Mezzotint by Johann Philipp Haid (1730-1806), Augsburg engraver famous for this genre, after the painting by Robert Tournière c1740 preserved at St Malo. Arms of Augsburg below.

      - Plate area 310 x 192mm. Fine impression. A superb portrait of the French scientist dressed in fur on his expedition to Lapland (1736) to measure the length of a degree along the meridian confirming Newton’s theory that the Earth is flattened at the poles; he is shown with his left hand resting on a globe and his right hand pointing ahead; Maupertius rose to fame as a result, and was invited to Berlin by Frederick of Prussia to become a member of the Academy of Sciences in 1741, and later it’s president.

Suites de pieces pour le clavecin

printed and sold by John Walsh musick printer & instrument maker to his majesty at the Harp and Hoboy in Catherine Street in the Strand. Where may be had all the opera's & instrumental musick of the above author. No. 490. : c. 1736 and 1733 : London : Oblong folio, two volumes bound as one, engraved throughout. I: title, verso blank, and pp. [1] 94 [1], first and last pages blank; II: title, verso blank, and pp. [1] 2-83 [1], first and last pages blank. The same titleplate is used for both volumes, with the words 'Second volume' blocked out in printing for the first volume. : An attractive copy of the standard edition of Handel's harpsichord suites. Volume I contains the 'Eight Great Suites,' HWV426-433 which probably took their final form while Handel was working for the Duke of Chandos at Cannons (1717-1719) but derive from earlier sketches. Volume II contains the D minor suite HWV436 written after 1720, works which had appeared earlier in the so called piracy of 1719-20 (see below), a G major suite of questionable authorship HWV441, and the Chaconne in G HWV442/2 which is probably an early work. The publishing history of the suites is complex and still not entirely clear. Volume I was published under Handel's direct supervision in 1720 and printed by John Cluer - although he had worked with Walsh previously. The plates were revised, in Smith's analysis, c. 1721-22 and again c. 1725-27, but copies inevitably vary in their make up. Some were sold by Walshwith a pasted on imprint before he produced his own edition - the present edition - in 1736 with new plates, thus fixing the text in the final form as left by the composer. When Handel published his edition of volume I in 1720 he claimed 'I have been obliged to publish Some of the following lessons because Surrepticious and incorrect copies of them had got abroad'. This refers to the Pieces à un & deux clavecins composées par Mr. Hendle with the imprint of Jeanne Roger in Amsterdam. However Donald Burrows has pointed out that the music engraving is in the current London style, different from Roger's and the names of the movements are characteristically English. Burrows therefore suggests that 'the titlepage could just be genuine' and the publication a collaborative enterprise between Roger and a London publisher, possibly even Walsh. But this does not explainn why Handel himself disowned it and only included some of the pieces in his Volume I, promising to publish more if this volume received a favourable reception. The material not used by Handel appears, with other works, in volume II. The plates were, according to Smith, presumably prepared for Cluer, but no copies exist with his imprint and the volume was probably not offered for sale or was withdrawn from publication. These plates were then re-arranged by Walsh for the 1733 edition. The two volumes bound together here comprise the standard edition of these great works and the basis for the numerous subsequent editions. This copy is very lightly marked up with fingering and ornaments, but only in certain movements, suggesting that the performer - or her teacher - chose these movements to study, rather than taking the suites as wholes. The dust-soiling of the outer pages of Vol. I suggest that this part was not bound immediately. The performance marks are similar in the two volumes and were most likely made after the volume was bound. The owner of the volume, Grisel Hamilton, could be the daughter of Charles Hamilton, Viscount Binning who married Philip, 2nd Earl Stanhope in 1745, but the binding may be later than this. The sweet pea 'Lady Grisel Hamilton' (1895) is probably named for a later Grisel Hamilton.

The Anaphora of St. Basil, St. Gregory, and St. Cyril, Preceded by the Prayers of the Evening and Morning Incense, and Other Prayers, accompanied by an Arabic translation

Rome 1736 - Translation printed in Coptic and Arabic in parallel columns. A full page woodcut of Christ on the cross, a 4" x 5" woodcut of Christ and the Apostles. Printed in red and black, with numerous decorative head- and tail-pieces. Born into an Orthodox Coptic family in Egypt, Tuki was a convert to Catholicism, and received a doctoral degree in theology in Rome in 1735. Despite his contentious personality, he was appointed Bishop of Arsinoe by Pope Clement XIII in 1761. The non-original binding, inexpertly executed, put stress on the joints, resulting in detached upper board and first signature, and some buckling of pages. Laid paper with chain marks and watermark is fresh. The rebinding was in marbled paper-covered boards with leather backstrip, the spine panel of which is absent. Approx 9" x 7."          Principatus Silesiae Wratislaviensis.

