Histoire générale des cérémonies, moeurs, et coutumes religieuses de tous les peuples du monde.

Paris, Rollin fils, 1741. - Folio (305 x 455 mm). 7 vols. All title pages printed in red and black. With engr. frontispiece, 7 engr. title-vignettes, numerous engr. head- and tailpieces and initials, and 243 plates. Contemp. half calf; spine elaborated gilt with double giltstamped red labels. A perfectly preserved tall paper copy of this beautifully illustrated ethnographic work on the world's religions. Despite condemnation by the Catholic church, the publication was a resounding success. "'Ceremonies and customs' prepared the ground for religious toleration amid seemingly unending religious conflict, and demonstrated the impact of the global on Western consciousness [.] as it shaped the development of a modern, secular understanding of religion" (Hunt). - Based on the author's "Cérémonies et coutumes religieuses de tous les peuples du monde" (Amsterdam, 1723-1743), the text is corrected (and sometimes entirely revised) from the original edition. The plates are mostly repeated from the Dutch publication, but the vignettes are engraved in Paris (by Duflos and others). Also contains descriptions of irreligious customs, such as the Adamites, Flagellants, etc. - Bindings a little rubbed, a bit browned in places, otherwise an excellent and unusually wide-margined complete copy in uniform bindings with elaborately gilt spines.       Verlegung des Wäysenhauses, Halle 1741 - [Title page], [14], [1]-886, [1]-736, [44] (Registers): 1680 pages, complete. The first edition of Heinrich Schubert's sermons; two parts in one large clasped volume. A solid copy in original binding with sturdy hinges and stable clasp in working order. Pages age-toned but minimal staining. Early signatures of Andreas Jung (1777) and Sophie E. Deithoff. Jung landed in Halifax Nova Scotia on The Ann, 13 September, 1750 and settled in Lunenburg. This volume is directly related to the first Lutheran Church in Canada, The Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lunenburg. "Andreas was an ardent Lutheran. In 1760 he wrote to relatives in Germany, regarding the need of an Evangelist Lutheran Minister; he also noted that peace was made with the Indians. In 1770 he was elected one of the Elders of Zion Lutheran Church. During the construction of the church he contributed voluntary labour, a few materials and money. He was also employed in the construction of the Church, as one of the highest rated artificers and was paid 3 shillings a day. He signed the Membership Roll in 1775 and appears in Church Account Book 1770 - 1785. In addition to being an Elder, he was Church Treasurer from its formation in 1770 until the time of his death in 1808. During the construction of the Parsonage in 1773, lime etc. for mortar and plaster was bought from Casper JUNG." [Chris Young, Seawhy] Indeed we are indebted to Andreas Jung's diligence for chronicling the early years of Lutheranism in the Lunenburg area (see D. Luther Ross: Acadie and the Acadians].         Historia de la provincia de la compañía de Jesus del Nuevo Reyno de Granada en la America, descripción, y relación exacta de sus gloriosas missiones en el reyno, llanos, meta, y Rio Orinoco, almas, y terreno

