Giovanni Antonio CANAL detto "Canaletto"
Magnifica prova. Etching, circa 1740, signed at the bottom center. Excellent impression, of the second state of two, with the title written, printed on contemporary laid paper "three moons" watermark (Bromberg 11), trimmed to the platemark, small restoration to the upper-right corner, otherwise excellent conditions. The first state of this title is known in a single copy with a manuscript dedication of Canaletto's. It is part of an album containing the Canaletto engravings that belonged to Anton Maria Zanetti, now preserved at the Kupferstichkabinett in Berlin. In the same museum is also preserved a brown ink drawing that represents a fantastic composition and which can be regarded as the first idea for this title page. Magnificent example. Giampiccoli Giuliano ; Ricci Marco
Giuseppe Wagner 1740. Acquaforte e bulino di mm 310 x 426. Carta candida, spessa, fittamente vergata.Freccia con punta a cuore. "Marcus Ricci invent" a sinistra, "Y 9 Appo G. Wagner Venezia C.P.E.S." al centro, "Iulianus vero Marci Nepos sculp." a destra. Margini molto ridotti all battuta. [Click Below for Full Description]

SERMON ON KINGS AND WHORES].
KVK & WorldCat (6 copies); Picarta (5 of the same 6 copies); STCN (4 of the same 5 copies); not in Knuttel. Rare first and only Dutch edition of a sermon on the dangers of succumbing to the temptations of whores and adulteresses, first delivered in Oxford in 1740 and published by Thomas Robins in London in that year under the title, Royal folly: or, the danger of being tempted by harlots. A sermon preached at Oxford before a Friendly Society at their annual meeting. Although the only kings named in the text are the biblical Kings David and Solomon, who both succumbed to the temptations of women, and the sermon is built around Solomon's Proverbs VII:19-21, it is certainly not coincidence that it was delivered and published in England in 1740, the year King George II granted a life peerage to his mistress Amalie von Wallmoden of Hanover, creating her Countess of Yarmouth. Any English reader would certainly understand that this was the "Royal folly" of the title, even though King George is never named in the text. The sermon also minces no words in putting ninety percent of the blame on women and presenting the men as their victims. With a few marginal water stains and the edges of the leaves slightly tattered, but still in very good condition and wholly untrimmed. The wrappers are tattered at the edges and the front and back have separated at the fold of the spine, but they still reveal the pamphlet's form as it was issued.

1740. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. The de Pas de Feuquieres name was synonymous with French military during the 17th- and 18th-centuries, most-notably Isaac Manasses de Pas who was a Marquis who played an important role in the Wallenstein negotiations and led troops in various battles during the Nine Years War including the Siege of Thionville. This collection of memoires of Isaac de Feuquiere was gathered and edited by his grandson Antoine de Feuquiere who was also a notable French military officer. This account provides a look into French military tactics and were a primary source for Voltaire as he composed his 'Siècle de Louis XIV.' This rare four-volume set features 13 folding illustrations including views of the Rhine, the Spanish Netherlands, battle plans of Fleurus, Ramillies, and Malplaquet. Feuquiere also discusses military techniques and reviews for French officers. This advice comes from his experience in war and not simply from military theory. [Attributes: First Edition]

Robert Dodsley
This is a VERY RARE and historically significant book. In the 1740s a wave of mock "chronicles"--political satires written in the style of the biblical books of chronicles--was inspired by the (circa 1740-1741) publication of THIS book: The Chronicles of the Kings of England, written in the manner of the ancient Jewish Historians. This book appeared under the name Nathan ben Saddi but was the handiwork of the poet Robert Dodsley. Bookplate within front cover "from the Library of Edward M. Chamberlin," signature on front page appears to be "Jacob Kidden [or Kidder] His Book." Believed published 1740-1741 Condition: Please see photos. 4.0" x 6.75". Worn as expected from a book of this age, with binding and pages that are soiled, scuffed, stained, torn, and spotted; while the covers and binding exist, it has loose joints and pages, and has (amateur) black stitching added by a previous owner. Some pages are missing. The existing pages are iv., A2, 6-12, 18-196. Pages up to 23 (misprinted as "32") are very worn, some fragmented; good/nearly complete pages from 23 onward. Includes endpages; last page shows "Thus end the CHRONICLES of the KINGS of ENGLAND. FINIS" Dodsley was born near Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, where his father was master of the free school. He is said to have been apprenticed to a stocking-weaver in Mansfield, from whom he ran away, going into service as a footman. Profits and fame from his early literary works enabled Dodsley to establish himself with the help of his friends (Alexander Pope lent him £100) as a bookseller at the sign of Tully's Head in Pall Mall … [Click Below for Full Description]

