2 Teile in 1 Band.

XXII, 367 S. 1 Bl., 302 S. 8 (16,5 x 10,5 cm). *Goedeke IV/1, 592, 1. Borst 224. Günther/Zeilinger 1375.

Album with 202 original visiting-cards from the 1780's -- 82 cards have autograph signatures of their owners, on 33 the name of the card-holder is printed and further 87 cards have no name on it. -- Extremely rare and exceptional contemporary collection of 18th century visiting cards.

Contemporary Boards. Gr-8. 100 numbered leaves with 202 mounted visiting cards. -- Visiting cards became popular at the beginning of the 18th century in Italy, around 1730 in France and later in all over Europe. In 18th century Europe, the footmen of aristocrats and royalty would deliver these first European visiting cards to the servants of their prospective hosts solemnly introducing the arrival of their owners. Visiting cards became an indispensable tool of etiquette, with sophisticated rules governing their use. The essential convention was that one person would not expect to see another person in his own home (unless invited or introduced) without first leaving his visiting card for the person at his home. Upon leaving the card, he would not expect to be admitted at first, but might receive a card at his own home in response. This would serve as a signal that a personal visit and meeting at home would be welcome. On the other hand, if no card was forthcoming, or if a card was sent in an envelope, a personal visit was thereby discouraged. -- This album contains cards of (Karl Anselm) von Thurn und Taxis (1733-1805) Principe di Marsiconuovo (Giovanni) Marchese de Serpos (Miguel de Torres Ruiz) Marquis de Matallan (1737-1817) (Erbeto) Mirelli of Malta (John) Irwin (1728-1788) his wife (Caroline) Irwin (*1750) Capitano di Marina Agostino del Bene Giuseppe Gualengo Monsieur de Campos Le President du Roi de Sardaigne Le Ministre Plenipotentaire de sa Majeste Tres-Fidele l'Abbé de la Feuillie Marchese della Giummarella General Comte d'Alet Marquis Manara (Ministre) Le Comte F. de Cattaneo (Consul General) Cavalieri Rombenchi Incaricato de Reali affari di Napoli Mr. de Fillie - Consul General de Russie Giuseppe Firrao (Cardinal, 1736-1830) Filippo Armano Prince (Peter) Obulensky (1743-1822) of Russia Francesco Aglietti (1757-1836) Abbe Comte de Montalban Franco di Montalban (Pierre Paul de Meredieu) Baron de Naillac (1737-c1813) Constantin Zacco Bardaxi Secretaire di Legazione di Spagne (Leonardo) de Miniscalchi - Chevalier de Malta Minister of Poland Ministre plénipotentiaire of Russia Ambassador of Spain Aurelio Dadini Pietro Paolo Donati Chevalier (William?) Stapleton Consul of Spain Lady Sophia Butler (daughter of the late Earl of Lansborough) Princess (Maria Esterhazy de Galanta) Grassalkovich (1739-1820) Giovanni Cattaneo / Glogow Monsieur Lopez de Ulloa Ambassadeur de France (Maria Josepha ) von Khevenhüller (1742-1814) (married to Karl Borromaeus Breuner v. Enkevoirt) Comte de Clam-Gallas Marquesse Agdallo - Eletore di Sassonia (wife of Aloys Peter don Agdallo) Chevalier de las Casas Luigi Braschi-Onesti - Duca di Nemi (1745-1816) - (nephew of Pope Pius VI) Stachieff (Russia) Giacomo Sceriman Monsieur de Wind - Chambellan de sa Majesté le Roi de Denmark Mr. Massenet Mr. Schluter (Theodor) von Salzmann - Minister von Brandenburg, Ansbach und Bayreuth Comte de Montezan Baron de Weichs (Clemens August von Weichs?) Monsieur le Comte de Tattenbach Grand Marechal Graf von Tattenbach Lambertenghi etc. -- as also ministers, consuls, secretaires etc. of Sicily, Spain, Naples, Russia, Poland, etc. -- 13 of the cards are signed in the plate by the painter/engraver 14 of the cards are blind embossed cards (all other cards are copper-engravings), some are printed in color. -- A few cards have the handwritten date "Turin 1786" on it, the place and date when they were given to the former owner. -- Certainly one of the largest collections of visiting cards from the 18th century. -- Extremely rare.

