Also notable is the Relation succinte du voyage du capitaine Beering dans la Sibérie (volume IV, pp.452-458), which is the first published account of Vitus Bering's 1728 voyage through the eponymous straits, whose importance he failed to recognize after sighting no land. Beering depuis la ville de Tobolsk jusqu' Kamtschatka (bound between pp.452 and 453) is based on Bering's manuscript map, which was given to the King of Poland and in turn passed to Du Halde to be reproduced here. Bering's map is "The first printed map of part of present Alaska" (S.I. Schwarz and R.E. Ehrenberg, The Mapping of America).

Paris, Cuchet, 1792. 2 volumes. 8vo. With 2 engraved plates, one folding, and 7 plates extra added. Contemporary olive sheepskin, modern paper sides.

Moström 293; Ward 179. Enlarged and highly valuable edition of this important mineralogical work. The first edition of the Sciagraphia consisted of 166 pages, and J.C. Delaméthrie provided the enlargements in the present edition. Torbern Olaf Bergman (1735-1784) was a Swedish scholar, and his book provided the first classification of minerals by their composition, and thus based on purely chemical principles. Bergman's analysis also disproved the widely held "saline principle" in crystallization. The two engraved plates belonging to this edition show equipment and crytaline geometry. The first is engraved by Sellier. The 7 numbered plates, which are extra added in this copy, are also engraved by Sellier, after Fossier, and depict minerals.Very good copy, only very slightly foxed, spine of first volume slightly damaged at top and bottom. Interesting copy of a valuable mineralogical work with 7 extra plates.

Paris: P. G. Le Mercier, 1735 - 4 volumes, folio (429 × 274 mm). Contemporary cat's-paw calf, spines divided in compartments by six raised bands, contrasting red morocco labels in two, others richly gilt with floral tools, leaf sprays, etc., sides ruled in gilt with three-line fillet, marbled endpapers, red edges. Collector's book labels. A little skilful repair to spine-ends, an excellent set, tall and well-margined, contents clean and fresh, in a handsome contemporary binding. With 65 maps and plates (all but one double-page or folding); titles in red and black incorporating engraved pictorial vignette by Baquoy after Humblot; with all half-titles; woodcut head- and tailpieces, typographic ornaments, historiated and decorative initials. First edition of this cornerstone of any collection of books on China, which is also among the rarest and most desirable of important Americana, included in Rare Americana: A Selection of One Hundred and One Books, Maps and Prints not in the John Carter Library. This, "the first definitive European work on the Chinese empire" (Hill), was compiled by Du Halde, Jesuit former confessor to the duc d'Orléans, from the accounts, published and unpublished, prepared by 27 Jesuit missionaries during their travels. This encyclopaedic work not only provided valuable information on Chinese political institutions, education, language, medicine, science, customs and artefacts - importantly it is one of the earliest European sources on Chinese ceramics - but also marked the first appearance of 43 maps by Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville, internationally recognized as "the finest cartographer of his time" (Moreland & Bannister). Drawn from recent surveys commissioned by the Emperor Kang-hi from the Jesuits, these maps represented an immense improvement on existing knowledge and are considered by Tooley to be "the principal cartographic authority on China during the 18th century". For certain remote parts of northern China, Mongolia and Tibet, this work was the only adequate reference until the technological revolution in surveying in the 20th century. The work also contains the first separate map of Korea, together with a previously unpublished account of that country by Jean-Baptiste Régis. The book is also of considerable interest in terms of the exploration of America. Printed here for the first time is the eponymous Vitus Bering's account of his 1728 traverse of the Strait, "Relation succinte du voyage du capitaine Beering dans la Siberie." Of comparable importance is the map "Carte des pays traversees par le Capne. Beering depuis la ville de Tobolsk jusqu'a Kamtschatka" bound between pp. 452–3, based on Bering's manuscript map, and containing the first representation of any part of Alaska, St. Lawrence Island. The manuscripts followed a circuitous route to Du Halde. Bering, a Dane who had risen in the ranks of the Russian navy, was sponsored on his expedition by Peter the Great, and when he finally returned to St. Petersburg in 1730, five years after Peter's death, his account was sent as a gift to the King of Poland, who in turn "gave them to Du Halde with permission to do with them 'as he saw fit'" (Hill). Lada-Mocarski reports that in many copies pp. 451–2 in vol. IV have been supplanted by the map; in this copy, both are present. An excellent example of this fine work of 18th-century encyclopaedism, superbly printed and engraved; this first edition was considered by Lada-Mocarski to be "the most desirable and significant." Cordier, Sinica 46–47; Cox I, p. 335; Hill 498; Howes 546; Lada-Mocarski, Books on Alaska II, pp. 20-22; Lust 12; Moreland & Bannister Antique Maps; Sommervogel iv 35.11; Tooley Maps and Mapmakers, p.107; Wagner p. 156; Wroth: Early Cartography of the Pacific, 91.

