The opening chapters are devoted to an examination of the sources of law in general, and trace the history and development of the Civil, Canon and Feudal laws. If Craig had accomplished no more than that he would have been entitled to a foremost place amongst our jurists, for unquestionably the form of his book not only exemplified the philosophical outlook of the learned Scots lawyer, but provided a model of construction and treatment for his successors" Black, The Institutional Writers 62-63.         An Enquiry Into the Origin of Honour, and the Usefulness of Christianity in War. By the Author of the Fable of the Bees

London: For John Brotherton. 1732. First Edition. Hardcover. Contemporary sprinkled calf rebacked with five raised bands and contrasting spine label bearing gilt titles, armorial crest pasted to front pastedown, endpapers a little browned else internally clean and bright. A very nice copy. ESTC: T59021, Bernard Mandeville (1670-1733) is most famous as the author of "The Fable of the Bees" (1714) in which he dissects human nature and concludes that the human vices, as much as any virtues, are essential to a well ordered society. Mandeville claimed that he wasn't recommending vice to individuals, only observing that many of the values of the society in which he lived, such as the increase of trade, imperial ambition, even politeness, were incompatible with virtue and innocence. A second part of the Fable (1729) was followed by this work, in which Mandeville expands on his thinking about 'honour' as a sort of perverted false courage. While true courage might be a virtue, honour has its roots in pride and shame and so is seen as a useful device in the socialisation of humans. Mandeville's anti-clericalism is revealed in his account of how a perverted version of the truly peaceful doctrine of Christianity, making use of concepts of honour and duty, can be used to motivate soldiers. , 8vo, [2] xi [9] 240 pp .

To the Right Honourable John Lord Sommers...this Map of North America according to ye newest and most exact observations

London: "Sold by H. Moll ... I. Bowles ... T. Bowles ... P. Overton ... and by John King ...", [circa 1732]. Copper-engraved map, period handcolouring in outline. Inset view of a codfishery, ten inset maps of various harbors. 25 3/8 x 38 3/4 inches. Moll's great "Codfish" map of North America Hermann Moll was, like many an emigré, a zealously patriotic Englishman and cartographical fighter in the globalization contest the European nations conducted from the 15th century into the 20th. Here in one of his superbly characteristic maps of North America, he fights with De L'Isle (the great French mapmaker of the period) about the respective territorial possessions of Britain and France. In contradistinction to De L'Isle's 1718 map, Moll's reduces French Louisiana to a region south of the Ohio River and gives Great Britain Labrador (as New Britain). The achievement of British dominance would be accomplished through trade, colonialization, war and piracy. Depicting one aspect of British success, Moll includes here a rather detailed depiction of the codfishing industry, including the making of cod liver oil. Throughout the 17th century, the British had the greatest number of fishing boats in the Grand Banks. Dried codfish was a staple of the British Navy, and a favorite throughout Europe. As naval supremacy requires good charts, this map has ten inset charts of important North and South America ports: from Boston to Cartagena. And finally, for the benefit perhaps of any would-be British privateer , Moll includes (as he did in his map of the West Indies) detailed information about the annual Spanish convoy that wound around the Gulf of Mexico picking up silver, gold and gems from South and Central America. Moll's "maps of North America and the Eastern Seaboard must have played an important role in shaping the geographical perception of the Americas held by his contemporaries, emphasizing the untaped resources and the wealth of the colonies, and the opportunities for any that would make the passage" (Baynton-Williams). The present map was part of Herman Moll's magnificent folio work, A New and Compleat Atlas. Moll was the most important cartographer working in London during his era, a career that spanned over fifty years. His origins have been a source of scholarly debate; however, the prevailing opinion suggests that he hailed from the Hanseatic port city of Bremen, Germany. Joining a number of his countrymen, he fled the turmoil of the Scanian Wars for London, and in 1678 is first recorded as working there as an engraver for Moses Pitt on the production of the English Atlas. It was not long before Moll found himself as a charter member of London's most interesting social circle, which congregated at Jonathan's Coffee House at Number 20 Exchange Alley, Cornhill. It was at this establishment that speculators met to trade equities (most notoriously South Sea Company shares). Moll's coffeehouse circle included the scientist Robert Hooke, the archaeologist William Stuckley, the authors Jonathan Swift and Daniel Defoe, and the intellectually-gifted pirates William Dampier, Woodes Rogers and William Hacke. From these friends, Moll gained a great deal of privileged information that was later conveyed in his cartographic works, some appearing in the works of these same figures. Moll was highly astute, both politically and commercially, and he was consistently able to craft maps and atlases that appealed to the particular fancy of wealthy individual patrons, as well as the popular trends of the day. In many cases, his works are amongst the very finest maps of their subjects ever created with toponymy in the English language. This copy an issue published around the time of Moll's death, with the imprint including John Bowles located "at the Black Horse" (1732 and later).         Relation du voyage de la mer du sud

