PENSILVANIA, 1742. AN ALMANACK, OR EPHEMERIS

Philadelphia: Printed and Sold by Andrew Bradford, [1741].. [32]pp. 12mo. Printed self-wrappers, stitched. Contemporary ink inscription ("Jacob Taylor") in upper margin of titlepage; contemporary ink correction on p.[27]. Cellophane tape joining signature at spine, occasional minor foxing. Else bright, clean, and very good. In a half morocco and cloth box. An almanac by Jacob Taylor, who published his important Pennsylvania almanac for the years 1700 to 1746. It is a distinct possibility that the present copy was owned and signed by Taylor, as his inscribed name on the titlepage is accompanied later in the volume by a manuscript correction to a poem ("manumated" becomes "manumitted"). Taylor took the poetry in his almanacs seriously, printing excerpts of PARADISE LOST in 1741, and composing well-received verse of his own. In addition to the calendar, this 1746 almanac contains a substantial amount of poetry; lists of courts, fairs, and Quaker meetings; and a discussion of Hannibal's oath before the gods. This he concludes with a quote from the 1739 almanac of "R. Saunders" (Benjamin Franklin's Poor Richard) on the dangers of false wit and pride in the present age, commenting favorably on Saunders, "By wicked Wit the Truth is often drown'd; Here certain Truth adorn'd with Wit is found" (p.[23]). Taylor's almanac was printed by different Philadelphia printers over time. Some were printed by Franklin, but this one was issued by Andrew Bradford, one of Franklin's rivals and the son of William Bradford, the first printer in Philadelphia. DRAKE 9634. EVANS 4818.         Historia de la provincia de la compañía de Jesus del Nuevo Reyno de Granada en la America, descripción, y relación exacta de sus gloriosas missiones en el reyno, llanos, meta, y Rio Orinoco, almas, y terreno

First edition of one of the most influential and richest sources of information on the Jesuits in Colombia. 1741. Madrid. Manuel Fernández. In folio (292 mm x 200 mm). 1  [blank] + 14 ff. + 618 + 1 ff. + folding map. Contemporary limp vellum, lacking ties, gently soiled, entirely unrestored. A fine, fresh and tall copy, last folios with damp stain on inner lower margin, last folio with paper loss away from text, scattered foxing or browning but overall excellent with the appeal of a genuine copy. First ?and only- edition of this extremely rare and important work on the Jesuit Missions in New Granada (current Colombia), including extensive information on the Orinoco. The work is rich in information regarding the labor and progresses made by the Societas Iesu, the local costumes, way of life, and the history of the region. It also includes information taken from earlier Jesuit sources, mainly those of father Gumilla, who focuses more on the Orinoco. ?... a very important chronicle of a part of America where there exists very little documentation. It is a work that, with that of Piedrahita, forms a complete history of New Granada? (Leclerc). Cassani (1673 -1750) was a Spanish Jesuit professor of mathematics and astronomy, a prolific writer and learned scholar and ultimately one of the founders of the Academia de la Lengua Española (1713); amongst his works we count the Tratado de la naturaleza y origen de los cometas (Madrid, 1737) and a part of the famed biography of the Jesuits Varones Ilustres de la Compañia de Jesus. As a Jesuit, he had access to the letters and relations from missionaries to America, which allowed him to compose this chronicle on the Jesuit exploits in Colombia. This work is ostensibly the most important and comprehensive made on the subject to the time of its publication. Illustrated with a folding map of Colombia and Venezuela, by Minguet after the map by Gumilla -published in his ?El Orinoco Ilustrado?, 1741-, which shows the locations of the full network of Jesuit missions in the region; it includes the mouth of the Orinoco River, the North of Brazil and ?La Cayana? in the Dutch settlements. Sabin, 11361. Palau, 47380. Backer - Sommervogel II, 815, 12.

