Conlon, 40:370. Poggendorff, I, 394. DSB, III, pp. 114 - 115: "Castel's ocular harpsichord helped to spread his fame much more than his scientific reputation did. - He was probably the most vociferous opponent of Newtonian science during the second quarter of the 18th century in France". De Backer / Sommervogel, II, 831, 11. Dawson 1238. Francese

        Frontespizio delle Vedute

Magnifica prova. "Etching, circa 1740, signed at the bottom center. Excellent impression, of the second state of two, with the title written, printed on contemporary laid paper ""three moons"" watermark (Bromberg 11), trimmed to the platemark, small restoration to the upper - right corner, otherwise excellent conditions. The first state of this title is known in a single copy with a manuscript dedication of Canaletto's. It is part of an album containing the Canaletto engravings that belonged to Anton Maria Zanetti, now preserved at the Kupferstichkabinett in Berlin. In the same museum is also preserved a brown ink drawing that represents a fantastic composition and which can be regarded as the first idea for this title page. Magnificent example." Latine reddidit Samuel Clarke Editio novissima.

Marci-Michaelis Bousquet & Sociorum, Lausannae & Geneva, 1740 - 11 Third Latin edition, edited by Bousquet, with a dedication to Joannes Bernoulli. This edition contains the full array of 31 querries.* "Newton’s contributions to the science of optics – his discovery of the unequal refractions of rays of different color, his theory of color, and his investigations of ‘Newton’s rings,’ to mention only a few of the most noteworthy – place him among the premier contributors to that science. Today we recognize that his work on optics offers unique rewards in its exciting, innovative conjunction of physical theory, experimental investigation, and mathematics, and in the revealing glimpse that it provides of a crucial period in the evolution of experimental science." – Alan E. Shapiro, The Optical Papers of Isaac Newton: Volume 1, (1984), p. xi. Jean-Louis Daudét (1695-1756), who made the frontispiece and title vignette, was an engraver and print publisher active in Lyon, inherited business from his father Etienne Joseph Daudet. He flourished from 1722 till his death in 1756. Thereafter the business continued by his widow in association with his son-in-law Louis Martin Roch Joubert until 1773. "Newton famously declared that it is not the business of science to make hypotheses. However, it’s well to remember that this position was formulated in the midst of a bitter dispute with Robert Hooke, who had criticized Newton’s writings on optics when they were first communicated to the Royal Society in the early 1670’s. The essence of Newton’s thesis was that white light is composed of a mixture of light of different elementary colors, ranging across the visible spectrum, which he had demonstrated by decomposing white light into its separate colors and then reassembling those components to produce white light again. However, in his description of the phenomena of color Newton originally included some remarks about his corpuscular conception of light (perhaps akin to the cogs and flywheels in terms of which James Maxwell was later to conceive of the phenomena of electromagnetism). Hooke interpreted the whole of Newton’s optical work as an attempt to legitimize this corpuscular hypothesis, and countered with various objections." "Newton quickly realized his mistake in attaching his theory of colors to any particular hypothesis on the fundamental nature of light, and immediately back- tracked, arguing that his intent had been only to describe the observable phenomena, without regard to any hypotheses as to the cause of the phenomena. Hooke (and others) continued to criticize Newton’s theory of colors by arguing against the corpuscular hypothesis, causing Newton to respond more and more angrily that he was making no hypothesis, he was describing the way things are, and not claiming to explain why they are. This was a bitter lesson for Newton and, in addition to initiating a life- long feud with Hooke, went a long way toward shaping Newton’s rhetoric about what science should be ." "The first edition of The Opticks (1704) contained only 16 queries, but when the Latin edition was published in 1706 Newton was emboldened to add seven more, which ultimately became Queries 25 through 31 when, in the second English edition, he added Queries 17 through 24. Of all these, one of the most intriguing is Query 28, which begins with the rhetorical question "Are not all Hypotheses erroneous in which Light is supposed to consist of Pression or Motion propagated through a fluid medium?" In this query Newton rejects the Cartesian idea of a material substance filling in and comprising the space between particles. Newton preferred an atomistic view, believing that all substances were comprised of hard impenetrable particles moving and interacting via innate forces in an empty space (as described further in Query 31)." – Newton’s Cosmological Queries – MathPages.

