NOLIN JEAN BAPTISTE
Copper engraving on four sheets joined and mounted on modern linen, colored, cm 86x110.The present map was created in 1740 by Jean-Baptiste Nolin II, largely based on an earlier maps produced by his father. While the geographical depiction of most of the continent is quite assured for the time, this map is one of the eighteenth-century's most fascinating experiments in cartographic speculation. Published on the very eve of Vitus Bering's voyage to Alaska and eastern Siberia, this map shows that contemporary Europeans had no real concept of what lands might have occupied these regions. North America is thus shown as reaching down to a point just north of Japan. On the other side of the continent, an absurdly large Greenland looms closely over the northern coast of Siberia to a point past Nova Zemlya. On the main map the Mariana Islands, or Nouvelle Phillipines, adorn the Pacific in a configuration consistent with the account of the Jesuit explorer Paul Clain. Curiously, the inset in the upper right corner depicts a different rendering of the same islands as suggested in a Jesuit report of 1697. Fascinating map one of the best subjects of Nolin's legacy. Some restorations with missing part well redrawn and paper reintegration.

Benjamin Franklin
Americans were never British at all, but were merely subjects of the British King Thus the Americans were not really in rebellion against Britain, but in fighting for independence were merely seeking to establish what was by right theirs The letter’s recipient, Jonathan Willams, was Franklin’s grandnephew, and the first Superintendent of West Point and first commander of the Army Corps of Engineers Franklin also describes and sends for publication a description of his newest and among his most famous inventions: a “long arm” for reaching books in tall libraries; he also sends scientific papers he was publishing with the American Philosophical Society Prior to the Revolution, Franklin was the preeminent American in both Britain and the colonies. He represented some of the colonies in London, and was well connected to the scientific and political communities there. His political activities and writings manifested a connection to the British empire, and he supported the military campaigns against the French during the 1740's and the French and Indian War a decade later. His famous Albany Plan of 1754 would have united the colonies but also made governance from London simpler and more efficient. All of this, plus his wealth and lucrative Crown appointments, would have seemed to make him destined to be a loyalist. But in the end Franklin repudiated the mother country, embraced the infant republic, and threw his entire fame and effort into gaining independence and bringing the nations of Europe (particularly France) to the aid of that goal. The basis for the change … [Click Below for Full Description]

OORT, PIETER VAN. (After?).
1740. Titled in pencil in old handwriting (lower centre): Buceros plicatus Lath, Java (Goenong Parang). A striking and beautiful drawing of the Buceros plicatus or 'Wreathed Hornbill' (also called 'Plait-billed Hornbill', with its gibbous seven-pleated casque) which was first named by/after the English physician, naturalist and author John Latham (1740-1837), who wrote a.o. 'A General Synopsis of Birds (1781-1801)' and 'General History of Birds (1821-28)'. This hornbill was endemic to Java, Sumatra, Borneo and Malacca. The head of this hornbill (its present name: Aceros undulatus) is part of a small group of five drawings and watercolours of this species, made in West Java and presently in the collection of Naturalis, Leiden, formerly named the National Museum of Natural History. All are signed by Dutch artist Pieter van Oort (1804-1834), except this particular image, but Naturalis are confident that their watercolour is the original, and this is a (contemporary) copy by another artist. Three of the five drawings/watercolours in the Naturalis collection are dated 'Buitenzorg 1827' (During the Dutch Colonial era Buitenzorg, now called Bogor, was a hill station in the residency of Batavia, Java, 860 ft above sea-level. It was the summer residence of the governor-general of the Dutch East Indies, and its renowned botanic gardens - established in 1817 - are among the oldest and largest in the world.Pieter van Oort was born in Utrecht, The Netherlands on 10 October 1804. WOLFF, Christian
Frankfurt & Leipzig: Prostat in Officina libraria Rengeriana, 1740. Revised third ed. Title in red and black, folding plate and privilege leaf, engraved head- and tailpieces. Contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt in compartments with label, faint coat of arms on the cover (possibly the dedicatee Prince Charles I of Assia); interior browned due to paper stock. Signature of Dietrich Mahnke (see below) dated July, 1913 on fly-leaf.. The revised third edition of Wolff's notable work on rational philosophy. First published in 1728, the author here reveals his concept of philosophy as a total science, continuing Descartes' belief that all science could be deduced from simple principles. For Wolff, a system of knowledge is simply an uncontroversial given fact of human experience. Wolff's theory brought many elements of Leibniz's thought into systematic and teachable form, such as the formation of ideas, the theory of syllogism and the relation between logic, ontology and psychology. According to Kant (in the preface to the Critique of pure reason), Wolff is "the greatest of all dogmatic philosophers." Wolff's "strict method" in science, Kant explains, is predicated on "the regular ascertainment of principles, the clear determination of concepts, the attempt at strictness in proofs, and the prevention of audacious leaps in inferences." Wolff's most direct impact on the history of western philosophy resides not in any one of his own particular works, but rather on the influence he had on the German undergraduate university curriculum. This Latin version in particular broug … [Click Below for Full Description]