Artist: Homann Erben (d) ; issued in: Nuremberg; date: (d)1736 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Upper Left margin perfectly replaced; - size (in cm): 56 x 82; - description: Beautiful dekorativ map shows the area of Breslau in lower Silesia with beautifl herladic cartouche and an index of the map; - vita of the artist: Johann Babtiste Homann (1664-1724) was born in Oberkammlach, the Electorate of Bavaria. Although educated at a Jesuit school, and preparing for an ecclesiastical career, he eventually converted to Protestantism and from 1687 worked as a civil law notary in Nuremberg. He soon turned to engraving and cartography; in 1702 he founded his own publishing house.Homann acquired renown as a leading German cartographer, and in 1715 was appointed Imperial Geographer by Emperor Charles VI. Giving such privileges to individuals was an added right that the Holy Roman Emperor enjoyed. In the same year he was also named a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Of particular significance to cartography were the imperial printing privileges (Latin: privilegia impressoria). These protected for a time the authors in all scientific fields such as printers, copper engravers, map makers and publishers. They were also very important as a recommendation for potential customers. In 1716 Homann published his masterpiece Grosser Atlas ueber die ganze Welt (Grand Atlas of all the World). Numerous maps were drawn up in cooperation with the engraver Christoph Weigel the Elder, who also published Siebmachers Wappenbuch.Homann died in Nuremberg. He was succeeded by the Homann heirs company, which was in business until 1848. The company was known as Homann Erben, Homanniani Heredes, or Heritiers de Homann abroad.

Verlegt von Johann David Jung, 1736., Frankfurt am Mayn: - Two parts in 1. Small folio. (12), 208, (4), 36 pp. Engraved half-title (signed Badollet fe[cit].), title printed in red & black, 44 woodcuts (see 1672 printing); some browning, lower margins waterstained, occasional minor marginalia, pp. 97-98 torn at lower gutter (some minor loss), ink stain pp. 15, 31-32. Original full vellum, manuscript spine title; some tearing or damage to spine. From the library of John Stuart, the Third Earl of Bute (1713-1792), George III's tutor and his first Prime Minister (1762-3) [no markings]. CLASSIC WORK ON MINGING ENGINEERING & TECHNOLOGY Eighth edition, the final German edition and the most complete. "Designation as the fifth edition is erroneous. This edition contains the annotations, etc., as in the 1672 edition, and [Christian] Berward's Interpes Phraseologiae, with separate pagination (36 pp.). There is a new section, designated as Second Appendix to the Fifth Book, describing saltpeter plantations and the manufacture of gunpowder. This is illustrated with three new woodcuts showing recrystallization of saltpeter and the milling and graining of gunpowder." â€" Sisco & Smith, p. 334. "Although the title-page credit one 'J.E.C.' with editing and enlarging it, this is essentially a reprint of the 1703 edition, with an added section on gunpowder, illustrated by engravings of powder mills and graining shops. 'J.E.C.' may stand for Johann Hiskias Cardilucius, who wrote the Foreword to the 1672 edition . the illustrations in this 1736 edition are identical with the ones in the 1580 edition and with a few exceptions were obviously printed from the same blocks." â€" Sisco & Smith. Considering the importance of Ercker's treatise it is remarkable how little is on record about him. He was inspector-general of the mines in Hungary, Transylvania, and the Tyrol, which position he held under three consecutive emperors in the 16th century, and he calls himself of St. Annen Bergk. This town is in the Saxon Erzgebirge, close to the Bohemian border. His book was highly prized at the time, for it was a record of practical experiences, and was not burdened with theories and hypotheses. Ercker's work should prove of interest to the economic historian for throughout it one can catch glimpses of the relation between scientist and plant operator and see the utilization of scientific knowledge and techniques for the control of mill operations for an increase of profit. "The only one of Ercker's works to contain many drawings, it presents a systematic review of the methods of testing alloys and minerals of silver, gold, copper, antimony, mercury, bismuth, and lead; of obtaining and refining these metals, as well as of obtaining acids, salts, and other compounds. The last chapter is devoted to salt-peter." â€" DSB, IV, pp. 393-394. Lazarus Ercker, (born c. 1530, Annaberg, Saxony [Germany]â€"died c. 1594, Prague, Bohemia [now in Czech Republic]) important German writer on early metallurgy. He studied at the University of Wittenberg (1547â€"48) and in 1554 was appointed assayer at Dresden, the first of many such positions he held in the state bureaucracy of Saxony. After 1567 he became control tester of coins at Kutná Hora, near Prague. In his great work, Beschreibung allerfürnemisten mineralischen Ertzt und Berckwercksarten (1574; "Description of Leading Ore Processing and Mining Methods"), he presented a systematic review of the techniques then in use for testing alloys and minerals of silver, gold, copper, antimony, mercury, bismuth, and lead; of obtaining and refining such metals; and of extracting acids, salts, and other compounds. It may be regarded as the first manual of analytic and metallurgical chemistry. â€" Britannica.          Autograph letter in French to Francesco Algarotti (1712-64), essayist, poet, philosopher, scientist & art lover in Rome.