"The concentration on architecture provides an immediate sense of theater, especially in the double-page engraved sections through the Hôtel de Ville, focusing on the ballroom. The brilliant engravings, of the first quality, are all by Blondel" (Millard). "The fireworks were spectacular, presenting cannonades, flights of honorary rockets, fixed and turning suns, and an abundance of fire imitating water, in pyrotechnic 'cascades, fontaines d'artifice', and 'jets de feu' whose sparks Blondel shows streaming above the Pont Neuf . Servandoni thus initiated a new era in fireworks and theatrical pervormances in paris, aggrandizing elements already present in French fireworks to a new, and vast, scale. In these performances, neoclassical architecture and perspective scenery dominated displays, but French artificiers also offered ingenious fireworks to accompany them . Audiences also contributed tot he displays, experiencing them no longer as curious and strange marvels but more like opera or theater productions . A temple of Hymen was consturcted at the center of the Pont Neuf, an elaborate viewing stand for the royal party was installed against the facade of the Louvre Museum, and the quais were jammed with a crowd estimated at five hundred thousand . Finally, around eight, the king gave the signal: bombs went off, then cannon, then flares and firecrackers . and then every kind of firework erupted" (S. Werrett, Fireworks: Pyrotechnic Arts and Sciences in European History (2010), S. 136ff.). Arthur Lotz in 'Das Feurwerk.

