PENSILVANIA, 1742. AN ALMANACK, OR EPHEMERIS.

Philadelphia: Printed and Sold by Andrew Bradford, [1741]. - [32]pp. 12mo. Printed self-wrappers, stitched. Contemporary ink inscription ("Jacob Taylor") in upper margin of titlepage; contemporary ink correction on p.[27]. Cellophane tape joining signature at spine, occasional minor foxing. Else bright, clean, and very good. In a half morocco and cloth box. An almanac by Jacob Taylor, who published his important Pennsylvania almanac for the years 1700 to 1746. It is a distinct possibility that the present copy was owned and signed by Taylor, as his inscribed name on the titlepage is accompanied later in the volume by a manuscript correction to a poem ("manumated" becomes "manumitted"). Taylor took the poetry in his almanacs seriously, printing excerpts of PARADISE LOST in 1741, and composing well-received verse of his own. In addition to the calendar, this 1746 almanac contains a substantial amount of poetry; lists of courts, fairs, and Quaker meetings; and a discussion of Hannibal's oath before the gods. This he concludes with a quote from the 1739 almanac of "R. Saunders" (Benjamin Franklin's Poor Richard) on the dangers of false wit and pride in the present age, commenting favorably on Saunders, "By wicked Wit the Truth is often drown'd; Here certain Truth adorn'd with Wit is found" (p.[23]). Taylor's almanac was printed by different Philadelphia printers over time. Some were printed by Franklin, but this one was issued by Andrew Bradford, one of Franklin's rivals and the son of William Bradford, the first printer in Philadelphia. DRAKE 9634. EVANS 4818. L'orthopédie ou l'art de prevenir et de corriger dans les enfans, les difformités du corps.Paris: Chez la veuve Alix; Lambert & Durand, 1741.

Rare first edition, and a very fine copy, of the "first book on orthopedics" (Garrison-Morton). A work "of supreme importance" (Bick).

❧Grolier/Medicine 42; Lilly, Notable Medical Books 113; Norman 55; Heirs of Hippocrates 697; Garrison-Morton 4301.

"Nicholas Andry coined the word 'orthopaedics' in French as orthopédie, derived from the Greek words orthos ('correct', 'straight') and paidion ('child'), when he published Orthopedie (translated as Orthopaedia: or the Art of Correcting and Preventing Deformities in Children) in 1741. Though as the name implies it was initially developed with attention to children, the correction of spinal and bony deformities in all stages of life eventually became the cornerstone of orthopedic practice." (Wikipedia).

Andry's "book was the first monograph on the subject, and the emblematic engraving it contains of a tree with a crooked trunk tied to a straight post has been adopted as a symbol of orthopedics.
"Andry grasped the crucial principles that the muscles in balance are the molders of the body in childhood and that weakness in a muscle, resulting in a muscle imbalance, can result in the onset of a deformity during growth. He therefore recommended that the offending muscle be subjected to a course of exercise, by which deformities could be prevented or cured. His methods were simple but ingenious, based on observation and on the principle that deformities that are due to one form of movement or habit can be undone by a movement or habit of the opposite kind. For example, he observed that a corpulent man or a pregnant woman walks with a straight back; therefore, if a youth stoops, he should be made to carry a burden in front of his body. Andry devised balancing and gymnastic exercises and encouraged childhood games. He also used massage, cold applications, and what we now call orthopedic beds. For established deformities, he resorted to the use of mechanical aids. He also believed that deformities in children were caused by ill-fitting or restrictive clothing and by unnatural postures enforced by badly designed children's furniture. He thus paid great attention to the adoption of proper posture, which he regarded as being of the utmost importance. Later in the eighteenth century, Jean Pierre David was to show the value of rest in the body's own repair system, but Andry demonstrated that exercise as well as rest had an appropriate place in the treatment of physical problems." (Grolier/Medicine).. Two vols, 12mo (163 x 97 mm), bound in two fine contemporary French calf with richly gilt spines, pp. [4] i-cxviij [i.e., cxviij] 345 [3], engraved frontispiece by J. Six Plates from Tombeaux des Princes, des Grands Capitaines et autres hommes illustres qui ont fleuri dans la Grande-Bretagne.

