SCARCE Primary Source Manuscript Transcript - Aristotle's Metaphysics - Text in Latin

Rome, 1730. Rome, 1730. Manuscript transcript of a cerebral and notable lecture on Aristotle's Metaphysica, made and given by philosophical teacher and Jesuit priest Father Jean Antoine Timoni (1690-1761), penned in a fine cursive hand by Timoni's pupil Joseph Lupius de Margon at the Roman College. Text is in Latin. 8vo. 677 pages, plus 7 page index, on laid watermarked paper. Brown calf boards, five raised bands and elaborate gilt tooling to spine, gilt title to spine, marbled edges and marbled endpapers. Volume measures approximately 14 x 20 x 4,5 cm. Some wear to boards, otherwise Very Good, original condition. An exceedingly scarce primary source document. "Bibliothèque de la Compagnie de Jésus", by renowned bibliographer and Belgian Jesuit Augustin de Backer and French Jesuit scholar Carlos Sommervögel, records only one printed version of this lecture. However, a devoted and little-known eighteenth century student at the Roman College for Jesuits, attentively and meticulously transcribed the dissertation given in 1730 at the Collegio del Gesù in Rome by a distinguished Jesuit philosopher, teacher and lecturer, Father Jean Antoine Timoni (1690-1761), bestowing upon us a rare survivor of the era, and an excellent primary source manuscript work. Title: "Pars Prima Metaphysica ad mentem Aristotely et Angelici doctory Divi Thoma Aquinaty Dictata A Lectore Plurimum Ado Patie Joanne Antonio Timoni Societatiy Jesu In Celebérino Collegio Romano Philosophie Lectore Conscripts A Josepho Lupiy de Margon Alumno Coll: Germa: Anno MDCCXXX". [On Metaphysics and the Mind-set of Aristotle and Virtuous Doctor Thomas Aquinas, Given by Joanne Antonio Timoni of the Society of Jesus, in the Most Celebrated Roman College, a Philosophical Lecture Transcribed by Alumni Josepho Lupiy de Margon, ... 1730.] In this comprehensive lecture Timoni presents intellectual perspectives surrounding metaphysics, in other words, existence, environment, possibility, and all related aspects of the concept of 'being.' He presents the early and fascinating views of Aristotle, and also of thirteenth century priest Thomas Aquinas who supported Aristotle in his theories. Twelve pertinent "questions" are discussed, and for all intents and purposes answered, with the philosophical positions of the two aforementione men whose writings were highly respected and compatible with the canonical teachings of the Catholic faith. Priest Jean Antoine Timoni (1690-1761), also seen as Johann Anton Timoni, Joanne Antonio Timoni) was born on the Greek island of Chios. He joined the Society of Jesus in Rome in 1706 as a novice. As a teacher, and sometimes also as a rector, he held regular philological and philosophical lectures at the prestigious Collegio del Gesù [Roman College of the Jesuits) situated in the Pigna District of Rome. Timoni contributed significantly to the education of novice members of the religious order. He was made vicar in 1757. He approved the publication of the work on Asceticism by Scaramelli, "Direttorio Ascetico," after having it reviewed by a committee of theologians. He continued to lecture and teach until his death. A fine and rare specimen of novitiate education at the Jesuit College in Rome in the 18th century. St Thomas Aquinas O.P. (1225-1274), Tommaso d'Aquino, was an Italian Dominican friar, Catholic priest, and Doctor of the Church. He was an immensely influential philosopher, theologian, and jurist in the tradition of scholasticism, within which he is also known as the Doctor Angelicus and the Doctor Communis. He was the foremost classical proponent of natural theology and the father of Thomism. His influence on Western thought is considerable, and much of modern philosophy developed or opposed his ideas, particularly in the areas of ethics, natural law, metaphysics, and political theory. Unlike many currents in the Church of the time, Thomas embraced several ideas put forward by Aristotle, whom he called "the Philosopher. "He attempted to synthesize Aristotelian philosophy with the principles of Christianity. The works for which he is best known are the Summa Theologiae and the Summa contra Gentiles. His commentaries on Scripture and on Aristotle form an important part of his body of work. Greek philosopher and scientist Aristotle (384-322 BC) wrote on numerous subjects, many subjects, including physics, biology, zoology, metaphysics, logic, ethics, aesthetics, poetry, theater, music, rhetoric, linguistics, politics and government. His work constitutes the first comprehensive system of Western philosophy. In metaphysics, Aristotelianism profoundly influenced Judeo-Islamic philosophical and theological thought during the Middle Ages. It continued to influence Christian theology, especially the Neoplatonism of the Early Church and the scholastic tradition of the Roman Catholic Church. Aristotle was well known among medieval Muslim intellectuals and revered as "The First Teacher." Aristotle's philosophies continue to be the object of active academic study today. . Very Good.