The map, engraved for Seutter by Gottfried Rogg, shows the whole of the Americas, North and South with California as an island. the map has full orignal wash colour designating the kingdoms and provinces; colored lines showing the routes of explorers in the Pacific with the dates of their voyages and a host of other information. Very large decorative vignettes around title and text to upper and lower left corners. Good dark impression; bright colour light dampstain to side and lower margins just entering image at bottom; lower marginshort [3-7mm] Seutter, Matthäus (The Elder): 1678–1757, Seutter was an engraver, globe-maker and publisher. Born in Augsburg in 1685, the son of a goldsmith. Seutter began his studies in Nuremberg in 1697, apprenticed as an engraver to Johann Baptist Homann. in 1707 later he returned to Augsburg subsequently working in the publishing house of Jeremias Wolff in the city. He founded the Seutter publishing house and print shop in 1710, producing maps, atlases, and globes., which became a primary competitor to Homann. Very few original maps were printed there, as Augsburg at that time had no university and none of the necessary connections to the fields of mathematics or the natural sciences. Therefore Seutter copied the work of other cartographers, making his own engravings based on their models (approximately 500 pieces). His "Atlas Geographicus oder Accurate Vorstellung der ganzen Welt' appeared in 1725 with 46 maps: the "Atlas Novus" various editions in 1728, 1730, 1736, 1742; the "Grosser Atlas" in 1734 with 131 maps, and the pocket atlas "Atlas minor in 1744 with 64 maps. After Matthäus Seutter died in 1757, his son, Albrecht Karl, his son-in-law Conrad Tobias Lotter, and his business partner Johann Michael Probst ran the business for five more years. McLaughlin 211; Tooley, 91 p.132. Americas Continent North and South America California as island

A NEW AND EXACT MAP OF THE DOMINIONS OF THE KING OF GREAT BRITAIN ON YE CONTINENT OF NORTH AMERICA CONTAINING NEWFOUNDLAND, NEW SCOTLAND, NEW ENGLAND, NEW YORK, NEW JERSEY, PENSILVANIA [sic] MARYLAND, VIRGINIA AND CAROLINA. ACCORDING TO THE NEWEST AND MOST EXACT OBSERVATIONS BY HERMAN MOLL GEOGRAPHER

London: Printed and Sold by Tho: Bowles next ye Chapter House in St. Pauls Church-yard, John Bowles, at the Black Horse in Cornhill and by I. King at ye Globe in ye Poultrey [sic] near Stocks Market, 1730. Copper-engraved map, with period outline hand-coloring, on two joined sheets. Overall size of joined sheets: 41 1/4 x 25 inches. Very good. The famous Beaver map: Stevens and Tree's third state (of five), the first to show the inset of Carolina divided into counties and with named parishes. "One of the first and most important cartographic documents relating to the ongoing dispute between France and Great Britain over boundaries separating their respective American colonies....The map was the primary exponent of the British position during the period immediately following the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713" - DEGREES OF LATITUDE. The British colonies according to British claims are outlined in alternating red and yellow, with the French outlined in blue. All territory south of the St. Lawrence River and eastern Great Lakes is shown as British. Numerous notations relating to territorial claims, Indian tribes, the fur trade, and the condition of the land cover the face of the map. This map shows the early eighteenth century postal routes in the British colonies, and is frequently called the first American postal map. There are four insets, including a large map of Carolina and a plan of Charleston. On this issue, the former shows numerous additions, with Carolina divided into counties and with parishes named for the first time. At lower left is a map of Florida and the Deep South, which is based on a map by Thomas Nairne, the Indian agent for South Carolina. A printed inscription on this inset relating to the Cherokees states: "one of ye kings of this Nation was in England in 1730." The most striking feature of the map is the large vignette which gives the map its popular name. It consists of an early view of Niagara Falls, with a colony of beavers at work in the foreground. Pritchard holds that the beaver "was an appropriate image for the North American map for two reasons: the animal's importance to the fur trade, and its industrious nature."         Memoires

