A Collection of Voyages and Travels

London: John Walthoe, 1732. Eight volumes, folio, two works in matching binding, some 213 engraved plates including work by Herman Moll, Johannes Kip, and others (many double-page or folding), engraved and woodcut illustrations throughout; a handsome set in late eighteenth-century Russia, marbled edges. Churchill's great voyage collection, complete. A splendid set of the two great voyage anthologies of the early eighteenth century, in handsome contemporary matched bindings. This setcontains the Churchill anthology in its second improved edition and the first edition of the supplementary Osborne series, better known as the "Harleian" or "Oxford Voyages".Copies of the various editions of the Churchill Collection, in particular, do appear on the market from time to time, but almost always in dilapidated condition - the result of their substantial size and the use that they were subjected to as the major source for voyage information in the early eighteenth century. This copy is in superb condition, the bindings bright and the text and plates remarkably fresh. The substantial volumes contain many accounts of voyages to a great many places, a number of accounts appearing for the first time, or at least for the first time in English. Originally published in 1704 in four volumes, it appears here in its second, much augmented six-volume edition. The success of the work is a reflection of an audience keenly interested in what was a time of energetic exploration and trade expansion throughout the world. For example, the first volume here contains descriptions of the lands and peoples of China, Formosa, Japan, the Congo, and South Africa, lands just beginning to be known to Europeans, as well as accounts of relatively less mysterious but still unfamiliar places such as Egypt and the Ukraine. The final two volumes of the Churchill anthology contain materials new to this edition. The fifth volume is devoted largely to Africa, containing accounts of the lands which in the seventeenth century were called Guinea and Lower Ethiopia, but which in fact include the entire coast from Senegal through Angola. Native life, European settlements, animals, natural products, and much more are described in great detail. There is also a translation from the Spanish of Herrera's account of the discoveries of Columbus. The contents of the other volumes are varied, with reports of the Solomon Islands, Dutch shipwrecks in the East Indies, Ovalle's work on Chile (with a fine depiction of the Southern Cross), Virginia, attempts to discover a Northwest Passage, the sages of India, and the land of Tonqueen, now North Vietnam, among very many other reports. Much of the third volume is Baldaeus' work on the East Indies translated from the Dutch, while Nieuhoff's work on the East Indies, also translated, appears in the second volume. The plates are of special appeal, often showing very striking scenes of exotic life, particularly in tropical climes. They include detailed depictions of natives involved in sometimes fascinating activities (witchcraft, elephant catching) as well as many plates of botanical and zoological interest and a number of views of harbours or military engagements. This set is supplemented by the two-volume work by Thomas Osborne, generally known as the "Harleian Voyages" or the "Oxford Voyages". These two very scarce volumes were published by Osborne from the unpublished manuscripts in the collection of the earl of Oxford. Although separately published much later, the two Osborne volumes are often described as a supplement to the Churchill collection of voyages.Osborne's first volume comprises travels mainly in the Near and Middle East, while the second volume comprises voyages to India, East Asia, the East Indies, Africa, and North America. The maps are after Dutch cartographer Herman Moll and the frontispiece map in the second volume is "A Chart of the East Indies..." with the north and north-west coasts of Australia delineated in accordance with Dutch discoveries.

La Theorie, et la Pratique du Jardinage

1732. DEZALLIER D'ARGENVILLE. La Theorie, et la Pratique du Jardinage. [8], 293, [11] pp. With 38 folding engraved plates, plus numerous textual diagrams and illustrations. 4to., 250 x 182 mm., bound in contemporary French mottled calf, spine gilt, red label. Paris: Jean Mariette, 1732. |~||~||~||~||~||~| Dezallier's Theory and Practice is the major work on the theoretical aspects of eighteenth-century gardening. The evolution and design of Pleasure Gardens would be entirely different had this work not been written and so often and widely published. It codified the French Formal Garden style in the spirit of Le Nôtre, and it was "the first important book on garden design to appear in England in the eighteenth century" (Henrey). Dezallier's work owes its widespread reputation to the creative use of natural and ornamental elements. The text concentrates on the use of bridges, colonnades, and trellises in the design of the garden, as well as the use of groves, mazes, parterres, bosquets, and fountains. Dezallier gives specific information on the construction of each, offering practical advice on how to integrate these elements into overall garden design. This edition is embellished with thirty-eight folding plates and numerous textual illustrations. According to the 'Avis' in the 1747 Paris edition, most of the drawings for the plates were provided by Alexandre Le Blond (1679-1719), an able French architect who studied under Le Nôtre (Le Blond's name appears as the author on the title-page in error). With some soiling; overall a fresh and crisp copy with browning to a couple of pages, but overall in near-fine condition. Hunt 471. Henrey 1426.

