[n.p., Ausburg]: [n.p., Christian and Martin Engelbrecht], 1730. - Scarce, Early Forerunner to Peepshow BooksYet "Engelbrecht's Work is Beyond Compare"[PEEP-SHOW BOOK aka Miniature Theater]. ENGELBRECHT, Martin (designer and engraver). [German Village Street Scene. Oktoburfest Celebrants Carouse and Make Merry]. [N.p., Ausburg]: [n.p., Christian and Martin Engelbrecht], [n.d., c. 1730]. Number thirty-six in an ongoing series of unknown total, complete, as issued. Six hand-colored, hand cut-out copperplate engravings (6 1/2 x 8 in; 167 x 204 mm) mounted on cardboard, each signed Cum Priv. S.C. Maj. (left corner), Mart. Engelbrecht excud. A.V," (right corner) and "36" (center). On the rear to each is a contemporary holograph "36-298" and number, 1 through 6, by the same hand. When consecutively mounted and arranged front to back within a display box the cut-out plates create a 3-D perspective scene. Minor edgewear, a bit of soiling as expected. Numbers two and four with early reinforcement to rear, otherwise an excellent set. Considering that it was used for entertainment purposes, it is startling to have survived the past 279 years. There are no auction records in ABPC for any of Engelbrect's peepshows/miniature theaters within the last thirty-five years and library holdings are near absent for any of them; none at all for this tableau. Housed in a custom miniature theater display box within an elegant protective case.Artist Martin Engelbrecht (1684-1756) and his brother Christian were printsellers and engravers in Augsburg, Germany during the eighteenth century. Martin Engelbrecht engraved some plates after Rugendas and other masters. His other works included illustrations for Ovid’s Metamorphoses, The War of Spanish Succession, Les Architectes Princiers by P. Decker, 92 views of Venice, and a series of prints of workers and their dress, Assemblage Nouveau Des Manouvries Habilles, published at Augsburg, circa 1730. Also in about 1730, he created cards for miniature theaters, which when inserted into a display box showed religious scenes and pictures of daily life in perspective view. Engelbrecht's miniature theaters or dioramas were the forerunners of the peepshow books popularized by Dean & Son of London during the mid-nineteenth century, and have been cited by photographers and cinematographers for their early optical effects and appreciated as an aid to creating dramatic perspective on film."A celebrated engraver of his time, Engelbrecht dominated the print trade in Augsburg. Best known for his portraits of monarchs as well as his intricate landscapes, Engelbrecht's work is beyond compare. Some of his best work was with optical prints. He used these in his perspective boxes and miniature theatres. Typically 8 cards would be inserted into a peepbox, consecutively, which provided imagery similar to that of a theatre scene, or play. The view had great perspective. (The History of the Discovery of Cinematography, Precinema)."In the 18th century dioramas became very popular as a means of entertainment. Around 1730, the Augsburg copperplate engraver and publisher Martin Engelbrecht created miniature theater[s]. [They] consist of 5-8 scenery-like sheets, which create a perspective image if arranged one behind the other. Along with religious themes, these scenes show courtly life, the seasons. These small-size dioramas are regarded as the precursors of the paper theaters that became popular in the 19th century." (Deutsches Historisches Museum)."The first true movable books published in any large quantity were those produced by Dean & Son, a publishing firm founded in London before 1800. By the 1860's the company claimed to be the 'originator of childrens' movable books in which characters can be made to move and act in accordance with the incidents described in each story.' From the mid-19th century Dean turned its attention to the production of movable books and between the 1860's and 1900 they produced about fifty titles. Insula Ceilon olim Taprobana. Carte de L'Isle de Ceylan