[Paris: 1739 or 1740]. - Folio (22 x 17 4/8 inches). Fine folding engraved key map, and 20 double-page engraved sheets that combine to make one exceptionally large plan of Paris (ca 98 inches x 127 inches) by Claude Lucas after Louis Bretez (sheets 18 and 19, with the title cartouche, joined and folding) (a bit browned throughout). Contemporary red morocco gilt, each cover decorated with broad gilt borders of fleur-de-lis and palm frond roll tools, with large fleur-de-lis at each inner corner, and with a fine central gilt medallion of the arms of the city of Paris, the spine in ten compartments with nine raised bands, red morocco lettering-piece in one, the others decorated with fine gilt tools, all edges gilt (rebacked preserving most of the original spine, some restoration to corners). Provenance: with the ownership inscription of "Pen: Wyndham" (Henry Penruddocke Wyndham, (1736–1819)), topographer on the verso of the front free endpaper. A MAGNIFICENT AND DETAILED PLAN OF PARIS: AN ISOMETRIC PERSPECTIVE FROM THE SOUTHEAST COMPOSED OF 20 SEPARATE ENGRAVED SHEETS. The area covered by this extraordinary map includes roughly the first eleven arrondissements of modern Paris, and is a fine and beautiful representation of the capital before the transformation made to the city by Napoleon III and Haussmann. At the time of this survey France, and so Paris, was effectively being ruled, with King Louis XV’s assent, by Cardinal de Fleury. From 1726 until Fleury’s death in 1743 was the most peaceful and prosperous part of the reign of Louis XV. After the financial turmoil and human suffering at the end of the reign of Louis XIV, the rule of Fleury is seen by many historians as a period of recovery. He stabilized the French currency, balanced the budget, and made economic expansion a central goal of the government. Communications were improved with the completion of the Saint-Quentin canal (linking the Oise and Somme rivers) in 1738, later extended to the Escaut River and the Low Countries and the systematic building of a national road network. By the middle of the 18th century, France had the most modern and extensive road network in the world. In this map, avenues, streets, and individual buildings, gardens, lumber and boatyards are all shown with exquisite accuracy, as the official surveyor, Louis Bretez, was given carte blanche to enter private property to record the finest details between 1734 and 1736. He was commissioned by Turgot, as the then head of the Paris municipality, to create this stunning image of Paris, to promote to the great and the good at home and abroad. Bretez, was a member of the Academy of Painting and Sculpture and a teacher of perspective. Claude Lucas, a member of the Academy of Sciences, engraved the plates in 1836. In 1739 the prints were bound in volumes presented to the King, members of the Academy, the Municipality, and French envoys abroad, to promote the beauty and magnificence of Paris. From the distinguished library of Pen Wyndham, who as a young man travelled extensively in Europe: "with his relation Joseph Wyndham, and William Benson Earle of Salisbury, Wyndham set out on the grand tour in 1765. Theirs was not the usual party of very young men with a tutor. Pen Wyndham was by this time twenty-nine and had already demonstrated some learning as an antiquary. After leaving England in September, the party visited France, Italy, and Sicily, and returned via Geneva and the Netherlands to reach England in September 1767. Pen Wyndham's letters to his father (now in the Wiltshire and Swindon Record Office, Trowbridge) show him very critical of much of what he saw. As well as the normal litany of complaints about the inns, food, and predations of the local people, he showed the family whig traits by complaining about the despotic rulers of the lands he passed through, and compared the poverty and ignorance of their people with the happy freedoms of the British. He enjoyed seeing John Wilkes at Dijon and was in Rome at the time of Ja [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Venezia, S. Monti, 1740. 4to (275 x 195mm). pp. (16), 452, with engraved title-vignette and 8 folded engraved plates. Later half calf, spine with gilt lines and lettering, marbled sides. First edition. "Rare. One of the most important books in the early history of geology. This is the author's best known and most controversial work. Moro was interested in the fossils he found in the mountains and how they came to be there. In the 'De Crostacei e degli altri Marini Corpi' Moro speculates on the organic nature of fossils. He affirmed the theory that mountains and most islands were formed by volcanoes and thought that stratified rock was igneous in origin. His most original thoughts in this area consisted of the idea that two kinds of mountains existed, Primitive and Secondary, each of different age and composition. This theory, elaborated on by others, later became the foundation for studies in historical geology"(C. Schuh, Biobliography of minerology). "Moro was very impressed by the new volcanic islands that rose from the bay in Santorini in 1707. He was particularly struck by accounts that described how shells had been brought up from the bottom of the sea floor by the force of the eruption. It occured to Moro that perhaps this was the source of all fossil bearing beds" (W.B. Ashworth, Volcanoes, Basalt, and discovery of geological time p. 16). The title vignette shows a volcanic island, newly erupted and brimming with seashells. The English translation of the title is as follows: On shells and other marine bodies that are found on mountains.//Agassiz III, 622; Cotta 16; Geikie. Founders of geology, pp. 61-66; Zittel, p. 32.

Includes the initials of Germund Carl Cederhielms whose library was built up by four generations Cederhielms whereof Germund Ludvig (1755-1841) was the last. The library remained packed in boxes for a few decades and was finally sold 1878, 1880 and 1882. Also, from the Swedish Library of Christian Hammer with bookplate Petzholdt p459: Graesse p513.         The life and adventures of Gilbert Langley,

8vo., (4) 93 (3)pp., including a final advertisement leaf (G8), title-page rather dust-soiled, in 19th century half calf over marbled boards, spine lettered in gilt, joints worn or cracked, but a good, crisp, copy, sometime in the library of the Los Angeles Board of Law (bookplate on pastedown and faint inkstamp on covers). A veritable saga of crime, debauchery, escape, gambling, and adventures at home and abroad. Langley was finally apprehended for a highway robbery, a bungled job which netted him a mere three farthings. He was sentenced to death but the sentence was immediately commuted to transportation for seven years and he was eventually transported in December 1740.
