CAYLUS
[Click Below for Full Description]

Up for sale here is a phenomenal partial set of "Oeuvres de Madame de Ville-Mieu" published in Paris in 1741 by Clouzier. Eight volumes of original twelve volume set, missing volumes 1-2 and 11-12. Phenomenally maintained leather. Some light chipping to a few hinges and rounding to edges, but these books do not show their nearly 280 years of age. Gorgeous gilded crest on cover and spinal graphics still display fantastically. Pages are vibrant. Title pages beautiful. Interesting provenance on the set based on the bookplate of a Baron d'Heiss, a major player in the literary world of 18th century France, a prominent citizen and major early bibliophile who at one time boasted a collection of nearly 4,000 volumes, incredible in its day. More about the Baron can be learned about at the following link: http://histoire-bibliophilie.blogspot.com/2016/06/qui-etait-le-baron-dheiss.html Excellent, scarce set that would become a centerpiece in any pre-American library. Phenomenal volumes and a worthy addition for anyone's collection with incredibly important provenance for any true bibliophile. Please email with any questions, all offers happily considered! Tarih-i-Rasid. Istanbul: Ibrahim Müteferrika 1741 [1153 AH]. Ottoman Turkish. Complete in three volumes (bound in two), plus the separate continuation work, Tarih-i-Çelebizade, bound at the end. The bindings bear the tughra of Sultan Mahmud II. Müteferrika was the first Muslim to run a printing press using movable Arabic type, publishing a total of 17 works between 1729 and 1742. After his death, printing in the Islamic world remained sparse until the end of the century. Due to this, and their rarity, these books are often described as Islamic incunables. 500 copies are estimated to have been produced of each of these volumes. The authors, Mehmed Rashid and Çelebizade Ismail Asim, were court historians of the Ottoman Empire, and their works cover the period 1660-1730. Externally worn, scuffed and chipped, spine leather cracking, one of the flaps is detached with much loss to fold/hinge. Titles written in Arabic on bottom edge of textblocks. Library bookplate inside front cover of each volume, some annotations to endpapers and paste-downs, no other markings. The majority of the leaves are crisp and clean, but significant sections are affected by marginal dampstain, ranging from faint to very noticeable (as pictured). A handful of leaves are affected by some other ugly stains (as pictured). There are a few tears (a couple reaching into text without loss), and a couple of leaves have edge-repairs. One leaf has had a large tear into the text repaired (pictured), with some letters obscured by the repairs. There is some yellowing and rippling in places; there is occasional foxing … [Click Below for Full Description]

BACHSTROM (Jean Frederic)
A Amsterdam Chez Zacharie Chatelain, 1741. FIRST EDITION. 12mo, 157 x 91 mms.,pp. [vi], 70, including half-title, engraved frontispiece, title-page in red and black, contemporary mottled sheepskin, spine ornately gilt in compartments; front free marbled end-paper missing, top and base of spine chipped, but a very good and attractive copy. The earliest book on swimming published in Europe is probably that by Melchisedech Thevenot, L'Art de Nager, demontré par figures, avec des avis pour se baigner utilement, published in 1696; curiously the next French edition did not appear until 1769, but the volume was translated into English in 1699. Jan Fryderyk or Johann Friedrich Bachstrom (1688 - 1742) invented a life jacket made largely of cork for use by sailors at sea, and the book is more about that invention than swimming. One of the earliest appearances of swimming in English literature in English literature is in Thomas Shadwell's The Virtuoso (1676), where the "virtuoso," Sir Nicholas Gimcrack learns the theory of swimming, by, as I recall, lying on a table and imitating a frog. Sixteenth century writers such as Thomas Elyot and Richard Mulcaster were early advocates in England of the virtues of swimming. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