HOMANN, Johann Baptist (1663-1724)
Homann Heirs, Nuremberg, 1740. Copper-engraved map, with full original colour, in excellent condition, on a full untrimmed sheet. A highly fascinating and attractive map that showcases the curious nature of geographical knowledge of the American northeast, as considered by one of the greatest German cartographers This very fine map, in magnificent full original colour, focuses on New England, but embraces the entire territory from Philadelphia in the south up to the St. Lawrence Valley in the north. It depicts the region as it was considered before the British government commissioned advanced surveys of the subject. The geographic portrayal of the coast of New England is quite detailed, and features extensive hydrological information off of the coast. Curiously, however, Boston Harbor is shown to be dramatically larger than its actual appearance, and Cape Cod is shown to be an island. In the interior, Lake Champlain is depicted to be dramatically east of its true location, and New York's Lake Seneca is creatively shown to be a massive sea that drains into the Hudson Valley. To the north, the portrayal of New France is equally fanciful, as "Mont Royal" Island, the site of Montreal, takes on a massive, attenuated form immediately adjacent to Lake Ontario. True to Homann's artistic signature, the map features a finely-engraved cartouche in the lower right corner that depicts American scenes of commerce and nature. One of the most celebrated cartographers of his day, Johann Baptist Homann established the most successful German publishing house of the eighteenth century. His pro … [Click Below for Full Description]

SEUTTER, Matthäus.
Augsburg, c.1740. Original colour. 495 x 565mm A very fine example. A detailed map of the Russian Empire, with an elaborate title cartouche surmounted by the portraits of the Empress Anna Ivanovna, who reigned from 1730-1740, and Anton Ulrich and his wife, Anna of Brunswick, and flanked with representatives of the subjects of the Empire paying homage and offering gifts. Anna of Brunswick (known as Anna Leopoldovna) has an interesting history, in 1739 she married Anton Ulrich (1714 - 1776), son of Ferdinand Albert, Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. On 5 October 1740 the Empress Anna adopted their new-born son Ivan and proclaimed him heir to the Russian throne. A few days after this proclamation the empress died (28 October 1740), leaving directions appointing her favourite Ernest Biren, Duke of Courland, as regent. As Biren was detested by the people, Leopoldovna had little difficulty in overthrowing him (8 November 1740), assuming the Regency and taking the title of Grand-Duchess. On the map are some interesting cartographic anomalies: Noyaya Zembla is wider than it is tall; Kamchatka reaches down to Japan; and large islands feature in the region of the Bering Strait.

FRICX, Eugène Henri.
M. van Egmond, Covens & Mortier, p. 122; IKAR (1 copy); Koeman, C & M 19 (4 copies); WorldCat (2 copies). An atlas of 24 numbered detail maps and an overview key map with the general title, presented as a conveniently portable theatre-of-war atlas "pour la commodité de Mrs. Officiers" toward the end of the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-1748). It was based on the much earlier maps of Eugène Henri Fricx or Friex (1644-1730), revised and published by his nephew George Fricx or Friex in Brussels. The maps could also be assembled to form a large wall map that would measure about 125 x 118 cm. It covers the southern parts of the Dutch Republic and the northeastern parts of what is now Belgium, covering The Hague and Leiden to Zutphen in the north and Brussels to Aix-la-Chapelle in the South. The atlas is undated, but the Newberry Library has a 1747 prospectus for it, issued by Guillaume Dheulland in Paris, who published a similar atlas of Italy with Julien in 1748 (though they did not share an address). In the present copy the maps are bound as double-page maps with both ends folded in, giving the tall and thin agenda format. The red pigment used to colour the edges appears to have browned the right-most fold of each map, and as a result several have torn along that fold. Otherwise the maps are in good condition, with a couple smaller tears only slightly affecting the image and marginal worm holes at the foot of a few maps, near the gutter. The binding shows some damage.

RICHARDSON, SAMUEL - AESOP.
London J Osborn jun 1739, 1740. 12mo, pp xxxiv, [2], 192, engraved vignette title page within border, 25 engraved plates illustrating 240 fables, as well as the life of Aesop, bound in contemporary ruled calf with raised bands, joints cracked but holding on cords to both boards, spine leather cracked and chipped at ends with slight evidence of early ower-sewing to one joint, free endpaper removed at front, title page with short repairable tear at inner gutter, no loss, plate one with tiny corner tear to blank portion, plate 2 loose and frayed at edges without loss, else occasional light soiling or stains, but generlly quite clean and sound otherwise, FIRST EDITION. a remarkably complete copy of this incredibly rare first printing of Richard's version of Aesop, his first published work after a few magazine contributed poems, and published late in 1739, a few months before Pamela appeared. Though it went through several editions, all of which are rare, this rival to Croxall and L'Estrange received little attention from Richardson scholars until the 20th century, when its importance as a 'moral' pronouncement prior to Pamela's more complex literary one was properly understood. ESTC records only three copies, the BL and Bodleian in Uk and Pierpont Morgan New York. This is necessarily a rare book in complete condition, and certainly of recognized importance in the history of children's literature. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

MAP]. DELISLE, Guillaume (1675-1726)
Amsterdam. chez Jean Covens et Corneille Mortier, libraires. c.[1740].. 45x 51.1cm., (17. 3/4" x 20. 1/8"), overall 56x 65.5cm, (22"x 25.8"), outline hand colouring, slightly toned, wide margins, fine condition. A detailed map, North Pole projection, c. 1740. An accurate depiction of the world at the time, Delisle correctly depicts California as a peninsula, though much of Eastern Asia, Russia and North America is yet unexplored. Guillaume De L'Isle (1675--1726) was a French cartographer known for his popular and accurate maps of Europe and the newly explored Americas and Africa. He is important as the first "scientific" cartographer who incorporated the most current information on exploration and topography into his maps. .
