CARRACCI, Annibale (1560-1609). -
Roma, Roisecco, 1740. In-folio (39,2 x 26 cm.). Hiler 141. Colas 538. Lipperheide 1290. Third edition of this collection of 80 engr. plates of street vendors of Bologna, after late 16th century drawings by Carracci (first edn: Rome 1646). Contemp. calf, a little rubbed; wormhole in lower margin slightly affecting a couple of letters in two text leaves and the engr. border of the last plate, otherwise a very good, large and clean copy.

(Duveen pp. 559/560 1st ed.) ---- "One of the outstanding chemists of the eighteenth century". (Partington II p. 653) ---- "STAHL was the originator of the phlogiston theory, which dominated chemistry until the end of the eighteenth century. He took the structure of his theory from Becher. STAHL elaborated from Becher's "second earth" a new chemical principle, phlogiston, a substance representing the principle of combustibility that combined with other chemical substances to form compounds. The flaws in the phlogiston theory are obvious and it did not survive the eighteenth century ; however, it served as an important link between the older chemical concepts and the new, an attempt to modify the existing intellectual framework in order to account for new experimental observations". Newton, Isaac.
Lausanne Bousquet & Sociorum, 1740. (23 x 18 cm). - "This is one of the great classics of optics. It. expounds Newton's corpuscular or emission theory of light, and first contains his important optical discoveries in a collected form. It also gives two important mathematical treatises left out in the later ones. especially with a view to assert Newton's rights to the discovery of the calculus (about which the controversy with Leibnitz was then just preparing). The last passage of the Advertisment is of importance in connexion with the Newton-Leibnitz controversy. The phenomenon of the rainbow, first propounded by De Dominis in 1611, and later by Descartes, is here fully explained, as well as 'Newton's Rings' and other optical matters. 'Newton's 'Optics' did for light what his 'Principia' had done for gravitation, namely, placed it on a scientific basis.' - Prof. E. W. Brown, of Yale University" (Babson). - Vereinzelt gering stockfleckig und die ersten 10 Blätter papierbedingt leicht gebräunt, sonst schönes und gut erhaltenes Exemplar in einem zeitgenössischen Einband. - Wallis 182; Babson 141; vgl. The uncommon first edition, published anonymously, of this treatise comparing Roman and French institutions of government and celebrating "the progress of civilization," the author's first significant published work. Gabriel Bonnot de Mably (Abbé de Mably) was a widely read and influential philosopher and historian whose works had a profound effect on the early stages of the French Revolution, in particular the deliberations of the Estates-General. He was a close friend and patron of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, who was tutor to the children of his brother, Jean Bonnot de Mably. "He advocated the abolition of private property, which he saw as incompatible with sympathy and altruism, and conductive only to one's antisocial or egotistical instincts. Mably's writings contain a paradox: he praises elitist Plato, but also the enlightened Stoic views on natural human … [Click Below for Full Description]

The revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, and the death of his father led him to move to England; but, unable to find work there, he went on to the Netherlands where he enlisted in a company of French volunteers at Utrecht, commanded by his cousin, Daniel de Rapin. He accompanied William III to England in 1688, and during the Williamite war in Ireland he took part in the Siege of Carrickfergus and the Battle of the Boyne, and was wounded at the Siege of Limerick (1690). Soon afterwards he was promoted to captain; but in 1693 he resigned in order to become tutor to the Earl of Portland's son. After travelling with the boy, he settled with his family (he married Marie-Anne Testart in 1699) in Holland, first at the Hague, then, to save money, at Wesel, in 1707.

JUMPING JACK].
Gumuchian 6028; Metken, ill. 241; cf. Adams & Keene, Paper dolls, pp. 14-20; Hillier, Dolls and doll-makers, p. 45. Rare hand-coloured print for making a jumping jack in the form of a rococo man dressed in a waistcoat, breeches and carrying a plumed hat, possibly intended to represent the French King Louis XV. Rudimentary marionettes such as these with articulated limbs were in great vogue in Paris in the 1740s and 1750s and called pantins after the nearby village where they were supposedly invented. The diarist Edmond Barbier (1689-1771) wrote in his journal in 1747: "At first the Pantins were designed for children's toys; but after a time they were used to amuse the entire public. They were little figures made of pasteboard. All parts of the body were separate and were attached by strings at the back of the figure. When these strings were pulled, the arms, legs, and head were all jointed together and the Pantin could be made to danceĀ… These silly things engrossed the attention of all of Paris, amusing everyone to such an extent that you could not go into any house in January 1747, without finding a Pantin hanging by the mantelpiece" (Hillier). D'Alembert wrote in the Encyclopédie , 24 (1778), s.v. "Pantins", that "posterity will find it difficult to believe that in France persons of a ripe age could have, in an access of vertigo that lasted far too long, amused themselves with these ridiculous toys and employed themselves in searching for them with such enthusiasm, while in other countries Pantins were relegated to children of the most tender age" (Adams). Slightly worn a … [Click Below for Full Description]
