COLLINS, Capt. Greenville (1643-1694).
London: William Mount and Thomas Page, 1738. Single sheet (23 ? x 20 ? inches, full margins showing the plate mark). Fine engraved map of the Falmouth River in England, with 3 insets, and the title within an elaborate cartouche (very small separation at the top of the fold, lightly toned). THE FIRST HYDROGRAPHIC CHARTS OF GREAT BRITAIN. This map of the Falmouth River, from Falmouth and branching out to Truro and Tregony, was originally published in Greenville Collins' "Great Britain's Coasting Pilot Being a New Survey of the Sea Coast." The large cartouche shows figures performing Cornwall's two staple industries, mining and fishing, and dedicates the map to Sir Peter Killegrew, displaying his arms of the two-headed eagle. Killegrew had been a Royalist in the English Civil War and later secured a charter from King Charles II to found the new town of Falmouth, where he dedicated its church to the 'martyred' Charles I. He also owned Pendennis Castle while Collins was conducting his coastal surveys at the end of the 17th century. The castle, a highly visible landmark for sailors, was built by Henry VIII in 1540 and is marked on the map as well as illustrated in an inset captioned, "Thus Sheweth the goeing into Falmouth when Pendennis Castle beareth N:W b N: 2 Leagues." Two more insets show a map of the Helford Sound, and a coastal profile, "Thus showeth ye going into Helford when the Harboursmouth at A beareth West 2 Leagues." .

Good (please see full item description for details) Description: Two volumes, pp. [xiv], 370, [6]; 430,[ 6], with six folding plates and a folding map. Modern full-leather with marbled endpapers. Title pages clipped at upper and lower edges; damage with losses to three plates, repairs to back of map; all else very good. Le Beau was transported from France to Quebec in 1729, probably on a charge of libertinism. According to his own account, he was appointed a clerk in the Beaver Office and then chief clerk in the King's warehouses. Bored and depressed, he stole gunpowder from the warehouses and set off for New England. A warrant for his arrest was issued, but he escaped, encountering many perils (natural and human) before he reached Boston and eventually sailed for Holland. His ensuing work on his adventures in North America includes much detail on Huron, Iroquois, and Algonquin customs, but its style has been dubbed fanciful. Howes (L-167) describes the work as "a basically veracious narrative from competent authorities, though somewhat romanticised." The Dictionary of Canadian Biography argues that Le Beau "deserves credit for painting an … [Click Below for Full Description]

Two volumes. [14],370,[6]; 430,[6]pp., plus six plates (all folding) and folding map. Titlepages printed in red and black. 12mo. Contemporary calf, raised bands, spines gilt. Spine ends bit chipped, bookplates removed. Small old circular stamp on titlepage of second volume and first text page of first volume. Still a very good, clean set. Both volumes in a single cloth slipcase. In 1729, Le Beau was transported to New France from a French prison where he had been incarcerated for libertinism. He fled from Quebec to Holland in 1730, having been charged with counterfeiting and thereby facing a death sentence. Sabin describes his narrative as "a pleasant gossiping book, evidencing considerable acquaintance with the subjects described. It contains a description of the manners and customs of the Iroquois, the Hurons, the Algonquins, and other Indian tribes, derived from the author's personal experiences, although the style in which the work is written is rather that of a romance than a true narrative." Of particular interest are the chapters in which the author discusses the habits of the beaver and the religious ideas and customs of the Indians. "A description of Huron, Iroquois, and Algonquin customs, written in charming style and based, the Author claims, on observations made on a trip to America in 1729" - TPL. TPL 168. LANDE 513. Francesco Guicciardini (6 March 1483 - 22 May 1540) was an Italian historian and statesman. A friend and critic of Niccolo Machiavelli, he is considered one of the major political writers of the Italian Renaissance. In his masterpiece, The History of Italy, Guicciardini paved the way for a new style in historiography, with his use of government sources to support arguments and the realistic analysis of the people and events of his time. Guicciardini is best known as the author of the Storia d'Italia (The History of Italy), which provides a detailed account of politics in the Italian Peninsula between 1490 and 1534. Written during the last years of his life, this work contains the historian's observations collected over his entire lifetime and was a work intended for posterity. As Gilbert writes: "The History of Italy stands apart from all his writings because it was the one work which he wrote not for himself, but for the public." In the words of one of Guicciardini's severest critics, Francesco de Sanctis: "If we consider intellectual power [the Storia d'Italia] is the … [Click Below for Full Description]
