Based on years of observations Cassini made as director of the Paris Observatory, it covers theories of the sun and moon, fixed stars, motion of the stars, and descriptions of the planets, including Saturn's rings and Jupiter's satellites. The tables in the second volume were so accurate that they were used by astronomers long after the book went out of print. "An ardent opponent of Sir Isaac Newton's gravitational theory, he continually defended his father's work; but he was unable to reconcile his observations with his father's theories." - Britannica. "In astronomy proper Cassini's work is vast. Besides working patiently as an observer and directing frequently effective work while head of the Paris observatory he published a great number of memoirs in the Histoire de l'Academie and two books on astronomy (1740): a collection of tables and a manual. (2), III-XXX, (2) Errata, 148 pp., many diagrams. The "Preface" and the first 18 leaves of the text with a foxing to lower margin and right corners. The "Preface" is an historical account of Newton's method "la sublime méthode", written by Buffon. Without the leaf "Extrait des Registres". ¶ The influential first French edition of Newton's important work, which constitutes the most extensive description of the mathematical method he used in his famous "Principia", the method of infinitesimals, which was already written about 1671, but not published until 1736, i.e. posthumously, with the title "Method of Fluxions and Infinite Series...".

In this work "Newton stated clearly the fundamental problem of the calculus: the relation of quantities being given, to find the relation of the fluxions of these, and conversely. In conformity with this problem and the new notation, Newton then gave examples of his method....In this book Newton introduced his characteristic notation and conceptions. He regarded his variable quantities as generated by the continuous motion of points, lines and planes, rather than as aggregates of infinitesimal elements, the view which had appeared in "De analysi"...The rate of generation Newton called a "fluxion", designating it by means of a letter with a dot over it, a "pricked letter", the quantity generates he called a "fluent".( Boyer, The History of the Calculu … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Keith, Sir William]
London: J. Mechell, 1740. [4], 28 pp, with the half title as issued. Disbound, else Very Good. Keith was familiar with North America: he was surveyor-general of the customs in Virginia, and Lieutenant-Governor of Pennsylvania. According to ESTC, this is the only edition. Keith justifies the War as necessary "for absolutely securing, for the future, the Freedom of the British Nation, in the Seas of America; without which, our Plantations Abroad can no longer subsist; and it is evident that both our Manufactures and Trade at Home, are greatly encouraged and supported by the Aid we continually receive from that Quarter." Britain has a "natural and indubitable right to Navigate in the American Seas without being Seiz'd, Searched, or Stopped under any Pretence whatsoever." A successful conclusion of the War will increase Britain's strength in the New World. England must "make an intire Conquest of some convenient Island and Port in the West-Indies, which may serve as a Key to the Navigation of those Seas, and a secure Protection to the extensive and important Trade she is obliged to carry on in those Parts." Keith suggests the island of Cuba for such a purpose. After the War, England will prosper in mutual interest with Spain. Once again, England will be "able to furnish the Spanish West-Indies with Negroes, and all Kinds of dry Goods... It would be an easy Matter for those two Nations thus united in Interest together, so to Settle the Prices and Rules of the Markets every where." ESTC T4142. Sabin 86783. John Carter Brown 612, 653.

He was also an author, who wrote about the history of the West Indies. He produced John Elphinstone's map of Scotland (1746), Geographia Scotiae (1749), and The Small English Atlas (1749) with Thomas Jefferys. The Large English Atlas (with Bowen 1749?60) was a serious attempt to cover England at large scale. In 1755 Kitchin engraved the Mitchell Map map of North AmericaHe worked for London Magazine. He produced 170 maps for London Magazine (1747?83). Kitchin was the head hydrographer for the King of England. Kitchin frequently stole the works of other cartographers, which is one reason why he created so much work as a cartographer. His book, The Present State of the West-Indies: Containing an Accurate Description of What Parts Are Possessed by the Several Powers in Europe was published in 1778 by R. Baldwin in London. Augsburg: c. 1740. Six cropped sheets measuring 145 by 95 mm, engraved and hand-colored. The panels depict the interior of the Spanish and Portuguese synagogue in Amsterdam, showing the congregation at prayer. Martin Engelbrecht was a German engraver and printseller who created "miniature theatres," where a series of engraved, cut-out cards could be inserted into a holder to create a three-dimensional scene. Engelbrecht's creations are thought to be the earliest paper theaters, a precursor to the popular accordion-fold peep shows of the nineteenth century. The Amsterdam synagogue is one of the rarer scenes in Engelbrecht's Théatre des Enfants series, and many of the finer details, such as the four delicate candlesticks in the front panel, are intact. The set is housed in the likely original folded paper envelope with the title, "Eine Synagoge" in manuscript on the front panel. (Gumuchian 3249).

sumptibus haeresum Cramer et fratrum Philibert, 1740. Due parti in un volume di cm. 37, pp. xix (1), 1-731 (1); (2) 731-1124 (80). Bel marchio tip. al frontespizio. Legatura coeva in piena pelle; dorso a 5 nervi con titoli su tass. rosso e ricchi fregi dorati agli scomparti; tagli spruzzati. Graesse e Sapori riportano altre edizioni..
