      - Paris, Huart, 1741. Small 8vo (16.6 x 9.5 cm). xxiii, 361, [iii] pp. Three large folded plates, one very large folded table. Contemporary full calf. Spine with five raised bands. Compartments with rich gilt floral patterns and red morocco label with gilt title. Marbled endpapers. Edges red.l In this work the author, Francesco Serao (1702-1785), gives a detailed account of the mount Vesuvius eruption of 1737 and discussed the shape of the mountain, which, according to him, must have been different in the past, in view of the ancient lava streams outside Monte Somma. The name of the playwright Louis-Adrien Duperron de Castera (1705-1762) is the only name on the title page; he, however, was the translator. In the rear of this copy, an extract of a letter from William Hamilton, discussing the eruption of 1767, has been tipped in, as well as two folded plates showing the 1767 eruption and the phenomena then observed. Apart from these peculiar and useful additions, the book is clean, unmarked. Spine a bit rubbed, otherwise a very good copy. Ward and Carozzi, 2032. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Original watercolour and pencil studies of West Indian birds and fish.

      - Caribbean, unpublished, 1741. Three sheets (size 38 x 48 (twice) and 34 x 44 cm), of which two illustrated on both sides. All three with simple, old, cardboard frames.l A rare collection of original pre-Linnean Caribbean ornithology and ichthyology (field) sketches, on large sheets of laid paper (water mark crowned shield with a horn, and the name L. V. Gerrevink; a Dutch paper maker, active during the first half of the 18th century) most probably made by a sailor with an interest in natural history, during a voyage in the Caribbean. The plates show a number of birds, and fish, described below. Localities are mentioned for most: Cuba, Jamaica, St. Christopher (St. Kitts), Dominica, Cartageña (Colombia), and Maracaibo (Venezuela), thus four different Caribbean islands, on two harbour towns on the South American mainland coast. The first sheet is numbered 258, and has the following birds and captions on the front side (recto) 1. The Rain Bird Jam. Cub. Dom. S. Christ. 2. another sort of Rain Bird. 3. another sort of watchy pickel or Spanish Nightingale [a mocking bird; the name watchy pickel is unknown to us]. And on its verso: The Curaçao vel Gallus Indicus Carthag. Maracaibo & c [the rendering of this bird is quite accurate]. The second sheet, numbered 255, contains 1. Noctua minor ex pallida et fusca avaria Cuba [this is the Antillian nighthawk]. 2. A woodpecker one kind of Cuba. 3. The crab-catcher of Dominica / Jamaica taken in Cuba. And on the verso: 1. the watchy pickel, or Spanish Nightingale Jamaica 1741 / 257. 1741. J: Cub. et Domin. 2. The small black bird of Jamaica 1741. 3. The Banana bird of Jamaica. The third sheet is numbered 240, and contains two fish: 1. Te Mud-fish [two drawings; whole animal, lateral, and the head, ventral] 2. Parot [SIC] fish. All drawings are quite large, some life-sized, and detailed, although slightly naive, and clearly by the same hand. The numbering may suggest that these three sheets were part of a much larger collection of zoological observations, but nothing remotely similar to these sketches is known. The work is contemporary to that of Mark Catesby, but less refined. The artist was probably not a trained zoologist, but, rather, a keen amateur with a good eye for detail. Because of the presence of localities these drawings are of historical, and also zoogeographical interest. Paper of one sheet somewhat unevenly tanned, otherwise in very good condition. Churchill, 318 (water-mark).

Stadtpfarrkirche und Künstlerpfarre von Wien. 1288-1988. P. First edition. - 1741 1ed Hauber Scripta Magica Occult Witchcraft Exorcisms Devils Witches Hauber “the richest body of materials for the study on [witchcraft].” – Burr (on Hauber’s Scripta Magica) This famous work on witchcraft is one of the most important 18th-century studies on the subject. Eberhard Hauber wrote a series of 36 essays and treatises on witchcraft from 1738 through 1744, which were published in three separate tomes. This third volume, complete within itself, includes 12 parts (25-36) and includes incredible and bizarre, full and double-page engravings. This set of treatises concerns the power of the devil in the physical world. The book includes a frontispiece portrait of Balthazar Bekker, a key proponent in ending persecution for witchcraft in 17th-century Europe. The occult nature of this book deals with idolatry and magic and their importance in witchcraft and devil worship. Hauber wrote this work as a response to the number of exorcisms and devil expulsions in 18th-century Europe. Item number: #644 Price: $1500 HAUBER, Eberhard David Bibliotheca, acta et scripta magica.         Statutes and constitutions of the Devon and Exeter Hospital, at Exeter; with the rules and orders for the government and conduct of the house, &c. Published by order of a General Court of Governors, Aug. 27. 1741. being the day on which the hospital was founded.