The original was first performed at the Paris Opéra (Théâtre de lÂ’Académie Royale de Musique) on June 8, 1787. 2 volumes. Octavo. Full marbled boards with morocco title label gilt to spine. Most items with decorative woodcut devices, and head- and tailpieces. Bindings slightly worn, rubbed, bumped and chipped; edges slightly worn and browned. . An unusually comprehensive collection of rare plays, ballet scenarios, and vaudevilles based on Beaumarchais's famous comedy, La Folle Journée, ou Le Mariage de Figaro. The works, many of which were composed and premiered shortly after the first public staging of Le Mariage (1784), attest to the immediate and wide-spread influence of Beaumarchais's comedy. Of special note are those items (nos. 5, 6, 11, 12, and 14) which contain vaudevilles––simple, strophic songs––or "airs"––often topical or satirical in nature. "These songs for dancing, drinking and satire became a national pastime. Since everyone knew the tunes, they were transmitted orally and usually not printed in the numerous 17th- and 18th-century collections of ‘historicalÂ’ songs about life in Paris and the court... Vaudeville tunes soon became dissociated from their original words and could be re-used by any rhymer; they were known by an identifying tag or ‘timbreÂ’ which consisted usually of part of a refrain or, often, of nonsense syllables, if these existed in the original text... Comedy using vaudeville tunes with new words was one of the new theatrical styles that caught the imagination of the Paris public in the late 17th and early 18th centuries... Originally vaudevilles made up the bulk of the music used in these comedies, supplemented by short opera excerpts which quickly invaded the vaudeville repertory, dances and instrumental interludes. Composers were employed to organize a small orchestra, work with the playwrights in selecting appropriate vaudevilles, and eventually to write original songs, called ariettes. Serious attempts were made to select vaudevilles that best represented the emotional state of the play at the point they were to be introduced, either through the tune itself or by recalling or re-using part of the original text. A clever choice could underscore a situation forcefully, or even contradict it in a humorous way. Double meanings abounded." The so-called comédie en vaudevilles spawned an independent genre––the opéra-comique––and spread to England as the ballad opera, and to Germany as the Singspiel." Lanlaire is a parody of Tarare, an opera by Salieri with original libretto by Beaumarchais. The original was first performed at the Paris Opéra (Théâtre de l?'Académie Royale de Musique) on June 8, 1787. 2 volumes. 5, 6, 11, 12, and 14) which contain vaudevilles?-?-simple, strophic songs?-?-or "airs"?-?-often topical or satirical in nature. "These songs for dancing, drinking and satire became a national pastime. Since everyone knew the tunes, they were transmitted orally and usually not printed in the numerous 17th- and 18th-century collections of ?'historical?' songs about life in Paris and the court... Vaudeville tunes soon became dissociated from their original words and could be re-used by any rhymer; they were known by an identifying tag or ?'timbre?' which consisted usually of part of a refrain or, often, of nonsense syllables, if these existed in the original text... Double meanings abounded." The so-called comédie en vaudevilles spawned an independent genre?-?-the opéra-comique?-?-and spread to England as the ballad opera, and to Germany as the Singspiel."         RICERCHE ISTORICHE SULLA PROVINCIA DELLA GARFAGNANA. Esposte in varie dissertazioni dal Dott. Domenico Pacchi, Pubblico Professore di Filosofia in Castelnovo.

Opera dedicata al Cav. Girolamo Tiraboschi. Cm.23,5x18. Pg.VIII, 224, CXXVIII. Legatura in piena pergamena rigida. Tagli spruzzati.

Kitab-i Cihannüma. [Jihan-numa, The mirror of the world].