CANALETTO, Antonio
Venice, 1741. The Prato First states. 2 etched plates, (each image size: 300 by 430mm) each with Remondini watermark. Canaletto turned to engraving at the height of his career, when he had received numerous commissions from the likes of Stefano Conti of Lucca, Owen McSwiney - for several English gentlemen - and most notably, by his greatest patron, the collector and Consul of Venice, Joseph Smith. This expansive view of Santa Giustina in prà della Valle, Padua, is from Canaletto's "Vedute, altre prese da i Luoghi altre ideate da Antonio Canal.", the artist's sole etched work: "views, some taken from nature, some invented, by Antonio Canal, and by him set in perspective, engraved and dedicated to the most illustrious Joseph Smith, Consul of His Britannic Majesty to the Most Serene Venetian Republic, as a sign of homage and esteem." The present pair of etchings combine to make a magnificent view of the domes of the basilica of Santa Giustina, presiding over the immense square in Padua known as the Prato. They are both printed on paper bearing the Remondini watermark, and as such are particularly rare and only known one or two examples. Antonio Canal, detto il Canaletto (1697-1768) dedicated the "Vedute" to the consul of Venice Joseph Smith, who may well have commissioned the work. As Bromberg observes, etching was extraordinarily well suited to Canaletto's painterly style, and the pains he bestowed on the plates is evident from his frequent use of re-biting. Whereas his paintings characteristically portrayed the grand buildings of Venice, in the etchings Canaletto expressed h … [Click Below for Full Description]

Oldmixon, John]
London, 1741. Two volumes. xxxiv,[2],567,[1]; [2],478pp., plus eight folding maps. Contemporary calf, rebacked, with original spine labels laid down. Minor rubbing. Two bookplates in each volume, moderate scattered foxing, expertly-repaired tears to two maps. Very good. "Second edition, corrected and amended," with the history brought down to the date of publication, and including for the first time the story of William Penn and the Indian princess, as told by Penn to the author. A basic 18th-century reference work on British America. This is the second edition, considerably enlarged and expanded from the first edition of 1708. The first volume is devoted to the North American colonies and includes maps of North America, the islands of Canada, New England, Virginia and Maryland, and Carolina and Bermuda. The second volume covers the British colonies in the West Indies and contains maps of Barbados, Jamaica, and St. Kitts and Antigua. An important contemporary work which probably would have been the first point of reference for any Englishman at the time. Oldmixon's name is signed to the dedication of the first edition only, and Sabin suggests authorship be attributed to Moll, who produced the maps. HOWES O61. SABIN 57157. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 741/164. MASCRIER, BANIER
PARIS: ROLLIN FILS, 1741. CEREMONIES AND RELIGIOUS CUSTOMS OF THE VARIOUS NATIONS OF THE KNOWN WORLD by The abbots Mgr Le MASCRIER and Mgr BANIER 7 volumes Second edition of this monumental history of the Ceremonies and religious customs of the various nations of the known world, with historical and explanations by the abbots M. L'Abbée BANIER and M. L'Abbée Le MASCRIER. The book was initially published in Amsterdam in 1723. It has been entirely revised, reworked and expanded with new historical essays of M. L'Abbée Le MASCRIER in this present edition. Published by Jean Frédéric BERNARD, a French language bookseller in Amsterdam, it had been lavishly illustrated by Bernard PICART, one of the most famous engravers of the time. As the title suggests, they sought to describe the ritual and ceremonial life of all the known religions of the world. Because Bernard chose to remain anonymous as author, the work has long been catalogued under the name of its engraver, Picart. "Picart," as many readers called it, helped create the study of comparative religion and had a long-lasting influence on the representations of the world's religions in the West. Nearly half of volume 3 is devoted to the Native Americans. Highly sought after for the richness and quality of Bernard Picart's illustrations, the book, full in 7 volumes in-folio (395 X 270 mm), full contemporary tobacco marbled calf, gilt-paneled spines in 8 compartments, labels in 2, and a three golden net on the cover. The 7 volumes contains all titles pages printed in red and black, engraved fronstispices, initials, 227 plates re … [Click Below for Full Description]
