The Desperadoes; an heroick History. Translated from the Italian of the celebrated Marini (the Original having passed ten Editions.) Containing a Series of the most surprizing Adventures of the Princes Formidaur and Florian In four Books. Embellish'd with eight excellent Copper-Plates.

London: Printed by W. R. and sold by T. Asltey J. Isted and T. Worrall 1733. - 8vo., pp. [2], iv, [2], 5-284; with a frontispiece and seven other engraved plates; a few small stains, slightly shaken, in contemporary half calf and marbled boards, rubbed and scraped; early gift inscription to title-page 'Carolus a Carolo d'Avenant?.First and only edition in English of Le gare de' disperati (1644), the second of three romances by Marini (1596-1668). Inevitably, 'It was necessary to omit many Things that were contrary to our Morals; to Decency, and to the Purity of the English Tongue '. But the general scheme of events is the same as the original, and is outlined on the title-page: 'A Series of the most surprizing Adventures of the Princes Formidaur and Florian; the former being in love with Zelinda, whom he takes to be his own Sister; and the latter having married Fidalme, who he supposes to be his father's Daughter by a second Wife, and afterwards kills in Disguise in single Combat. With a Relation of the various amazing Accidents, and Misfortunes, which happen thereon, until the Whole concludes with making them all happy, by a most extraordinary and uncommon Revolution.'Marini's biography remains vague, but he was the author of several successful romances, the first being Calloandro (1640-1), written under a complicated collection of pseudonyms. Le gare de' disperati was the only work by him to be translated into English. ESTC lists seven copies: BL, Cambridge, National Library of Ireland; Columbia, Harvard, UCLA, and University of Pennsyl vania.

A View of the Real Power of the Pope, and Of the Power of the Priesthood over the Laity

London: Printed in the Year, 1733. With an Account how they use it. By T. H. Esq; Octavo (196 × 119 mm). Contemporary panelled calf, raised bands, unlettered. Early ownership inscriptions of Benjamin Coleman, 1787, and Mary Coleman to front endpapers. Old and inoffensive ink stain running down the rear joint with a couple of ink spots to top edge not affecting the text, a handsome copy in excellent condition, clean and fresh. First edition. An interesting example of the apparently widespread attitude of ordinary English Catholics at this time, exhibiting considerable anti-clericalism and impatience bordering on disgust with papal temporal power. The work includes one chapter rich with thinly disguised personal details settling the author's score with various English priests. Thomas Hawkins (c. 1675?-1766), of Nash Court, Boughton under Blean, Kent, was a member of a notable English Catholic family, numbering the poet and translator Sir Thomas Hawkins (bap. 1575, d. 1640?) among his forebears. His father, also Thomas, died in 1678, and after 1688 the family was plundered and forced into exile in France, where Hawkins took the opportunity to study at the University of Paris. The second part of the book consists of a translation of the prefatory discourses of Claude Fleury's Histoire ecclésiastique (1691).

An Enquiry into the Original of Moral Virtue. Wherein is shown, (Against the Author of the Fable of the Bees, &c.) That Virtue is founded in the Nature of Things, is unalterable, and eternal, and the great Means of private and publick Happiness. With Some Reflections on a late Book, intitled, An Enquiry into the Original of our Ideas of Beauty and Virtue.

Edinburgh Printed for Gavin Hamilton by R. Fleming and Company 1733 - 8vo, 194 x 116 mms., pp. [iv], xxxii [xxxiii - lv Contents, lvi blank], 546 [547 errata, 548 blank], recent quarter roan, marbled boards; a rather drab binding, but the text is clean. Campbell (1691 -1756) wrote this work in the early 1720s and entrusted its publication to Alexander Innes (c. 1675 - 1742), who promptly published the book under his own name in 1728, in a spectacular piece of literary thievery. To make matters worse, Innes impudently inserted marginal notes explaining the text and frequently misinterpreted Campbell's views. Campbell drew attention to this piracy in his Discourse proving that the Apostles were no Enthusiasts (1730), with a dignified, but pointed note on the verso of the title-page saying that he would soon be publishing an edition of the work "with considerable Additions and Amendments, leaving out the Doctor's Introduction." Campbell's Christian charity was almost as spectacular as Innes' impertinence, since he generously claimed in the Preface, when the book was published in 1733, that "tis of no Consequence to the Publick, by whose Labour the following Sheets were compos'd. If they are capable of serving any good End, this is all that can be judg'd valuable in the Performances." [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The case of the planters of tobacco in virginia...a vindication of the said representation

London: J Roberts, 1733. Contemporary paper-backed marbled boards. From the Astor Library and New York Public with a duplicate release stamp, and the library of Gordon Jones, M.D., with his bookplate. First edition. The tobacco planters of Virginia in the British Colonies in America became outraged by the hardships imposed upon them by acts of British Parliament. The vast majority of American tobacco was exported to England, and thus planters in the Colonies were dependant for their survival upon payment by tobacco merchants in Great Britain. Fraud and corruption by those tobacco merchants were rampant; higher duties were imposed regularly, and bonds and security had to be paid prior to export. Planters were warned not to trust the merchants and in addition to other acts of protest, the representatives of the planters in Virginia proposed keeping the tobacco in a warehouse under lock and key.