Amsterdam: Jean-Frederic Bernard,, 1730. Six volumes, duodecimo (175 x 95 mm). Early 19th century half calf, spines gilt in compartments with orange morocco labels, marbled sides, speckled edges. Some light rubbing round the extremities, sound and on the whole internally clean but for some minor worming, very good condition. Very scarce early edition, Ada Lovelace's copy, of the memoirs of the Duchess of Montpensier (1627?1693), the greatest heiress in 17th century France, who received the suit numerous European Kings but eventually fell in love with a (comparatively) lowly courtier and soldier. The memoirs were first printed in Paris in 1728 - any early edition is very scarce complete. Each copy bears the stamps of Ada Lovelace's now demolished Exmoor summer retreat, Ashley Combe House, and the later stamps of Ben Damph Forrest, the later sporting lodge of her husband William King, Earl of Lovelace (1805-1893).

Pritchard holds that the beaver "was an appropriate image for the North American map for two reasons: the animal's importance to the fur trade, and its industrious nature."         Aristotle on Metaphysics by Jesuit Scholar Father Timoni

Rome, 1730. Manuscript transcript of a cerebral and notable lecture on Aristotle's Metaphysica, made and given by philosophical teacher and Jesuit priest Father Jean Antoine Timoni (1690-1761), penned in a fine cursive hand by Timoni's pupil Joseph Lupius de Margon at the Roman College. Text is in Latin. 8vo. 677 pages, plus 7 page index, on laid watermarked paper. Brown calf boards, five raised bands and elaborate gilt tooling to spine, gilt title to spine, marbled edges and marbled endpapers. Volume measures approximately 14 x 20 x 4,5 cm. An exceedingly scarce primary source document. "Bibliothèque de la Compagnie de Jésus", by renowned bibliographer and Belgian Jesuit Augustin de Backer and French Jesuit scholar Carlos Sommervögel, records only one printed version of this lecture. However, a devoted and little-known eighteenth century student at the Roman College for Jesuits, attentively and meticulously transcribed the dissertation given in 1730 at the Collegio del Gesù in Rome by a distinguished Jesuit philosopher, teacher and lecturer, Father Jean Antoine Timoni (1690-1761), bestowing upon us a rare survivor of the era, and an excellent primary source manuscript work. Title: "Pars Prima Metaphysica ad mentem Aristotely et Angelici doctory Divi Thoma Aquinaty Dictata A Lectore Plurimum Ado Patie Joanne Antonio Timoni Societatiy Jesu In Celebérino Collegio Romano Philosophie Lectore Conscripts A Josepho Lupiy de Margon Alumno Coll: Germa: Anno MDCCXXX". [On Metaphysics and the Mind-set of Aristotle and Virtuous Doctor Thomas Aquinas, Given by Joanne Antonio Timoni of the Society of Jesus, in the Most Celebrated Roman College, a Philosophical Lecture Transcribed by Alumni Josepho Lupiy de Margon, ... 1730.] In this comprehensive lecture Timoni presents intellectual perspectives surrounding metaphysics, in other words, existence, environment, possibility, and all related aspects of the concept of 'being.' He presents the early and fascinating views of Aristotle, and also of thirteenth century priest Thomas Aquinas who supported Aristotle in his theories. Twelve pertinent "questions" are discussed, and for all intents and purposes answered, with the philosophical positions of the two aforementioned men whose writings were highly respected and compatible with the canonical teachings of the Catholic faith. Priest Jean Antoine Timoni (1690-1761), also seen as Johann Anton Timoni, Joanne Antonio Timoni) was born on the Greek island of Chios. He joined the Society of Jesus in Rome in 1706 as a novice. As a teacher, and sometimes also as a rector, he held regular philological and philosophical lectures at the prestigious Collegio del Gesù [Roman College of the Jesuits) situated in the Pigna District of Rome. Timoni contributed significantly to the education of novice members of the religious order. He was made vicar in 1757. He approved the publication of the work on Asceticism by Scaramelli, "Direttorio Ascetico," after having it reviewed by a committee of theologians. He continued to lecture and teach until his death. A fine and rare specimen of novitiate education at the Jesuit College in Rome in the 18th century. St Thomas Aquinas O.P. (1225-1274), Tommaso d'Aquino, was an Italian Dominican friar, Catholic priest, and Doctor of the Church. He was an immensely influential philosopher, theologian, and jurist in the tradition of scholasticism, within which he is also known as the Doctor Angelicus and the Doctor Communis. He was the foremost classical proponent of natural theology and the father of Thomism. His influence on Western thought is considerable, and much of modern philosophy developed or opposed his ideas, particularly in the areas of ethics, natural law, metaphysics, and political theory. Unlike many currents in the Church of the time, Thomas embraced several ideas put forward by Aristotle, whom he called "the Philosopher. "He attempted to synthesize Aristotelian philosophy with the principles of Christianity. The works for which he is best known are the Summa Theologiae and the Summa contra Gentiles. His commentaries on Scripture and on Aristotle form an important part of his body of work. Greek philosopher and scientist Aristotle (384-322 BC) wrote on numerous subjects, many subjects, including physics, biology, zoology, metaphysics, logic, ethics, aesthetics, poetry, theater, music, rhetoric, linguistics, politics and government. His work constitutes the first comprehensive system of Western philosophy. In metaphysics, Aristotelianism profoundly influenced Judeo-Islamic philosophical and theological thought during the Middle Ages. It continued to influence Christian theology, especially the Neoplatonism of the Early Church and the scholastic tradition of the Roman Catholic Church. Aristotle was well known among medieval Muslim intellectuals and revered as "The First Teacher." Aristotle's philosophies continue to be the object of active academic study today.

