RADICATI, Alberto (1698-1737)
A Rotterdam, chez la veuve Thomas Johnson et fils 1736. . X,14,[2],15-384p. Somewhat later vellum, red edges. Long bio-bibliographical manuscript note in French to front free endpaper. Very mild browning in the beginning. First edition. Radicati was a free-thinker deeply influenced by Spinoza. An Italian nobleman he was exiled from Italy for his attacks on the political power of the church. He fled to England but after the publication of his defence of the right to suicide and euthanasia Philosophical dissertation upon death' (1732) fled to Holland.'Steeped in Machiavelli, Sarpi, and Bayle, Radicati also at some point discovered Spinoza, who became the prime influence on the further elaboration and growing radicalism of his ideas on society and politics, as well as in philosophy and religion. He was entirely at one with Spinoza in regarding 'democratical' government 'the most ancient and agreeable to the natural and free condition of men' (Jonathan I. Israel, Radical enlightenment', p.68-69). The last part contains a translation of Jonathan Swift's infamous satirical Modest proposal for preventing the children of the poor people from being a burthen to their parents or country'.New editions appeared in 1749 (probably a title-edition of the present) and 1760.*Bamberger 339. Not in Van der Linde, Wolf or SB. [Attributes: First Edition]

[London and elsewhere: Various imprints], 1736-1745, 1793-1829. Two Sammelband Volumes. 19th-century plum cloth; gilt spine titling. Approx. 8½ x 6½ inches, some pamphlets smaller. 23 Pamphlets. Several illustration plates, including some in color + scattered text illustrations. Bookplate and sporadic ownership inscriptions of William Orde-Powlett, "Lord Bolton," 2nd Baron Bolton (1782-1850). Spines faded, but with bright gilt; some pamphlets trimmed with minor loses; overall, very good. Between these two volumes are twenty-three titles, either unrecorded or (if in American institutions) thinly-held. One title worth mentioning, an anomaly of the group, is a rare pamphlet concerning the famous musicians and dwarfs Nanette Stocker, and of John Hauptmann who exhibited themselves for their diminutive size and became as famous in England as Tom Thumb would later become in America. Contents are as follow: Volume 1 1. Remarks on the Rev. Christopher Wyvill's Late Advertisement, Address, & Speeches at York, in a Letter to the Worthy and Loyal Freeholders of Yorkshire. By a Freeholder of Hang-West... [York?]: np, MDCCXCVI [1796]. [2], 18pp. ESTC: T221800 (2 copies: St. Patrick's Coll. Lib., Maynooth and York Minster Lib.). 2. 1736. One of Boston's Wealthiest Men Acquires Land [Deed of Sale]. [Hancock, Thomas (1703-1764)]. [Blanchard, Joseph (1704-1758)]. To All the People to Whom These Presents Shall Come, Greeting, Know Ye.... May 4, 1789. 15" x 9-3/4" part-printed document, inscribed in neat hand, docketed on verso. Moderate browning and some edgewear, vertical and horizontal fold lines, partial split with a few tiny chips along central horizontal fold. An interesting item. * A partially printed deed for the purchase of a sixty-third part of a new township, in middle Massachusetts, on the "Easterly side of the Connecticut River between Northfield and Fort Dummer called Willard town or Arlington." The buyer was a savvy 33 year old rising star among Boston merchants, Thomas Hancock, who started in the book trade, expanded into importing and exporting, and later who became one of Boston's wealthiest men. When his health failed he passed his business and fortune to his nephew and ward, future Founding Father John Hancock. The date was only one year after the announcement of the cessation of hostilities in the Wabanaki-New England War by Massachusetts Lieutenant Governor Dummer, after whom the Fort was named (the area included the Western area of fighting). It was sold to him by Joseph Blanchard, Dunstable, [now New Hampshire] who a year earlier was a lieutenant in the New Hampshire Militia in the war. It is also signed and recorded by the great-grandson of Springfield's founder William Pynchon also named William Pynchon. London : printed for the author, and for Joseph Ames, and Peter Thompson; and sold by J. Osborn, at the Golden Ball in Pater-Noster-Row, M.DCC.XXXVI. [1736]. Modern half calf binding with marbled boards. The spine with raised bands and a contrasting label. Library stamp to title verso and blind stamp to two leaves. Quarto. This second edition is greatly expanded with 85 pages of additional text including a glossary of the Thanet dialect. Heard has made annotations to a small number of text pages and plates. His annotations all relate to genealogy and include a few illustrations of shields. There are some pencil annotations and drawings which appear to be his preliminary sketches as he has written or drawn over some of these neatly in ink. Heard has added a further 8 pages of genealogical notes at the end of the text and continued the pagination to page 133. At the beginning of this section he notes in the margin "Taken in 1767 JHLr", and at the end "28 Sepr. 1776. JHN" proudly referring to his position as Lancaster Herald and then as Norroy Herald. Frankfurt, 1736. Mit gestoch. Portrait. 2 Bll., 122 S. Pappband d. Zt. Weller II, 500. April d. - Etwas berieben, sonst sehr gutes Exemplar! Some of these latter accounts were appended to Brito's original in a multi-volume 1904-1909 edition of the História prepared by Gabriel Pereira. The original title of Brito's collection was História trágico-marítima, em que se escrevem chronologicamente os naufragios que tiveram as naus de Portugal, depois que se poz em exercício a Navegação da Índia, published in Lisbon by the Off. da Congregação do Oratório, volume I in 1735 (4° de XVI-479 pages.) and volume II in 1736 (4° de XVI-538 pages.).