      - Amsterdam, Johannes Rotterdam, 1735 (derde druk). [x],320 pp. Met frontispice en 30 platen. Perkamenten spitselband. ANTI-CATHOLIC MEGA-BROADSIDE / PORTUGUESE AND SPANISH INQUISITION: A VIEW OF THE PRACTICES AND PROCEEDINGS OF THE TRIBUNAL OF THE INQUISITION; ALSO OF THE CEREMONIES PRACTICED BY THE ROMAN CATHOLICKS ON ASH WEDNESDAY & GOOD FRIDAY.

Broadside (58.5 x 93 cm / 23 x 36.5 inches), composed of 12 distinct panels each with full original hand colour, dissected on the panel boundaries and mounted upon original linen (Very Good, lovely original colour, light even toning, some chipping with minor loss to blank marginal areas of middle and bottom left panels; light vertical line of toning to second row of panels; printers crease to right middle panels). - London: Printed and Sold by John Bowles at the Black Horse in Cornhill, [circa 1735]. Exceptionally rare – an extremely large broadside composed of 12 panels, conveying Anti-Catholic rhetoric by showcasing the horrors of the Iberian Inquisitions as practiced in Portugal, Goa (India) and Spain, published by the prominent London printmaker John Bowles, after templates by Bernard Picart. - This resplendent broadside is one of the rarest, largest and most impressive Anti-Catholic prints published in England during the 18th Century. Issued by the prominent London printer John Bowles it capitalizes on the virulent Anti-Catholic sentiment that was prevalent in Hanoverian England in the years between the two Jacobite invasions of 1715 and 1745. In resplendent fashion, the broadside features twelve illustrated panels, all with brilliant full original colour, depicting a different aspect of the Inquisition as practiced in Portugal, Goa (the capital of Portugal’s Asian empire), and Spain, accompanied by explanatory text. The Iberian Inquisitions were considered to be the most extreme and barbarous manifestation of fanatical Catholicism (which indeed many Catholics found repugnant), and no other subject made the blood of strident Protestants boil hotter. While beautifully made, Bowles’ broadside was nevertheless ‘red meat’ for the street. While the explanatory text below the views was entertaining, the images themselves were accessible to the illiterate and semi-literate (the majority of the British populous). The images employed by Bowles are directly copied from engravings by from the early volumes of Bernard Picart’s Cérémonies et coutumes religieuses de tous les peuples du monde (9 vols., Amsterdam: 1723-1743), edited by Jean-Frédéric Bernard. Picart, in turn borrowed some of this imagery from the engravings of Theodor De Bry, made in Cologne during the 1590s. Picart’s work was incredibly popular throughout Europe, and while, in the words of Jonathan Israel, Picart went to "immense effort to record the religious rituals and beliefs of the world in all their diversity as objectively and authentically as possible", he struggled to hide his Anti-Catholic bias. (Jerusalem with suburbs.) Augustanum.