      - Berlin, A. Haude, 1733, Kl.8°, 7 Bl., 444 pp., 10 Bl. -cf. Gurlt, Hirsch II, p.496 - SGC I.V, p.285; Hirsch/H.         HISTORY OF THE RENOWNED DON QUIXOTE DE LA MANCHA.translated by several hands: and published by Peter Motteux.

London For John Knapton, R. Knaplock, J. Sprint, D. Midwinter, J. Tonson [et al] 1733 - 4 volumes. An early printing, "Carefully Revised and Compared with the Best Edition of the Original at Madrid By Mr. Ozell". "Adorn’d with New Sculptures", comprised of 15 fine woodcut plates and woodcut head-and-tale-pieces, and engraved initials. 12mo, beautifully bound in full polished calf and signed by Bayntun of Bath, the spines with gilt ruled raised bands separating compartments elaborately decorated with fully tooled panels incorporating central gilt devices and with red morocco labels lettered in gilt. [xxi], 311; [vi], 304; xii, 312; 359 pp. A superb set in especially fine condition. Very handsome and beautifully preserved. A WONDERFUL PERIOD AND EARLY EDITION IN ENGLISH OF CERVANTES GREAT CLASSIC. This is the best of Motteaux’s editions, the most faithful to the Spanish original yet retaining the flow and style of his earlier English translations. Motteaux’s translation was also chosen for English illustrated editions by Gustave Dore and Salvador Dali. The engraved illustrations used in this edition are both charming and evocative. They add tremendously to the appeal of this printing. DON QUIXOTE ranks among the greatest literary works of Western Civilization. "What had begun as a simple satire on the tedious chivalric romances of the time broadened into a sweeping panorama of Spanish society. It was for this, the liveliness, and the gibes at the famous, which one it instant fame. Its larger claims, the subdued pathos, its universal humanity, were slower to be appreciated. But within months Don Quixote and Sancho Panza had become legendary.Don Quixote is one of those universal works which are read by all ages at all times, and there are very few who have not at one time or another felt themselves to be Don Quixote confronting the windmills." After settling in Berlin, Frisch became a member of the Society of Sciences in 1706, under the recommendation of the German mathematician Gottfried Leibnitz. Frisch was interested in natural history and collected specimens to form his own “Cabinet of Curiousities.” His drawings of birds from this collection would later become the basis for this publication, which included 252 bird illustrations. Frisch began publishing Vorstellung der Vögel in Teutschland und Beyläuffig auch Einiger Fremden, mit Ihren Eigenschaften Beschrieben und Nach Ihren Natürlichen Farben in 1733. The work was published in 14 parts, with a supplement, over a period of thirty years. It was completed after his death in 1763 by his sons, Leopold Frisch, who wrote the text, and Ferdinand Helfreich, who together with Philip Jakob Frisch, engraved and colored the plates. The last 30 plates were by Johann's grandson Johann Christoph Frisch. This rare work is divided into twelve parts for the different bird families, and covers European and some exotic species.

      - Venezia, S. Coleti, 1733. 3 volumes. Folio (355 x 225mm). pp. (2), lxxxii, 469; (4), 551; (4), 676, with 92 engraved plates, 3 engraved title-vignettes, 2 engraved plates of portraits one of Vallisnieri and the other one of Contessa Celia Grilla-Borromea, to whom one of the works is dedicated and some engravings in the text. Contemporary half calf, a bit rubbed (frontcover hinge of first volume splitting). First edition of Vallisnieri's collected works. It was edited by his son Antonio and contains all his famous contributions on zoology, entomology, medicine, geology and natural history. Antonio Vallisnieri (1666-1730) was a pupil of Malpighi at Bologna. "In comparison with contemporary scientific thought, Vallisnieri's work has a very modern character - as Redi had already done - the way opened by Galileo (whom he quotes only twice) and Francis Bacon (whom he also quotes) he rejected Scholastic knowledge and trusted solely in direct observation and in experiment. Vallisnieri was thus one of the first modern naturalist to have a clear awareness of the character of scientific phenomena" (DSB). Vallisinieri did a.o. extensive research on the reproductive system of men and animals, he complemented to Redi's demonstration of the fallacy of the hypothesis of spontaneous generation and was a forerunner of evolutionary concepts.

Vignette ex-libris Richard d'Ivry. Saffroy, I, 10302 b. Franklin, 557-568. Bourgeois et André, III, 1404. O.H.R., 1514.

The case of the planters of tobacco in virginia.a vindication of the said representation.

J Roberts,, London: 1733 - 8vo. 64 pp. (lacking first blank leaf).
