First edition. Engraved allegorical frontispiece by Schley. 2 parts in one volumes. 1 vols. 4to. Contemporary French mottled calf, gilt spine, marbled endpapers. Upper joint starting at bottom, and apart from some minor toning, this is a lovely, unsophisticated copy in contemporary dress. Printed by Prosper Marchand, a Huguenot publisher and journalist who fled France in 1709, the work appeared at the 300th anniversary of the invention of printing. Marchand writes that he produced the book "a la sollicitation de quelques amis qui ont cru que le troisième jubile ou la troisième année séculaire, de l'imprimerie, reveilleroit infailliblement la curiosité du publique touchant l'origine de ce bel art [at the request of some friends who believed that the third jubilee, or the tercentenary of printing, would infallibly wake the public curiosity concerning the origin of this beautiful art]." The allegorical frontspiece by J.V. Schley show Minerva and Mercury, descending from Heaven, granting the gift of printing to Germany who in turn gives it to England, Holland, France, and Italy.

        L'Optique des Couleurs

1740. CASTEL, Louis B. L'Optique des Couleurs, Fond?e Sur Les Simples Observations, & Tourn?e Surtout ? La Pratique De La Peinture, De La Teinture & Des Autres Arts Coloristes. [2], xviij, 487, [9] pp. Illustrated with 2 leaves of plates. 12mo., bound in contemporary calf.Paris: Chez Briasson, 1740.First Edition. A fine copy of this important early book linking colour and music by the French mathematician Louis Castel, whose main claim to fame is the clavecin oculaire. This ocular harpsichord had sixty small coloured glass panes, each with a curtain that opened when a key was struck. A second, improved model of the harpsichord was demonstrated for a small audience in December of 1754. Pressing a key caused a small shaft to open, in turn allowing light to shine through a piece of stained glass Castel thought of color-music as akin to the lost language of paradise, where all men spoke alike, and he claimed that thanks to his instrument's capacity to paint sounds, even a deaf listener could enjoy music.

(Rostock), 1740. 8:o. (16),350,(2 blanks) pp.

1740 - Contemporary half-calf, slightly worn, with gilt spine and raised bands. Sprinkled edges. Shallow crack to spine. Some dampstaining on title and in the inner margin at the beginning and end of the textblock. A fine copy.Erik Molin (1709-55), who probably was born in Gästrikland or Uppland in the eastern part of Sweden, had a passion for pietistic ideas in his youth and in the 1730s he was often criticized by the Church Council for his writings and preachings. In 1734 the right to preach was taken from him and he became the subject of a lengthy court process. The case was put to rest until the autumn of 1735 and during this time Molin chose to disregard the fact that he had been forbidden to preach. The result was that he was asked to leave Sweden, which he refused to do. He was put into custody for four years, after which he was condemned to exile. He travelled to Rostock, Altona, Amsterdam and other cities and during this period he published several works, many of which was written in an attempt to get his exile reversed. "Die wahre und lebendige" is probably the first work that he published in exile. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Appeals were initiated by M. de Gennes de la Motte who was the Avocat des Etats de Bretagne. Of these two works OCLC lists only the BNF (with a date of "1738"); not in COPAC. FINE COPY, stitched as issued. With a contemporary MS note at head of title-page: "conflit creance", and at head of p. 3: "reglement dejuge, competence, creances."