Cm. 23, pp. xxiv, 558 + (2) d'errata. Bell'antiporta allegorica, frontespizio in rosso e nero con vignetta centrale, eleganti testate, finali e capolettera.

This detailed town plan of Madrid, Spain by Johann Baptist Homann, depicts the city in incredible detail. Identifies streets, palaces, gardens, rivers, and important landmarks throughout. The scale cartouche features a vignette of three figures dressed for the Masquerade gathered around a fountain.

Long 12mo (150 x 67 mm). [24], 621, [3] pp. Engraved frontispiece, additional engraved title, letterpress title in red and black, 10 engraved emblematic plates, the engravings by Johann-Benjamin Brühl. Bericht an die Buchbinder, listing the plates, at end. Contemporary German "sharkskin" (rayfish) binding, covers with mounted silver frames with repoussé decoration of leafy and geometrical strapwork, shells, and eight small heads, two fore-edge clasps with repoussé decor including a putto playing a flute, inner clasps with mark SMR and date 1734, gilt edges, Dutch-gilt floral pastedown endpapers.***A luxury copy of a popular devotional manual and hymnal. First printed in 1685, Rittmeyer's "Heavenly Repast of Joy" enjoyed lasting success. The author (identified in this edition at the end of the foreword) was a preacher from Helmstadt. All editions were illustrated, using the heart motif whose origins lie in the 16th-century religious emblems of Antoine Wierix's Cor Iesu Amanti Sacrum. This edition appears to be the first illustrated by the Leipzig engraver Johann-Benjamin Brühl (1691-1763) (the previous edition from this press, published in 1628, had engravings by A. Reinhard). The engraved title shows Jesus dining with the apostles, surrounded by humble onlookers. The frontispiece is a Crucifixion, with mourners below including Old Testament personnages (Adam and David), each identified by an engraved caption. The engravings show the heart as a symbol of the soul, and its progress under the influence of the infant Jesus, whose exact actions are succinctly described in their titles: Jesus knocks on the heart (containing a closed door); holding a lantern illuminating rats and scorpions, Jesus examines the heart; Jesus, sweeping, cleans the heart, etc. Engraved above each heart vignette is a Biblical quote, and below a German verse caption. The work was a staple of the Stern press in Lüneburg from 1728 to the late 1760s. Known as galuchat in French, "sharkskin" was often in fact rayfish skin. It is far more durable than the shagreen used in 19th-century imitations, and was used for luxury bindings in Germany, often in combination with silver onlays. This edition not found in OCLC; KVK refers to an entry in the Union Catalog Southwest Germany, location not given.

        Il carro di Apollo

"Chiaroscuro woodcut, printed in blue tones on black lines, from four blocks. On contemporary laid paper, in very good condition. Engraved by Nicolas Lesueur after a drawing executed by Paolo Farinati, showing Apollo and Phaethon in chariot drawn by four horses. The plate is from the series ""Recueil d'estampes d'après les plus beaux tableaux et d'après les plus beaux desseins qui sont en France"". Also known as 'Recueil Crozat', is a series of plates commissioned by the collector Pierre Crozat and reproducing famous paintings and drawings of the era; 140 plates were published in 1729. A second volume formed by 42 prints (instead of the 110 plates initially planned) was issued in 1740. After Crozat's death, the plates were sold to a company of booksellers who commissioned Mariette to reorganize the 'Recueil'; Mariette divided the plates into two volumes, added some missing descriptions, and advertised the set to the public in 1742. In 1764, Basan bought the plates and the text, and republished the 'Recueil', but replaced the woodcuts by intaglio prints. Basan also published the 45 plates reproducing the Italian paintings from the collection of the Duc d'Orléans in a volume entitled 'Recueil d'après la gallerie du palais royal'" Le Blanc 23 272 397

Contemporary German "sharkskin" (rayfish) binding, covers with mounted silver frames with repoussé decoration of leafy and geometrical strapwork, shells, and eight small heads, two fore-edge clasps with repoussé decor including a putto playing a flute, inner clasps with mark SMR and date 1734, gilt edges, Dutch-gilt floral pastedown endpapers.*** A luxury copy of a popular devotional manual and hymnal.

