Parsons, James
London: Printed for J. Walthoe, over-against the Royal-Exchange in Cornhill, 1741. liv, 156p., three engraved plates, one of them a fold-out illustration backed with linen; first edition octavo, bound in later roan boards with red title label on spine, a very good copy with some rubbing to the extremities, some soiling to the preliminaries. Parsons, an obstetrician and Fellow of the Royal Society, delves into the physical characteristics of hermaphrodites as well as the social and religious questions they posed. Adopts a clinical stance, lamenting a history of discrimination. In the introduction Parsons asks, "What, but ignorance or superstition, could perswade men to imagine, that poor human creatures (which were only distorted in some particular part, or had any thing unusual appearing about them, from some morbid cause affecting them, either in the uterus, or after their births) were prodigies or monsters in nature? What, but ignorance or superstition, could urge men to make laws for their destruction or exclusion from the common benefits of life?" Includes discussions of past laws and customs since Roman times regarding hermaphrodites.

Minor marginal soiling to first few and last few leaves, including frontispiece and title page. A handsome, Near Fine example of this lovely book. George Bickham. Tall folio (10-1/4" x 16") bound in 19th-century full black morocco leather with gilt floral decorations in the corners and on the spine, raised bands, gilt-lettered red and green morocco spine labels. Complete with an engraved frontispiece by Hubert Gravelot, two engraved title pages, and 212 fine plates of artistic and ornamental calligraphy, many of which contain vignettes, all fully engraved. This work includes specimens by 25 different writing masters--all engraved by Bickham. First issued to subscribers in 52 parts between 1733 and 1741, this title was heavily used by its owners, making complete copies in fine condition very scarce. George Bickham the Elder (1684-1758) was the finest calligraphic engraver of his day. He was also an excellent penman, as 18 of these plates show, but he employed 25 leading writing masters to compose the bulk of this, his best known work, a collection of writing exemplars which helped to popularize the English Round Hand script in the 18th century.

Leipzig, [Breitkopf] auf Kosten der lustigen Gesellschafft, 1741. 8vo. Engraved title, double-page engraved additional title (a view of Leipzig), (102) pp. with engraved notes in the text. Contemporary half vellum in modern half cloth box. Includes the facsimile reprint of the first edition, bound in half vellum (Leipzig 1964). Third edition, largely agreeing with the 1737 first: an important source for the history of song writing in the first half of the 18th century, influential for Viennese classicism and one of the first music editions by Breitkopf & Härtel. "Its engraved titles, imprinted notes and numerous charming woodcut vignettes make this one of the age's most delightful creations of book art" (cf. Mannheimer cat. 5, 1398 - this edition). Includes the frequently lacking frontispiece showing the double-page view of Leipzig. Two sequel volumes appeared in 1742-45. The author, who published all his works under his pseudonym "Sperontes", could by identified as J. S. Scholze (1705-50) only in 1885 by the musicologist and biographer of Bach, Philipp Spitta. - Binding rubbed with tiny flaws to covers; corners bumped. Margins slightly browned. This is the voucher copy from the library of the publishers Breitkopf & Härtel (their stamp on the title page); front pastedown has bookplate of the Leipzig publisher Oskar von Hase, who was trained at Breitkopf & Härtel and served as chairman of the Society of German Music Sellers from 1875 to 1901; later stamp of the musicologist Dr. Werner Danckert. ( Caillet, 3475. Cohen, 341. Charles Darwin regarded his work as a central influence on the theory of evolution. The diverse directions in which these writers took what they gleaned from reading him reflect both the richness...and wide range of his empiricism" (Stanford). Essays, Moral and Political was Hume's first great success.