??A Gringuenaude [i.e., Paris?]: [ca. 1740-1780]. 12mo (129 x 76 mm.). viii, 64 pp. Half-title. Expressive woodcut vignette on title (a chamber pot and its contents). Occasional light spotting. 19th-century citron morocco, sides gilt panelled, spine gilt lettered longitudinally, turn-ins gilt, gilt edges, pair of vellum flyleaves, by Koehler, with his signature on verso of front free endpaper. Provenance: Antoine-Augustin Renouard (not found in his catalogue).*** first edition of a silly scatalogical spoof, attributed to a female fairy tale writer. Farts, excrement, latrines, and their Rabelaisian synonyms provide characters' and place names and an endless supply of windy jokes in this ultimately tragic love tale. The hero Prince CroquÂ?Etron (Sh*t-eater), son of the sneaky Roi de Vesse (Silent-But-Deadly-Fart), falls in love with the lovely Princess Foirette (Diarrhea), daughter of his fatherÂ?s enemy the open-hearted Roi Petaut (Loud Fart). Abetted by King VesseÂ?s minister Constipati, whose secret liaison with one of FoiretteÂ?s governesses, Lady Clisterine (Enema) makes him take the PrinceÂ?s side, CroquÂ?Etron persuades his father to replace war with dynastic marriage, a gentler path to territorial aggrandizement. Love vanquishes all, King Petaud gives Prince CroquÂ?Etron a handsome commode chair, and the Kingdom of Caca finds peace, but the newly married lovers meet their demise at the hands of the evil Prince Gadouard (Manure), who drowns them in vats of perfume, and is punished by the king with the opposite fate, being buried alive in you know what. This clever extended dirty joke, complete with satirical preface and printing permission (dated from Laval, 1 Sept. 1701), and a final selection of verses sung at the royal marriage, is the most daring of the tales attributed to Mlle. de Lubert, daughter of a Président de Parlement, friend of the salonnière Mme de Graffigny, and dedicatee of two poems by Voltaire. Little is known of her life, other than what can be gleaned from references to her in literary correspondence of the period. Â?Mad about fairy-talesÂ? (Bull. du bibliophile), she wrote over a dozen novels, novellas, poems, and fairy tales, Â?most published between 1743 and 1756. Her tales are humourous and, at times, irreverentÂ? (Haase). This was her only literary success, if it was indeed hers. Stanford University holds a manuscript of the text, with textual variants, dated (falsely) 1716: attribution to Mlle de Lubert is questioned by the Stanford cataloguers; however, the work has been included in her literary corpus since at least the 19th century, and, if not by Mlle. de Lubert, it certainly parodies her own works and thus must date to the second half of the century. The publishing history was garbled by Gay, who describes two 18th-century editions, dating the supposed first ca. 1701, based on the facetious permission dÂ?imprimer. The only 18th-century edition located in library catalogues is this one, usually dated, again after Gay, [ca. 1790], but whose typography indicates an earlier date. Reprints appeared in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This copy, bound with his signature vellum flyleaves, may have belonged to Antoine-Augustin Renouard, but does not appear in his library catalogue. OCLC lists 3 copies in American libraries (Harvard, U. Indiana Kinsey Institute, U. Ottawa). Bibliotheca scatologica (1849), 28; Gay-Lemonnyer II:581-2; Barbier II:833 (both misdating and describing a second, ghost edition); Quérard, La France Littéraire V:382; Cioranescu, 18. s., 40961.         Lettre autographe signée.

Fortoiseau, 15. VIII. 1740. - 8 pages in-4.

1740. CASTEL, Louis B. L'Optique des Couleurs, Fondée Sur Les Simples Observations, & Tournée Surtout À La Pratique De La Peinture, De La Teinture & Des Autres Arts Coloristes. [2], xviij, 487, [9] pp. Illustrated with 2 leaves of plates. 12mo., bound in contemporary calf. Paris: Chez Briasson, 1740. First Edition.

The History of the Valorous and Witty Knight-Errant Don Quixote of the Mancha - Vols I, III, & IV (of four) - RARE

D Midwinter, W Innys et al 1740 - Hard to find later Shelton edition as we've been looking in vain for the missing Volume II of this set for many years - indeed, we've not come across any copies of this 1740 Shelton edition at all, so must be pretty rare. All three volumes are in a similar condition, original calf covers are scuffed and worn as one would expect from 275-year old books, but the bindings remain tight, thin gilt border on both covers plus numbers on spine which has five raised bands, page edges tanned, but there is very little actual foxing in any of the volumes, tho there are brown shadows on the pastedowns and feps, owner's name on top of fep on all three vols, written as Saint Richard(?) Burges, there are 17 lovely new engravings "From the French of Coyper", tho another 3 or 4 seem to have been cut out. Includes 38 pages of introductory material in Vol 1, plus a 34-page index at the back of Vol 4. We'd be asking £2000 upwards were the set complete, so price takes into account the missing volume.