Constantinople, Ibrahim Müteferrika, 3 July 1732.. Folio (305 x 215 mm). (22 [instead of 28]), 698 pp. (final page trimmed to text and remargined completely), each page within single rule border added in red. With ornamental headpiece, hand-coloured and raised in gilt, 13 (4 double-page-sized) engr. plates and celestial maps, and 27 engr. geographical maps, all in contemp. hand colour. Contemp. black morocco with fore-edge flap, blindstamped with ornamental cornerpieces and central star-and-crescent design.. First edition. Almost unobtainable thus with 40 maps and plates: Koeman mentions a total of merely 37 maps and plates; Shirley cites 27 maps (including one of the celestial hemispheres) and an unspecified number of "other prints". Even the British Library copies (Oriental and India Office Collections, Or.80.a.10 and a.7) have one map fewer than ours. - Includes the famous map of the Arabian peninsula drawn by Ahmed Al-Qirimi, based on Sanson's 1654 map, but with important changes. Tibbetts depicts this rarest and most desirable map of Arabia - the first ever to be printed with captions in Arabic - as the frontispiece of his groundbreaking bibliography of "Arabia in Early Maps". "This map can be seen as a mixture of Eastern and Western cartographic experiments of the 17th century. It was the first scientific map published in the Islamic world. Its details include data on the names of the towns, watercourses, and topographical features. The Red Sea is labelled bahr Swis (Sea of Suez) and the Arabian Gulf is labelled Basra kurfazi (Gulf of Bassora)" (Khaled Al Ankary). - For his famous universal Islamic geography, the Ottoman scholar Katib Chelebi (1609-57) drew on Mercator's and Hondius's "Atlas Minor" as well as other Western sources. "Of the utmost interest both as the best-known work of Ottoman geographical literature and as the document of a pivotal moment in the history of ideas" (Wolff). Printed at the first Turkish press by Ibrahim Müteferrika, a Hungarian convert to Islam, who completed Katip's unfinished work, hitherto circulated in manuscripts only, and had the maps specially engraved for it. "In a report given to the Academie after the Danish expedition of Niebuhr, it is stated that D'Anville's main sources for Arabia in his Asia map were the Geographies of Idrisi and Abu'l Feda, and the 'Jihan-numa' of Katib Chelebi" (Tibbetts, p. 29). - Wants 3 leaves of preliminary matter; final leaf shaved closely, preserving text, and mounted on later backing paper. Occasional brownstaining, reinforcements, edge defects and remarginings (very occasionally touching letterpress text: larger tears to pp. 500f., 616f., 620f., 682f.); two waqf stamps on p. 56; Arabic marginalia on pp. 317, 611, and 691. Two maps bound head-over-heels; several maps show paper flaws and/or old reinforcements on the reverse. Of the utmost rarity when found with all maps as present. We could not trace a complete copy in libraries worldwide (the Houghton copy at Harvard also wants 2 pages of text and the celestial map, inter alia), and all copies recorded at auction within the last decades were incomplete as well. - Shirley T.KAT-1.         A Voyage to Arabia Fœlix,

London: E. Symon,, 1732. by way of the Eastern Ocean, and the Streights of the Red Sea, being the First made by the French in the Years 1708, 1709, and 1710. Together with a Particular Account of a Journey from Mocha to … the Court of the King of Yaman... Also a Narrative concerning the Tree and Fruit of Coffee. Collected from the Observations of those who made the last Voyage; and an Historical Treatise of the Original and Progress of Coffee … To which is added, An Account of the Captivity of Sir Henry Middleton at Mokha, but the Turks, in the Year 1612, and his Journey from thence to Zenan, or Sanaa, the Capital of the Kingdom of Yaman … Octavo (195 × 119 mm) Contemporary panelled calf, neatly rebacked to style with red morocco label. 2 folding engraved plates of the coffee plant at the rear, woodcut initials and head-pieces. Somewhat rubbed, professional restoration at the board edges, light browning, a very good copy. Second, and preferred, edition in English, the first was in 1726, some 10 years after the first French. La Roque's father, a Marseilles merchant, had travelled with Jean de la Haye's Turkish embassy of 1639-41, then on to the Levant bringing back coffee and coffee-making equipment, "which he kept for his own use in Turkey [and which] passed then for a real curiosity in France … The drink remained something of a local curiosity until 1699 when emissaries of Sultan Mohammed IV came to Paris bringing with them sacks of the curious bean. By the time the ambassadors departed in May 1670 coffee-drinking had become widespread..." (Howgego). La Roque had made an extensive study of Oriental languages, but had never travelled further than the Levant, however he saw an article in "the new Mercury printed at Trevoux" which gave an account of a voyage of 1708-10 to Arabia, and made contact with the commander of the voyage, Godefroy de la Merveille, working up an account from de Merveille's letters and papers and those of Major de la Grelaudière and M. Barbier, the ship's surgeon, relating to the subsequent voyage. The intention of these missions had been "to intercept the trade in coffee before the beans reached the markets of Egypt and Turkey". To this La Roque's appended an extensively-researched essay on the botany and cultivation of coffee and his historical overview of the spread of the beverage. This is widely seen as the first scholarly treatise on the subject, and from La Roque's standpoint was an excellent promotional ploy. The present edition also includes an account of Sir Henry Middleton's period of captivity as a hostage in Yemen.
