DYCHE, THOMAS and William Pardon
London: printed for Richard Ware, 1740. Third edition, 8vo, unpaged; text in double columns; recent half calf over marbled boards, red morocco gilt-lettered spine label; some spotting throughout, else about fine. Publisher's advertisements printed on recto and verso of last leaf. Because this dictionary stressed departments not found in Bailey, Dyche & Pardon were able to grab a small, loyal share of the growing dictionary market. Their dictionary, aimed at a less educated class than Bailey's, stressed proper accentuation and pronunciation (it was the first of many dictionaries to stress pronunciation); and, anticipating Webster, suggested several improvements in spelling which were subsequently adopted ("physick" to "physic," for example). Etymology is omitted. The dictionary was begun by Dyche, a schoolmaster, who had two previous non-dictionaries to his credit, A Guide to the English Tongue (1709; 48th ed. by 1774); and, A Dictionary of all the Words Commonly Us'd in the English Tongue (1723), both of which stressed spelling and pronunciation, but gave no definitions. Of William Pardon little is known. The New General English Dictionary is, however, "so different in character from the earlier Dyche works that we are naturally tempted to visit its eccentricities on the unknown Pardon" (see Starnes & Noyes, chapt. XVII). An important edition, incorporating the names and descriptions of hundreds of English and Welsh towns, with their market-days, government, manufactures, distances from London, etc. It was partially due to this gazetteer-like entry that the work remained p … [Click Below for Full Description]

Moser, Johann Jacob.
Jena, Johann Felix Bielcke, 1740. 4to. 3 parts in 1 volume: 48, 88, 112 pp. (Bound with) II: Heckel, Christian. Historische Beschreibung der weltberühmten Vestung Königstein, worbey zugleich, zu Erläuterung derselben, etwas von der alten Burg Dohna in Meissen, gehandelt wird. Magdeburg, Gottfried Vetter, 1737. (8), 95, (1) pp. Title printed in red and black. With 2 folding engr. plates and a folding letterpress poem. Contemp. brown calf with giltstamped red label to elegantly gilt spine. All edges sprinkled in red. Important annotated edition of the 1739 Treaty of Belgrade, which ended the hostilities of the two-year Austro-Russian-Turkish War, in which the Habsburgs joined Imperial Russia in its fight against the Ottomans. With the Treaty, the Habsburgs ceded the Kingdom of Serbia with Belgrade, the southern part of the Banat of Temeswar as well as northern Bosnia to the Ottomans, and Oltenia, gained by the Treaty of Passarowitz in 1718, to Wallachia (an Ottoman subject), and set the demarcation line to the rivers Sava and Danube. - Apart from Moser's extensive introduction, this also contains the "Discours sur les différens caractères des envoyes" and the "Kurtze Historie des Passarowitzischen Frieden-Schlusses de anno 1718" and reproduces various official documents. - Slightly browned as usual. Bound after this is Christian Heckel's history of the Königstein Fortress (known as the "Saxon Bastille") near Dresden and of Dohna Castle, illustrated with two engraved plates.

Wilson, Thomas
London: J.Osborn & W.Thorn, 1740. First edition. Hardcover. fair to vg-. 12mo. (xl) (4) 248pp. Period brown leather boards, with gilt ruling along the edges of the covers. Spine with raised bands. The work is essentially a guide or handbook for missionaries regarding methods for proselytizing and converting and "civilizing" the native populations of North America (in this specific case Georgia) to Christianity. The book is dedicated to the "Honorable Trustees of the Colony of Georgia", (of which the author later became a member himself) and was instigated by James Edward Oglethorpe, founder of the colony of Georgia, and a friend of Wilson. This copy includes a period three-page inscription by a previous owner Joshua Taylor, written as prayer, dated 1764, at the front free endpapers. "If the following essay doth in any measure answer its title and design, the reader must know, that the undertaking was , through God's direction and blessing, owning to a short, but very entertaining conversation which the author, and some other gentlemen, had with the Honourable and Worthy General Oglethorp concerning the Condition, Temper, and genius of the Indians, in the neighbourhood of Georgia, and those parts of America; who as he assured us, are a tractable People, and more capable of being civilized, and of receiving instruction, and the truths of religion than we are generally made to believe". Binding with scratching and rubbing to extremities, edges and covers, including the spine. Front cover and free front endpaper, detached but present. Lacking addition title. Interior with … [Click Below for Full Description]

Le Quien, Michel.
Typographia Regia, Paris. Volume I: viii, 1448 pp. + xlix (index) + 1 folding map / Volume II: 1605 pp.+ xlx (index) 2 folding maps / Volume III: 1415 pp. + xxviii (index) + 1 folding map, Latin text, maps engraved by D’Anville, covers slightly bumped, gilt dec. spines, some wear with joints cracked and covers and edges scuffed, some browning and foxing throughout, slight waterstaining on volume II. Oriens christianus in quatuor patriarchatus digestus, in quo exhibentur Ecclesiae patriarchae caeterique praesules totius Orientis, was published posthumously (3 vols., Paris, 1740). Le Quien contemplated issuing this work as early as 1722, and had made a contract with the printer Simart (Revue de l'Orient latin, 1894, II, 190). In editing it, he used the notes of the Benedictine Sainte-Marthes, who had projected an "Orbis Christianus", and had obligingly handed him over their notes on the Orient and Africa. The "Oriens Christianus", as projected by Le Quien, was to comprise not only the hierarchy of the four Greek and Latin patriarchates of Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch, and Jerusalem, and that of the Jacobite, Melkite, Nestorian, Maronite, and Armenian patriarchates, but also the Greek and Latin texts of the various Notitiae episcopatuum, a catalogue of the Eastern and African monasteries, and also the hierarchy of the African Church. The last three parts of this gigantic project were set aside by Le Quien's literary heirs. His notes on Christian Africa and its monasteries have never been used at least in their entirety. Various attempts have been made over the years to … [Click Below for Full Description]
