De Morbo Gallico, Treatise of the French Disease bound with The Force of the Mother's Imagination upon Her Foetus in Utero

Thomas Warner; John Clarke; J. Walthoe, [et al.], London, 1730-01-01. Hardcover. Good. 2 volumes in 1. Hardcover. [12], 110, [2] p.; 192 p. Bound in contemporary Cambridge-style leather. 4 raised bands. Good binding and cover. Wear to extremities. Signature on title page, corner of title pages removed to excise another signature. Pages lightly tanned, with scattered foxing and toning. Surg-Gen.

Daniel Turner (1667-1741) was a London surgeon best known for his treatment of venereal disease and other diseases of the skin, later recognized as one of the founders of British dermatological studies, had become engaged in a pamphlet war with James Blondel on maternal powers of imagination shortly after the Mary Toft scandal, in which a women stated she gave birth to rabbits in 1726. Blondel took aim on a new chapter in Turner’s 1726 Third Edition of "De Morbis Cutaneis. A Treatise of Diseases Incident to the Skin." Blundell confuted the plastic power attributed to the imagination of the mother during pregnancy and twelfth chapter of the treatise by Daniel Turner, devoted to maternal fancy as the cause of molae, and the theory in general. This dispute would continue for the next 4 years, with Blundell advocating the ovist and preformationist position (associated with Harvey), in which all parts of the fetus already exist in the egg before conception. Turner and the imaginationists would employ Newtonian ideas and terminology to show that a thoughts and imagination would affect their offspring and such actions, especially birthmarks on children could not be removed. 1730 1ed Drapier Letters by Jonathan Swift Ireland Numismatics Hibernian Patriot

[London] : Printed at Dublin. London: reprinted and sold by A. Moor in St. Paul's Church-Yard, and the Booksellers of London and Westminster, MDCCXXX. [1730] - 1730 1ed Drapier Letters by Jonathan Swift Ireland Numismatics Hibernian Patriot Very Important Irish Economics compare@$2,000 Originally the Drapier’s Letters were issued in pamphlet form, but today virtually unobtainable. This very rare collected edition was published in London, five years after the Dublin first edition published by George Faulkner in 1725. Drapier's Letters is the collective name for a series of seven pamphlets written between 1724 and 1725 by the Dean of St Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin, Jonathan Swift, to arouse public opinion in Ireland against the imposition of a privately minted copper coinage that Swift believed to be of inferior quality. William Wood was granted letters patent to mint the coin, and Swift saw the licensing of the patent as corrupt. In response, Swift represented Ireland as constitutionally and financially independent of Britain in the Drapier's Letters. Jonathan Swift (1667 – 1745) was an Anglo-Irish satirist, essayist, political pamphleteer (first for the Whigs, then for the Tories), poet and cleric who became Dean of St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin. Swift is remembered for works such as Gulliver's Travels, A Modest Proposal, A Journal to Stella, Drapier's Letters, The Battle of the Books, An Argument Against Abolishing Christianity and A Tale of a Tub. He is regarded by the Encyclopædia Britannica as the foremost prose satirist in the English language, and is less well known for his poetry We find this same book for sale elsewhere for over $1,905! Contemporary vellum (some skilfull repairs). The first important German treatise on insects' (Miall p. 240). Johann Leonard Frisch (1666-1743) was director of a Berlin gymnasium and author of several dictionaries. He is remembered as the introducer of the mulberry into Prussia. The present work was issued over a period of 18 years describing some 300 different insects. The fine plates were engraved after Frisch's own drawings, some by Philip Jacob his son./'Frisch was a careful and diligent observer, bent not merely upon observing, but upon interpreting the facts of structures and habit. He takes one insect at a time, describes its external features, figures it in all stages, if possible, and tells all that he has been able to discover about its mode of life' (Miall pp. 240-1). It is very rare to find a fine copy of this book, which is mostly found in poor condition, like the present copy. Our copy is somewhat browned and the upper margins at the beginning and end of the book have been grawned by mice, not affecting the text. The first part is a second issue as is often the case with this book, the other parts are in the first issue.//Hagen I, 254; Nissen ZBI, 1436; Miall, L.C., The early naturalists, their lives and work (1580-1789), pp. 240-244).