Dated: Cirey [-sur-Blaise] 4 June [1736]. - 7 pages in 4to. Voltaire expresses his regrets for having wronged Algarotti affirming his friendship with him in a warm letter: ‘You know how I have waited for you to reproach me for my error by feeling it, and I am inconsolable when I think of the immense time that I shall spend without being able to tell you myself how happy I am to have been in the wrong, and how annoyed I am at the same time, let us forget forever I beg you that I could suspect you, and that you have spent three months without writing to me, please be in hopes that it will not happen to you again; in whatever land you may be living, I always wish that you may have friendship for me,’ Voltaire says he would be hurt if Algarotti did not visit Cirey (n.1) on his way to Italy ‘for you cannot be excused from passing through France, and only fifteen leagues from me, think of me as a hotel ’ ‘ we shall not go to Lorraine (n.2) if you do not want to, and if you do, we will go, before that wretched wandering king (n.3) takes possession of it,’, ‘ I do assure you, .if you skip Cirey when you go to Italy, it really would be rushing it, you will do just as you please, and I shall never complain of anything that can accelerate the charming project of establishing yourself on the far side of the mountains, it will depend on you, but come back and see the [?] mezzanines (n.4), you would not recognise Cirey, you would see the first of the Emiliens(n.5), . (added in manuscript by Francesco Algarotti:) ‘Cirey, 4 June [1736]. At present Cirey is looking its best. The lovely Emilie was there and the first of the Emiliens. (Voltaire) It would be good to make a pilgrimage to come and see us as the divine Saba [?] will this [?] Spring. It is certain that Cirey will become the Mecca of well-bred people.’ The young Venetian scientist and poet, Francesco Algarotti, had visited the Chateau de Cirey in 1735 at the insistence of Voltaire and his host and mistress Emilie de Bretueil (the ‘two Emiliens’). He had just composed his ‘Newtonism for Ladies’, inspired by Newton’s experiments in optics, which was to give him international renown, and read from his manuscript to his delighted hosts, who were greatly impressed by his erudition and style based on the writings of Fontenelle to whom the work was dedicated. Algarotti saw his weeks at Cirey as a model of the refined taste and good living enjoyed by the social elite of the day. (1) Chateau de Cirey, about 250 km from Paris, owned by the blue stocking, Emilie de Breteuil, Marquise du Chatelet, became Voltaire’s refuge in 1734 when he fled Paris from persecution by the French parliament following the publication of his Lettres Philosophiques (1734) suppressed by censorship; (2) Cirey was situated near the border with Lorraine, then an independent province outside French jurisdiction, and thus an ideal refuge for Voltaire who could cross the border to escape if necessary; (3) the exiled Polish king, Stanislaw Leszczynski,(1677-1766), was made Duke of Lorraine and Bar in 1736 by his son in law Louis XV of France, and resided at Lunéville; (4) Voltaire undertook major restoration of the chateau, enlarging it by creating a long gallery; (5) Voltaire here calls himself ‘the first of the Emiliens’, as the partner of Emilie de Breteuil, Marquise du Chatelet; the ‘two Emiliens’ being himself and his mistress residing at Cirey.          The Gentleman’s Magazine

      E. Cave, June and July, 1736 - Wood-engraved illustration Two issues One issue with a small stain to top margin, but nice copies Each issue contains an advertisement for the school where Johnson taught, before he left for London, and where he met Garrick as his pupil: "At Edial, near Litchfield in Staffordshire, Young Gentlemen are Boarded, and Taught the Latin and Greek Languages, by Samuel Johnson." Almost certainly the first mention of Johnson in print.