Paris: for MacSwinney, [1741] - Within mounts c.630 × 400 mm. Copper engravings with etching. Light toning overall, but otherwise very good. A rather raffish character, McSwiny made and lost "a moderate younger brother's fortune" as a theatrical impresario in London. With the failure of Handel's Teseo in 1713 he was bankrupted and forced to flee abroad. Settling in Italy he continued to act as an agent for Italian opera in London, recruiting singers and recommending operas, but also moved into the commissioning of works of art from young Italian painters. It was McSwiny's patronage that helped establish the close connection between Canaletto and England. In the 1720s he commissioned a team of Venetian and Bolognese artists, including Canaletto, Cimaroli, Creti and Ricci, to produce a series of capriccio landscapes featuring allegorical tombs celebrating great men of recent English history. The Duke of Richmond was an important patron of the enterprise, acquiring at least ten of the paintings, and in the 1730s a prospectus was issued inviting subscriptions from "the Ladies and Gentlemen of Taste of Great Britain" for a volume of engravings based on the paintings. These were finally produced in Paris in 1741 drawn by Creti's pupil Domenico Maria Fratta and employing some of the finest French engravers of the period, including Tardieu, Beauvais and Cochin. Each finely-engraved plate features a ruined classical tomb rendered in superb architectural detail within an Italianate landscape. These serve as the setting for complex allegorical scenes illustrative of the quotations from ancient authors which serve as captions. The collection was described by Cohen-De Ricci as "très rare." NICOLAI KLIMII ITER SUBTERRANEUM NOVAM TELLURIS THEORIAM AC HISTORIAM QUINTAE MONARCHIAE ADHUC NOBIS INCOGNITAE EXHIBENS E BIBLIOTHECA B. ABELINI

Hafniae & Lipsiae [Copenhagen and Leipzig]: Sumptibus Jacobi Preussii,. 1741. Small octavo, pp. [1-2: engraved title leaf] [1] 2-380, four inserted plates, one folded,. late nineteenth century imitation vellum, titled in black on spine panel, all edges stained green, marbled endpapers.. Several nicks to vellum spine panel, binding a bit soiled; internally. a fine, very clean copy. A handsome copy in an attractive binding. which mimics that of an early eighteenth-century vellum binding.. (#80686). First edition. Holberg's Niels Klim is the first important fictional use of astronomer Edmond Halley's theory (suggested in a paper to account for magnetic phenomena published by Royal Society in 1692) that the Earth (and the other planets) consisted of concentric, nested spheres surrounding a small central sun, with, possibly, openings at the poles. Holberg's satire was first published in Latin to gain a wide audience, which it did. The book was never banned in Denmark, though it was unpopular among religious powers of the time. "Holberg was one of the leading scholars and playwrights of the eighteenth century, perhaps the chief literary figure in Denmark to date. Niels Klim has been translated into at least thirteen languages and published in more than sixty editions, including at least eight in English. It is in the genre of the imaginary voyage which has been so much a part of utopian writing from its very beginnings. In this case the voyage to the interior of the earth comes about when Niels Klim falls down a shaft and finds himself in a new world. He visits a number of different countries including Potu the ideal state, which expels him for suggesting that women should not hold public office. Other states are modeled on various terrestrial countries; in Martinia (France) he is honored for inventing the periwig. In primitive Quama (Russia) he becomes emperor by leading the inhabitants to victory over neighboring nations, but rebellion against his tyranny forces him to flee. His journey ends when he crawls through another hole and finds himself back in Norway ... Scholars have pointed out numerous resemblances to Gulliver's Travels, and there are, indeed, many similarities. Perhaps the chief difference is that Swift was concerned with the behavior of individuals and Holberg with that of society." - Lewis, Utopian Literature, p. 92. "Essentially a satire on European culture and institutions in the guise of an imaginary voyage. It was translated into Danish not long after the Latin publication, and in Denmark its acceptance has paralleled that of Swift's Gulliver's Travels in the English-speaking world ... Holberg's work is an obvious imitation of Swift's Gulliver's Travels, and a comparison is called for. Holberg's satire is wider in scope, more penetrating in analysis, and less local than Swift's; the peculiarly British elements in Swift are not paralleled by Scandinavian elements in Holberg, who also lacks Swift's misanthropy. In imagination and literary polish, however, Swift is superior to Holberg." - Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 1114. Aldiss and Wingrove, Trillion Year Spree, pp. 78-9. Anatomy of Wonder (1976) 1-21; (1981) 1-100; (1987) 1-50; 6-346; and 6-390; and (1995) 1-50. Clute and Nicholls (eds), The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction (1993), p. 577. The Works

