Incisione in rame, dipinta a mano. Map taken from "Atlante Novissimo", published by Giambattista Albrizzi, circa 1740. Globe with allegorical representations of the four continents in the corners, surmounted by an armillary sphere. Striking example of Albrizzi's double hemipshere map of the World, one of the most interesting and decorative world maps to appear in a mid-18th Italian Century Atlas. An elegant example of the Italian school of commercial cartography, the art work around the map having been done by important Italian artist Giovanni Battista Piazzetta (ca. 1682-1754), whose influence can be seen in the subsequent work of Zatta and others. The cartographic content of the map, which is drawn from De l'Isle's Mappe Monde (1700), is secondary to the very beautiful, serene female figures in each corner representing the four continents. G. Batta Piaceta is shown as Inventor (left), and Guliano Giampicoli, as engraver (right). The map includes a finley executed armillary sphere, explorer's routes, unknown NW Coast of America, incomplete projections of Australia (still attached to New Guinea) and New Zealand, conjectural Asian Land mass extending toward Alaska and many other cartographic myths and misprojections. Copperplate with fine later hand colour, very good condition. 360 300mm

[JUMPING JACK].
Cf. Adams & Keene, Paper dolls, pp. 14-20; Hillier, Dolls and doll-makers, p. 45. Rare hand-coloured print for making a jumping jack in the form of a rococo woman wearing a short dress and a plumed hat, possibly intended to represent a shepherdess from the Commedia dell'arte. Rudimentary marionettes such as these with articulated limbs were in great vogue in Paris in the 1740s and 1750s and called pantins after the nearby village where they were supposedly invented. The diarist Edmond Barbier (1689-1771) wrote in his journal in 1747: "At first the Pantins were designed for children's toys; but after a time they were used to amuse the entire public. They were little figures made of pasteboard. All parts of the body were separate and were attached by strings at the back of the figure. When these strings were pulled, the arms, legs, and head were all jointed together and the Pantin could be made to dance... These silly things engrossed the attention of all of Paris, amusing everyone to such an extent that you could not go into any house in January 1747, without finding a Pantin hanging by the mantelpiece" (Hillier). D'Alembert wrote in the Encyclopédie, 24 (1778), s.v. "Pantins", that "posterity will find it difficult to believe that in France persons of a ripe age could have, in an access of vertigo that lasted far too long, amused themselves with these ridiculous toys and employed themselves in searching for them with such enthusiasm, while in other countries Pantins were relegated to children of the most tender age" (Adams).Slightly worn at the edges; somewhat browned and w … [Click Below for Full Description]

Wesley, John
S. and F. Farley, Bristol, 1740. [2],xxiii,75pp. 12mo. Bound to style in antique half calf and marbled boards. Very good. First edition of John Wesley's journal, recounting the almost two years he spent in Georgia, on his only voyage to America. Wesley was invited to become the minister of the Savannah parish in 1735 by James Oglethorpe, who had founded the colony two years previously. He arrived there with his brother Charles in early 1736. Wesley imagined that he would be primarily engaged in the conversion of Native Americans and that he would bring about the revival of a "primitive" Christianity, although he ultimately spent much of his time ministering to the different communities of European settlers. He was also responsible for bringing the first Anglican hymnal printed in America to press, the COLLECTION OF PSALMS AND HYMNS published in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1737. While he inhabited the colony, his religious beliefs were heavily influenced by a group of Moravian settlers, whose church he converted to upon his return to England in 1638. He was forced to leave the colony when his refusal to give Communion to a former romantic interest, Sophia Hopkey, resulted in legal proceedings against him in 1737. Although Wesley makes no mention of this emotional entanglement in his journal, his entries provide an important account of his religious activities with both natives and settlers during his time in America, and relate the events of his legal difficulties, which ended in mistrial and his flight to South Carolina. Also included is his own summary description of Ge … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cabreyra, Joseph de
Second edition. Cabreyra (d. 1638) was Captain of the Nossa Senhora de Belem, which wrecked off the coast of the Cape of Good Hope in 1635 whilst returning to Portugal from India. The shipwreck news was widespread, not only for the losses, but for it carried a famous passenger: Jesuit Father Jerome Lobo, who after spending over 9 nine years in Abyssinia was returning to Europe; Lobo is the author of "A short relation of the River Nile, of its source and current" and was coming to report on the failure of the Ethiopian mission and the expulsion of the missionaries. The work narrates the events prior to the event, the hardships, and arrangements carried out by Cabreyra following the shipwreck: the building of smaller vessels to carry the survivals, securing the provisions and the dispatches from the King of Portugal, the journey along the western coast of Africa towards Angola -where the nearest Portuguese port was- amongst other interesting affairs. Another edition was also published in 1636 by Craesbeck, with a different collation, priority between both hasn´t be established; this work was later included by Brito in the Historia Tragico-Maritima. Extremely rare, no copies have appeared at auction in the last 50 years. Mendelssohn, pp. 242. Payans, 222.