Sophia, a person of quality
London: for John Hawkins, 1740. First Edition. Early 20th century half-calf over marble boards with morocco and gilt label to spine. Minor shelf-wear to extremities; spine label gently rubbed. Half-title and full title pages with mild soiling to edges not affecting text. Pages 33-36 unopened; pages 37-40 partially opened. Loosely inserted 1933 sales slip from Henry Sotheran at rear. Internally an exceptionally pleasing copy of this rare and important feminist work, of which ESTC lists only 9 institutionally held copies and which has never before come to auction. Woman's Superior Excellence Over Man made history at its 1740 publication, setting a new tone for the Querelle des Femmes debates that had questioned women's humanity since the 14th century. While "Sophia" was not the first woman to join the argument, she set herself apart as a female voice asserting women's superiority. Unlike her predecessors Christine de Pisan and Ester Sowernam, Sophia did not soften her tract with assertions of natural female gentleness or modesty. Expanding on the ideas of 17th century allies James Norris and Francois Poullian de la Barre, Sophia brought the Querelle into "the 18th century, when a new radical content began to transform the thematic concerns of the old debate. Although still reactive to misogyny, feminists...felt themselves part of a new and hopeful future for women...they were animated by a notion of progress and intentional social change" (Kelly). Unabashedly, Sophia urges readers to abandon traditional assumptions written by men that posit women's inferiority. "I do not thin … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cave, Edward] as Sylvanus Urban (editor); Samuel Johnson & Tobias Smollett (contributors)
Edward Cave, London. [688pp, foldout map]: foliated [ii], viii, [1]-660, [16pp Indexes], [ii]; 12 monthly numbers plus the Supplement for 1740, stab-sewn & bound in handsomely rebacked contemporary sprinkled panel-calf, with five raised bands & gilt title on spine; 208 x 133 x 40 mm. The bound tenth annual volume of the first "magazine" (established January 1731); fourth volume of the retitled second series (1736-1833). With unsigned Preface written by Samuel Johnson (according to James Boswell) & as many as ten of the twelve installments of the contentious 'Debates in the Senate of Lilliput', possibly also by him (with the earlier two arguably by Tobias Smollett). The monthly parliamentary parody arose following the prohibition on reporting the daily debates in the House of Commons (April 1738), with "Lilliput" substituted for "Parliament", & members' names scrambled, to sidestep the injunction, beginning with the June 1738 number (Vol VIII: 283). While he is conventionally held to have written the column from 1741-3, a study of early references to Johnson (by Brack) reveals that he may have begun as early as March 1740 (following his return to London after eight months in the Midlands). The pretense however appears, based on research by Dr Don C. Shelton of Auckland (cf, his Tobias Smollet blog), to have originated with Smollett (while the usual candidate, William Guthrie, may only have recorded the proceedings covertly from the gallery). Boswell, likewise, departs both from the consensus view & Johnson's own "hasty recollection", in asserting "that his composition of the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cabreyra, Joseph de
Second edition. Cabreyra (d. 1638) was Captain of the Nossa Senhora de Belem, which wrecked off the coast of the Cape of Good Hope in 1635 whilst returning to Portugal from India. The shipwreck news was widespread, not only for the losses, but for it carried a famous passenger: Jesuit Father Jerome Lobo, who after spending over 9 nine years in Abyssinia was returning to Europe; Lobo is the author of "A short relation of the River Nile, of its source and current" and was coming to report on the failure of the Ethiopian mission and the expulsion of the missionaries. The work narrates the events prior to the event, the hardships, and arrangements carried out by Cabreyra following the shipwreck: the building of smaller vessels to carry the survivals, securing the provisions and the dispatches from the King of Portugal, the journey along the western coast of Africa towards Angola -where the nearest Portuguese port was- amongst other interesting affairs. Another edition was also published in 1636 by Craesbeck, with a different collation, priority between both hasn´t be established; this work was later included by Brito in the Historia Tragico-Maritima. Extremely rare, no copies have appeared at auction in the last 50 years. Mendelssohn, pp. 242. Payans, 222.

MARIOTTE, Edmé
Jean Neaulme, La Haye, 1740. Bibliotheca Mechanica [p. 217/218 (ed. 1717): "These two volumes contain most of Mariotte's published papers, together with the previously unpublished Traité du mouvement des pendules, which Huygens possessed in manuscript form and had giv … [Click Below for Full Description]

Venetiis Apud Jo. Baptistam Pasquali, 1740. Small 8vo, 127 x 80 mms., pp. [xl], 427 [428 - 430 Index, 432 - 432 printer's information], 15 full-page engraved plates on pages [i], [xl], [34], [68], [78], [86], [94], [102], [124], [136], [212], [232], [266], [304], and [320], and 20 engraved end-pieces, the engravings done by Marco Pitteri from designs by Giovanni Battista Piazzetta, bound in contemporary panelled red morocco, with ornate gilt roll border on each cover, spine ornately gilt in compartments, all edges; some browning to top margin of first leaf and title-page, not affecting text or plate, binding rather sad, with joints cracked and lower front joint wormed, spine rubbed and worn, top and base of spine chipped, corners worn, ex-library with library stamp on verso of first leaf and recto of last leaf. The book is notable for the very high quality of the typeface and the engravings. The text is engraved throughout by Angela Baroni (active in the 1700s), while Marco Pitteri (1703 - 1786), the engraver, had a very long association with the painter Giovanni Battista Piazzetta (1682 or 1683 - 1754). The volume is frequently and correctly described as one of the finest examples of the unity of illustration and text printed in the 18th century. In her article on this book, "A Small Masterpiece from the Eighteenth Century Publishing World," (Bulletin of the Detroit Institute of Arts, 1964) Carol E. Selby comments specifically on the engraved text by Angela Baroni: "The more than 400 pages must each have been engraved in reverse on copper plates, which being almost impossi … [Click Below for Full Description]