Eight parts bound in four vols. 8vo, attractive mottled calf-backed boards (some worming to final leaves of Vol. II touching some letters), spines gilt, red morocco lettering pieces on spines. The Hague: J. Swart & P. de Hondt, 1730. A rare and important sale catalogue describing the enormous collection of Samuel Huls. Bibliotheca Lambertina: seu Catalogus Librorum Bibliothecae Nicolai Lambert

Woodcut arms of Lambert on title. 2 p.l., xii, 376, [32] pp. 8vo, 19th-cent. maroon morocco, double gilt fillet round sides with gilt crowns in each corner, central arms in gilt on each cover of Joaquín Gómez de la Cortina, Marqués de Morante, spine lettered in gilt, many lower edges untrimmed. Paris: G. Martin, 1730. A fascinating copy, heavily annotated throughout in two contemporary hands, of this uncommon sale catalogue of the library of Nicolas Lambert (1666-1729), councillor to the Parlement of Paris and a high government official. This was a fine general library, rich in the best 17th and 18th-century editions of history, geography, and law. One of Martin's scarcest catalogues; 3169 lots with an excellent authors' index at end. This is perhaps the most heavily annotated auction catalogue we have ever encountered. Two hands are at work here. The first has very largely priced the catalogue. The second, smaller hand has filled many of the margins with details of additional items sold not in the printed catalogue, with prices; corrections and additions to the printed lots; and other bibliographical details. Fine copy. With the leather bookplate of Gomez de la Cortina, one of the greatest Spanish bibliophiles of the 19th century, and A.R.A. Hobson. ?

Bell'antiporta allegorica, frontespizio in rosso e nero con vignetta centrale, eleganti testate, finali e capolettera.
