Bel exemplaire. 325 HB+PP [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Sammelband containing 11 plays, including 3 first editions by Fielding:] The Old Debauchees; The Covent-Garden Tragedy; The Mock Doctor

      - 8vo. Sammelband of eleven dramatic works, including three rare first editions by Henry Fielding, as follows:[FIELDING, Henry]. The Old Debauchees. A Comedy. As it is Acted at the Theatre-Royal in Drury-Lane. [iv], 40 pp. London: J. Watts, 1732. First performed 1 June 1732 at the Theatre-Royal in Drury Lane with The Covent-Garden Tragedy (see next). The two plays ran together for 6 nights, after which The Covent-Garden Tragedy, was replaced by The Mock Doctor. The plot, which involves a Catholic priest's attempts to seduce a young woman, was based loosely on the case of the Jesuit Father Girard, who was tried and convicted for using magic to seduce Marie Catharine Cadier. The play's anti-Catholic bias made it a popular work for revival, and revised editions, under the title The Debauchees, appeared in 1746 and 1750. Cross III, p. 295.[FIELDING, Henry]. The Covent-Garden Tragedy. As it is Acted at the Theatre-Royal in Drury-Lane. [ii], 11, [3], 32 pp. London: J. Watts, 1732. First performed 1 June 1732 as a companion piece to The Old Debauchees. A satire on Ambrose Philips' popular tragedy The Distrest Mother (1712), with inspiration drawn from Hogarth's The Harlot's Progress. The central character, Mother Punchbowl, a character in the latter work, was modeled on the notorious madam Elizabeth Needham. The brothel setting enraged the public, and the play closed after one performance, with only sporadic revival thereafter. The tongue-in-cheek Prolegomena prints some of the criticism levied at the play, as the author admits he was unable to procure any positive reviews. An uncommon work, with no copies sold at auction listed on ABPC. Cross III, p. 295.[FIELDING, Henry]. The Mock Doctor: or The Dumb Lady Cur'd. A Comedy. Done from Moliere. As it is Acted at the Theatre-Royal in Drury-Lane. [viii], 32 pp. London: J. Watts, 1732. First edition of Fielding's ballad-opera adaptation of Molière's Le Médecin malgré lui, first performed 23 June 1732. A scarce work, 11 copies listed on ESTC and 1 copy sold at auction according to ABPC. Cross III, p. 296.Bound after the following works:MOTTLEY, John. The Imperial Captives: A Tragedy.

Together with a particular account of a Journey from Mocha to Muab, or Mowahib, the Court of the King of Yaman, their Second Expedition, in the years 1711, 1712, 1713. Also a Narrative concerning the tree and fruit of Coffee. Collected from the Observations of those who made the last Voyage; and an historical Treatise of the Original and Progress of Coffee, both in Asia and Europe.Second English edition. 2 engraved folding plates. 8vo. Contemporary calf rebacked . xvi, 372pp. London, James Hodges, A new translation of the text and with notes. The Ditton Park copy and with the Middleton ?Captivity? added from Purchase. This work contains probably the first full description of coffee in English. ? The account of the 'Voyage' and the 'Second Expedition' in this volume are anonymous; and they were editied by jean de La Roque (1661-1743). He was born at Marseilles, studied oriental languages, made some voyages to the Levant himself and served apparently, as correspondent to his father's newspaper. the captain who tells the story of the first voyage in a series of five letters, proves to be 'Captain Monsieur de Marveille' . But he does not go on the second voyage. The account of that trip was put together by La Roque from information furnished by M. Grelaudiere, who journeyed from Mokha to Muab to cure the King of Yemen, and two ship surgeons, Noiers and Barbier, .( Hunt) . Appended to the volume is: ?An account of the captivity of Sir Henry Middleton by the Turks at Mokha.? extracted from Purchase, which the editor claims to be the first visit by a European to these parts. The English translator/editor has added many footnotes to the French text.Hunt, 489; HÜnersdorff, 'Coffee: A Bibliography', p1284.