Francesco and Andrea Zucchi were responsible for the copperplate engraving for this work: The title-page bears a copperplate vignette, with four other copperplate vignettes and one decorated capital present as well as the oversized, folding plate. Giulio Cesare Becelli edited and introduced this collection of Maffei's plays, providing what Gamba calls "tre erudite prefazioni." The author was an archeologist and man of letters whose tragedy Merope (present here) achieved enormous popularity in not only his native Italy but also almost every country where translations appeared, including France, England, Germany, and Holland. Contemporary vellum over paste boards, outer edges yapp, spine with hand-inked title; vellum torn and partially lost over lower edge of front cover, with signs of wear and small spots of staining elsewhere. Ex-library, front pastedown with Italian institutional bookplate; yet volume otherwise free of markings. Title-page verso with affixed scrap of paper. Intermittently occurring light dampstaining in upper margins; otherwise clean.

Museum sinicum in quo Sinicae linguae et litteraturae ratio explicatur

St. Petersburg: Typographia Academiae Imperatoriae, 1730. The First Book on the Chinese Language Published in EuropeBayer, Theophilus [Gottlieb] Siegfried (1694-1738). Museum sinicum in quo sinicae linguae et litteraturae ratio explicatur. 2 vols. in 1, 8vo. [22], 145, [1], 190; [2], 372, [2, including errata]pp. 23 numbered plates plus 52 full-page text engravings. St. Petersburg: Ex typographia Academiae Imperatoriae, 1730. 198 x 123 mm. Old vellum, title stamped on spine. Minor offsetting from plates, but fine otherwise. Embossed stamp of the British and Foreign Bible Society on front endpaper. First Edition of the first book on the Chinese language published in Europe. Bayer, a classical scholar, was professor of Greek and Roman antiquities at St. Petersburg’s Academy of Sciences between 1726 and 1737. At the age of nineteen he was “overwhelmed with a desire to learn Chinese” and spent the next seventeen years studying and collecting everything he could find relating to the language with the intent of “[making] up some kind of dictionary and some introduction to the rules of the Chinese language and to Chinese literature” (quoted in Spence, Chinese Roundabout: Essays in History and Culture, p. 3). This was an extremely difficult task, as the Jesuits, who were the first Europeans to gain a foothold in China, had a quasi-monopoly on Sino-European relations and thus had a proprietary interest in keeping information about the Chinese language to themselves. “In the course of time, however, a few Jesuits visiting Europe came to give away some bits of the secret, and two or three copies of handwritten missionaries’ dictionaries had found their way into great libraries” (Lundbaek, p. 2). Bayer made use of what information he could find to compile his Museum sinicum, which included not only his attempt at a Chinese dictionary and grammar, but a 145-page introduction containing a history of Western Chinese studies up to the time of writing. "There are two things that need to be said [about the Museum sinicum]: It was not possible to learn to speak or read Chinese from Bayer’s book; secondly, Bayer was perfectly and painfully aware of that fact and states it many times in his book. "Why then publish it? Bayer felt, and he was supported in this feeling by his old friend the great Lacroze in Berlin, as well as by his new friend Theophanes, the learned archbishop of Novgorod, that it was his duty to do so. There were no books about the Chinese language on the market. He had had access to information about that language because he had happened to study in the Royal Library in Berlin, where some handwritten material about the Chinese language was kept. It was not very much and in spite of all his endeavors, Bayer certainly did not come to “know Chinese.” But he felt that he simply had to arrange the information he had gathered together, to collect his thoughts and sit down and write a text that could be printed and published, thus making it possible for others to go on with his work" (Lundbaek, p. 5). Lundbaek, T. S. Bayer (1694-1738): Pioneer Sinologist, pp. 1-7.

Inside with only minor foxing. The plates clean and fresh. Jacques Callot was a baroque printmaker and draftsman from the Duchy of Lorraine (an independent state on the north-eastern border of France, southwestern border of Germany and overlapping the southern Netherlands). He is an important person in the development of the old master print. He made more than 1,400 etchings that chronicled the life of his period, featuring soldiers, clowns, drunkards, Gypsies, beggars, as well as court life. He also etched many religious and military images, and many prints featured extensive landscapes in their background. His most famous prints are his two series of prints each on "the Miseries and Misfortunes of War". These are known as Les Grandes Misères de la guerre, consisting of 18 prints published during 1633, and the earlier and incomplete Les Petites Misères — referring to their sizes, large and small (though even the large set are only about 8 x 13 cm). These images show soldiers pillaging and burning their way through towns, country and convents, before being variously arrested and executed by their superiors, lynched by peasants, or surviving to live as crippled beggars. At the end the generals are rewarded by their monarch. During 1633, the year the larger set was published, Lorraine had been invaded by the French during the Thirty Years' War and Callot's artwork is still noted with Francisco Goya's Los Desastres de la Guerra (The Disasters of War), which was influenced by Callot, as among the most powerful artistic statements of the inhumanity of war. Petropoli, Ex typographica academiae Imperatoriae, 1730., 1730.