Paris,: Chez Nyon, Didot, Quillau, 1732.. Quarto, with 22 maps and plans and 15 engraved plates and views; library stamps on title and final leaf of text, perforated stamps in centre of title and dedication leaf, else a good copy in contemporary dark calf, spine gilt in compartments between raised bands, head of spine neatly restored. The second French edition (first 1716), of note for its additional material in the form of a substantial 63-page supplement which contains FrÈzier's lengthy reply to criticisms levelled at the first edition by Father Louis FeuillÈe as well as a chronology of the viceroys of Peru.'FrÈzier, a French royal military engineer, was under contract to sail to the Spanish possessions in South America to construct forts for defence against English and Dutch attacks. The French government also ordered him to chart the western coast of South America in order that they would have some knowledge of that area for possible military operations. The first part of the book gives an interesting account of the voyage from France around Cape Horn and was used by contemporary and even by later navigators. The second part relates to the voyage along the coasts of Chile and Peru, describing the chief towns and cities. FrÈzier, a man of observation, brought back information of considerable geographical and scientific value. Much data is included about the native inhabitants...' (Hill).FrÈzier sailed under the Horn to reach the west coast of South America, and his description and maps (especially those of the west coast anchorages) were much used by later navigators. He gives good descriptions of Chile and Peru. One of his odder claims to fame is that he introduced the strawberry to Europe from Chile. It is illustrated here.'FrÈzier, a French royal military engineer, was under contract to sail to the Spanish possessions in South America to construct forts for defence against English and Dutch attacks. The French government also ordered him to chart the western coast of South America in order that they would have some knowledge of that area for possible military operations.         Philosophia Rationalis Sive Logica, Methodo Scientifica Pertractata Et Ad Usum Scietiarum Atque Vitae Aptata. Praemittitur Discursus Praeliminaris De Philosophia in Genere

Libraria Rengeriana, 1732-01-01. Hardcover. Very Good. A handsome book. 4to. [16], 866, [18] pp. 1 folding plate. 22 x 18 cm. Contemporary vellum. Excellent binding. Clean, unmarked pages. Minor toning. Latin. <br>Christian Wolff was a Rationalist philosopher of the German Enlightenment. Wolff is regarded as the central historical figure who linked the philosophical systems of Leibniz and Kant. â&#128;&#156;According to Kant, in the â&#128;&#156;Prefaceâ&#128;&#157; to the Critique of Pure Reason (2nd ed), Wolff is â&#128;&#156;the greatest of all dogmatic philosophers.â&#128;&#157; Wolff&#39;s â&#128;&#156;strict methodâ&#128;&#157; in science, Kant explains, is predicated on â&#128;&#156;the regular ascertainment of principles, the clear determination of concepts, the attempt at strictness in proofs, and the prevention of audacious leaps in inferencesâ&#128;&#157; (Kant, 1998, 120). Like many other philosophers of the Modern period, such as Descartes, Hobbes, and Spinoza, Wolff believed the method of mathematics, if properly applied, could be used to expand other areas of human knowledge. The influences of Wolffâ&#128;&#153;s systematization of philosophy include the early Kant, Alexander Baumgarten, Samuel Formey, Johann Christoph Gottsched, Martin Knutzen, Georg Friedrich Meier, and Moses Mendelssohn.â&#128;&#157; (Matt Hettche, Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, 2006)

Aubry de la Mottraye was a French traveller (c. 1674-1743) who lived for many years in England because of his religion (he was a Huguenot). In 1696 he set off on travels which were to last 26 years, initially to the Scandinavian countries where he became a close confidant of Charles XII; he then went on to Tartary, and to Turkey where he settled for some years in Constantinople. When he returned to England he received a pension from King George I and published the first two volumes of his book in London in English in 1723. These two volumes were not translated into French until 1727. He then continued his travels taking in Prussia, Russia and Poland and his descriptions formed a third volume which was first published in 1732 in English and also in French. There was a second edition of the English 2 volume set in 1730 but all the English editions are rare, especially the third volume. The plates are all by English engravers depicting architecture, antiquities, costumes, scenes and customs. Some of them were engraved by William Hogarth but all of those are missing from this set. Cox, Literature of Travel, Volume I, page 78 quotes Lowndes: "Veracity and exactness, particularly so far as regards the copying of inscriptions, characterise these travels. They are valuable also for the information respecting the mines of northern Europe". On page 221 in the near East section: "Motraye&#39;s close association with the unfortunate Charles XII of Sweden... makes him an authority of the first rank on the Scandinavian&#39;s sojourn in Turkey. The life of the miserable king of Hungary, Tokoly, whom Motraye sought out in Nicomedia, could be rewritten with the aid of this tireless reciter&#39;s account. Besides he was a good witness of all that went on in Turkish society at Constantinople and elsewhere." (quoted from Iorga, Les Voyageurs Francais"). Cox does not list the 1732 first edition of Volume III, only an edition of 1733 published at the Hague. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING. POSTAGE AT COST.

