The Historical Register for the Year 1736. As it is Acted at the New Theatre in the Hay-Market. To Which is Added a Very Merry Tragedy, Called Eurydice Hiss'd, or, A Word to the Wise

      J. Roberts, London 1737 - First authorized edition, Cross's second edition. [xvi], 48 pp. 8vo. This edition has traditionally been described as the second, following Cross, who terms it "The 2nd edition, though not so named, with many alterations." Cross's first edition, also under the J. Roberts imprint, but with 41 instead of 48 pages, is shown by ESTC to be an Edinburgh piracy by W. Cheyne. It would seem to follow that the genuine London printing is in fact the first edition, a conclusion also reached by Stephen Weissman in his Henry Fielding catalogue (Ximenes Occasional List no. 92, item 6). Regardless of which edition takes precedence, the London printing is relatively common in institutional libraries, while the Edinburgh piracy is a true rarity, with only one institutional copy located at the British Library and the last copy on the market bringing more than $9,000 at Christie's in 2015.The play, a satire on contemporary society and the Walpole government, lead to the passage of the Theatrical Licensing Act of 1737, which censored the stage and limited theatrical performances to Drury Lane, Covent Garden, and the Royal Opera House. Fielding, whose Haymarket Theatre was now outlawed, ended his dramatic career and entered the Middle Temple to begin his law studies. Cross III, p. 301 Side-stitched, in modern plain wrappers. Title and final page dustsoiled, some toning and creasing. In a custom half cloth and card folder First authorized edition, Cross's second edition. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Antique Print-RUSSIA-VITUS BERING-STRAIT-D'Anville-1737

Beerings depuis la Ville de Tobolsk jusqua'a Kamtschatka' - This is the first printed map to illustrate Vitus Bering's first voyage, representing the first broadly accurate cartography of the Russian Far East. In December 1724, Czar Peter the Great ordered the Danish-born Captain-Commander Vitus Bering (1681-1741) to lead the First Kamchatka Expedition (1725-30), in a effort to consoldate Russia's claims to regions in the Far East. Bering's party set out form St. Petersburg in January 1725, and after a grueling two-year journey, arrived in Okhotsk in Janaury 1727, on the Pacific Coast. The expedition then continued by ship to explore the massive Kamchatka Peninsula that runs down the East Coast of Siberia, and the shorelines beyond up to what is now the western side of the Bering Strait, dividing Asia from North America. As shown on the map, a series of forts, outposts and missions had already been established in the Russian Far East. While Bering's expedition was by no means the first expedition to traverse Russia, it was the first to explore the coast beyond Kamchatka and to properly map the various river systems of the eastern interior of Siberia and to chart much of the Pacific Coast. The present map extends from Tobolsk in the west, the traditional capital of Siberia, all the way eastwards to embrace the Kamchatka Peninsula and the coastlines up to the easternmost point of the Chukchi Peninsula. In between are depicted large stretches of the Ob, Irtysh, and Lena Rivers, their tributaries and Lake Baikal, the World's deepest lake. The coastline, shown from Okhotsk, Russia's gateway the the Pacific (founded 1650), up to the Bering Strait is quite impressively mapped given the difficult circumstances in which Bering operated. The First Kamchatka Expedition was deemed a great success, and the Russian court was highly impressed by the vast distances travelled and the quality of Bering's maps and written reports. Czarina Anna ordered Bering to lead a much larger multi-pronged expedition to the Far East. Although technically known as the Second Kamchatka Expedition (1732-41), this endeavor would have historic and far-reaching implications, as it would be the first expedition to discover and partially map what is now Alaska. It opened the way to the lengthy Russian presence on the Pacific Coast of North America (which would last until 1867), and the great period of exploration of the Pacific Northwest that would include the great names of Cook, Vancouver, Mackenizie and Lewis & Clark. The first edition of this map appeared in Jean-Baptiste Du Halde's Description de la China (Paris, 1735), while the present edition was issued in Paris by the eminent cartographer J.B.B. D'Anville in 1737, which features cartouches added to the map. A critical map relating the exploration of the Russian Far East and the North Pacific. Etching / engraving on hand laid paper. Description: Source unknown, to be determined.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Jean Baptiste Bourguignon D'Anville' after an anonymous artist. Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville (1697-1782) was a geographer and cartographer from France. His fame was established through his historical maps, which shows careful accurate work and are based largely on original research. Condition: Good, given age. A few small unobtrusive spots. Original folds as issued. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully. Storage location: BG-A2-23 The overall size is ca. 22.6 x 13 inch.