Anicius Manlius Torquatus Severinus Boetius, His Consolation of Philosophy, In Five Books Translated into English

Printed for W. Causton 1730 - B01M8JJ9A2 1730 first edition, printed for W. Causton (London), 5 1/8 x 8 inches tall full leather bound, gilt lettered red leather label to spine, marbled endpapers, title page printed in black and red, [8], xxxv [i.e. xxxiii], [1], 161, [1] pp. (pages xv-xvi omitted from the pagination; text is continuous) Recently re-backed with Pearce archival calf spine over original gilt-ruled boards, with refreshed English marbled endpapers. Original boards a bit rubbed and edgeworn with some bumping and fraying to the tips. Quarter-inch closed tear to fore edge of blank front free-endpaper. A few pages with slight creasing and a couple of small edge chips. Otherwise, a very good copy - clean, bright and unmarked - of this scarce early eighteenth century English translation of The Consolation of Philosophy (De Consolatione Philosophiae), a work by the sixth-century philosopher Boethius that has been described as having had the single most important influence on the Christianity of the Middle Ages and early Renaissance and as the last great work of the Classical Period. Reference: English Short Title Catalog No. T143750; OCLC No. 4975483. ~GG~ The translator here, William Causton, first sets forth a brief biography of Boethius and an account of the Consolation, paying tribute to the translations of Chaucer and Richard Graham, first Viscount Preston. The subscriber's list at the outset of the volume includes the name of Edward Gibbon, Esq., quite likely the grandfather of the historian (Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire) of the same name. The author of The Consolation, Anicius Manlius Severinus Boethius (circa 480-524/525 AD), was a scholar and philosopher born in Rome to an ancient and prominent family which included emperors and many consuls. His father, Flavius Manlius Boethius, was consul in 487 after Odoacer deposed the last Western Roman Emperor. Boethius entered public life at a young age, was a senator by the age of 25 and became a leading counselor to Ostrogothic king Theoderic, who ruled Italy from 493 to 526. In 523, at the height of his influence, Boethius was accused by fellow-senators of plotting against the king, imprisoned in Pavia and executed in 524. While jailed, Boethius composed this, his De Consolatione Philosophiae, in which he sought through philosophy to come to terms with the vicissitudes of fortune and the apparent triumph of evil. Written in Latin prose interspersed with more lyrical passages in verse, it takes the form of a dialogue between Boethius and philosophy, personified as a woman. It became one of the most popular and influential works of the Middle Ages. Several manuscripts survived and these were widely edited, translated and printed throughout the late 15th century and later in Europe. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Hanoch, die Erste Statt der Welt. [Prague, J. Hiller, c. 1730?].

1730. Folio (271 x 493 mm). Broadsheet with 5 engravings and two columns of letterpress. Extremely rare, uncommon print describing the legendary Biblical city of Enoch, the "first city of the world", founded by Cain and named after his first son (cf. Gen. 4:17). The centre of the sheet shows a large (264 x 152 mm) view of the city (workmen erecting the walls in the background; Cain's family farming in the foreground), with numerous animals including elephants and lions. The smaller engravings to the left and right (130 x 85 mm each) show pumpkins ("Pepones"), a white falcon, a crane, and several marine animals (including a seal, dolphin, and sand flea). To the left and right of these are columns of letterpress text describing the city in eight twelve-line verses. - The style of the view is obviously closely related to the illustrations familiar from the Prague engraver Jan Hiller (active 1716-46, cf. Dlabacz, Allgemeines Künstlerlexikon für Böhmen I, 628-631), who also provided the plates for Myller's "Peregrinus in Jerusalem", a work that not only contains several topographical views, but also botanical and zoological illustrations. The Myller plate "La Ragna, die Meer-Spinne" shows several of the marine creatures depicted here in exactly the same fashion: clearly, Hiller re-used his work for the present broadsheet. This conclusion is further supported by the fact that the five plates evidence varying degrees of wear: while the large, central illustration shows good, strong contrast, the other four are markedly fainter. - Mounted on sturdy paper, probably by a near-contemporary collector; trimmed close to the plate edges. Slight brownstaining.
