Nicolai Klimii Iter Subterraneum novam telluris theoriam?

Jacob Preuss,, Copenhagen and Leipzig 1741 - First edition. The Subterranean Voyage of Nicolas Klim is one of the classics of speculative and utopian fiction, written fifteen years after Swift's Gulliver's Travels and often compared favourably with that work. It is the first fully developed novel to be set in the earth's interior, a setting which has been utilised countless times in later science fiction. Klim, a poor student, falls through a hole in the earth just outside the Norwegian town of Bergen and finds himself on the inside of the earth's crust. He lands on the planet Nazar (which orbits a sun at the centre of the earth's cavity) where he finds a nation that lives according to the laws of reason and nature. The peasantry are considered very highly and therefore are the most distinguished class in the state; many of the highest offices are held by women, who are in every way equal to the men. Nazar presents an enlightened utopia, very much in the mould of the ideals of Montesquieu and Voltaire (who Holberg admired enormously) but Klim also travels to other states where the perfect state of society is not so fully developed or is perhaps degenerate, allowing a vivid comparison of political, social and philosophical systems.Holberg (like his hero Klim) was a native of Bergen at a time when Norway and Denmark existed as a twin kingdom. He saw himself as a fully European writer and the equal of the French philosophes. The majority of his works, including the present, first appeared in Latin, the universal language. The adventures of Nicolas Klim were immediately popular and were rapidly translated into all the major European languages. 8vo (168 × 96 m), pp. [ii] 388 with engraved frontispiece, folding map and 2 plates. Fine French eighteenth-century olive morocco gilt. Upper joint just starting, but unobtrusive. Neat inscription to upper forecorner of front free endpaper ?Coll. perf. H. Drury. Harrow. 1822.? Modern bookplates of A.L. McLaughlin and Bent Juel-Jensen. An excellent copy of a work rarely found in such attractive condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Halle. 1741-1752.. Nine volumes in all, with the Tomo Chachi Mico plate appearing as the frontispiece in the first. First volume (thick quarto) in contemporary three-quarter speckled vellum and boards, seven volumes in later plain wrappers, and one volume in modern brown cloth. Tomo Chachi Mico plate in first volume trimmed close, worn on edges. Uniformly internally clean. Very good. The first volume lacks the two maps. A virtually complete collection of these vital sources for the early history of Georgia. The 1741 collected edition (after the originals issued separately in parts beginning in 1735) of the first six parts of these important annual accounts of the Salzburger settlements in Georgia, commonly known as "the Salzburger Tracts," here accompanied by six additional continuations and two partial anthologies. These settlements began when a group of German settlers from Salzburg, fleeing religious persecution at home, accepted the invitation of Gen. James Oglethorpe, the founder of Georgia, to settle there in 1734. By 1741 some twelve hundred Salzburgers were living in Georgia, and these volumes are both a history and a promotional work for further settlement. Included in the first (and most important) volume is the original relation, AUSFUHRLICHE NACHRICHT, nearly three thousand pages long, followed by the first five continuations. The six later continuations are each bound separately. "This series of NACHRICHTEN is one of the most important source works on the history of Georgia, being the contemporary accounts of the German settlements in the province..." - De Renne. Of special note in the first volume is the folding plate of the Lower Creek chief, Tomo Chachi Mico, standing majestically with his arm around the shoulder of his nephew, Tooanahowi, who is holding his clan symbol of an eagle. Tomo Chachi welcomed and was helpful to the first Georgia settlers, and accompanied Gen. Oglethorpe on a trip to London in 1734. This portrait is based on a painting executed at that time by William Verelst (the original of which is now at Winterthur). A British mezzotint artist soon produced the first print version of the portrait, which the present engraving closely copies. It is one of only a handful of life portraits of American Indians created in the 18th century, and one of only two such relating to southern tribes (the other is Cunne Shote, a Cherokee chief who visited London in 1762). Following the 1741 production, this offering includes six additional annual continuations and two anthologies. They are: 1) SIEBENTE CONTINVATION DER AUSFÜHRLICHEN NACHRICHT VON DEN SALTZBURGISCHEN EMIGRANTEN.... Halle. 1741. [52],361- 704pp. (lacking the last twelve pages) plus folding table. Largely unopened. 2) NUENTE CONTINVATION DER AUSFÜHRLICHEN NACHRICHT VON DEN SALTZBURGISCHEN EMIGRANTEN.... Halle. 1743. [4],[1015]-1270pp. 3) ZEHENTE CONTINVATION DER AUSFÜHRLICHEN NACHRICHT VON DEN SALTZBURGISCHEN EMIGRANTEN.... Halle. 1744. [24],[1771]- 1930pp., without the misnumbering of p.1802 as 8002 found in some copies. Partially unopened. 4) ELFTE CONTINVATION DER AUSFÜHRLICHEN NACHRICHT VON DEN SALTZBURGISCHEN EMIGRANTEN.... Halle. 1745. [12],[1931]- 2138pp. Partially unopened. 5) ZWÖLTE CONINVATION DER AUSFÜHRLICHEN NACHRICHT VON DEN SALTZBURGISCHEN EMIGRANTEN.... Halle. 1746. [12],[2139]- 2270pp., lacking the appended Register (eighteen leaves). 6) DER DRE YZEHENTEN CONTINVATION DERER AUSFÜHRLICHEN NACHRICHT VON DEN SALTZBURGISCHEN EMIGRANTEN.... Halle. 1749. [20],[73]-203pp. 7) DER AUSFUHRLICHEN NACHRICHTEN VON DER KONIGLICH- GROSS-BRITANNISCHEN COLONIE SALTZBURGISCHER EMIGRANTEN IN AMERICA.... Halle. 1746. [64],358,[2]pp. Intended to reprint the sixth through the twelfth continuations, only the first continuation intended for this volume is present. That being said, the numerous separate continuations listed above plus this comprise, to this point, a complete assemblage of all continuations save the one for 1742. 8) DER AUSFUHRLICHEN NACHRICHTEN VON DER KONIGLICH-GROSS-BRITANNISCHEN COLONIE SALTZBURGISCHER EMIGRANTEN IN AMERICA.... Halle. 1752. [26],30,537-770pp. Largely unopened. The last of the anthologies, intended to reprint the thirteenth through the eighteenth continuations, present here is solely the continuation for 1752. Combined with the separate 1749 continuation listed above, five continuations from this last group are lacking. Despite a few missing texts, this offering is an impressive run of the extraordinarily scarce Salzburger tracts. While it is possible the separate issues listed above were removed from anthologies, it is more likely they are the original separate issues for their respective years, and as such they are of the greatest rarity. The De Renne library possessed only the seventeenth and eighteenth continuations in the separate issue. A simply exhaustive chronicle of the Germans in Georgia, considered by far the best account of the region for its time. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 741/234, 740/314. BAGINSKY GERMAN AMERICANA 305. [A set of four ornithological prints]