Venice, Antonio Bortoli, 1737. First edition of the first work to deal exclusively with birds' eggs and birds' nests, illustrating the eggs of one hundred species, classified into three groups: predatory and non-predatory land birds, and aquatic birds, each with a brief account of the nest, breeding time, and physical features of the eggs. Ginanni had created on his property in Ravenna a garden rich in exotic plants and a "piccolo Museo di cose naturali", containing many of the specimens here engraved. The continuation promised on the title-page never appeared, for the reason (published in the dedication of the author's Opere postume 1755) that "non essendomi riuscito di fare altra sufficiente Raccolta di Uova d'Uccelli".Ginanni , Giuseppe Ravenna 1692 - 1753 Ravenna Delle uova e dei nidi degli uccelli. First edition of 'the first work to deal exclusively with birds' eggs and birds' nests' (Anker), illustrating the eggs of one hundred species, classified (following Aldrovandi's model) into three groups: predatory and non-predatory land birds, and aquatic birds, each with a brief account of the nest, breeding time, and physical features of the eggs. The appended treatise, 'Osservazioni giornali sopra le Cavallette', was the product of more than two years study, and features eight engraved plates of grasshoppers. The book earned for its author an international reputation. 1 [img-2641-left-large_default] Frontispiece engraved by Silvester Pomarede after a drawing by the Ravenna painter Andrea Barbiani (220 × 150 mm platemark) Ginanni created on his property in Ravenna a garden rich in exotic plants, a library of books on natural history, and a 'piccolo Museo di cose naturali', containing many of the specimens here engraved. 2 The continuation promised on the title-page never appeared, for the reason (published in the dedication of the author's Opere postume 1755) that 'non essendomi riuscito di fare altra sufficiente Raccolta di Uova d'Uccelli'. 3 Many interesting details about the genesis of the work and its publication are embedded in correspondence between the author and the naturalist Giovanni Bianchi (Iano Planco, 1693-1775) of Rimini. 4 The book was conceived in January 1735 as 'un piccolo tometto' with illustrations after drawings to be supplied by 'Sig. Andrea Barbiani [1708-1779] Pitore buono di Ravenna'. Initially, Ginanni considered Florentine and Venetian printmakers, but advised by a relative, he searched in Rome, and by the end of March 1735 had engaged there 'Silvestro Pomarede [fl. 1736-1768] Franzese'. The programme for the frontispiece was decided immediately; 5 however work on the plates proceeded slowly: the first two matrices were completed in September 1735, and the last was delivered at the beginning of March 1736. Difficulties meanwhile had arisen about the licensing of the book and the place of printing was quickly shifted, from Rome to Venice. references Hermann August Hagen, Bibliotheca entomologica. NICE COPY. PICTURES AND MORE DETAILS ON REQUEST. [Attributes: First Edition]

Janvier 1737. & jours suivans…

3 p.l., viii, 294 pp., [26] leaves. Small 8vo, cont. mottled calf (well-rebacked with the orig. spine laid-down), spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Paris: J. Barois, 1737. The very uncommon sale catalogue of the library of Couet (1669-1736), canon of Notre Dame cathedral. He knew Latin, Greek, and Hebrew and formed a library particularly rich in history and belles-lettres. 3454 lots, priced throughout in a contemporary hand. Apart from being the sale catalogue of a distinguished collection, it has, to the best of my knowledge, the additional distinction of being the only one whose owner was assassinated. Abbé Couet (1666-1736), Vicar General to Cardinal Noailles, Archbishop of Paris, was, like his master, involved in the labyrinthine controversies concerning Jansenism and the famous Bull "Unigenitus Dei Filius." Accused of having persuaded the Cardinal of abandoning orthodox Jansenism, he was murdered in the courtyard of the Archbishopric by a hatter named Lefebvre, who was, of course, broken on the wheel alive. "Couet avait une bibliothèque importante, de 3,454 numéros, qui fut mise en vente après sa mort. Il a été mis en scène par Voltaire dans le 'Diner du comte de Boulainvilliers'."-D.B.F. Very nice copy. ❧ Grolier Club, Printed Catalogues of French Books Auctions…1643-1830, 40. Peignot, p. 91.

A dissertation concerning the present state of the high roads of England, especially of those near London. Wherein is propos'd a new method of repairing and maintaining them. Read before the Royal Society the twenty-seventh day of January and the third day of February, 1736-7.

London printed: and sold by L. Gilliver and J. Clarke; J. Stephens; and J. Roberts 1737 - 8vo., 8 engraved plates (of which one is folding), (16) + 62pp., wanting the advertisement leaf, the title-page just a little soiled, rebound in old-style marbled boards with printed spine label. A very good copy. First edition: scarce. Skempton (British Civil Engineering 1640-1840: a bibliography>. 1987], 1071. Kress 4350. Goldsmiths 7537. Hanson 5107. McCulloch p.199. [See also, e.g. Gregory, The story of the road>, pp.207-211 and Sidney & Beatrice Webb, The story of the King's highway>, 1920, pp.132-3]. This is a complete and practical treatise on road-making at a period when inland transport relied almost wholly on badly maintained roads together with a few navigable rivers, one or two early canals, and a plethora of coastal traffic. The plates are remarkably good, illustrating as they do in some detail cross sections of various geological and geophysical hazards and their proposed solutions, some illustrated with a cart or coach poised at precarious angles. Later figures illustrate some of the road problems and their solutions in and close to London (Acton Road, Grosvenor Street, Hide [sic] Park, the Parade in St. James's Park, roads in Hamstead and Highgate, and Tyburn Road). Phillips was responding to the 'general complaint' about the awful state of the roads, especially those near London. 'Those that frequently travel have a double reason to complain; first, as they pay a great deal of money to the turnpikes; and then, as they find the roads daily grow worse'. Waggoners and stage-coachmen were fed up: 'nothing but the necessity of their affairs makes them bear with so much dust, or dirt, or stops, as they are sure to meet with on the roads'. A utopian novel which was for many years attributed to Bishop Berkeley.
