[Commentary on the Mishnah]: Tosafot Yom Tov: Zerraim (Seeds), Moed (Festivals), and Nashim (Women) [The 1741 Amsterdam edition]

[Amsterdam]. [1741]. Small thick quarto. The first three Orders of The Mishnah bound together in one volume (each with a separate title page): [Num. 1. Zeraim]: 6 preliminary pages (including the title page) + 264pp.; [Num. 2. Moed]: title page + 344pp.; [Num. 3. Nashim]: title page + 318pp. Professionally bound in modern light black quarter morocco and marbled paper over boards, modern laid paper endpapers. Early trimming to the page margins: often within the printed headers along the top margin and the signature numerals on the bottom margin, a four-leaf gathering in Moed (no. 22) is partially damaged (early paper repairs at the margins with some loss of text), else about very good with some scattered staining and light worming to the upper gutter of the back third of the text block. A rare 1741 Dutch edition of Rabbi Heller's important commentary on the Mishnah, first published in Prague in 1614-17. This edition includes Bertinoro's classic commentary and Heller's incorporation of it into his own: both are indispensable and have since been incorporated into most, if not all subsequent printings. A scarce, early printing in a handsome modern binding. .

1741 - Jesuit-made map of northern Venezuela and Colombia. 1741. Madrid. Paul Minguet, on thick paper, old folds, strong impression. 405 mm x 280 mm. First edition, issued in the same year in Gumilla´s and Cassani´s works, priority not established. The map, which is more compressed than it should, extends from the mouth of the Orinoco River (and the Dutch and French settlements) to the tip of Panama, encompassing the whole of modern Colombia, or New Granada, and most of Venezuela; the Lake of Maracaibo is shown rather thin, identifies the towns of Santa Marta, Cartagena, Barcelona, Caracas, Cumana, Antioquia, La Hacha, to name but a few. It shows the locations of the full network of Jesuit missions in the region; includes the mouth of the Orinoco River, the North of Brazil and “La Cayana” in the Dutch settlements; indeed, the Jesuit who made the map, had more access to the cartographic information rendered by his colleagues than anyone else. It is dedicated to the Provincial of the Jesuit Order Francisco de Miranda, in a decorative cartouche at the bottom. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Pigmalion, ou la Statue animée.

      - Londres, Samuel Harding [i.e. Paris ?], 1741. An album of forty-nine botanical paintings on vellum. Drawings dated 1761-1782.

Large 4to (the mounts 390 x 330 mm, the vellum sheets 236 x 161 mm), comprising 49 original paintings in body- and watercolours on vellum, mounted on card within wash borders, the paintings captioned in ink; in contemporary red morocco, elaborate gilt panels on sides, gilt urns on spine, gilt edges, marbled endleaves, bookplate and shelf label of Kimbolton Castle on pastedown, spine labelled 'Drawings'. A fine series of beautifully executed paintings of flowering plants in the style of Ehret, mostly exotic ornamentals fashionable in horticulture or plants recently introduced into cultivation. Elizabeth Montagu (1741-1832) was an accomplished botanical artist, who may have been taught by Peter Brown (fl 1758-99), court painter to the Prince of Wales, and probable pupil of Georg Dionysius Ehret. These paintings are highly skilled both artistically and technically and clearly show the influence of Ehret. One, 'Optuntia vulgo herbariorum, the common Indian Fig, Apis violacea', dated 1769, a large Opuntia cactus, features a violet-coloured bee.

Burmannus.

      - Amsterdam, M. Uytwerf/, F. Changuion, J. Catulle, Uytwerf, 1741-1755. 6 volumes (bound in 4). Folio (390 x 255mm). With an engraved portrait of Rumphius and another of Burmann, 699 fine engraved plates (on 698 leaves), engraved vignettes. Early 19th century green half vellum, marbled sides (backcover hinge of vol. V splitting but firm). First edition, mixed first and second issue, with the rare 'Auctuarium' at the end of the last volume. A rare complete copy of the first great survey of the flora of the East-Indies. "Few important scientific works have come to print under greater difficulties" (Hunt). "The flora of Amboina is typically Malayan, although a few Australian types are present as in other parts of the Malayan region. Practically all the species found along the seacoast are of general distribution from India to Malaya and Polynesia ."(Merrill). In 1652 Rumphius enlisted with the Dutch East Indies Company and took up residence in Amboina in 1653. His sight was failing and by 1670, when his great work was ready for publication, he had become blind. His bad fortunes continued when in 1674 his wife was killed in an earthquake, and in 1687 a fire destroyed his library including his original drawings. These were drawn anew by his son Paul, and in 1692 the manuscript of the first six volumes was sent to Holland for publication, but the ship carrying it was destroyed by the French. Copies of the manuscript for the complete work did not reach Holland until 1697, where it languished for 32 years in the archives of the Dutch East Indies Company. It was Jan Burmann who rescued it and prepared it for publication. Titles of volumes V and VI mounted, 3 or 4 leaves with stamp in the margin, 1 text page with marginal repair. Volume V with some occasional damstaining. Plate 70 of volume V was never published (see Hunt). The text is both in Latin and Dutch.       Madrid, Manuel Fernandez, 1741.. FIRST EDITION. 4°, recent antique burgundy morocco, covers and spine richly gilt, inner dentelles gilt, all edges gilt, in morocco slipcase with moiré sides. Charming woodcut tailpieces. Minor soiling on title-page; minor foxing, and faint dampstains at edges of some leaves. Overall in fine condition. The @Compendio is certainly the earliest topographical and historical study of this area, giving accounts of the products, commerce, flora and fauna, types of architecture and shipbuilding. In the introduction he discusses the importance of Guayaquil as one of the major ports of the Spanish colonies in America, mentioning the attacks of English pirates such as Drake and Morgan and the measures that had been taken to defend the ports. A later chapter (pp. 82-90) is devoted to accounts of the English and Dutch pirates who had attacked the city. Chapters 10 and 11 refer to the Mangache and Colorado Indians. Alcedo y Herrera's bureaucratic experience (see below) made him exceptionally well informed on commercial matters in the Spanish colonies. The folding map, signed by Paul Minguet, shows the old and new sections of the city of Guayaquil, locating some 70 points of interest. Alcedo y Herrera (1690-1777) traveled to America in 1706 with the Viceroy of Peru; he later served as Presidente y Capitán General of Quito and as Governador General of Tierra Firme. *** Palau 6044: notes a facsimile edition of 100 copies, printed in 1946.       Venezia: Michele Marieschi, 1741 - Acquaforte di mm 301 X 470. Vergata grossa, ottimi margini. Filigrana a 3 lune. Provenienza: "Magnificentiores selectioresque urbis Venetiarum prospectus, quos olim Michael Marieschi venetus pictor, et architectus in plerisque tabulis depinxit". Pharmacopoea Helvetica, in duas partes divisa, quarum prior materiam medicam, botanico-physico-medice descriptam, posterios composita & praeparata, modum praeparandi vires & usum exhibet. Including: Syllabus medicamentorum simplicium et compositorum, in Pharmacopoea Helvetica comprehensorum, ...Basel, Johann Rudolf Imhof and sons, 1771. 3 parts in 1 volume. Folio. With engraved frontispiece. Near-contemporary half vellum.