London, for Henry Lintot; for R. Dodsley, and Sold by T. Cooper,, 1741–3. 9 volumes, crown octavo. Contemporary sprinkled calf, double gilt rules, early morocco labels, red sprinkled edges. Engraved portrait frontispiece in vol. I; all but the first title-page printed in red and black; with half-titles where called for. Some early MS. notes on the first front endpapers and occasionally elsewhere. Rubbed, some joints starting, spine ends a little chipped (quite noticeably at the head of vol. II), boards a little bowed, but generally a very pleasing contemporary set, the contents clean and fresh, the bindings still firm. First editions of the last three volumes. The bibliography of editions of Pope's Works produced during the last few years of his life is complex, as were Pope's dealings with publishers and the various small amendments made as the volumes went through the press. Dodsley and Cooper were the main publishers who handled this work: their names appear together in vols. 3–5 which are dated 1743; and in vols. 6 and 9, which are dated 1742. Cooper's name alone appears in the imprint for vols. 7 and 8, both dated 1742, though Griffith suggests that this does not imply that Dodsley had no hand in these volumes. But Henry Lintot retained the copyright to vols. 1 and 2, which have his name as publisher, dated 1743 and 1741 respectively. The early volumes are essentially close reprints of earlier octavo editions, though there is some very minor new matter: vols. 7, 8 and 9 (the Letters) are first printings.

Histoire générale des cérémonies, moeurs, et coutumes religieuses de tous les peuples du monde.

Paris, Rollin fils, 1741. - Folio (305 x 455 mm). 7 vols. All title pages printed in red and black. With engr. frontispiece, 7 engr. title-vignettes, numerous engr. head- and tailpieces and initials, and 243 plates. Contemp. half calf; spine elaborated gilt with double giltstamped red labels. A perfectly preserved tall paper copy of this beautifully illustrated ethnographic work on the world's religions. Despite condemnation by the Catholic church, the publication was a resounding success. "'Ceremonies and customs' prepared the ground for religious toleration amid seemingly unending religious conflict, and demonstrated the impact of the global on Western consciousness [.] as it shaped the development of a modern, secular understanding of religion" (Hunt). - Based on the author's "Cérémonies et coutumes religieuses de tous les peuples du monde" (Amsterdam, 1723-1743), the text is corrected (and sometimes entirely revised) from the original edition. The plates are mostly repeated from the Dutch publication, but the vignettes are engraved in Paris (by Duflos and others). Also contains descriptions of irreligious customs, such as the Adamites, Flagellants, etc. - Bindings a little rubbed, a bit browned in places, otherwise an excellent and unusually wide-margined complete copy in uniform bindings with elaborately gilt spines.

The first edition of Heinrich Schubert's sermons; two parts in one large clasped volume. A solid copy in original binding with sturdy hinges and stable clasp in working order. Pages age-toned but minimal staining. Early signatures of Andreas Jung (1777) and Sophie E. Deithoff. Jung landed in Halifax Nova Scotia on The Ann, 13 September, 1750 and settled in Lunenburg. This volume is directly related to the first Lutheran Church in Canada, The Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lunenburg. "Andreas was an ardent Lutheran. In 1760 he wrote to relatives in Germany, regarding the need of an Evangelist Lutheran Minister; he also noted that peace was made with the Indians. In 1770 he was elected one of the Elders of Zion Lutheran Church. During the construction of the church he contributed voluntary labour, a few materials and money. He was also employed in the construction of the Church, as one of the highest rated artificers and was paid 3 shillings a day. He signed the Membership Roll in 1775 and appears in Church Account Book 1770 - 1785. In addition to being an Elder, he was Church Treasurer from its formation in 1770 until the time of his death in 1808. During the construction of the Parsonage in 1773, lime etc. for mortar and plaster was bought from Casper JUNG." [Chris Young, Seawhy] Indeed we are indebted to Andreas Jung's diligence for chronicling the early years of Lutheranism in the Lunenburg area (see D. Luther Ross: Acadie and the Acadians].