Recüeil de Plusieurs Plans des Ports et Rades et de Quelques Cartes Particulieres de la Mer Mediterranée,

[?Paris,], 1732-46. Avec Les Figures des Terres Remarquables Pour Les Reconnoissances des Atterrages &#133; Quarto (340 × 270 mm). Contemporary calf, gilt arms to both boards of Charles-Eugène-Gabriel, marquis de La Croix de Castries, secretary of state for the navy from 1780 to 1787, and after 1783 marshal of France, rebacked with the original spine laid down, new red morocco label, raised bands, floral and foliate devices in the compartments, French fillet gilt panel to the boards, double rule edge-roll, marbled endpapers. Engraved title, 70 double-page engraved charts, of which four are folding and two are printed on one mapsheet, and 10 double-page engraved coastal profiles. A little rubbed, slight streaking on the boards, light toning, some offsetting and occasional spotting, but a very good copy. First and only edition of this uncommon collection of charts, OCLC records just six copies outside of France, together with multiple listings for the BNF. Represents a remarkably detailed, practical pilot for the Mediterranean, produced by the French hydrographer Jacques Ayrouard, it is seldom encountered complete. A working "waggoner" for the coast, recording soundings, anchorages, pilotage notes on rocks and reefs, and with a series of coastal profiles as a further aid to navigation. Large folding map of Marseilles, and accurate charts of most of the ports, harbours and bays of the region, most notably of Monaco, which is the first printed chart to depict the Mediterranean city-state. This pilot would subsequently be drawn on by numerous hydrographers, most notably William Heather who cites Ayrouard in his New Mediterranean Pilot of 1802. Ayrouard dedicates his work to Jean Frédérick Phélypeaux Comte de Maurepas who held the position of secretary to the royal household and minister of the navy in the court of Louis XV, and was prominent in attempts to introduce a more scientific approach to naval affairs until he was exiled in 1749 for writing derogatory epigrams about the king&#39;s mistress, Madame de Pompadour. The Conseil de la Marine, for whom this work appears to have been produced, had been founded in 1720 as a central depository for maps, plans, journals, and memoirs relating to navigation. Of the hydrographer, Ayrouard, little is known beyond the brief details he gives on the title page where he describes himself as "Royal pilot of the King&#39;s Galleys," and explains that these charts were prepared by him on voyages that he undertook on the coast, leading him to add further pilotage notes for the safe entry into certain of the harbours and roads ["avec les Remarques necessaires qu&#39;il faut observer pour l&#39;entrée á Certains Ports et autres Endroits"]. Similarly, the engraver of these superbly-detailed charts, Louis Corne, was known to Tooley solely from this work. It would seem possible that this was very much a local production, that hydrographer and engraver were brought together under the aegis of the conseil de la marine to produce this practical pilot for the benefit of visiting French naval ships.