London: Josephus Sympson, 1741. Large folio. (16 1/2 x 20 5/16 inches). Without text (as issued). 4 copper-engraved plates by Josephus Sympson after Marmaduke Cradock, window-mounted within a modern cloth box, leather lettering-piece. A fine lively series featuring at least 16 different species of birds. Cradock was born at Somerton, near Ilchester, in Somerset in about 1660. He was apprenticed to a house painter in London, but at the end of the apprenticeship turned to painting animals, birds and still life. His success with private patrons was limited and, in the main, he produced pictures for dealers. The DNB describes his work for Josephus Sympson as being `very spirited' and notes that it was not until after his death that the 'merits of his pictures were recognised, and they rose in value'. Walpole praised some of his work, and examples are included in Lord Derby's famous collection at Knowsley and the Yale Centre for British Art. The subjects of the plates are as follows: 1. A kestrel (?) carries off a chick, whilst a cock and hen and their four remaining chicks take flight, looking on are a pea-hen (?) and a barn owl, whilst a wren and a tit squabble on a roof nearby. 2. A cock pheasant stands guard on a stump, a juvenile pheasant makes off with an ear of corn, at a stream close by two kingfishers perch, on the banks of the stream a family of ducks (a drake, the female and 4 ducklings) feed, above them a third kingfisher flies off, in the background a duck sits on her nest. 3. A pigeon stands on a block of masonry, watched by a tit, a robin and a second pigeon, a short-tailed parrot perches on a nearby branch, above a pair of lapwings. 4. A woodpecker returns to the nest-hole to be greeted by its mate, on a nearby branch three sparrows perch, to the right of them are a pair of swallows and a fourth sparrow preening itself.

