First Edition. "Butler was deeply preoccupied with the prevalence of Deism, originating in Herbert of Cherbury, and he saw that this was a not unexpected outcome of the overthrow of traditional conceptions of the universe by Copernicus and the Cartesian preparation for the Newtonian concept of the rule of law [in Nature[. Although not explicit, it was to combat this trend that Butler wrote the Analogy; and it is sometimes considered that its importance died with the theory of Deism itself. The book is grudgingly admitted to be the one last memento of the controversy; but that is all. Its inclusion here indicates a contrary view. It is, indeed, one of the bulwarks of Christian apologetics and, although its effect is not always as intended, its persistent influence is undoubted. Hume, who sent Butler his Essays in 1741, ranked him with Locke and Berkeley as one of the originators in the experimental method in moral science. John Stuart Mill considered that the arguments adduced by Butler were the turning point in his father's … [Click Below for Full Description]

The Piscator Bible was the first translation of the Bible in German with a Calvinistical character, named after the translator German reformed theologian Johannes Piscator (1546-1625). The first edition was publised in the German city Herborn in 1602-1606 and it was republished over 35 times to be used in reformed churches in Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands and North America. Accademia delle Scienze
"Very rare map of the southern part of Ukraine, with an explanatory key A-N in lower right. One of five maps published by Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg for use by Russian army during Russian-Turkish war started in 1735. Bagrow thinks they are based on some French maps. All these maps are huge step back comparing with Beauplan. When the maps have been send for review to the front line, one of the officers replied: ""Maps are totally erroneous and have nothing to do with real topography and distances, and therefore any improvement is impossible"". Unfortunately publishers in Western Europe have not seen this review, and the maps were widely copied in Germany and Netherlands for about next thirty years. Copperplate with fine hand colour, trimmed to the platemark, Elaborate cartouche on upper right corner, small repaired area at lower right corner, generally in very good conditions." Moderate browning and some edgewear, vertical and horizontal fold lines, partial split with a few tiny chips along central horizontal fold. An interesting item. * A partially printed deed for the purchase of a sixty-third part of a new township, in middle Massachusetts, on the "Easterly side of the Connecticut River between Northfield and Fort Dummer called Willard town or Arlington." The buyer was a savvy 33 year old rising star among Boston merchants, Thomas Hancock, who started in the book trade, expanded into importing and exporting, and later who became one of Boston's wealthiest men. When his health failed he passed his business and fortune to his nephew and ward, future Founding Father John Hancock. The date was only one year after the announcement of the cessation of hostilities in the Wabanaki-New England War by Massachusetts Lieutenant Governor Dummer, after whom the Fort was named (the area included the Western area of fighting). It was sold to him by Joseph Blanchard, Dunstable, [now New Hampshire] who a year earlier was a lieutenant in the New Hampshire Militia in the war. It is also signed and recorded by the great-grandson of Springfield's founder William Pynchon also named William Pynchon. Roubaud : ""M. With the armorial bookplate, wax seal and signature of Charles Craigie dated 1740. Alexander Pope was an 18th century English poet best known for his satirical verse and for his translation of Homer. Famous for his use of the heroic couplet, he is the third most quoted writer in the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations after Shakespeare and Tennyson. Historically, Pope enjoyed popularity in his lifetime and this interest was revived in the 20th century. Lord Byron identified Pope as one of his chief influences, however Pope was not wholly popular during the Romantic movement. His poetry was appreciated in the 20th century for its peppering of historical references to people and places of his time, giving a broader understanding of the past. EULER, Leonhard.
Petersburg: Academy of Sciences, 1736. First edition of "Euler's famous work on mechanics in which he introduced the use of analytical methods instead of the geometrical methods of Newton and his followers" (Timoshenko, p. 29). Mechanica won the praise of many leading scientists of the time: Johann Bernoulli said of the work that "it does honour to Euler's genius and acumen," while Lagrange in his own Mécanique analytique acknowledges Euler's mechanics to be "the first great work where Analysis has been applied to the science of motion." "In an introduction to the Mechanica Euler outlined a large program of studies embracing every branch of science. The distinguishing feature of Euler's investigations in mechanics as compared to those of his predecessors is the systematic and successful application of analysis. Previously the methods of mechanics had been mostly synthetic and geometrical; they demanded too individual an approach to separate problems. Euler was the first to appreciate the importance of introducing uniform analytic methods into mechanics, thus enabling the problems to be solved in a clear and direct way. Euler's concept is manifest in both the introduction and the very title of the book, Mechanica sive Motus Scientia analytice exposita. "This first large work on mechanics was devoted to the kinematics and dynamics of a point-mass. The first volume deals with the free motion of a point-mass in a vacuum and in a resisting medium; the section on the motion of a point-mass under a force directed to a fixed center is a brilliant analytical reformulation of the cor … [Click Below for Full Description]