London: Printed by assignment from Messrs. Churchill, 1732.. Gower (1694- 1754) was a notable British Tory politician of the 18th century, a member of the Privy Council, and a member of a powerful aristocratic family long influential in British politics. This is the second edition of this significant collection of voyages, and an important continuation of the work of Hakluyt and Purchas. "This is a very valuable collection, both for its range and for the fact that it gives the original accounts" - Cox. Among the accounts included that relate to America are Brawern and Herckemann&#39;s voyage to Chile in 1642-43; Capt. John Monck&#39;s voyage to Hudson&#39;s Straits in 1619-20 to discover a passage between Greenland and America to the West Indies; Nieuhoff&#39;s travels in Brazil; Capt. John Smith&#39;s TRUE TRAVELS AND ADVENTURES IN EUROPE, ASIA, AFRICA AND AMERICA DURING THE YEARS 1592- 1629; the journal of a sailor who wintered at Spitzbergen in 1633-34; an account of Greenland by La Peyrere; James&#39; search for a northwest passage in 1631-32; Ovalle&#39;s HISTORICAL RELATION... of Chile; Techo&#39;s history of the provinces of Paraguay, Rio de la Plata, Parana, Chile, Guaira, and Urvaica; Barbot&#39;s relation of Guiana; Col. Norwood&#39;s voyage to Virginia in 1609; John Gatonbe&#39;s VOYAGE FOR A NORTH- WEST PASSAGE in 1612, among others. Extensively illustrated with fine copper plate engraved maps and plates, many showing eastern ports and harbors, native peoples, natural history specimens, plants, etc. Although Sabin describes this 1732 second edition as containing "new title- pages only" in comparison with the first edition of 1704/32, in fact the pagination for the first four volumes is entirely different. In 1672 he was sent to Constantinople and in 1679 he was appointed French consul at Aleppo. He familiarised himself with the languages of the regions he resided in, and learned to speak Arabic, Turkish, Persian, Hebrew and Syriac languages. As well as the topics listed in the title, d'Arvieux describes food and eating habits, clothing, marital customs, hospitality, respect for the beard, courts of justice and forms of law, employment and trade, horses, medicine, and funerals. The plates which are all in the first part depict an Arab horseman, The Grand Emir, The Camp of the Arabs on Mount Carmel near the city of Caifa, The Princess Wife of the Grand Emir. The second part of this work is a general geographical description of the Arabian Peninsular followed by brief descriptions of the principal cities starting with Mecca and Medina.         Philosophia Rationalis Sive Logica, Methodo Scientifica Pertractata Et Ad Usum Scietiarum Atque Vitae Aptata. Praemittitur Discursus Praeliminaris De Philosophia in Genere

Libraria Rengeriana 1732 - A handsome book. 4to. [16], 866, [18] pp. 1 folding plate. 22 x 18 cm. Contemporary vellum. Excellent binding. Clean, unmarked pages. Minor toning. Latin. Christian Wolff was a Rationalist philosopher of the German Enlightenment. Wolff is regarded as the central historical figure who linked the philosophical systems of Leibniz and Kant. ?According to Kant, in the ?Preface? to the Critique of Pure Reason (2nd ed), Wolff is ?the greatest of all dogmatic philosophers.? Wolff's ?strict method? in science, Kant explains, is predicated on ?the regular ascertainment of principles, the clear determination of concepts, the attempt at strictness in proofs, and the prevention of audacious leaps in inferences? (Kant, 1998, 120). Like many other philosophers of the Modern period, such as Descartes, Hobbes, and Spinoza, Wolff believed the method of mathematics, if properly applied, could be used to expand other areas of human knowledge. The influences of Wolff?s systematization of philosophy include the early Kant, Alexander Baumgarten, Samuel Formey, Johann Christoph Gottsched, Martin Knutzen, Georg Friedrich Meier, and Moses Mendelssohn.?

Mandeville claimed that he wasn&#39;t recommending vice to individuals, only observing that many of the values of the society in which he lived, such as the increase of trade, imperial ambition, even politeness, were incompatible with virtue and innocence. A second part of the Fable (1729) was followed by this work, in which Mandeville expands on his thinking about &#39;honour&#39; as a sort of perverted false courage. While true courage might be a virtue, honour has its roots in pride and shame and so is seen as a useful device in the socialisation of humans. Mandeville&#39;s anti-clericalism is revealed in his account of how a perverted version of the truly peaceful doctrine of Christianity, making use of concepts of honour and duty, can be used to motivate soldiers. , 8vo, [2] xi [9] 240 pp .

Arithmetica universalis; sive De compositione et resolutione arithmetica liber.

Apud Joh. et Herm. Verbeek bibliopolae, Lugduni Batavorum [Leida]. MDCCXXXII [1732]. [8], 344 p., XIII c. di tav. inc., 4° (28 cm), cart. Frontespizio stampato in rosso e nero. Marca (Motto: Varietas delectat) calcogr. sul front. Iniziali e fregi xil. Title printed in red and black. Engraved vignette on title plus 13 folding engraved plates. Arithmetica universalis was first printed in Latin in Cambridge in 1707 and based on lecture notes by Newton for the period 1673 to 1683. There is no record of the lectures ever being present, but these form an important complement to Newton?s Principia composed at the same time. William Whiston prepared the first edition which also included Halley?s method of finding roots of equations arithmetically. Newton covers the essentials of algebra: notation, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, extraction of roots, reduction of fractions, reduction of geometrical questions to equations, and resolution of equations. In addition, Newton extended Descartes? rule of signs to imaginary roots. He also formulated a rule to determine the number of inaginary roots of any equation. The rule was complicated and offered without proof. Some idea of its originality is shown by the fact that it took another 180 years before the rule was proven by rigorous analysis. This continental edition was the first edited by ?Gravesande and includes additional treatises by Halley, Colson, DeMoivre, Maclaurin, and Campbell. There is also an Appendix: De Solutione et Constructione Aequationum Scripta Varia, extracted from the Phil. Trans. Babson 204; Gray 279; Wallis 279. Please also see my other Newton listings.

