Dictionnaire Historique et Critique par Mr. Pierre Bayle. Cinquime dition

Amsterdam, Leiden, The Hague, Utrecht, 1740. Folio; four volumes. The editors of "Printing and the Mind of Man" say, of Bayle and his Dictionnaire (no. 155): "Bayle, a Protestant philosopher, wrote his ?Historical and Critical Encyclopedia? in his voluntary exile in Rotterdam as an anti-clerical counterblast to Morri?s work, in order, as he put it, ?to rectify Morri?s mistakes and fill the gaps.? Bayle championed reason against belief, philosophy against religion, tolerance against superstition. In a seemingly detached way he posed arguments and counter-arguments side by side, reserving his most daring insinuations to the renvois (references) which supplemented the actual entries. For over half a century, until the publication of the Encyclopdie, Bayle?s Dictionnaire dominated enlightened thinking in every part of Europe." With its four-volume Supplment: Chauffepr, Jacques George de, 1702-1740. Nouveau Dictionnaire Historique et Critique pour Servir de Supplment ou de Continuation au Dictionnaire Historique et Critique de Mr. Pierre Bayle... Amsterdam & La Haye, 1750-1756. Folio; four volumes. First edition. Chauffepr was a Protestant philosopher, a French exile in Holland much like Bayle, who extended the Dictionnaire by adding material, some translated from English, some composed by himself. There are many more entries on scientists-- Leipniz, Mersenne, Galileo, Gallois. While not of the revolutionary importance of Bayle, Chauffepr reflects awareness of the importance of science, particularly English science, during the early eighteenth century. For Chauffepr see Cioranescu 18845. NUC 104: 658. These eight volumes, former property of the Providence Public Library, are handsomely rebound with red leather spines; condition of the interior is also superb. stock#OB450.

Accurater Geographischer Entwurf der Königlichen Dänischen auf der Küste Choromandel in Ost-Indien belegenen Stadt und Vestung Trankenbar oder Tarangenbadi u Dansburg

Augsburg: [circa 1740]. Copper engraved map, full period hand colouring. 19 5/8 x 24 1/8 inches. Beautiful 18th century map of the region surrounding Tharangambadi, the chief factory of the Dutch East India Company in southwestern India. The Dutch East India Company founded Tharangambadi (aka Trankebar or Tranquebar) in the early 17th century. With the town's strategic presence on the southwest coast and protection by an impressive fort, Tharanambadi quickly became the chief factory of the Company. In the early 18th century, Protestant missionaries from Germany came to the region and established a mission, with Moravian Brethren soon to follow. These facts combined no doubt encouraged German mapmaker Matthaeus Seutter to produce this splendid map of the region. Along both sides of the map, a tremendous amount of textual information explains the various sites and settlements, by means of five symbolic and thirteen numbered references. Aesthetically, the map is extremely pleasing, and is here in full period colour. Matthaeus Seutter was one of the most important German mapmakers of the eighteenth century. Born in Augsburg in 1678, he became an apprentice to the renowned cartographer Johann Baptiste Homann in Nuremberg. In 1707 he established himself as a map publisher in Augsburg, and quickly became Homann's main rival. His business flourished and by 1731 he was appointed Geographer to the Imperial Court. He produced some of the age's most beautiful maps, atlases, and globes, all of which are famed for their cartographic detail, brilliant colour, and ornate cartouches. Not in Gole.

[Manuscript Indenture Signed]: Bennet Bard and Anthony Woodward (October 6, 1740)

(New Jersey). (1740). Manuscript Indenture Signed by Bennet Bard, made for Anthony Woodward, "Cloath Dresser," on one sheet of laid paper measuring approximately 12.25" x 15" unfolded. Dated October 6, 1740. Signed by two witnesses: James Johnston and John Bunting. Sets forth the terms and conditions of Woodward's three-year indenture to Bennet Bard, Esq., of the City of Burlington, in the Western Division of the Province of New Jersey. A few tiny tears to the corner folds, short sections of the horizontal creases have been neatly reinforced with Japanese paper on the blank verso, about very good. A Colonial era document from the noted Bard family of New Jersey and New York. Bennet Bard, the eldest son of Huguenot immigrants, inherited and acquired extensive tracts of land in Burlington county. As detailed in this document, Anthony Woodward entered into a three year contract "in Consideration of the Rents, Covenants, Conditions & Agreements herein Ascertained" to live and work at a saw mill on one of these tracts. Little else is recorded about Woodward. Bennet Bard served as Sheriff of nearby Hunterdon county in 1736, but he was removed from office after being found guilty of "divers notorious Barratrys Extortions and other malversions in his Office, and of Cruelly and unjustly Using and Abusing the Prisoners in his Custody." In 1745 and 1750 respectively, Bennet published notices in the Pennsylvania Gazette and New York Gazette, offering rewards for a "run away Mulatto Spanish Slave, named George," and run away "Irish Servant Man named, Peter Garagan." Clearly not one of the more beloved Bards (his younger brother John and his son Samuel were both celebrated physicians), but a notable Colonial personage nonetheless. New Jersey Colonial Documents pp. 532-33. .

'Paye qui Tombe', (Whoever falls off, pays) depicts a fairground tent in which competitors attempt in turn to dance along a slack rope. There is a discreet number attached to every figure, with a trilingual key. A thesis could be written on this print alone. The Young Pretender (Charles Edward) has just lost his balance, while the Emperor awaits his turn. France and Holland stand by as musicians, while the Old Pretender is peeping anxiously over the hangings of the fairground tent - thus subtly implying that he has not been prepared (or able) to pay the price of admission.« (Satirical Prints, Pamphlets and Polemics. Aberdeen, University o. Insel. Festland. (cf. Online Archive of California, OAC).
