Tampon Rembr … [Click Below for Full Description]

ANDRY, Nicolas.
Chez la veuve Alix; Lambert & Durand, Paris. Rare first edition, and a very fine copy, of the "first book on orthopedics" (Garrison-Morton). A work "of supreme importance" (Bick).?Grolier, One Hundred Books Famous in Medicine 42; Lilly, Notable Medical Books 113; Norman 55; Heirs of Hippocrates 697; Garrison-Morton 4301."Nicholas Andry coined the word ‘orthopaedics’ in French as orthopédie, derived from the Greek words orthos (‘correct’, ‘straight’) and paidion (‘child’), when he published Orthopedie (translated as Orthopaedia: or the Art of Correcting and Preventing Deformities in Children) in 1741. Though as the name implies it was initially developed with attention to children, the correction of spinal and bony deformities in all stages of life eventually became the cornerstone of orthopedic practice." (Wikipedia). Andry’s "book was the first monograph on the subject, and the emblematic engraving it contains of a tree with a crooked trunk tied to a straight post has been adopted as a symbol of orthopedics."Andry grasped the crucial principles that the muscles in balance are the molders of thebody in childhood and that weakness in a muscle, resulting in a muscle imbalance, canresult in the onset of a deformity during growth. He therefore recommended that the offending muscle be subjected to a course of exercise, by which deformities could be prevented or cured. His methods were simple but ingenious, based on observation and onthe principle that deformities that are due to one form of movement or habit can be undone by a movement or habit of the opposite kind. For example, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Parsons, James
London: Printed for J. Walthoe, over-against the Royal-Exchange in Cornhill, 1741. liv, 156p., three engraved plates, one of them a fold-out illustration backed with linen; first edition octavo, bound in later roan boards with red title label on spine, a very good copy with some rubbing to the extremities, some soiling to the preliminaries. Parsons, an obstetrician and Fellow of the Royal Society, delves into the physical characteristics of hermaphrodites as well as the social and religious questions they posed. Adopts a clinical stance, lamenting a history of discrimination. In the introduction Parsons asks, "What, but ignorance or superstition, could perswade men to imagine, that poor human creatures (which were only distorted in some particular part, or had any thing unusual appearing about them, from some morbid cause affecting them, either in the uterus, or after their births) were prodigies or monsters in nature? What, but ignorance or superstition, could urge men to make laws for their destruction or exclusion from the common benefits of life?" Includes discussions of past laws and customs since Roman times regarding hermaphrodites.

Paris: Chereau et Joubert, 1741. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Large Folio. Large folio (513 x 330 mm). Engraved title, two leaves of engraved explanatory text, and 14 engraved plates of anatomical illustrations by Huquier after Bouchardon, numbered 2 to 15. Contemporary blue papercard boards (rubbed, extremities worn, spine and joints chipped). Internally little browned only, light marginal soiling, occasional minor spotting, few leaves with faint dampstain to upper corner. Provenance: Dr. Maurice Villaret (bookplate to front pastedown). Very good copy. ---- Choulant-Frank, p.275; Waller 1346. FIRST EDITION, VERY RARE. Edme Bouchardon (1698-1762) was a French artist and sculptor to King Louis XV. Entrusted with royal commissions, he created some of the most iconic images of his time. His works were praised and sought after by distinguished art collectors of his time throughout Europe. In 2017, the J. Paul Getty Museum in collaboration with the Musée de Louvre dedicated him an exhibition in Los Angeles. Bouchardon worked a good deal with Gabriel Huquier, who in 1737 began engraving several series of prints after his drawings. de la manière extraordinaire dont ils sont gouvernés ; des moeurs & coûtumes singulières des habitans, & autres particularités très-intéressantes.

- Bertelli/Innocenti 38; Fromm 28012. - Leicht gebräunt, Rückdeckel u. letzte 4 Bl. mit kurzem Wurmgang.