Essays on physiognomy, designed to promote the knowledge and the love of mankind

Complete with all blank leaves, half-titles and directions to the binder. With more than 800 engravings, including 173 copper engraved plates and 359 text images by and after Thomas Holloway, Fuseli and others, and by William Blake. Contemporary polished calf, gilt spines, front joints a bit sensitive; interior with minor foxing and off-setting of the plates as usual, but generally a tall, clean and well-margined set in excellent condition. First English edition of Volumes I and II, with the sheets of the third volume reissued by Stockdale. The work is famous for the splendid illustrations and vignettes, including the plates by William Blake. It was a classic pseudo-scientific work, extremely influential in the history of psychiatry, and represents Lavater's account of madmen, demons, and terror. Fuseli's drawings are rendered with distinction in the engravings of Thomas Holloway, and in one instance, Gillray (see Ray, The illustrator and the book in England, 20). Lavater (1741-1801) was a German poet, mystical writer and physiognomist.

Ngt snävt skuren i nedre marginalen. Författaren dog 1778 i Stockholm

Dissertation sur la nature et la propagation du feu.Paris: Prault, 1744.

A distinguished copy of the rare first separate edition of her important memoir on fire, in which she suggested that different colors of light carried different heating power and anticipated the existence of infrared radiation. This copy with a manuscript correction and diagram in the author's hand; finely bound and presented to Durival, with a portrait of Châtelet, together with Mairan's 1741 letter attacking her theory of vis viva, and including Chatelet's response to it. (Neville, Historical Chemical Library, 268).<br/><br/> Madame Châtelet (1706-1749), an intimate friend of Voltaire, is best known in the history of science for her translation of Newton's <i>Principia</i> into French. "At the end of August 1737 Mme. du Châtelet finished an important memoir on fire (<i>Dissertation sur la nature et la propagation du feu</i>), written for a prize competition organized by the Académie des Sciences. Voltaire entered the same contest, creating for this purpose a small chemistry laboratory at Cirey, but Mme. du Châtelet succeeded in preparing her memoir and sending it to the Academy without his knowledge. The results of the competition were announced on 16 April 1738: the prize was divided among Euler and two authors of second rank; only their memoirs were to be published. However, Voltaire arranged for his memoir and that of Mme. du Châtelet to be included with the winning memoirs; the first edition-identical to the definitive edition of 1752-appeared in April 1739. In 1744 Mme. du Châtelet secured the publication of a slightly modified edition of her memoir." (DSB). <br/><br/> This copy is bound with the famous pamphlet in which Jean Jacques D'ortous De Mairan, secretary of the Academy, attacked Châtelet's ideas about 'forces vives'. Mairan attempted to patronize Du Châtelet as a woman who did not understand the mathematical subtleties the field. "Clearly he did not expect Émilie to respond - he had experience, education and the Academy of Sciences on his side, and she was merely a self-taught marquise born for life of frivolous dissipation. [But] she did respond to Mairan's open letter, and she did so with spirit. Her response [also present in this copy] included nearly fifty pages of examples and counter-arguments to refute Mariran's letter. This public war of words between Émilie and the most important man in the Academy of Sciences proved she had, indeed, 'arrived' as a scholar to be taken seriously, despite the fact that, as a women, she could not actually become a member of the Academy." (Arianrhod, Seduced by Logic, pp. 128; see also Hagengruber, Emile du Châtelet between Leibniz and Newton, pp.34-39 for a detailed discussion of the Mairan-Châtelet controversy). <br/><br/> Some copies of the main memoire (like that in the Bibliothèque nationale de France and the one in the Neville Collection of the Chemical Heritage Foundation) have a small engraved diagram slipped in between page 54 and 55. That engraving is not present in this copy but added in the author's hand on page 55 with a correction in the text. <br/><br/> Very rare: we can find just two auction records the past 50 years (Sotheby's 1969 & 1971).. 8vo (196 x 119 mm), pp [iv] [1] 2-139 [1:blank]; [1-2] 3-38 [2]; [1-2] 3-37 [1:blank] [2]. Bound in fine contemporary polished calf with gilt super ex-libris 'Durival' to front board, richly gilt spine with five raised bands and floral decorations in compartments, red morocco title label, gilt leather ex-libris of Étienne Cluzel to front paste down, and with inserted engraved portrait of Émilie Chatelet (painted by Marie Anne Leir and engraved by P.G. Langlois, 1788), inscription to title page 'Donne à Durival; Juill. 1748.', some marginal annotations and underlining to all three works in pencil, page 55 of the main dissertation with a manuscript diagram, correction in the text, and explanation in the hand of Émilie Châtelet. Very fine and fresh throughout - an exceptional copy
