STRAHLENBERG, Philipp Johann von.
London: Brotherton, 1738. 4to. (22.7 x 17.5 cm). xii, 463 pp., with large folding map by R.W. Seale, folding woodcut map, folding table, 10 engraved plates (3 folding including 1 map), woodcut tables and illustrations in text (some full-page); inscription in ink to title, repaired small marginal tear to pp. 311-312. Contemporary calf, gilt ruled covers, spine with raised bands, gilt lettering to second compartment, gilt decorative ornaments to the others; neatly rebacked to style. An excellent copy of this celebrated study of Russia and Mongolia, complete with the large map; with fine English provenance. The author, the Swedish officer Philipp Johann Tabert von Strahlenberg (1676–1747), spent 10 years in captivity in Siberia between 1711 and 1722 following the defeat of Charles XII. During his stay in Russia he collected information and material on the languages and people of Ural and Altai stock, which became the basis for the present work. The text is of great importance, offering much first hand information - geographical, historical, and ethnographic - about Siberia and Great Tartary. The work also includes early descriptions of the linguistics of the region, with a Kalmyk vocabulary that includes translations of Mongolian words. The most important aspect of the present work, however, is von Strahlenberg's rare map depicting the Russian realm and Great Tartary, which contains extensive information about Siberia. Preparing the map, von Strahlenberg used his own latitudinal calculations as well as expedition accounts written by others. This copy is of the second English e … [Click Below for Full Description]

Franckfurt und Leipzig, Johann Leopold Montag, 1738. 69 nn. Bl., 816 S., 64 nn. Bl. 17,2 x 10,5 cm. Gutes, sammelwürdiges Exemplar [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Pitts, Joseph.
T. Longman, London 1738 - (165 x 95mm), xxiv, 259 pp + 3 pp. adverts at end, 2 folding engraved plates, contemporary calf, binding slightly rubbed, rebacked, gilt on spine and binding, Preface, Table of Contents, spine richly decorated with gilt. Pitts was forced into captivity as a slave at Algiers in 1679 when the merchant man in which he was sailing was captured by an Algerian pirate ship. In 1680, after torture led him to make a declaration of his conversion to Islam, he accompanied his master on the pilgrimage to Mecca via Cairo - of which he gives a very graphic account - Suez and Jeddah. After fifteen years captivity he succeeded in escaping but on his first night back in England was impressed for the navy, from which with difficulty he obtained his release. HIS WORK IS THE FIRST AUTHENTIC RECORD BY AN ENGLISHMAN OF THE PILGRIMAGE TO MECCA and gives a brief but sensible and consistent account of what he saw. The first edition appeared in 1704, Third edition appeared in 1738. In the preface to this edition the author complained that the second edition was published without his permission and that it contained many inaccuracies. Pitts had the advantage of being able to refer to the works of some Arab and European historians. The first geography of Arabia was published at the Medici Press in 1592, containing material written by al-Idrissi. Jean de Thevenot had also brought some of the major Arabic authorities to notice in his "Journeaux", the Arabic parts of it came out between 1674 and 1684. Pitts corrected Thevenot's description of Mecca saying " M. Thevenot is very e … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]