Incisione in rame, coloritura coeva, in ottime condizioni. Bibliografia: Koeman, C&M 7, 91. Dimensioni 585x480. Guillaume de l'Isle (1675 - 1726) was the son and pupil of the cartographer Jean Dominique Cassini, who, among other important contributions, aligned the study of astronomy to the study of geography. Under Cassini's direction, observations were made from locations all over the world that enabled longitudinal calculations to be made with much greater accuracy. De l'Isle carried on this exacting work with remarkable dedication and integrity, constantly revising and improving his maps. While precision was his primary goal, his maps are invariably elegant and attractive. Jean (Johannes) Covens and Corneille (Cornelius) Mortier were brothers - in - law, who carried on the book publishing business established by Pierre Mortier in Amsterdam in 1685. Pierre Mortier's company owed much of its success to his access to French publishers, whose publications he re - issued in handsome editions. The elder Mortier died in 1711; his wife continued the firm until she died in 1719. In 1721, Covens and Mortier formed a partnership, Covens having married Agatha Mortier in the same year. They continued the business by publishing enlarged editions of Sanson, Jaillot, and De L'Isle, as well as some of the later Dutch cartographical masters such as De Wit and Allard, and of course Pierre Mortier. This map is from an edition of De L'Isle entitled, Atlas Nouveau, Contenant Toutes Les Parties Du Monde, Ou sont exactement Remarquées les Empires, Monarchies, Royaumes, Etats, Republiques &c. Par Guillaume de l'Isle. Premier Géographe de sa Majesté. It delineates the island in great detail. At the time the map was made, the coastal areas were ruled by the Dutch East Indian Company, who were undoubtedly responsible for the soundings indicated around the island and for mapping the roads depicted. Copper engraving, contemporary colour, in perfect condition. Amsterdam Amsterdam Koeman, C&M 7, 91. Dimensioni 585x480.

Diversi Globi Terr-Acquei Statione Variante et Visu Intercedente per Coluros Tropicorum, per Ambos Polos, et Particul. Sphaerae Zenith in Planum Delineati Orthographici Propectus.

Augsburg 1730 - Incisione in rame, coloritura originale d'epoca con ricchi e fascinosi cartigli in bianco nero. Mm 495x576. Ottimo esemplare. Buon esemplare con margini reintegrati e piccolo restauri agli angoli. Copperplate, original colour. Mm 495x576. Very good example in fine colour. This map-world depicts the world in two hemispheres surrounded by twelve globes and twenty-four allegorical wind heads. California appears as an island, the west coast is missing, Australia is incomplete. It first appeared in Seutter's Atlas Novus between 1728 and 1730. Seutter, one of the most celebrated eighteenth century German mapmakers, after having worked with Homann in Nuremberg, started his own business in Augsburg around 1710. His maps always have elaborate cartouches and are very decorative and printed on good paper. New margins added and some restoration at corners. Phillips, Atlases 583:3 or 593:2. Shirley 578n

Bibliotheca Lambertina: seu Catalogus Librorum Bibliothecae Nicolai Lambert

Woodcut arms of Lambert on title. 2 p.l., xii, 376, [32] pp. 8vo, 19th-cent. maroon morocco, double gilt fillet round sides with gilt crowns in each corner, central arms in gilt on each cover of Joaquín Gómez de la Cortina, Marqués de Morante, spine lettered in gilt, many lower edges untrimmed. Paris: G. Martin, 1730. A fascinating copy, heavily annotated throughout in two contemporary hands, of this uncommon sale catalogue of the library of Nicolas Lambert (1666-1729), councillor to the Parlement of Paris and a high government official. This was a fine general library, rich in the best 17th and 18th-century editions of history, geography, and law. One of Martin's scarcest catalogues; 3169 lots with an excellent authors' index at end. This is perhaps the most heavily annotated auction catalogue we have ever encountered. Two hands are at work here. The first has very largely priced the catalogue. The second, smaller hand has filled many of the margins with details of additional items sold not in the printed catalogue, with prices; corrections and additions to the printed lots; and other bibliographical details. Fine copy. With the leather bookplate of Gomez de la Cortina, one of the greatest Spanish bibliophiles of the 19th century, and A.R.A. Hobson. ❧ Bléchet, pp. 82-83. Grolier Club, Printed Catalogues of French Book Auctions...1643-1830, 33. Guigard, II, p. 279. Peignot, p. 106. .

De Morbo Gallico, Treatise of the French Disease bound with The Force of the Mother's Imagination upon Her Foetus in Utero