A Letter from South Carolina; Giving an Account of the Soil, Air, Product, Trade, Government, Laws, Religion, People, Military Strength, &c. of that Province; Together with the Manner and necessary Charges of Setling [sic] a Plantation there, and the Annual Profit it will produce ... The Second Edition

London: J. Clarke, 1732. 8vo. (7 1/4 x 4 1/2 inches). 63,[1]pp. Later marbled paper wrappers. Scarce South Carolina promotional tract anonymously written by the first Indian Agent to Carolina. This work presents "an unusually fine account of the fur trade, Indian relations, and the activities of the French west of the mountains. As to accuracy of observations, style, organization and presentation, it is one of the finest accounts of colonial South Carolina. Nairne ... had advocated the planning of a Swiss colony west of the Savannah, but he was never able to accomplish this objective, since the Yamassees burned him at the stake in 1715" (Clark). Styled the "Second Edition" on the titlepage, this is in fact the third edition, after those of 1710 and 1718. The attribution of authorship has frequently been debated. Others have suggested that the author was Jean Pierre Purry, though it is more likely that he was the recipient of the letter. Nairne, one of the great figures in the early history of South Carolina, was appointed "Agent and Itinerary Justice Among the Indians" in 1707. Sabin 87861; Howes N5 "B"; Clark I:128.

        September 1732

[from "Twelve Months of Fruit"]. London: Robert Furber, 1732. Copper engraving by Henry Fletcher after Casteels, contemporary hand-colouring. Expert restoration to margin. 18 5/8 x 15 inches. A marvellous cornucopia of real fruit. Robert Furber was a nurseryman with gardens near Hyde Park gate in Kensington, and for many years a churchwarden at St. Mary Abbot's, Kensington. Following on from the success of his Twelve months of Flowers catalogue (first published in 1730), Furber employed the same methods two years later, when publicising the wide range of fruit that he could provide to the great gardens of England: each plate depicts different arrangements of fruit 'arranged on or around bowls, dishes, or baskets ... from the apples and pears of January and February to the cherries, currants, mulberries, plums, peaches, strawberries, and other soft fruit of June ... [A total of 364 varieties] are shown, each one numbered in reference to the names printed below each picture. By the name of each variety is a letter S, D, E, or W, for standard, dwarf, espalier, or wall, and indicating its habit of growth and most productive method of treatment' (Oak Spring Pomona p.65). This plate (like all the others in the series) is based on the incomparable paintings of Pieter Casteels (1684-1749) who came from Antwerp and settled in London in 1708. Between 1708 and 1735 (when he retired from painting) Casteels enjoyed great success with his paintings of nature: birds, flowers and, as here, fruit. Cf. Dunthorne 117; cf. Henrey III, 734; cf. Nissen BBI 765; cf. Oak Spring Pomona 26.

Les avantures de M. Robert Chevalier, dit de Beauchene, Capitaine de Flibustiers dans la Nouvelle France

Rare first edition of this narrative of piracy in Canada, considered a holly fictional account. 1732. Paris. Etienne Ganeau. Two volumes in 12mo (160 mm x 95 mm). 1 [blank] + 9 ff. + 390 + 1 [blank]; 1 [blank] + 4 ff. + 363 + 1 [blank] + 6 engraved plates. Contemporary mottled calf, elegantly gilt spines with red morocco lettering pieces, hinges split but holding firm, head of spines chipped. Remarkably fresh and clean copy. Rare first edition of Le Sage´s biography; although considered by some as a wholly fictional account of a privateer?s adventures during the French and English wars in Canada, there is some evidence to the contrary, in fact, he is said to have been born near Montreal (a baptismal record was found at Montreal for a Robert Chevalier, whom it is believed later became the sieur de Beauchene, later killed by the English at Tours in 1731). Beauchene?s memoirs manuscript was apparently given by his widow to Le Sage, celebrated for his authorship of Gil Blas. Illustrated with 6 engraved plates by J.B. Scotin after Bonnard; Cohen-de-Ricci call for 4 plates. Cohen-de-Ricci, 635. Sabin 4163.
