
