Blake, p. 350; Neu, Wisconsin 3201; VD18, 10566074. First and only edition, in Latin, of the first official Swiss pharmacopoeia, with a preface by the Swiss anatomist and physiologist Albrecht von Haller in Bern, and an elaborate armorial frontispiece by Johann Georg Sturm. It takes its title almost word for word from the Wittenberg pharmacopoeia, first published in 1741. Although much of the information no doubt comes from that work, it is here presented very differently. The main text is divided into three parts: "Materiam medicam" gives an alphabetical list of medicinal plants and other ingredients, "Medicamenta simplicia et composita" gives instructions for preparing simple and compound medicines, arranged alphabetically by the names of the medicines, and "Syllabus medicamentorum" gives a classified list of the simple and compound medicines. With bookplate on pastedown. Some slight browning or foxing, a few leaves with small dark-brown spots, but otherwise in good condition and with generous margins. The binding is somewhat scuffed, with a small tear in the spine, and the tapes are broken at the inside of the front hinge. An extensive and important pharmacopoeia.

Zeit (berieben u. etwas bestoßen). Erste deutsche Ausgabe. Gotha: verlefts Christian Mevius, 1742. Small 8vo (17.3 cm; 6.875"). [4] ff., 280, [3] pp., lacks final blank leaf. Endter (1693–1783) was a mostly self-educated medical man who started in the humors tradition and partially embraced the new approach of the Enlightenment. Among his patients were a few minor nobles but his practice was chiefly among the middle and lower classes, and his books were written for them. The present one deals with treating gout, arthritis, and nerve-related pains. Storch (1681–1751) was a well-respected physician and 1735 he was appointed to serve as such at the Russian court; he later left Russia to become the chief military doctor in Gotha. The present work on scarlet fever contains => studies of 190 cases, then presents conclusions on causes and proposes new treatments. Provenance: Ownership inscription dated 1762 of "R.P. Eugenius Peters" on front free endpaper. Two names inked of old on title-page, one "Jacobus Cramer" and another not deciphered, with a third entry inked over. Contemporary half vellum with marbled paper sides; soiled, worn, and rubbed with loss of much paper on rear board. General age-toning, occasional faint waterstaining in some margins, title-page with small spot of paper lost at the end of that "deleted" inscription; overall, very good copies of the texts, in a solid but used binding.

Voyage De Nicolas Klimius dans Le#Monde Souterrain.

Copenhagen Jacques Preuss. 1741. First French edition, published in the same year as the Latin edition. Small 8vo. 388pp. Frontispiece portrait present, two engraved plates depicting the denizens of the subterranean world and a folding map plate showing its location. Old quarter speckled calf with black title label over speckled paper covered boards, some shelfwear and rubbing, ink stain to rear board, edges trimmed, clean, solid and robust. Red and black title page A handsome little volume.#A bizarre and important title detailing Niels Klim's journey into the underworld and his adventures therein, a satirical fantasy very much in the vein of Gulliver's Travels, albeit a trifle more gothic and lush...the picture of the Potuan denizen alone is worth the price of admission. It is notable from several points but is most widely considered to be one of the earliest science fiction novels, and likely the first to encompass the hollow earth concept as a trope. A significant and seminal work.#Interestingly the bookplate to the front pastedown is that of Nils von Hofsten of the University of Uppsala; a noted professor of Anatomy, and a Eugenecist who said things like "There is something repugnant in the fact that mentally deficient people may have children." So clearly the Hollow Earth was a preoccupation for a number of those people that would benefit from being socially ostracised, or possibly just never, ever put in a position of influence over anything more significant than organising the cutlery drawer or arranging M&M's in order of colour. A clean, attractive copy of a very scarce piece of early speculative fiction.