Six Plates from Tombeaux des Princes, des Grands Capitaines et autres hommes illustres qui ont fleuri dans la Grande-Bretagne

Paris: for MacSwinney,, [1741] . Within mounts c.630 × 400 mm. Copper engravings with etching. Light toning overall, but otherwise very good. A rather raffish character, McSwiny made and lost "a moderate younger brother's fortune" as a theatrical impresario in London. With the failure of Handel's Teseo in 1713 he was bankrupted and forced to flee abroad. Settling in Italy he continued to act as an agent for Italian opera in London, recruiting singers and recommending operas, but also moved into the commissioning of works of art from young Italian painters. It was McSwiny's patronage that helped establish the close connection between Canaletto and England. In the 1720s he commissioned a team of Venetian and Bolognese artists, including Canaletto, Cimaroli, Creti and Ricci, to produce a series of capriccio landscapes featuring allegorical tombs celebrating great men of recent English history. The Duke of Richmond was an important patron of the enterprise, acquiring at least ten of the paintings, and in the 1730s a prospectus was issued inviting subscriptions from "the Ladies and Gentlemen of Taste of Great Britain" for a volume of engravings based on the paintings. These were finally produced in Paris in 1741 drawn by Creti's pupil Domenico Maria Fratta and employing some of the finest French engravers of the period, including Tardieu, Beauvais and Cochin. Each finely-engraved plate features a ruined classical tomb rendered in superb architectural detail within an Italianate landscape. These serve as the setting for complex allegorical scenes illustrative of the quotations from ancient authors which serve as captions. The collection was described by Cohen-De Ricci as "très rare.

printed for Mr W Monro and W Drummond, sold by them & other booksellers, Edinburgh , 1741 . 3rd edition. . Calf, G. x+324+iv+80pp, upper board detached & leather rather worn & rubbed, title a little grubby with an old ownership inscription, lacks the front & rear endpapers as well as the final blank, a fair copy. The work contains a separate title page for that part of the work on the Nerves & Heart. Ex Library [ Royal College of Surgeons Ireland ] with a single ink stamp. Third edition of a popular account of human anatomy which Monro had originally published in 1726. Unillustrated it was intended to complement his demonstrations on human anatomy which he had begun in 1720 at Surgeons' Hall in Edinburgh Medical School ( he would petition Edinburgh town council in 1725 for a more secure teaching location after accusations of grave robbing by he & his students led to rioting by the locals ). The book was popular due to Monro's 'fine observational and expository skills'. [DNB].

Dei Gran Duchi di Toscana della Real Casa de' Medici, protettori delle lettere, e delle belle arti, ragionamenti istorici

Venice: Giovanni Battistia Recurti, 1741. First edition. Hard cover. Fine/A fine specimen of Venetian book arts of the 18th century. The text is basically a vehicle for the nine full-page portraits of Medici dukes by Campiglia, which are highly realized and vivid. Almost as compelling are the views of the major cities of Tuscany engraved by the Venetian book illustrator Giuseppe Filosi (who had "borrowed" the idea from the headpieces by Visentini illustrating the 1738 edition of Guicciardini). The very feel of the paper gives off a sensation of luxury. All collations call for nine portraits, as in this copy, although copies exist with extra plates inserted.. Royal Folio (47cm); [2], xxiv, 192, [14] pages, and 9 full page portraits after Giandomenico Campiglia. Title page in red and black, with complicated allegorical device by Giuseppe Filosi; 8 chapter head pieces by Filosi showing the cities of Tuscany, and 9 tail pieces (some duplicate images) also by Filosi. Engraved initials. Bound in contemporary full vellum over boards, with recent leather title label. Edges stained blue. Very light marginal dampstain in 19th quire, else a bright, crisp, fresh and nearly pristine copy. References: Morazzoni, 217; Brunet (1842) I:314.

Catalogue des Livres de feu M. Lancelot, de l'Academie Royale des Belles-Lettres

Woodcut device on title. 4 p.l., 424 (i.e. 416) pp., 76* pp. 8vo, cont. mottled calf, flat spine richly gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Paris: G. Martin, 1741. The scarce sale catalogue of the library of Antoine Lancelot (1675-1740), French historian and archeologist and Inspector of the Collège Royal, who assisted Bayle with his Dictionnaire Critique and worked with Mabillon on various scholarly projects. Lancelot served as under-librarian of the Collège Mazarin where he deciphered many of its early manuscripts and arranged the archives. This was a large and fine library of 6000 lots (often with several books in a lot), particularly rich in French history, and including 240 manuscripts. In his introduction, Martin explains that he has reprinted Lancelot's own manuscript catalogue with his notes, though somewhat differently classified. The second part, lots numbered 4,745 to 6,000, lists the books acquired by him after the completion of Lancelot's own catalogue. Very nice copy with the scarce supplement. ❧ Biographie Universelle, Vol. 23, pp. 322-24. Gustave Brunet, Dictionnaire de Bibliologie Catholique, col. 479-"Catalogue important." La Famille de Marêchal [Pl. 40]

