Originalausgabe orientiert. Vorwort und Kommentare von Johann Christoph Gottsched. 4 Bände. 1 Frontispiz (Porträt Bayles), 4 Titelvignetten, (16), CXXVII, 736, (4); (10), 957, (3); (8), 843; (4), 727, (144) S.; Durchgehend etwas gebräunt, bzw. stockfleckig, vereinzelt gering eselsohrig, Einbände gering angestaubt. In Summe eine sehr schöne sammelwürdige Rarität. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Middle East: Augsburg, Lotter, Tobias Conrad, [1741] 1756. Copper engraved plan of Jerusalem at the time of Christ originally from Seutter's "Atlas Novus". Original old colour; verso blank The map bears the imprint of Tobias Conrad Lotter at the bottom indicating it is from his "Atlas minor. Praecipua orbis terrarum imperia,. " 1756 in which he republished maps of his father in law. An imaginary plan, drawn after Adrichomius. with illustrations of the life of Christ surrounding the city. At the bottom an extensive explanatory text entitled: "Beschreibung der Stadt Ierusalem..." Good dark impression; bright colours. Seutter, Matthäus (The Elder): 1678–1757. Seutter was an engraver, globe-maker and publisher. Born in Augsburg in 1685, the son of a goldsmith. Seutter began his studies in Nuremberg in 1697, apprenticed as an engraver to Johann Baptist Homann. in 1707 later he returned to Augsburg subsequently working in the publishing house of Jeremias Wolff in the city. He founded the Seutter publishing house and print shop in 1710, producing maps, atlases, and globes., which became a primary competitor to Homann. Very few original maps were printed there, as Augsburg at that time had no university and none of the necessary connections to the fields of mathematics or the natural sciences. Therefore Seutter copied the work of other cartographers, making his own engravings based on their models (approximately 500 pieces). His "Atlas Geographicus oder Accurate Vorstellung der ganzen Welt' appeared in 1725 with 46 maps: the "Atlas Novus" various editions in 1728, 1730, 1736, 1742; the "Grosser Atlas" in 1734 with 131 maps, and the pocket atlas "Atlas minor in 1744 with 64 maps. After Matthäus Seutter died in 1757, his son, Albrecht Karl, his son-in-law Tobias Conrad Lotter, and his business partner Johann Michael Probst ran the business for five more years. Lotter, Tobias Conrad, 1717-1777. Lotter was an engraver at his father in law's publishing house. Upon Seutter's retirement Lotter took control of the firm and republished many of his maps with minor updates and changes. In his "Atlas minor.Praecipua orbis terrarum imperia,.." he added his name as publisher; later when he had full control he would re engrave the titles inserting his own name. In time, Lotter became one of the most prominent mid 18th century map publishers . Middle East Israel Jerusalem

Chimnaji's strategy was to go for the weakest link in the chain to the strongest, thereby progressively weakening the Portuguese. After four years of war the Portuguese finally surrendered. Delineatio status Pomeraniae Suethicae.

Accesserunt mantissa monumentorum et index rerum. Greifswald & Leipzig, Joan. Jac. Weitbrecht, 1741. 4:o.

Born at the Rowdown plantation in Maryland, escaped slave William Parker led the 1851 Christiana Riot-Resistance in Pennsylvania, the first test of the Fugitive Slave Law of 1851 ? this deed, signed 110 years earlier, an Englishman sells his plantation called Rowdown to the father of Parker?first master