n.p. [Exeter?] Printed in the year 1741. 4to., (2) + 25 + (5)pp., remains of old blue wrappers adhering to the blank recto of first leaf and the blank verso of final leaf, fairly recent cloth-backed marbled boards with morocco label on upper cover lettered in gilt. A fine, crisp, copy. First edition. The Devon and Exeter was a typical 18th century charitable foundation, this being its founding document. Dr. Alured Clarke (1696-1742), Church of England clergyman and benefactor, 'prebendary of Winchester and Westminster was the driving force in the movement to found a hospital at Winchester, and, after his promotion to be Dean of Exeter, he repeated his achievement with the Devon and Exeter hospital, which was opened for patients on New Year's Day, 1743.' [David Owen, English philanthropy, 1660-1960,> p.39]. The 'rules and orders for the government and conduct of the house>' make fascinating reading, some parts being undoubtedly relevant to the management of hospitals today. There are 16 specific rules for the official house-visitors, the visitors being required to visit every day before dinner and enquiry about the running of the hospital. One of the requirements (Rule no.3) was to report 'whether the patients have been well and orderly attended, by the physicians and surgeons, as well as by the apothecary, nurses, and servants'. There is a table of 20 detailed rules for the admission and discharge of patients, a table of 6 rules for the physicians, 5 rules for the surgeons, 8 rules for the house-apothecary, and 8 rules for the matron (responsible for furniture and household goods, provisions, diet-book, keys and security, names of patients, behaviour of nurses and servants, &c.). The nurses themselves were subject to 8 rules (Rule 5 stating 'that the nurses and other servants, be very diligent in complying with the orders of the matron, and their other superiors; and that they behave themselves with tenderness to the patients, and with civility and respect to all strangers.' And there were, of course, sets of rules for the in-patients, the out-patients, and the messenger and porter. At the end are supplied tables of diets (full diet, low diet, milk diet, and dry diet) for breakfast, dinner, and supper for each day of the week. * Exeter Central Library does, however, hold a 4-page pamphlet, undated, but probably 1740, being An account of the Devon and Exeter Hospital which is proposed to be erected on the plan of the County Hospital at Winchester, and supported by voluntary contributions.> Another copy is held at Newberry.

Holberg's Niels Klim is the first important fictional use of astronomer Edmond Halley's theory (suggested in a paper to account for magnetic phenomena published by Royal Society in 1692) that the Earth (and the other planets) consisted of concentric, nested spheres surrounding a small central sun, with, possibly, openings at the poles. Holberg's satire was first published in Latin to gain a wide audience, which it did. The book was never banned in Denmark, though it was unpopular among religious powers of the time. "Holberg was one of the leading scholars and playwrights of the eighteenth century, perhaps the chief literary figure in Denmark to date. Niels Klim has been translated into at least thirteen languages and published in more than sixty editions, including at least eight in English. It is in the genre of the imaginary voyage which has been so much a part of utopian writing from its very beginnings. In this case the voyage to the interior of the earth comes about when Niels Klim falls down a shaft and finds himself in a new world. He visits a number of different countries including Potu the ideal state, which expels him for suggesting that women should not hold public office. Other states are modeled on various terrestrial countries; in Martinia (France) he is honored for inventing the periwig. In primitive Quama (Russia) he becomes emperor by leading the inhabitants to victory over neighboring nations, but rebellion against his tyranny forces him to flee. His journey ends when he crawls through another hole and finds himself back in Norway ... Scholars have pointed out numerous resemblances to Gulliver's Travels, and there are, indeed, many similarities. Perhaps the chief difference is that Swift was concerned with the behavior of individuals and Holberg with that of society." - Lewis, Utopian Literature, p. 92. "Essentially a satire on European culture and institutions in the guise of an imaginary voyage. It was translated into Danish not long after the Latin publication, and in Denmark its acceptance has paralleled that of Swift's Gulliver's Travels in the English-speaking world ... Holberg's work is an obvious imitation of Swift's Gulliver's Travels, and a comparison is called for. Holberg's satire is wider in scope, more penetrating in analysis, and less local than Swift's; the peculiarly British elements in Swift are not paralleled by Scandinavian elements in Holberg, who also lacks Swift's misanthropy. In imagination and literary polish, however, Swift is superior to Holberg." - Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 1114. Aldiss and Wingrove, Trillion Year Spree, pp. 78-9. Anatomy of Wonder (1976) 1-21; (1981) 1-100; (1987) 1-50; 6-346; and 6-390; (1995) 1-50; and (2004) II-536. Clute and Nicholls (eds), The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction (1993), p. 577. Leather worn at edges, professionally rebacked to style, engraved frontispiece quite tanned on blind side and there is mild loss along the fore-edge, not affecting the image, new endpapers, a few text leaves tanned, text clean, inserted leaf with biographical note on Holberg in English, in the hand of an early owner preserved at rear. One of the three translations from the Latin original published in 1741, the others being German and Dutch translations; the work was not published in Danish or English until the following year. This French text was probably the most widely read of the eighteenth-century editions. An important, scarce edition of this seminal work. (#156352)