Contemporary full vellum with handwritten title to spine. Title pages in red and black lettering. Title vignettes. Decorative head-, tailpieces and initials. Originally published in Leeuwarden in 1714 (Vol. 1) and 1720 (Vol. 2), this two volume set commentary on Isaiah is Campegius Vitringa's magnum opus. It forms the basis for the commentaries of J. E. Leigh (1726-34), J. J. Rambach (1741), and A. F. Büsching (1749-51).The celebrated German orientalist, and Biblical critic Heinrich Friedrich Wilhelm Gesenius (1786-1842) was particularily emphatic in its commendation; declaring that [the book] not only made an epoch in the study of Isaiah, but outweighs the earlier and a good part of the later expositions. In wealth of philological and exegetical learning, aptness of illustration, and fulness of historical information, Gesenius declares that Vitringa's Commentary on Isaiah is by no means superseded. In the first volume a double page map with descriptive text illustrating Moabite territory in the Dead Sea region follows page 458. Binding partly darkened/soiled and age-toned. Some abrasion to head and tail of spine. Foxing to endpapers. Front free endpaper, half-title and title slightly creased. Minor and sporadic foxing and age-toning throughout. Text in Latin with some Hebrew. Binding in overall fair to good-, interior in good+ to very good condition. About the author: Campegius Vitringa (1659-1722) was a Dutch Protestant theologian and Hebraist. A follower of Johannes Cocceius,Vitringa was a supporter of prophetic theology. He was educated at the universities of Franeker and Leiden, and became professor of Oriental languages at the former in 1681. When locating prophetic outcomes, he would associate events to the near rather than the far-off future, placing a distinct focus on the period of the Maccabees (2nd Century BC). Like Joseph Mede (1586-1638), Vitringa believed wholeheartedly that the Millennium was yet to come, but did not expect any immediate changes. He relegated the end of the time to a remote future and strongly emphasized the concept of New Jerusalem (From Wikipedia). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A Collection of Voyages and Travels

John Walthoe, London 1732 - Eight volumes, folio, comprising two works in matching bindings, containing some 213 engraved plates including work by Herman Moll, Johannes Kip, and others (many double-page or folding), engraved and woodcut illustrations throughout; late eighteenth-century Russia, marbled edges. A splendid set of the two great voyage anthologies of the early eighteenth century, in handsome contemporary matched bindings. This set contains the Churchill anthology in its second improved edition and the first edition of the supplementary Osborne series, better known as the "Harleian" or "Oxford Voyages". Osborne's first volume comprises travels mainly in the Near and Middle East, while the second volume comprises voyages to India, East Asia, the East Indies, Africa, and North America. The maps are after Dutch cartographer Herman Moll and the frontispiece map in the second volume is "A Chart of the East Indies?" with the north and north-west coasts of Australia delineated in accordance with Dutch discoveries.Copies of the various editions of the Churchill Collection appear on the market from time to time, almost always in dilapidated condition - the result of their substantial size and the use that they were subjected to as the major source for voyage information in the early eighteenth century. This copy is in superb condition, the bindings bright and the text and plates remarkably fresh. The substantial volumes contain many accounts of voyages to a great many places, a number appearing for the first time, or at least for the first time in English. Originally published in 1704 in four volumes, it appears here in its second, much augmented six-volume edition. The success of the work is a reflection of an audience keenly interested in what was a time of energetic exploration and trade expansion throughout the world. For example, the first volume here contains descriptions of the lands and peoples of China, Formosa, Japan, the Congo, and South Africa, lands just beginning to be known to Europeans, as well as accounts of relatively less mysterious but still unfamiliar places such as Egypt and the Ukraine. The fifth volume is devoted largely to Africa, containing accounts of the lands which in the seventeenth century were called Guinea and Lower Ethiopia, but which in fact include the entire coast from Senegal through Angola. Native life, European settlements, animals, natural products, and much more are described in great detail. There is also a translation from the Spanish of Herrera's account of the discoveries of Columbus. The contents of the other volumes are varied, with reports of the Solomon Islands, Dutch shipwrecks in the East Indies, Ovalle's work on Chile (with a fine depiction of the Southern Cross), Virginia, attempts to discover a Northwest Passage, the sages of India, and the land of Tonqueen, now North Vietnam, among very many other reports. Much of the third volume is Baldaeus' work on the East Indies translated from the Dutch, while Nieuhoff's work on the East Indies, also translated, appears in the second volume. The plates are of special appeal, often showing very striking scenes of exotic life, particularly in tropical climes. They include detailed depictions of natives involved in sometimes fascinating activities (witchcraft, elephant catching) as well as many plates of botanical and zoological interest and a number of views of harbours or military engagements. This set is supplemented by the two-volume work by Thomas Osborne, generally known as the "Harleian Voyages" or the "Oxford Voyages". These two very scarce volumes were published by Osborne from the unpublished manuscripts in the collection of the earl of Oxford. Although separately published much later, the two Osborne volumes are often described as a supplement to the Churchill collection of voyages.Osborne's first volume comprises travels mainly in the Near and Middle East, while the second volume comprises voyages to India, East Asia, the East Indies, Africa, and North A [Attributes: First Edition]

Sammelband of eleven dramatic works, including three rare first editions by Henry Fielding, as follows: [FIELDING, Henry]. 295. [FIELDING, Henry]. 295. [FIELDING, Henry]. 296. Bound after the following works: MOTTLEY, John. The Imperial Captives: A Tragedy.