1741 - First edition of one of the most influential and richest sources of information on the Jesuits in Colombia. 1741. Madrid. Manuel Fernández. In folio (292 mm x 200 mm). 1 [blank] + 14 ff. + 618 + 1 ff. + folding map. Contemporary limp vellum, lacking ties, gently soiled, entirely unrestored. A fine, fresh and tall copy, last folios with damp stain on inner lower margin, last folio with paper loss away from text, scattered foxing or browning but overall excellent with the appeal of a genuine copy. First –and only- edition of this extremely rare and important work on the Jesuit Missions in New Granada (current Colombia), including extensive information on the Orinoco. The work is rich in information regarding the labor and progresses made by the Societas Iesu, the local costumes, way of life, and the history of the region. It also includes information taken from earlier Jesuit sources, mainly those of father Gumilla, who focuses more on the Orinoco. “ a very important chronicle of a part of America where there exists very little documentation. It is a work that, with that of Piedrahita, forms a complete history of New Granada” (Leclerc). Cassani (1673 -1750) was a Spanish Jesuit professor of mathematics and astronomy, a prolific writer and learned scholar and ultimately one of the founders of the Academia de la Lengua Española (1713); amongst his works we count the Tratado de la naturaleza y origen de los cometas (Madrid, 1737) and a part of the famed biography of the Jesuits Varones Ilustres de la Compañia de Jesus. As a Jesuit, he had access to the letters and relations from missionaries to America, which allowed him to compose this chronicle on the Jesuit exploits in Colombia. This work is ostensibly the most important and comprehensive made on the subject to the time of its publication. Illustrated with a folding map of Colombia and Venezuela, by Minguet after the map by Gumilla -published in his “El Orinoco Ilustrado”, 1741-, which shows the locations of the full network of Jesuit missions in the region; it includes the mouth of the Orinoco River, the North of Brazil and “La Cayana” in the Dutch settlements.       Paris 1741 chex Huart, Libraire-Imp. De Monseigneur le Dauphin, proche la Fontaine Saint Severin, à la Justice.Avec Approbation et Privilege du Roi - First edition Square quarto (9.75 by 8 inches; 24.75 by 20.32 cm.); [32]; [1]-512; 20 plates; [i]-cxxvii; index (Table des Matières) in rear, in addition to Table des Chapitres in front; 28 folding plates ("planches") of engravings in black and white interspersed with text pages, plus one folding plate ("Fig. X") of identical dimensions; suite of 20 non-folding black and white engraved plates inserted after page 512; total of 49 plates, as called for on title-page, which is lettered in red and black; plates are complete and untorn; engraved decorations at head of each chapter. With no frontispiece or dedication, which did not appear in the first edition. Included in text (pp. 180-331) and listed in table of contents, but not mentioned on title-page, is a seventh traité entitled Le Medecin, ou Traité Des Maladies des Chevaux; within this section are inserted Planches 17-28. About very good in full plain contemporary vellum, showing sun-browning and scattered stains; 3 raised bands on spine; slight rubbing to corners; plain contemporary endpapers, with two ownership inscriptions from the 20th century in ink on first free endsheet; an earlier inscription is also on title-page, which bears an ink-stain; light apparent water-stain to bottom (and often to top) of most pages near the gutter (inside edge), covering an area about 2 by 2 inches (5 by 5 cm.) at the interior margins; most, but not all, of the folding plates are effected by these stains, but generally along their folds, outside the images; some of the non-folding plates show little, if any, staining. Light, occasional foxing to pages, which are otherwise bright and unmarked; both front and rear hinges tight and firm; a fresh, well-preserved copy. First edition is now rare; an uncommon issue of the first printing, with text in seven sections (one more than is called for). Author's preface, approbation/privilege du roy, errata; at the end of the text is a Dictionnaire des Termes de Cavalerie. Garsault's is a work of meticulous organization and detailed illustration; an exhaustive compendium, it was regularly reprinted until the 1840’s. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A. De Vries writes short notes to each sculpture giving full details of the location, dimensions, subject and the name of the sculptures, most ranging from 10-20\' in height, but one depicting Bacchus was 40 feet (only the center figure in this gigantic \"frieze\" is represented). With an engraved frontispiece depicting surgeons treating a patient, and 54 (vol. 1) and 32 (vol. 2) folding engraved plates with surgical instruments and illustrations of treatments of various illnesses. Modern green morocco, gold-tooled spines.

Blake p. 412; BMN I, p. 302; Hirsch V, p. 298f; STCN (8 copies); cf. Garrisson & Morton 5571; Heirs of Hippocrates 293; Krivatsy 10476. Enlarged and richly illustrated new Dutch translation, by Gerard Dicten, of the greatly expanded 1741 edition of the most famous, comprehensive and complete surgical work on operative and other procedures, such as amputations, reduction of dislocations, forceps delivery of dead fetuses, neurosurgery, bandaging and splinting, etc., containing an extensively illustrated catalogue of surgical instruments of the period.Johannes Schultes (1595-1645), born in Ulm on the Danube and a pupil of Hieronymus Fabricius ab Aquapendente and Adriaan van de Spiegel at Padua, ranked alongside Fabry von Hilden as the leading German surgeon of his era. He was the inventor of many devices and bandages such as the many-tailed bandage (known as Scultetus's bandage). Its practical value for surgeons immediately made it an immense success. The editions published in The Netherlands were of the greatest importance, both for their revisions and expansions and because the international Dutch book trade spread them around the world. An untrimmed copy, with minor foxing or browning and the edges somewhat tattered (the title-page to volume 2 backed to repair marginal damage), but still in good condition.

