Aubin, Nicolas, u. a.):
Cöln (wohl fingiert), 1732. 135 S. Grüner Pappband um 1800 Erste deutsche Ausgabe, - Fromm 1040; Hayn-Got. IV, 266. [Click Below for Full Description]

la Haye: Henri Scheurleer, 1732. 1732 BANNED edition Jonathan Swift Tale of a Tub Calvinism Catholic Satire 3v"Books, like men their authors, have no more than one way of coming into the world, but there are ten thousand to go out of it, and return no more." ― Jonathan Swift, A Tale of a Tub Jonathan Swift's "A Tale of a Tub" is a controversial work which was stirred over politics and religion and whether ancient or modern models were more important. This allegorical parody tale follows the lives and actions of three brothers who each represent a facet of European religion - Catholicism, Calvinism, and Lutheranism. Throughout Europe and England, readers wanted to be able to access the popular work. Justus van Effen, a Dutch journalist, published a French translation of 'Tub' entitled 'Le Conte Du Tonneau'. This translation became the standard edition to which French readers owed their acquaintance to Swift (Hermann Real).Interestingly, this French translation was placed on the Prohibited Book Index and banned by the Catholic Churchin 1734.Item number: #11271Price: $750SWIFT, JonathanLe conte du tonneau : contenant tout ce que les arts & les sciences ont de plus sublime et de plus mystérieux ; avec plusieurs autres pièces trèscurieusesA la Haye : Chez Henri Scheurleer, 1732-42.Details: · Collation: Complete; 3 volumeso Vol. 1 - [13], 5-300, [14] 7 engraved plates 1732 first editiono Vol. 2 - [14], 296 1 engraved plate A Lausanne & a Geneve: March-Mich Bousquet, 1742o Vol. 3 - [2], XVI, 280 A Lausanne & a Geneve: March-Mich Bousquet, 1742· References … [Click Below for Full Description]

NECKER Jacques (1732-1804).

AGRICULTURE). ELLIS, WILLIAM
Printed for Weaver Bickerton, London: Printed for the author, 1733; London, 1732. 191 x 127 mm. (7 1/2 x 5"). viii, 400 pp.; iv, 5-171 pp., [5] pp. (ads). Two separately published works bound in one. Early [First?] Edition of the first work; Second Edition (with additions) of the second work (published in same year as the first edition). Pleasing recent retrospective half calf over marbled boards, raised bands, spine with red morocco label, speckled edges. Paper repairs to title page and pp. iii and 151 of first work, no doubt to remove library stamps. Perkins 557, 562. A few quires of the first work with faint dampstain in the upper half of the fore margin (not affecting the text), light soiling to "Chiltern" title page, isolated minor browning in the first work, otherwise quite a fine, fresh, clean copy with only trivial imperfections internally, and in an unworn sympathetic binding. This volume contains two important 18th century English works dealing in a direct, specific way with land management, soil amelioration, and animal husbandry. William Ellis (d. 1758) was a self-described "plain farmer," whose second book "The Practical Farmer" (bound last in our volume) was an immediate success, going into three editions in its first year. Divided into nine chapters, it covers topics that clearly were of interest to the contemporaneous audience, from "increasing crops of pease and beans" to "how to keep pigeons and tame rabbits to advantage." The 14 chapters of the first work in our volume cover a great many headings. But it is slightly more focused than the second in that it … [Click Below for Full Description]

[DOUAI - PHARMACOPOEIA]. BRISSEAU, Michel, and others.
Pharmacopoeia Duacena galeno-chymica nobilissima et amplissimi senatus authoritate et jussu munita & edita.Douai, Jacques-François Willerval, 1732. Small folio (25.5 x 17 cm). With a woodcut of the then current Douai coat-of-arms (a shield with an arrow and eight drops of blood) on the title-page. Contemporary tanned sheepskin, richly gold-tooled spine. [1], [1 blank], [2], 180, [7], [1 blank] pp. Very rare first and only edition of the pharmacopoeia of the city of Douai in French Flanders. Although the city housed the second oldest university in the Low Countries, it had never before compiled its own pharmacopoeia, whereas nearby Lille had been the first city in the Southern Low Countries to do so. Compared with other pharmacopoeias, the Douai pharmacopoeia was rather conservative and even old fashioned, both in its recipes as in its use of measurements and despite being titled as "galeno-chymica" the number of chemical formulas is quite low (cf. Vandewiele). With a library stamp and a contemporary owner's inscription on the tile-page. Rebound and with some restorations at the spine and corners; edges and spine worn, with two cracks in the latter. Browned throughout, especially the last 10 pages due to a damp stain that gradually grows larger through the final 30 pages. Anet (1 manuscript copy); Daems & Vandewiele, p. 93 (3 copies); Vandewiele, "La Pharmacopée de Douai en manuscrit de Michel Brisseau" in: Revue d'histoire de la pharmacie LXI, 216 (1973), pp. 340-344; WorldCat (2 copies); not in: Blake; Wellcome.