De Morbis Cutaneis. A Treatise of Diseases Incident to the Skin. In Two Parts. With A short Appendix concerning the Efficacy of Local Remedies, and the Manner of their Operations

      R. Wilkin et al, London 1736 - [16], x, 524 p. 20 cm. Frontisportrait of the author. Full leather, rebacked, and edges and corners repaired. Hinges repaired internally. Some spots to title page, portrait and portrait verso. Bookplate on front pastedown. Small tear in bottom of a front endpaper. Daniel Turner, born in London in 1667, deserves to be remembered for two reasons. Not only was he the author of the first book in the English language devoted wholly to dermatology, but he was also the recipient of the first degree of Doctor of Medicine conferred by the English colonies in North America. This, an honorary title, was obtained from Yale College in return for Turner's gift of books. First published in 1714, this book discusses the methods by which certain diseases erupt. In particular, he writes how contact with certain substances and imbalances in the body can lead to the development and display of diseases at the cutaneous or skin level. Note the bookplate for Thomas Stewart Traill (1781 – 1862) Scottish physician, chemist, mineralogist, meteorologist, zoologist and scholar of medical jurisprudence. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Catalogue raisonné de coquilles, et autres curiosités naturelles

Paris, Flahault & Prault, 1736. The catalogue of an auction sale commenced on 30 January 1736, in which 450 lots of shells and 132 of Surinamese insects and reptiles were offered. To recruit connoisseurs to the collecting of marine naturalia, Gersaint prefaces the catalogue with "Observations sur les Coquillages", in which shells are elevated to the status of works of art, and described as a source of inspiration for architects, sculptors, and painters; with a "Liste des Principaux Cabinets"; and with a list of the authors who have described shells. At the head of the catalogue, is a still-life of shells and coral, designed by François Boucher, and engraved by Claude Duflos, which serves as a condensed illustration of the collection and its decorative potential, while identifying Gersaint as the source of Rococo chic. Bound with Catalogue raisonné d'une collection considérable de diverses Curiosités en tous Genres, contenues dans les Cabinets de feu Monsieur Bonnier de la Mosson. Paris, Jacques Barrois & Pierre-Guillaume Simon, 1744 The second work in this volume is Gersaint's catalogue of the collections gathered by Joseph Bonnier de la Mosson (d. 26 July 1744), divided for sale in nine sections, comprising shells, insects, and animals stuffed or in preserving fluids; scientific instruments, pharmaceutical apparatus, and machinery; ornamental turning, bronzes, porcelain, clocks, and other works of art; pictures and prints; and furniture. This copy was bound for Jean-Claude Fauconnet de Vildé, Conseiller de la ville de Paris (d. circa 1765).Gersaint, Edmé François Paris 1694 - 1750 Paris Catalogue raisonné de coquilles, et autres curiosités naturelles . The author of this work was a merchant with a boutique on the Pont Notre-Dame in Paris, who from about 1732 began to promote the vogue for collecting shells (conchyliomania), dealing in them and amassing large collections. 3 In June 1734 Gersaint had organised an auction containing a 'Cabinet de Coquilles' imported from Holland, followed on 3 December by a sale of shells from collections in Holland, Flanders, and Paris (both auctions were held without printed catalogues). The Catalogue raisonné de coquilles et autres curiosités naturelles was printed for Gersaint's third sale of shells, his first grande vente publique, commenced on 30 January 1736, in which 450 lots of shells and 132 of Surinamese insects and reptiles were offered. According to a contemporary note in another copy, all these curiosities were the property of 'M. Guichard, militaire, et au sieur Gersaint son ami'. 4 To recruit connoisseurs to the collecting of marine naturalia, Gersaint prefaces the catalogue with 'Observations sur les Coquillages' (pp.1-29), in which shells are elevated to the status of works of art, and described as a source of inspiration for architects, sculptors, and painters; with a 'Liste des Principaux Cabinets' (pp.30-45); and with a list of the authors who have described shells (pp.46-61). His tactic seems to have worked: among buyers of shells in the sale were the aristocratic collectors Antoine-Joseph Dezallier d'Argenville, Jean de Jullienne, Antoine de La Roque, and Louis Quentin de Lorangère, and two enthusiastic amateurs, Gaillard (purchaser of thirty-five lots, including four of insects) and Sévin (thirty-nine lots). The sale realised more than 6600 livres, with each shell selling on average for 15 livres (the top lot 67 'une grande huître extrêmement baroque et presque noire en dehors et en dedans' fetched 75 livres). 