Manuscript Document Signed ?Brice?i> as Justice of the Provincial Court of the Province of Maryland, ?hn Galloway / Attorney in fact for / John Taillor?i> (twice) and ?muel Smith?i> and ?nry Hall?i> (thrice), 2p, 12? 14?front & verso. Scalloped at top edge. Partial separation at folds. Mouse eaten at folds affecting one pair of Smith and Hall signatures and about four words of text. On watermarked laid paper. Good condition. Indenture of land sold by John Galloway as ?rchant Attorney in fact for John Taillor Mercht in London?i> to ?lliam Brogden of Ann-Arundel County?i> for £425 sterling ?l that Tract or Parcell of Land Called Rowdown Lying in Ann Arundel County?i> This is the deed by which Rowdown, a 1200 acre plantation about 12 miles southwest of Annapolis, was sold to William Brogden (1710-1770), who had served as rector of All Hallows?arish in Anne Arundel since 1735. At the time of the death of the preacher?on, Major William Brogden (1741-1824), property inventories listed over 80 slaves. The 1825 inventory lists three children of Louisa. One was William Parker, born in 1822 on Rowdown. Carl Schoettler in his article ìDignified Definance Against Slaveryî in the May 19, 2001, edition of ìThe Baltimore Sun,î wrote about William Parker. In September 1851, in part, ìEdward Gorsuch, a son of one of Maryland's oldest families, came north in search of four runaway slaves with a posse that included his son, a nephew and a U.S. marshal. William Parker, who was born and grew up on the Rowdown Plantation ÿ led a self-defense team gathered to resist the owners and kidnappers of fugitive slaves ÿ Parker took pride in the personal strength, determination and intelligence with which he grasped his freedom. He was a natural leader. ëMy rights as a free man were, under God, secured by my own right arm,í he said.î Maryland was a slave state. Pennsylvania was a free state when the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850 was passed as part of the Compromise of 1850. Being immediately north of the Mason-Dixon line, Lancaster County was an important stop on the Underground Railway. William Parker owned a farm in the county, in Christiana, Pennsylvania. He had escaped from Rowdown in 1839 and was a member of the Lancaster Black Self-Protection Society, and was known to use violence to defend himself and the slaves who sought refuge in the area. Schoettler continues, ìTheir confrontation left Gorsuch dead, Parker and his family fleeing toward Canada and the nation a long step closer to civil war. Their clash became known as the Christiana Riot, or more recently, the Christiana Resistance. ëThe Suní at the time called it ëThe Murderous Outrage in Pennsylvania.í ìParker's personal account of the Christiana Riot-Resistance was published in the ëAtlantic Monthlyí in February and March 1866 as ëThe Freedman's Story.í The only eyewitness narrativeÿ ìWhen Gorsuch arrived at the house where Parker was sheltering the fugitives, about two miles from Christiana, he declared: ëMy property I will have or I'll breakfast in hell.í Parker ÿ had long before vowed ëto let no slaveholder take back a fugitive.í In the first days after his escape to freedom a dozen years earlier, he said, ëI formed a resolution that I would assist in liberating every one within my reach at the risk of my life.íÿ ìGorsuch ÿ had four warrants for his runaway slaves and U.S. Marshal Henry H. Kline to serve them. This was the first test of the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850, which mandated stiff penalties for marshals who did not enforce the laws for seizure of fugitive slaves and for citizens who aided runawaysÿ ìGorsuch demanded his ëpropertyí; Parker refused him. In fact, it's unclear whether even one of the Gorsuch runaways was then at the Parker house. The two men parlayed and argued, discussed and quarreled, even quoting scripture to one another, until daybreak. The marshal threatened to burn the house down. ëNone but a coward would say the like,í Parker recalled saying. ëYou can burn us but you can't take us; before I give up, you will see my ashes scattered on the earth.í His wife, Eliza Ann Elizabeth Howard Parker, sounded the horn that alerted the mutual protection society. Gunfire broke out. Gorsuch was grazed by a bulletÿ ìAfter a brief truce, during which perhaps as many as 50 African-Americans and several white men joined the fray, total chaos ensued. Edward Gorsuch was clubbed with a gun, then shot and perhaps finished off by women wielding sickles. His son, Dickinson, was severely wounded; his nephew, Joshua Gorsuch was also wounded. ëThe riot, so-called, was now entirely ended,í Parker said. Only two of his defenders had been slightly wounded. He had, in fact, led one of the most successful resistance actions against slavery before the Civil Warÿ ìNews of the Christiana affair reverberated across the nation. Seen in retrospect, much of the reaction had a prophetic quality: ëThis is the first horrible tragedy under the Fugitive Slave Law,í said the Cleveland True Democrat Ã? ëWe fear it is the beginning of a series of riots which will end as it has begun, in blood.í The Jacksonville Floridian and Journal asked, ëIs such guilt to be tolerated? Are such assassinations to be repeated? If so the sword of Civil War is already unleashed.í The Baltimore Clipper called for ëprompt retributive justice upon the heads of the wretches who have instigated and committed the bloody deed.íÃ?î On August 27, 1911, ìThe New York Timesî published a full page illustrated article headlined ìMonument Will Mark the Spot of Christiana Riot / Sixtieth Anniversary of What Some Consider the Beginning of the Civil War to be Commemorated With Special Ceremonies in the Little Town in Pennsylvania.î