A Present for a Papist: Or, the History of the Life of Pope Joan, From Her Birth to her Death. Plainly Providing Out of Printed copies and Authentic Manuscripts of Popish Writers and Others, That a Woman Called Joan was Really Pope of Rome

London: Printed for, and Sold By Olive Payne, 1740. [4], 88pp. Frontispiece engraving of 'A Woman Pope...The Whore of Babylon. Recent speckled-tan calf-backed boards. Marginal loss to B2, just touching running-title. The second appearance of an adaption of Pope Joane (London, 1610 and 1625), an earlier dialogue publication by Alexander Cooke (1564-1632). Cooke's original and this present anti-Papal monologue rely upon both early sources (such as the thirteenth-century chronicle of Martin of Troppau) and the credulity of a receptively prejudiced Protestant readership. Propagating not only 'that there was a Woman called Joan, who was Pope of Rome', but that 'being hardly warm in her papal Seat, her Piety gave place to her Leachery', conceiving the child whose birth was to cause her death 'going from the Vatican to St John Laterans in Procession'. Scarce, with ESTC recording only three copies in the UK (BL, Bodleian and the Watson Collection), and seven copies elsewhere. ESTC T121294.. Second Edition. 8vo.

Recens Edita totius Novi Belgii, in America Septentrionali siti, delineatio cura et sumtibus Matthæi Seutteri, Sac. Caes. Maj. Geographi August. Vind. Cum Gratia et Privil. S.R.I. Vicariat in part, Rheni, Sveviae, et Juris Franconici

Matthäus Seutter, Augsburg 1740 - Copper-engraved map, with full original colour, in very good condition. An excellent example of the third state of Seutter's important map of the American northeast with the famous 'Restitutio' view of New York City A fine example of one of the much-pirated Jansson-Visscher New England series of maps, first published by Visscher in 1651. The present plate was first published by Seutter in 1730, and `is the first map in the [Jansson-Visscher] series to show . the boundaries of Massachusetts, New England, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.' There are three states with Seutter's imprint: the first with no mention of his imperial appointment, and the second state mentioning that he is Imperial geographer. In the third state (as here), dating to 1740 onwards, the title has been altered again, this time to include mention of the privilege that he has been granted. After Seutter's death his son-in-law, Tobias Conrad Lotter, inserted his own name and three further states were published. To this map of the northeast is added the famous Restitutio View of New York City, which celebrated the brief return to Dutch governance from late 1672 until February of 1674. This is one of the earliest views of the city. Adorning the inset view is a very elaborate tableau in which the Emperor, Charles VI, is shown attended by Hermes, god of commerce, Athena, goddess of wisdom, and Hera, who is standing over a chest of gold coins. Behind the divine beings, dark skinned workers of the world carry nature's products to lay at the Emperor's feet. Matthäus Seutter was one of the most important German mapmakers of the eighteenth century. Born in Augsburg in 1678, he became an apprentice to the renowned cartographer Johann Baptiste Homann in Nuremberg. In 1707 he established himself as a map publisher in Augsburg, and quickly became Homann's main rival. His business flourished and by 1731 he was appointed Geographer to the Imperial Court.         DELL'ORIGINE DEI PROGRESSI E DELLO STATO ATTUALE D'OGNI LETTERATURA.

per i Fratelli ManfrediniOpera completa in 23 tomi raccolti in 11 volumi, dedicata al Nobiluomo Niccolò Puccini. Cm.19,7x12,8. Pg.5772 complessive. Buone legature in piena pergamena coeva.