Thomas Warner; John Clarke; J. Walthoe, [et al.], London 1730 - 2 volumes in 1. Hardcover. [12], 110, [2] p.; 192 p. Bound in contemporary Cambridge-style leather. 4 raised bands. Good binding and cover. Wear to extremities. Signature on title page, corner of title pages removed to excise another signature. Pages lightly tanned, with scattered foxing and toning. Surg-Gen. Daniel Turner (1667-1741) was a London surgeon best known for his treatment of venereal disease and other diseases of the skin, later recognized as one of the founders of British dermatological studies, had become engaged in a pamphlet war with James Blondel on maternal powers of imagination shortly after the Mary Toft scandal, in which a women stated she gave birth to rabbits in 1726. Blondel took aim on a new chapter in Turner?s 1726 Third Edition of "De Morbis Cutaneis. A Treatise of Diseases Incident to the Skin." Blundell confuted the plastic power attributed to the imagination of the mother during pregnancy and twelfth chapter of the treatise by Daniel Turner, devoted to maternal fancy as the cause of molae, and the theory in general. This dispute would continue for the next 4 years, with Blundell advocating the ovist and preformationist position (associated with Harvey), in which all parts of the fetus already exist in the egg before conception. Turner and the imaginationists would employ Newtonian ideas and terminology to show that a thoughts and imagination would affect their offspring and such actions, especially birthmarks on children could not be removed. 12 Bl., 613 S., 1 Bl. Mit gestoch. Frontispiz. Gr.-8°. Halbpergamentbd d. Z.

Leipzig, Bernhard Christoph Breitkopf, 1730. – VD18 11394609; Goed. III 361, 38; Faber du Faur 1762 (ohne Frontispiz). Vgl. Jantz 1167 ff (nur spätere Ausgaben). [Attributes: First Edition]

The tables along the sides identify and describe the constellations on the chart.Homann was born in Oberkammlach near Kammlach in the Electorate of Bavaria. Although educated at a Jesuit school, and preparing for an ecclesiastical career, he eventually converted to Protestantism and from 1687 worked as a civil law notary in Nuremberg. He soon turned to engraving and cartography in 1702 he founded his own publishing house. Homann acquired renown as a leading German cartographer, and in 1715 was appointed Imperial Geographer by Emperor Charles VI. Giving such privileges to individuals was an added right that the Holy Roman Emperor enjoyed. In the same year he was also named a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Of particular significance to cartography were the imperial printing privileges (Latin: privilegia impressoria). These protected for a time the authors in all scientific fields such as printers, copper engravers, map makers and publishers. They were also very important as a recommendation for potential customers. In 1716 Homann published his masterpiece Grosser Atlas ueber die ganze Welt (Grand Atlas of all the World). Numerous maps were drawn up in cooperation with the engraver Christoph Weigel the Elder, who also published Siebmachers Wappenbuch. Homann died in Nuremberg. He was succeeded by the Homann heirs company, which was in business until 1848. The company was known as Homann Erben, Homanniani Heredes, or Heritiers de Homann abroad.

Drapier's Letters is the collective name for a series of seven pamphlets written between 1724 and 1725 by the Dean of St Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin, Jonathan Swift, to arouse public opinion in Ireland against the imposition of a privately minted copper coinage that Swift believed to be of inferior quality. William Wood was granted letters patent to mint the coin, and Swift saw the licensing of the patent as corrupt. In response, Swift represented Ireland as constitutionally and financially independent of Britain in the Drapier's Letters. Jonathan Swift (1667 – 1745) was an Anglo-Irish satirist, essayist, political pamphleteer (first for the Whigs, then for the Tories), poet and cleric who became Dean of St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin. Swift is remembered for works such as Gulliver's Travels, A Modest Proposal, A Journal to Stella, Drapier's Letters, The Battle of the Books, An Argument Against Abolishing Christianity and A Tale of a Tub. He is regarded by the Encyclopædia Britannica as the foremost prose satirist in the English language, and is less well known for his poetry We find this same book for sale elsewhere for over $1,905! Contemporary vellum (some skilfull repairs). The first important German treatise on insects' (Miall p. 240). Johann Leonard Frisch (1666-1743) was director of a Berlin gymnasium and author of several dictionaries. He is remembered as the introducer of the mulberry into Prussia. The present work was issued over a period of 18 years describing some 300 different insects. The fine plates were engraved after Frisch's own drawings, some by Philip Jacob his son./'Frisch was a careful and diligent observer, bent not merely upon observing, but upon interpreting the facts of structures and habit. He takes one insect at a time, describes its external features, figures it in all stages, if possible, and tells all that he has been able to discover about its mode of life' (Miall pp. 240-1). It is very rare to find a fine copy of this book, which is mostly found in poor condition, like the present copy. Our copy is somewhat browned and the upper margins at the beginning and end of the book have been grawned by mice, not affecting the text. The first part is a second issue as is often the case with this book, the other parts are in the first issue.//Hagen I, 254; Nissen ZBI, 1436; Miall, L.C., The early naturalists, their lives and work (1580-1789), pp. 240-244).