Nicolai Klimii Iter Subterraneum novam telluris theoriam?

Jacob Preuss,, Copenhagen and Leipzig 1741 - First edition. The Subterranean Voyage of Nicolas Klim is one of the classics of speculative and utopian fiction, written fifteen years after Swift's Gulliver's Travels and often compared favourably with that work. It is the first fully developed novel to be set in the earth's interior, a setting which has been utilised countless times in later science fiction. Klim, a poor student, falls through a hole in the earth just outside the Norwegian town of Bergen and finds himself on the inside of the earth's crust. He lands on the planet Nazar (which orbits a sun at the centre of the earth's cavity) where he finds a nation that lives according to the laws of reason and nature. The peasantry are considered very highly and therefore are the most distinguished class in the state; many of the highest offices are held by women, who are in every way equal to the men. Nazar presents an enlightened utopia, very much in the mould of the ideals of Montesquieu and Voltaire (who Holberg admired enormously) but Klim also travels to other states where the perfect state of society is not so fully developed or is perhaps degenerate, allowing a vivid comparison of political, social and philosophical systems.Holberg (like his hero Klim) was a native of Bergen at a time when Norway and Denmark existed as a twin kingdom. He saw himself as a fully European writer and the equal of the French philosophes. The majority of his works, including the present, first appeared in Latin, the universal language. The adventures of Nicolas Klim were immediately popular and were rapidly translated into all the major European languages. 8vo (168 × 96 m), pp. [ii] 388 with engraved frontispiece, folding map and 2 plates. Fine French eighteenth-century olive morocco gilt. Upper joint just starting, but unobtrusive. Neat inscription to upper forecorner of front free endpaper ?Coll. perf. H. Drury. Harrow. 1822.? Modern bookplates of A.L. McLaughlin and Bent Juel-Jensen. An excellent copy of a work rarely found in such attractive condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

DER AUSFUHRLICHEN NACHRICHTEN VON DER KONIGLICH-GROSS-BRITANNISCHEN COLONIE SALTZBURGISCHER EMIGRANTEN IN AMERICA. [with:] [SIX ADDITIONAL CONTINUATIONS AND TWO PARTIAL ANTHOLOGIES]