[Letter, signed, to Nicolò Caragiani in Venice concerning the trading conditions in Cairo for different woolen and silk fabrics].Cairo, 22 October 1732. Manuscript letter in Italian, opening with a duplicate of an earlier letter, in a different hand, dated 26 September 1732, written in ink on one page of a bifolium originally folded 4 more times for sending (to 8.5 x 14 cm) with the address on one side and traces of a red wax on the other. Letter in Italian concerning the cloth trade in the capital of Egypt during the last months of 1732. The letter is addressed to the Italian merchant Nicolò Caragiani in Venice, who actively traded with the Levant and correspondence with several other merchants survives. The present letter informs Caragiani on the demand in certain types of cloth, which prizes are expected to rise during the approach of Ramadan. It mentions various fabrics including silks, damask and wools and also includes the prices of coffee and pepper. The letter opens with a copy of an earlier letter, followed by the actual letter in a different hand, signed by one Michiel whose last name is unclear, but could read something like Petea or Retea. With some faint foxing, and a tiny hole and a tear along a fold on the address side, otherwise in very good condition.

[MANUSCRIPT - MILITARY - FRENCH ROYAL].
[Binding title:] Abregé de la marine du Roy 1732.[Paris?, 1732]. 13.5×19 cm. Manuscript in brown-black, red and blue ink on vellum, some of the lettering and borders gilt. With a beautiful frontispiece painting in coloured gouaches (14×9.5 cm) pasted on the page facing the opening of the text, showing a small warship at a shipyard in a small harbour being repaired by workmen. Contemporary red morocco, gold-tooled spine, gold-tooled fillets on boards and board edges, richly gold-tooled frame, gilt edges. Frontispiece plus [2], 26 ll., including 2 double and 1 larger folding. Splendid vellum manuscript on the condition and organisation of the French Royal Navy of King Louis XV in the year 1732, including maritime data on the French colonies in Canada, Louisiana and the West Indies. The manuscript is beautifully calligraphed in a formal roman and italic in brown-black, red and blue, sometimes with gold covering the ink, with 2 decorated initials in gold over red. The use of the high quality vellum, the fine gouache illustration, the lavishly executed calligraphy and the beautiful contemporary binding, indicate that the manuscript must have been produced for an important person, probably a head of the marine or an official at the court. The manuscript gives a complete survey of the size and organisation of the French navy of the Ancien Regime in 1732 and must have been top secret at the time! From the library of the well-known art historian and book collector Henri Beraldi (1849-1931). GUARINI, Giovanni Battista.
Il pastor fido, tragicommedia pastorale ... Editione nuova, arricchita di curiose, ed utili annotazioni, e riveduta, e corretta da A.P.D.A.Amsterdam, Franco Soudaan, 1732. 4to. Contemporary richly gold-tooled red morocco, with an elaborate arabesque central ornament in a triple panel design, crowned ornaments, flowers, acorns and stars, richly gold-tooled turn-ins, dark green title label, marbled endpapers, gilt edges (so-called "Bird's Head Bindery", Amsterdam). [24], 319 [= 316] pp. Rare and finely produced edition of Giovanni Battista Guarini's (1538-1612) famous pastoral drama Il Pastor Fido, here of special interest for its fine binding by the so-called "Bird's Head Bindery", Amsterdam. The design is exceptionally rich but light for a Dutch binding from the period. The spine compartments show a charming lozenge with the head of a girl carrying a basket of flowers and the outer frame on the sides shows birds among leafy sprays. The four corners on each board show a fine carnation (t. 28). This Amsterdam bindery probably started its activities ca. 1728 with work for the book collector Gosuinus Uilenbroek (1658-1714). Storm van Leeuwen notes that "the Bird's Head Bindery made many presentation bindings that were definitely or probably commissioned by publishers." The "richness of execution and the Amsterdam publisher" of the present work "indicate that it may have been a presentation copy" (Storm van Leeuwen). In very good condition with the binding slightly rubbed, corners slightly bumped, scratch across lower part of front board.

The manuscript is generally in fine condition, with only an occasional minor spot or small sta … [Click Below for Full Description]
