HOMANN, Johann Baptist (1663-1724)
Nuremberg: Homann Heirs, 1740. Copper-engraved map, with full original colour, in excellent condition, on a full untrimmed sheet. A highly fascinating and attractive map that showcases the curious nature of geographical knowledge of the American northeast, as considered by one of the greatest German cartographers This very fine map, in magnificent full original colour, focuses on New England, but embraces the entire territory from Philadelphia in the south up to the St. Lawrence Valley in the north. It depicts the region as it was considered before the British government commissioned advanced surveys of the subject. The geographic portrayal of the coast of New England is quite detailed, and features extensive hydrological information off of the coast. Curiously, however, Boston Harbor is shown to be dramatically larger than its actual appearance, and Cape Cod is shown to be an island. In the interior, Lake Champlain is depicted to be dramatically east of its true location, and New York's Lake Seneca is creatively shown to be a massive sea that drains into the Hudson Valley. To the north, the portrayal of New France is equally fanciful, as "Mont Royal" Island, the site of Montreal, takes on a massive, attenuated form immediately adjacent to Lake Ontario. True to Homann's artistic signature, the map features a finely-engraved cartouche in the lower right corner that depicts American scenes of commerce and nature. One of the most celebrated cartographers of his day, Johann Baptist Homann established the most successful German publishing house of the eighteenth centur … [Click Below for Full Description]

SEUTTER, Matthäus.
Augsburg, c.1740. Original colour. 495 x 565mm A very fine example. A detailed map of the Russian Empire, with an elaborate title cartouche surmounted by the portraits of the Empress Anna Ivanovna, who reigned from 1730-1740, and Anton Ulrich and his wife, Anna of Brunswick, and flanked with representatives of the subjects of the Empire paying homage and offering gifts. Anna of Brunswick (known as Anna Leopoldovna) has an interesting history, in 1739 she married Anton Ulrich (1714 - 1776), son of Ferdinand Albert, Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. On 5 October 1740 the Empress Anna adopted their new-born son Ivan and proclaimed him heir to the Russian throne. A few days after this proclamation the empress died (28 October 1740), leaving directions appointing her favourite Ernest Biren, Duke of Courland, as regent. As Biren was detested by the people, Leopoldovna had little difficulty in overthrowing him (8 November 1740), assuming the Regency and taking the title of Grand-Duchess. On the map are some interesting cartographic anomalies: Noyaya Zembla is wider than it is tall; Kamchatka reaches down to Japan; and large islands feature in the region of the Bering Strait.

[SERMON ON KINGS AND WHORES].
KVK & WorldCat (6 copies); Picarta (5 of the same 6 copies); STCN (4 of the same 5 copies); not in Knuttel. Rare first and only Dutch edition of a sermon on the dangers of succumbing to the temptations of whores and adulteresses, first delivered in Oxford in 1740 and published by Thomas Robins in London in that year under the title, Royal folly: or, the danger of being tempted by harlots. A sermon preached at Oxford before a Friendly Society at their annual meeting. Although the only kings named in the text are the biblical Kings David and Solomon, who both succumbed to the temptations of women, and the sermon is built around Solomon's Proverbs VII:19-21, it is certainly not coincidence that it was delivered and published in England in 1740, the year King George II granted a life peerage to his mistress Amalie von Wallmoden of Hanover, creating her Countess of Yarmouth. Any English reader would certainly understand that this was the "Royal folly" of the title, even though King George is never named in the text. The sermon also minces no words in putting ninety percent of the blame on women and presenting the men as their victims. With a few marginal water stains and the edges of the leaves slightly tattered, but still in very good condition and wholly untrimmed. The wrappers are tattered at the edges and the front and back have separated at the fold of the spine, but they still reveal the pamphlet's form as it was issued.

FRICX, Eugène Henri.
M. van Egmond, Covens & Mortier, p. 122; IKAR (1 copy); Koeman, C & M 19 (4 copies); WorldCat (2 copies). An atlas of 24 numbered detail maps and an overview key map with the general title, presented as a conveniently portable theatre-of-war atlas "pour la commodité de Mrs. Officiers" toward the end of the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-1748). It was based on the much earlier maps of Eugène Henri Fricx or Friex (1644-1730), revised and published by his nephew George Fricx or Friex in Brussels. The maps could also be assembled to form a large wall map that would measure about 125 x 118 cm. It covers the southern parts of the Dutch Republic and the northeastern parts of what is now Belgium, covering The Hague and Leiden to Zutphen in the north and Brussels to Aix-la-Chapelle in the South. The atlas is undated, but the Newberry Library has a 1747 prospectus for it, issued by Guillaume Dheulland in Paris, who published a similar atlas of Italy with Julien in 1748 (though they did not share an address). In the present copy the maps are bound as double-page maps with both ends folded in, giving the tall and thin agenda format. The red pigment used to colour the edges appears to have browned the right-most fold of each map, and as a result several have torn along that fold. Otherwise the maps are in good condition, with a couple smaller tears only slightly affecting the image and marginal worm holes at the foot of a few maps, near the gutter. The binding shows some damage.

Though it went through several editions, all of which are rare, this rival to Croxall and L'Estrange received little attention from Richardson scholars until the 20th century, when its importance as a 'moral' pronouncement prior to Pamela's more complex literary one was properly understood. ESTC records only three copies, the BL and Bodleian in Uk and Pierpont Morgan New York. This is necessarily a rare book in complete condition, and certainly of recognized importance in the history of children's literature. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

A Turin Chez Pierre Joseph Zappata 1740 In-4 de 373-(16) pp. de table, vélin dur (reliure de l'époque). Edition originale.