Halle. 1741-1752.. Nine volumes in all, with the Tomo Chachi Mico plate appearing as the frontispiece in the first. First volume (thick quarto) in contemporary three-quarter speckled vellum and boards, seven volumes in later plain wrappers, and one volume in modern brown cloth. Tomo Chachi Mico plate in first volume trimmed close, worn on edges. Uniformly internally clean. Very good. The first volume lacks the two maps. A virtually complete collection of these vital sources for the early history of Georgia. The 1741 collected edition (after the originals issued separately in parts beginning in 1735) of the first six parts of these important annual accounts of the Salzburger settlements in Georgia, commonly known as "the Salzburger Tracts," here accompanied by six additional continuations and two partial anthologies. These settlements began when a group of German settlers from Salzburg, fleeing religious persecution at home, accepted the invitation of Gen. James Oglethorpe, the founder of Georgia, to settle there in 1734. By 1741 some twelve hundred Salzburgers were living in Georgia, and these volumes are both a history and a promotional work for further settlement. Included in the first (and most important) volume is the original relation, AUSFUHRLICHE NACHRICHT, nearly three thousand pages long, followed by the first five continuations. The six later continuations are each bound separately. "This series of NACHRICHTEN is one of the most important source works on the history of Georgia, being the contemporary accounts of the German settlements in the province..." - De Renne. Of special note in the first volume is the folding plate of the Lower Creek chief, Tomo Chachi Mico, standing majestically with his arm around the shoulder of his nephew, Tooanahowi, who is holding his clan symbol of an eagle. Tomo Chachi welcomed and was helpful to the first Georgia settlers, and accompanied Gen. Oglethorpe on a trip to London in 1734. This portrait is based on a painting executed at that time by William Verelst (the original of which is now at Winterthur). A British mezzotint artist soon produced the first print version of the portrait, which the present engraving closely copies. It is one of only a handful of life portraits of American Indians created in the 18th century, and one of only two such relating to southern tribes (the other is Cunne Shote, a Cherokee chief who visited London in 1762). Following the 1741 production, this offering includes six additional annual continuations and two anthologies. They are: 1) SIEBENTE CONTINVATION DER AUSFÜHRLICHEN NACHRICHT VON DEN SALTZBURGISCHEN EMIGRANTEN.... Halle. 1741. [52],361- 704pp. (lacking the last twelve pages) plus folding table. Largely unopened. 2) NUENTE CONTINVATION DER AUSFÜHRLICHEN NACHRICHT VON DEN SALTZBURGISCHEN EMIGRANTEN.... Halle. 1743. [4],[1015]-1270pp. 3) ZEHENTE CONTINVATION DER AUSFÜHRLICHEN NACHRICHT VON DEN SALTZBURGISCHEN EMIGRANTEN.... Halle. 1744. [24],[1771]- 1930pp., without the misnumbering of p.1802 as 8002 found in some copies. Partially unopened. 4) ELFTE CONTINVATION DER AUSFÜHRLICHEN NACHRICHT VON DEN SALTZBURGISCHEN EMIGRANTEN.... Halle. 1745. [12],[1931]- 2138pp. Partially unopened. 5) ZWÖLTE CONINVATION DER AUSFÜHRLICHEN NACHRICHT VON DEN SALTZBURGISCHEN EMIGRANTEN.... Halle. 1746. [12],[2139]- 2270pp., lacking the appended Register (eighteen leaves). 6) DER DRE YZEHENTEN CONTINVATION DERER AUSFÜHRLICHEN NACHRICHT VON DEN SALTZBURGISCHEN EMIGRANTEN.... Halle. 1749. [20],[73]-203pp. 7) DER AUSFUHRLICHEN NACHRICHTEN VON DER KONIGLICH- GROSS-BRITANNISCHEN COLONIE SALTZBURGISCHER EMIGRANTEN IN AMERICA.... Halle. 1746. [64],358,[2]pp. Intended to reprint the sixth through the twelfth continuations, only the first continuation intended for this volume is present. That being said, the numerous separate continuations listed above plus this comprise, to this point, a complete assemblage of all continuations save the one for 1742. 8) DER AUSFUHRLICHEN NACHRICHTEN VON DER KONIGLICH-GROSS-BRITANNISCHEN COLONIE SALTZBURGISCHER EMIGRANTEN IN AMERICA.... Halle. 1752. [26],30,537-770pp. Largely unopened. The last of the anthologies, intended to reprint the thirteenth through the eighteenth continuations, present here is solely the continuation for 1752. Combined with the separate 1749 continuation listed above, five continuations from this last group are lacking. Despite a few missing texts, this offering is an impressive run of the extraordinarily scarce Salzburger tracts. While it is possible the separate issues listed above were removed from anthologies, it is more likely they are the original separate issues for their respective years, and as such they are of the greatest rarity. The De Renne library possessed only the seventeenth and eighteenth continuations in the separate issue. [A set of four ornithological prints]