Paris: Moyreau, 1741. Hand-coloured engraving on laid paper by Moyreau. Very good condition apart from some overall light soiling and minor foxing, mild rippling, and a small stain in the top right corner of the sheet. A few small brown and black spots in the left margin. 14 1/4 x 18 3/4 inches. 18 5/8 x 23 3/4 inches. A fine composition showing a soldier or cavalryman returning home to his family. This beautifully coloured print is one of many engravings Jean Moyreau (1690-1762) made of Wouwerman's paintings. Born into a family of Dutch artists in Haarlem in 1619, the prolific draughtsman and painter Philips Wouwerman was primarily renowned for his lively battle and hunting scenes. After an early elementary introduction to the art of painting by his father, Paulus Joostens, he trained with the landscape painter Jan Wynants (1620-1679) and briefly worked in the Hamburg studio of the history painter Everard Decker (d. 1647) around 1638. Wouwerman later returned to Haarlem, where he joined the Guild of St. Luke, which later elected him to the office of vinder in 1646. His elegantly rendered, distinctive works, which are characterized by their luminous colour and detailed, animated treatment of figures and landscape alike, were extremely popular in the seventeenth century as well as the nineteenth century, during which they were zealously collected. In addition to his hunting scenes, Wouwerman's varied and substantial repertoire of subjects included military and battle scenes, landscapes, travellers, animals and genre subjects. Cf. The North- American?s Almanack, And Gentleman?s and Lady?s Diary, For the Year of our Lord Christ 1776

Thomas, Edes, & Hall, Pamphlet format, 8vo, stitched self wrappers, 24pp. Some browning and foxing, early child?s scribbling in bottom margin of title, and the usual corner folds. Overall in very good condition, better than you normally see for almanacs of this period. What makes this almanac unique is that Sterns (1741-1809) included an account of Lexington and Concord, which has been attributed to William S, Gordon. Although Sterns was believed to have Tory leanings, and served time in jail for it, this commentary appears to present more of American perspective. This first hand report of the start of the American Revolution begins with an account of how British soldiers fired on dispersing American militia at Lexington, and how a more organized group of the American militia fired back at the British at Concord ("The Shot Heard Round The World?) sending them into retreat. Album of 50 botanical paintings on vellum, 25 of which feature South African plants. Executed 1777-1780.

Folio album (mount dimensions 460 x 375 mm, vellum sheet dimensions 340 x 255 mm), comprising one manuscript calligraphic title 'Drawings by Elizabeth [Montagu] Duchess of Manchester' and 50 botanical paintings, body- and watercolours on vellum, the vellums mounted within green wash frame borders on heavy card, the vellums numbered consecutively 1-50, and botanical names in Latin and English, with places of origin, in pen on versos; contemporary straight-grained morocco, elaborate gilt panels with green and yellow morocco overlays with greek key border, floral border, gilt greek key dentelles, spine with elaborate gilt panels and green morocco label 'Drawings', gilt edges, bookplate and label of Kimbolton Castle on front marbled paper pastedown. A fine series of beautifully executed paintings of exotic flowering plants recently introducted into cultivation, and half of which come from South Africa. They are painted in the style of Ehret. Elizabeth Montagu (1741-1832) was an accomplished botanical artist, who may have been taught by Peter Brown (fl 1758-99), court painter to the Prince of Wales, and probable pupil of Georg Dionysius Ehret. The South African specimens reflect some of the introductions made by the botanist and plant collector Francis Masson (1741-1805), who was sent by Kew Gardens to South Africa in 1772 to collect plants and bulbs. He collected until the end of 1775, before going on to the Canaries, Azores, Maderia, and West Indies (where many of the other plants depicted derive from), returning to England in 1781. This time frame matches closely that of the present album. He was working under the aegis of Sir Joseph Banks, director of Kew, and also friend of George Montagu, Elizabeth's husband, so a Masson/Kew provenance of the plants is most likely.