Tabula selenographica in qua Lunarium macularum exacta descriptio

Norimberga 1741 - Mappa lunare secondo Johannes Hevelius (sinistra) e Giovanni Battista Riccioli (destra). Questa incisione venne stampata per la prima volta nel Neuer Atlas di Homann (1707) e ristampata nel suo Atlas von hundert Charter (1712), nonché nel Grossen Atlas (1716). Striking pair of maps depicting the surface of the moon, based upon the models of Johannes Hevelius and Giovanni Battista Riccioli. The two spheres of the moon provide a comparative analysis of the topographical information and nomenclature of Riccioli and Hevelius. Between the two spheres is a model showing the phases of the moon, with the different lunar phases represented in the four corners of the image. The map is further embellished with cherubs using a telescope and Diana, the lady of the moon. In 1647 Johannes Hevelius, a brewer from Gdansk, published his Selenographia, the first treatise devoted entirely to the moon. The work included for only the second time a single map that showed all the features of the moon equally clearly--a composite view that pictured the Moon in a way it never appeared in reality, but was accurate in its placement of individual features. Hevelius was truly a remarkable man of science, who made his own lenses, constructed his own telescopes, observed the Moon on every clear night for several years, drew his observations, engraved them himself, and had the wealth to publish a sumptuous book at his own expense. In Selenographia , Hevelius presented graphical depictions of every conceivable phase of the Moon, as well as three large plates of the full Moon: the first showing the ways the full Moon actually appeared through the telescope, th second showing the way a maker of terrestrial maps might represent it (using the conventions of geographers), and the third being a composite map of all lunar features illuminated (impossibly) from the same side. It is this last map that was to be used by astronomers during lunar eclipses. Hevelius also suggested a system of nomenclature based on earthly features. Hevelius founded the science of selenography (after Selene, the goddess of the Moon) and showed astronomers how to represent heavenly bodies. All lunar maps since his time have used the convention of single illumination (although while he used morning illumination, modern maps use evening illumination after Van Langren's model). Hevelius also instituted the practice of showing the entire lunar surface visible from the Earth, which, because of librations, is greater than a hemisphere. Hevelius's nomenclature, although used in Protestant countries until the eighteenth century, was replaced by the system published in 1651 by the Jesuit astronomer Giovanni Battista Riccioli, who gave the large naked-eye spots the names of seas (Sea of Tranquillity, Sea of Storm, etc.) and the telescopic spots (now called craters) the names of philosophers and astronomers. It should be pointed out that although Riccioli wrote his Almagestum Novum in which his map appeared to combat the Copernican theory, he was evenhanded in assigning names: Copernicus and Kepler were assigned prominent craters, and even Galileo received his due. Giovanni Battista Riccioli first published his map of the moon in Almagestum nouum, published in Bologna in 1651. The Riccioli moon map is historically of great importance, as it provides the basis for the system of lunar nomenclature still in use. It is more properly referred to as the Riccioli/Grimaldi map, since the Jesuit optician Francesco Grimaldi was apparently responsible for the map itself, while fellow-Jesuit Riccioli invented the names (and wrote the book in which the map appeared). Thus the Sea of Tranquility (Mare Tranquillitatis) traversed by the Apollo astronauts acquired its name here, as Mare Tranquillitatis, as did such prominent lunar craters as Plato, Ptolemaeus, and Tycho. Copperplate with fine original hand colour, with margins, in very good condition. Whitfield, Mapping of the Heavens, pp. 93, 96-97. Tooley, R.V., Maps