5 [img-2639-left-large_default] Left Engraving by Claude Duflos after a design by François Boucher The engraved title-frontispiece is a still-life of shells and coral, designed by François Boucher, and engraved by Claude Duflos. 6 'Placed at the head of the catalogue, the frontispiece provides a condensed illustration of the collection and its decorative potential, while identifying Gersaint as the source of Rococo chic'. 7 Boucher himself became a leading collector of shells (he purchased at least three lots of shells in Gersaint's auction of La Roque's collection in 1745) and his own catalogue contains a eulogy by the auctioneer, Gersaint's colleague Pierre Rémy, celebrating him as a man of taste. 8 The interconnections of collectors of shells, patrons, and designers of Rococo architecture and decoration, and their role in gaining acceptance of the Rococo as a style, deserve investigation. 9 [img-2638-left-large_default] Bound for Jean-Claude Fauconnet de Vildé. The second work in this volume is Gersaint's sale catalogue of the collections gathered by Joseph Bonnier de la Mosson (6 September 1702-26 July 1744), divided for sale in nine sections, comprising shells, insects, and animals stuffed or in preserving fluids; scientific instruments, pharmaceutical apparatus, and machinery; ornamental turning, bronzes, porcelain, clocks, and other works of art; pictures and prints; and furniture. The 966 lots were removed from the owner's townhouse, the Hôtel de Lude, fabulously decorated by Jacques de Lajoue, with painted depictions of the cabinets, and were offered in March and April 1745 (furniture and objects 'de moindre conséquence' had been sold in December 1744 and January 1745 without a catalogue). 10 One of the highest prices in the sale (1100 livres) was paid by Madame de Pompadour for a pot-pourri in porcelain which Bonnier de la Mosson had acquired from the prince de Condé. 11 George-Louis Leclerc, comte de Buffon, bought many shells and insects (thirty-one lots and twenty-eight lots respectively); other persistent buyers were Michel-Ferdinand d'Albert d'Ailly, duc de Chaulnes; Crozat de Thiers; Crozat de Tugny; Carl-Gustav Tessin; the amateurs Dupin, Foissac, Hénin; and the dealer Joseph-Gabriel Agard. Gersaint himself purchased fifty-four lots, including a marble table with a sculpted base (lot 939: 1060 livres) and a unicorn's horn (lot 369: 72 livres), for a total of 7813 livres. 12 Some copies of the catalogue are illustrated by the Boucher-Duflos frontispiece for the Catalogue raisonné de coquilles of 1736, with its text appropriately modified. references Leopoldo Cicognara, Catalogo ragionato dei libri d'arte e d'antichità posseduti dal conte Cicognara (Pisa 1821), no. 4406; Universal Catalogue of Books on Art (London 1870), p.661 (Bodleian Library copy); Jacob Lewine, Bibliography of eighteenth century art and illustrated books, being a guide to collectors of illustrated works in English and French of the period (London 1898), p.95 (erroneously dated 1754); Henri Cohen, Guide de l'Amateur de Livres à Gravures duxviii e siècle, revised by Seymour de Ricci (Paris 1912), no. 206; The Lessing J.          The Analogy of Religion, Natural and Revealed, to the Constitution and Course of Nature. To which are added two brief dissertations: I. Of personal identity. II. Of the nature of virtue.

James, John and Paul Knapton, London 1736 - First edition, 4to. xii, 320pp complete. Finely bound in contemporary paneled calf, spine expertly renewed with morocco label. Bookplate of Lytton Strachey on front pastedown, beneath an earlier bookplate. Contents clean and unmarked, a remarkably fresh copy. 'Butler's was an empirical approach, similar to Hume's, but he held that philosophic scepticism should not entail religious scepticism. Assuming, as the deists were prepared to, that God is the author of nature, there are no contradictions, obscurities or improbabilities in religious doctrine different in kind from those encountered in science. Thus the religious order and the scientific order are similar in nature, and both show the working of the Supreme Creator' (PMM). Printing and the Mind of Man 193.

By Hend.

Artist: Homann Erben RJ & Julien; issued in: Nuremberg; date: ca 1736 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 55 x 80; - description: Map shows the former duchy of Brieg in Silesia with the city Brzeg, Strehlen (Strzelin), Nimptsch (Niemcza), Nambslau (Namyslow), Pitschen (Byczyna), Creutzburg (Kluczbork) and Breslau.; -vita of the artist: Johann Babtiste Homann (1664-1724) was born in Oberkammlach, the Electorate of Bavaria.