Amsterdam: Jean Frederic Bernard, 1741.Nouvelle edition. Three quarto volumes (9 3/8 x 7 1/2 inches; 238 x 190 mm). [2, blank] [10, 4 of which are ads], [i]-xxxvi, [1]-526, [4, blank]; [2, blank], [6], xxxiv, [3]-383, [2, blank]; [8], [2, ads], [8. letter], 1-144, 147-218, [1]-150, [35, table], [3, blank] pp. Each volume with half-title. Volume I and II with engraved half-titles and volume II with engraved frontispiece. An additional seventeen engraved plates, four of which are folding. Three of the folding plates are engravings of Rabelais' residence and the other is a folding map. Numerous other engraved initials, chapter titles and vignettes.Contemporary tan polished calf. Triple gilt fillet borders. Edges and turn-ins tooled in gilt. Spines with red and brown morocco spine labels lettered in gilt. Spines stamped in gilt. All edges dyed red. Marbled endpapers. Previous owner's bookplate to front pastedown of each volume. Some old ink marginalia to final blanks of volumes I and II. Some faded ownership initials to title-pages. Some light and occasional foxing. Overall a very handsome set.ìRabelais [1494?-ca. 1553] was held in high regard by his contemporaries as an eminent physician, as a pioneer of humanism, and as the author of an entertaining Book. It is in this last capacity that he is chiefly known to posterity. He published Pantagruel, the first installment of his great work, late in 1532 or in 1533; Gargantua in 1534; the Tiers Livre de Pantagruel in 1546; part of the Quart Livre in 1548 and the whole Book in 1552. The authenticity of the Fifth Book is questionable; it certainly contains work by other hands and was perhaps worked up from fragments and imperfect or rejected drafts left by Rabelais at his death...The work does not form a single artistic whole. Composed at intervals over twenty years, it varies greatly in character as the spirit moved the author or circumstances prompted; it is loosely held together by a thread of narrative and abounds in digressions. We have in the first two Books the fantastic tale of a family of giants, written (so Rabelais tells us) in moments of relaxation for the solace of the sick, though occasion is taken to expose the authorís views on education, the monks, and the theologians. In the Third Book the fantastic features are abandoned and we pass to a series of amusing and dramatic discussions of the questions of the day. The Fourth and Fifth Books take us on a voyage to Cathay and provide occasion for satire and propaganda suited to the political views of the French court. The interest of the whole lies in the vivid picture it gives not only of French society in the early days of the Renaissance but also of the Protean author himself: his enthusiastic humanism, his love of life in all its manifestations and hatred of asceticism, his interest in knowledge of all kinds, above all his contempt for monkery and scholasticismî (The Oxford Companion to French Literature).HBS 65592.$3,500

With engraved allegorical frontispiece, 12 engraved plates, a small engraved scene on the title-page and armorial engraving above the dedication. All engravings coloured by a contemporary hand with liberal use of gold. Contemporary richly gold-tooled dark olive morocco, gold-tooled board edges and turn-ins. By the so-called "Three Acorn Bindery" in Amsterdam. Probably coloured and bound as a presentation copy, but with no inscription.

      E. de la Fontaine Verwey, Illustraties, 156; or the binding: cf. Storm van Leeuwen, Dutch Decorated Bookbinding I, colour plate 31 (facing p. 122). Beautifully coloured copy, with liberal use of gold and in a splendidly gold-tooled contemporary binding, of the first and only edition of Sels's nearly 300-page verse rendition of the story of King Solomon.Sels (1741-1789), originally a bookkeeper for the Amsterdam exchange bank, withdrew to his family estate to write poetry. He enthusiastically supported the failed democratic "Patriot's" revolution of 1787. The present poem serves largely as a vehicle for Vinkeles's illustrations. The lovely binding is very similar to that shown in Storm van Leeuwen, colour plate 31, by an anonymous Amsterdam workshop that the author calls the "Three Acorn Bindery." The extra attention given to the colouring of the illustrations, together with the contemporary deluxe binding strongly suggests a presentation binding, but there is no inscription or indication of an early owner. In fine condition. The binding is slightly worn, mostly at the corners, but still very good. A beautifully bound and coloured copy, appropriately displaying Vinkeles's stunning engravings.

Grand Theatre de la Guerre en Amerique Suivant les Plus Novelles observations des Espagnols, Anglois, Francois & Hollandois.

1741 - Amsterdam: Ottens, c.1741. Original colour. 6 sheets conjoined, total 850 x 1590mm. Verdigris weaknesses reinforced on verso. A monumental map of the West Indies published to illustrate the War of Jenkins' Ear (1739-1742), which broke out because of Spanish attempts to hamper British trade with Spain's colonies in the Americas. The eight inset maps shown St. Augustine, Havana, 'la Ville Espagnole de S. Domingue'; Porto Bello, Carthagena, Curaçao, Acapulco & Vera-Cruz. The war gained its name from an incident of eight years earlier: in 1731 Robert Jenkins was returning home from Jamaica in his brig the 'Rebecca' when the Spanish coastguard stopped him on suspicion of smuggling. Jenkins was tied to a mast and had one of his ears cut off by the Spanish captain, who handed it back instructing him to tell King George II that the 'same will happen to him if caught doing the same'. Trade rivalry continued and, at the end of the decade, Britain was concerned that Spain would withdraw the 'asiento' (permission for the British to sell slaves in Spanish America). In a Parliamentary debate about the possible loss of this lucrative trade, Jenkins waved his ear at the MPs and gave the pro-war faction a cause that the general public could understand.