Very good copy. FIRST EDITION. The Elements is Cassini's most valuable contribution to astronomy. Based on years of observations Cassini made as director of the Paris Observatory, it covers theories of the sun and moon, fixed stars, motion of the stars, and descriptions of the planets, including Saturn's rings and Jupiter's satellites. The tables in the second volume were so accurate that they were used by astronomers long after the book went out of print. "An ardent opponent of Sir Isaac Newton's gravitational theory, he continually defended his father's work; but he was unable to reconcile his observations with his father's theories." - Britannica. "In astronomy proper Cassini's work is vast. Besides working patiently as an observer and directing frequently effective work while head of the Paris observatory he published a great number of memoirs in the Histoire de l'Academie and two books on astronomy (1740): a collection of tables and a manual. London: R.W. Seale delin. et sculp, n.d, 1740. Approx. 15" x 18½" (sight), matted and in a conservation frame 22" x 26" showing the whole of North America from Hudson's Straits to almost the equator, with California prominently as an island; traces opf previous folds, else fine. This particular map was published in Rapin's History of England, volume 3, translated by Nicolas Tindal. According to Wheat, despite its late publication date of 1744 (1745?), the map continues to display a number of "throwback notions" of North American geography. For instance, the map follows the geography from apocryphal accounts by Baron Louis-Armand de Lom D'Arce de Lahontan in the late 17th century. Moreover, California is shown as an island. Within California, a mountain chain is shown and two mountains are actually labeled: M. Nevada and Mt. St. Martin. Six towns are also labeled in California including Canot, St. Nicholas, St. Juan, St. Isidore, Gigante and Na Sa de la Guada. The engraver, Richard William Seale (1732-1785) was an English draughtsman and engraver who worked for a number of individuals engraving maps for atlases and other books. He worked for Henry Popple (1733), Tindal for his translation and continuation of Rapin's The History of England (1744-7), Pine and Tinney (1749), Bolton's North America (1750), Stow (1756) and The Universal Magazine (1747-63).

Bellin, Jacques Nicolas
Jacques Guerin, [Paris], 1740. 35pp. Quarto. Contemporary paper-backed boards, rebacked. Boards with slight foxing. Small tear in outer margin of first leaf (no loss). Slight age toning at outer edges, otherwise internally fresh and clean. Brief contemporary manuscript corrections in text on pp.7, 12, 21, 28, and 30. From the Library of the Earls of Macclesfield, with library shelf marks on front pastedown and front free endpaper; blind pressure stamp of the Library on the first two printed leaves. Very good. In a half morocco box. The rare first edition of Bellin's extensive account of his map of the Indian Ocean. The work includes lengthy separate analyses of the coasts of Africa from the Cape of Good Hope to the Red Sea, Madagascar and other isles in the Indian Ocean, and the coasts and isles of Asia from the Red Sea to China. In addition to these geographic locations, observations made in the regions by various explorers are cited. The cartographer, Bellin, was employed for more than five decades in the French Hydrographic Service, where he served as the first Ingénieur hydrographe de la Marine. Commissioned to develop new surveys of the coasts of France and then the known coasts of the world, these were published, respectively, as LE NEPTUNE FRANÇAIS in 1735 and the HYDROGRAPHIE FRANÇAISE between 1756 and 1765. Bellin also published a PETIT ATLAS MARITIME, with 580 charts and plans of harbors, issued in five volumes in 1764. The present work was later reprinted as one of thirty reprinted pamphlets in the author's RECUEIL DES MEMOIRES QUI ONT ÉTÉ PUBLIÉS AVEC LES CARTES … [Click Below for Full Description]

Jan Albertsz van Dam
Amsterdam, Erven van de wed. C. Stichter, 1740. The almanac consists of 32 printed pages, interleaved with a total of 42 blank pages. Twelve of the printed pages with a large illustration in the theme of the month. The blank pages were meant to write down remarks, for which they have indeed been used by a contemporary owner. Bound in full parchment, with very charming handcolored coat of arms of the city of Delft on front and back cover. Besides written remarks on the blank pages, occasionally there are some marginalia or small remarks on the printed pages as well. Parchment on spine partly gone, some thumbing, but otherwise in very good condition. *** This comptoir or office almanac was published yearly and aimed at Dutch merchants and businessmen. The author of the Almanac, Jan Albertsz. van Dam, was a mathematician, astronomer and land surveyor. From 1730 to 1746 he also was the examiner of new navigating officers for the Hoorn chamber of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). It is known that the VOC commissioned copies of this office almanac to be bound with their distinctive logo, which they handed out as presentation copies. This copy bears the coat of arms of the city of Delft, which was the location of one of the six chambers of the VOC. However, given that this copy does not also contain the VOC logo, there is probably no direct connection. Possibly this copy was a presentation copy given by the city council to important relations, or otherwise linked to the city. The notes made on the blank pages are mostly of administrative nature (payments due) which confirm that … [Click Below for Full Description]
