He died of smallpox on January 29, 1783 after tending to sick parishoners. THE STAMP ACT. In the wake of Britain’s expensive victory in the French and Indian War, Parliament decided to tax the colonists to pay for the conflict. In 1765, the British government required that materials printed in the colonies use paper produced in London and bearing an embossed revenue stamp; this included newspapers, legal documents, etc. Additionally, Parliament stated that the tax had to be paid with British currency, not cheap colonial paper money. The colonists thought the tax was unfair and that they had no say in its passage. Street protests erupted in several states and there were political measures taken too. In October 1765, the Stamp Act Congress, attended by nine colonies, was held in New York City. Across the Atlantic, Parliament got the message about the Stamp Act, and voted to repeal it in February 1766. The Stamp Act, however, was the forerunner to the Townsend Act and other unpopular measures Parliament took, and they are regarded as perhaps the first shot in the quest for Independence. AM. 3 ¾” x 6 ¼”. 20 pgs. 1765-1766. No place [Danville, New Hampshire]. A lengthy and fiery manuscript sermon delivered by Reverend John Page of Danville, New Hampshire. CHAMBERS, Ephraim
1738. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. ENORMOUS 1st English Science Encyclopedia FOLIOS "This is a view of knowledge, as it were in stamine; exhibiting only the grand, constituent parts thereof." - Ephraim Chambers, Cyclopaedia, preface. A fine folio edition of the first general encyclopedia to be published in English! Ephraim Chambers' famous 'Cyclopaedia' would become a direct inspiration for Diderot and d'Alembert's 'Encyclopedia'. This huge two-volume set includes full page engravings, some of which are folding. Many encyclopedias written during the 18th-century and early were specific to areas of study; however, this work includes a broad array of topics, including astronomy, law, medicine, military, navigation, music and more! According to historians, this landmark work was as influential, or to some even more so, as Samuel Johnson's great Dictionary. Chambers's Cyclopedia had even a more important impact on defining cultural significance. [Attributes: First Edition]

(Petrus Artedi Tricentennial 13-14 September 2005).Linnaeus and Artedi were friends at Uppsala University, but they were also competitors. They together formed a team which only could be compared to the team of the English Willoughby and Ray, and their objective was to replace the work of the two famous Englishmen. Artedi, beeing in Amsterdam to describe the fish collection of the rich pharmacist Albertus Seba, and Linnaeus met here. A few days after their meeting, Artedi drowned during the night between September 27 and 28, 1735. Two and a half years later, Linnaeus edited Artedi's ichthyological manuscript and published it. Edwards, Jonathan
First edition printed in the United States; an important work on the process of Christian conversion happening in Northampton (Massachusetts) instigated to some extent by Edwards, a preacher of considerable talent. This is the third edition in all (published a year after the first, 1737, London), Dutch and German editions would follow. "A Faithful Narrative" describes Christian conversion in his congregations in Northampton, Massachusetts, during the New England's religious revival of the mid 18thcentury, so-called the "Great Awakening", in it he provides an account of the mundane history of the region prior to the Awakening. This work brought Edwards international recognition: George Whitefield, for example, was a prominent British minister who travelled to Northampton after the publication in order to meet with Edwards. Edwards describes God's grace by employing examples, such as Abigail Hutchinson, a young woman from his congregation, who died joyfully, outlining steps for conversion (which include the will to live righteously through their works, study the scripture, avoid sin, and explains the experience of receiving grace). The book is bound with: "Discourses on various important subjects, nearly concerning the great affair of the soul's eternal salvation" (1738, Boston, S. Kneeland and T. Green, in Queen-Street, over against the prison in Queen-Street). This volume is unfortunately lacking title (A1), small marginal hole to P2, small tear with loss of a few letters to V1, V4, and Z1, a few closed marginal tears foxing, some dampstaining. Contemporary full calf with labels to richly gilt spines. Marbled endpapers. All edges red. First and only edition. A principal source for the financial history of France; the chief work of the author. The third volume constitutes a history of the Compagnie des Indes, including a great number of facts and figures difficult to find elsewhere. The present three volumes are all that was published of a projected 40-volume complete history of French finances, compiled so as to resolve practical difficulties with the tariff. The first two volumes give a detailed account of the tariff of 1664 for exports (vol. 1) and imports (vol. 2). The author treats, alphabetically, hundreds of taxed goods, including books, clothing, drugs, gold, ivory, jewels, lace, matches, paintings, printing types, silver, wine, and weaponry. The first volume includes an introductory history of duties imposed by earlier regulations since 1304. The highly interesting third volume, with the half title "Histoire de la Compagnie des Indes avec les titres de ses concessions & privileges", deals exclusively with the French East India Company. The greater part of the volume (pp. 159-602) is taken up by sources: official documents, extracts from private memoirs, etc. The volume ends with a chronological index of facts and titles and alphabetical indexes of subjects, of geographical names (with numerous references to Asia and America), and an index of pe … [Click Below for Full Description]

MAUPERTUIS, PIERRE LOUIS.
Amsterdam, Jean Catuffe, 1738. Small 8vo. Cont. full calf. Back rubbed and somewhat worn. raised bands. leather along hinges with tears so cords are showing, but covers not loose. Spine ends worn. Title in red/black with engraved vignette. XXIV,(4),216 pp., 9 folded engraved plates and 1 engraved map (from Torneå to Kittis). ¶ This importent work settled the conflict between Earth-elangators and Earth-flatteners, between the French and the British. Newton had deduced from his theory of attraction, that a rotating earth would have to be flatter at the poles. In order to settle the question, the Academie Royale send out two expeditions, one to Peru, led by Condamine, and the other to Lapland in 1736, led by Maupertuis. The 1 degree arch in Lapland showed to be longer than the Peru-arch, and Newton's prediction was confirmed: the earth was flattened at the poles. - Voltaire praised Maupertuis for having "flattened the Earth and the Cassinis." - The work was published the same year in Paris, Amsterdam (as this) and in London.

Livres [Attributes: First Edition]
