TIRION, Isaak
Amsterdam: Giovanni Battista Albrizzi, 1740. unbound. Map. Uncolored copper plate engraving. Image measures 11 x 12.75". Rarely seen in black and white, this map of the North Pole and Northern Hemisphere demonstrates geographic knowledge as of the mid-18th century. The map shows the Northeast Passage, or northern sea route, discovered by William Barentsz in 1596, as well as the islands of Nova Zembla and Spitzbergen that he also discovered. However, the corresponding region in North America, and therefore a possible Northwest Passage, remains blank, reflecting both the lack of knowledge of this area and the continued hope that such a route might be found. The North Pole itself also remains empty, as it would not be explored for another century, and California is shown as an island. The areas that the map does describe, however, are nicely detailed, and in particular New Denmark, Greenland, the rivers of North America, and the Great Wall of China. A banner across the top of the page, running behind the map, bears its title. The map is a dark impression on bright paper and is in very good condition. No chips or tears. Minor wear to original fold and slight offsetting. Giovanni Battista Albrizzi (1698-1777) was a prominent Venetian publisher of books and maps. He inherited his business from his father and was part of a family active in publishing and bookselling in Venice for 150 years. In addition, he edited a weekly bulletin, Novelle della Repubblica delle Lettere, which reviewed and commented on books published throughout Europe. Seutter, Mathaus
c1740., Augsburg. Engraved double page map, 23 1/4" x 20 1/2", hand colored, elaborate large title cartouche. Archival tape repair at centerfold in bottom margin, normal aging and browning; otherwise very good plus with a strong impression. Seutter (1678-1757) was born in Augsburg, and served as an apprentice with Homann before establishing his own firm in Augsburg in 1710. He was considered one of the most important German cartographers, but it seems that much of his work He published several atlases, and globes, but his most famous work was his "Geographical Atlas or an Accurate Depiction of the Whole World" published in 1725. This map is of the Weissenfels area in the Sachsen-Anhalt region of Germany. While the title on the map suggests a different location, a map published by Peter Schenk a few years later is almost identical, and clearly indicates Weissenfels. The map is attractive and colorful, and is decorated with a large title cartouche in the upper left corner. matthias-seuter.com. Bagrow p. 185 & 272.

(NORMANDIE). (SEUTTER).
Augsburg., Ca. 1740. Folio. 63 cm X 54 cm. Originalt kobberstikk med samtidig håndkolorering. About 1740. Folio.63 cm X 54 cm. Original copper engraving with contemporary handcolouring.. Norsk. Lite hull ved nedre marg. Med detaljkart av Jersey og Guernsey. Small hole at lower margin. With insets of Jersey and Guernsey. Matthäus Seutter was born in 1685, the son of a goldsmith in Augsburg. In 1697, Seutter began his studies in Nuremberg and subsequently worked in the publishing house of Jeremias Wolff in Augsburg. In 1710, he established his own publishing house and print shop. The Seutter publishing house produced a great number of maps, atlases, and globes. However, very few original maps were printed there, as Augsburg at that time had no university and no connection to the fields of mathematics or the natural sciences. Seutter therefore copied the work of other cartographers, making his own engravings based on their models. Over 500 maps were produced in his studio. Seutter's most well-known works are the 1725 "Geographical Atlas or an Accurate Depiction of the Whole World" ("Atlas Geographicus oder Accurate Vorstellung der ganzen Welt") with 46 maps, the 1734 "Large Atlas" ("Grosser Atlas") with 131 maps, and the 1744 pocket atlas "Small Atlas" ("Atlas minor") with 64 maps. Matthäus Seutter died in 1757. Seutter's son Albrecht Karl, his son-in-law Conrad Tobias Lotter, and his business partner Johann Michael Probst ran the printing business for five more years.