Augsburg circa 1735 - Birds-eye plan after Andrichomius, (58 x 49.5 cm) with 12 columns of text below, title panel in Latin and German above, engraved plan with full original hand-colouring, central horizontal fold, three short marginal splits. Framed and glazed. Plan of ancient Jerusalem and its suburbs, drawn after the earlier Van Adrichom's plan from 1584. This plan was copied by a number of early mapmakers (such as Jodocus Henricus Kramer and Jan Jansson) for their works on the Holy Land. The 1584 version of the plan was issued in the Theatrum Terrae Sanctae et Biblicarum Historiarum by Adrichom in Koln. Adrichom (1533-1585) was a Dutch priest whose scholarly research of the Bible and writings of pilgrims and Josephus made him the acknowledged expert on Holy Land geography. The plan of the city surrounded by many illustrations of biblical and historical interest. It depicts sites and scenes of Jerusalem and its surroundings, which are numbered and identified by two hundred and seventy captions in German, referring to various events from the Old and New Testament. Although the title states that the plan refers to Jerusalem at the time of Christ, there is no chronological order to the scenes, as scenes from the life of Christ appear alongside scenes from the Torah, and ancient characters appear alongside European architecture and characters of the sixteenth century. Georg Matthaus Seutter (1678-1757) was one of the most prolific map publishers in 18th century Germany. He started his career as a brewer but uninspired by the beer business became an apprentice engraver under the the prominent German cartographer J. B. Homann. He later opened his own dealership offering custom made atlases, assembled by request. By 1732 Seutter was one of the most prolific publishers of his time and was honoured by the German Emperor Charles VI with the title of "Imperial Geographer". Although not dated, we know the offered plan was created after this appointment, based on Seutter's signature.

Paris Lemercier 1735 - Four volumes, folio, with 65 plates after Antoine Humblot, including 8 double plates (costumes, village views, hunting, fishing, etc.), 10 city plans, one plate showing Beijing's observatory, portrait of Confucius, numismatic plate, music plate and 43 maps, most folding, contemporary mottled calf gilt, a fine set. "The first definitive European work on the Chinese Empire" (Hill), here present in "the most desirable and significant edition" (Lada-Mocarski). Du Halde, a Parisian Jesuit, collected and edited the letters, published and unpublished, of twenty seven Jesuit missionaries including particularly Martino Martini's Sinicae Historicae (1658) and Lecomte's Nouveaux Memoires (1696). Although compiled by a Jesuit, Du Halde was under severe pressure to say as little as possible about the progress of Christianity in Asia, lest it would show the disagreements within the Order about such contentious issues as the Rites controversy. Hence the emphasis falls heavily on secular material. Historically the work is regarded as monumental from a textual point of view because of the vast amount and variety of interesting details on Chinese political institutions, education, language, medicine, science, customs, and artefacts, and it is one of the earliest European sources on Chinese ceramics. Visually, it also publishes for the first time 43 maps by Jean-Baptiste Bourgignon d'Anville, the leading cartographer of the time. These maps were commissioned by the Kangxi emperor from Jesuit surveys, printed xylographically in Beijing, then sent to Paris to be engraved by d'Anville. They comprise the second European atlas of China, the first of Tibet and Korea, and include the first published map and account of Vitus Bering's expedition to the North Pacific - this is the first map to depict any part of Alaska. Only about two hundred copies of the first edition were published. Notwithstanding various inaccuracies, Du Halde's work remains today "the bible of European Sinophilia" (Lowendahl). Cordier, Sinica 46-48; Challenge and Change 21; Lowendahl 394; Lada-Mocarski 2; Lust 12. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Visually, the titlepage is quite striking and unusual, with the title itself, four small woodcuts of winged angels at each corner, and a number of vine leaf ornaments all within a frame composed of varied tools. The tract itself is a response to an argument published by Ysidoro de Arévalo that the Governor of Manila in the absence of the Archbishop did not plan to contest the requests of Royal treasury officers and assessors, and to introduce himself into the process of appointing and confirming chaplains for the Spanish fleets, galleons, and other military ships in the area. Extremely rare, with only two copies located, at the British Library and the Newberry Library. MEDINA, MANILA 196. PALAU 62552.