London: Josephus Sympson, 1741. Large folio. (16 1/2 x 20 5/16 inches). Without text (as issued). 4 copper-engraved plates by Josephus Sympson after Marmaduke Cradock, window-mounted within a modern cloth box, leather lettering-piece. A fine lively series featuring at least 16 different species of birds. Cradock was born at Somerton, near Ilchester, in Somerset in about 1660. He was apprenticed to a house painter in London, but at the end of the apprenticeship turned to painting animals, birds and still life. His success with private patrons was limited and, in the main, he produced pictures for dealers. The DNB describes his work for Josephus Sympson as being `very spirited' and notes that it was not until after his death that the 'merits of his pictures were recognised, and they rose in value'. Walpole praised some of his work, and examples are included in Lord Derby's famous collection at Knowsley and the Yale Centre for British Art. The subjects of the plates are as follows: 1. A kestrel (?) carries off a chick, whilst a cock and hen and their four remaining chicks take flight, looking on are a pea-hen (?) and a barn owl, whilst a wren and a tit squabble on a roof nearby. 2. A cock pheasant stands guard on a stump, a juvenile pheasant makes off with an ear of corn, at a stream close by two kingfishers perch, on the banks of the stream a family of ducks (a drake, the female and 4 ducklings) feed, above them a third kingfisher flies off, in the background a duck sits on her nest. 3. A pigeon stands on a block of masonry, watched by a tit, a robin and a second pigeon, a short-tailed parrot perches on a nearby branch, above a pair of lapwings. 4. A woodpecker returns to the nest-hole to be greeted by its mate, on a nearby branch three sparrows perch, to the right of them are a pair of swallows and a fourth sparrow preening itself.

London: Boreman, Thomas, 1741. Two volumes. 124 (4); 125, (3) pp. Second edition. Volume one with woodcut frontispiece and twelve full-page woodcuts; volume two with woodcut frontispiece and one full-page woodcut. Presents young readers with a history of London's landmark, spending considerable space on the animals that were once housed there and touching on its other uses since its construction in 1066. Thomas Boreman was the first English publisher of books for children. He believed that instruction for children should be accompanied by "diversion and entertainment."

Paris: for MacSwinney,, [1741] . Within mounts c.630 × 400 mm. Copper engravings with etching. Light toning overall, but otherwise very good. A rather raffish character, McSwiny made and lost "a moderate younger brother's fortune" as a theatrical impresario in London. With the failure of Handel's Teseo in 1713 he was bankrupted and forced to flee abroad. Settling in Italy he continued to act as an agent for Italian opera in London, recruiting singers and recommending operas, but also moved into the commissioning of works of art from young Italian painters. It was McSwiny's patronage that helped establish the close connection between Canaletto and England. In the 1720s he commissioned a team of Venetian and Bolognese artists, including Canaletto, Cimaroli, Creti and Ricci, to produce a series of capriccio landscapes featuring allegorical tombs celebrating great men of recent English history. The Duke of Richmond was an important patron of the enterprise, acquiring at least ten of the paintings, and in the 1730s a prospectus was issued inviting subscriptions from "the Ladies and Gentlemen of Taste of Great Britain" for a volume of engravings based on the paintings. These were finally produced in Paris in 1741 drawn by Creti's pupil Domenico Maria Fratta and employing some of the finest French engravers of the period, including Tardieu, Beauvais and Cochin. Each finely-engraved plate features a ruined classical tomb rendered in superb architectural detail within an Italianate landscape. These serve as the setting for complex allegorical scenes illustrative of the quotations from ancient authors which serve as captions. The collection was described by Cohen-De Ricci as "très rare.
