Two Certified Period Manuscript Copies of the Financial Statements Regarding Wages of the Staff of the British Garrisons in Minorca and Gibraltar]: 1) Establishment of the Forces and Garrison in the Island of Minorca; 2) Regulation of Subsistance [sic!] to be paid to every Officer & Soldier in the foregoing Establishment.

1730 - Ca. 1730. Two leaves, both Folio (ca. 27,5x46,5 cm or 18 ½ x 11 in). Filled in on both sides. Brown ink on laid paper. Paper slightly browned, with some staining and tears on margins; both documents rolled. Overall in good condition. Two period 18th century manuscript copies of historically important documents regarding the wages of the staff of the British garrisons in Minorca and Gibraltar. The papers contain copies of the signatures of George II, and politicians William Clayton, Sir George Oxenden, and Sir William Yonge; they are both certified as "A true copy" by government official Richard Arnold. The first document lists the wages for the garrison of Minorca, showing per diem and annual figures separately. The document accounts for wages for a regiment of foot (commanded by Col. Cosby), including field and staff officers, for a company of infantry, and a company of grenadiers. The final figure which includes wages for eight more infantry companies and three more regiments of foot (commanded by Col. Kane, Brig. Tyrrell, and Col. Handasyd) adds up to 51,136 per year. On verso are "The Charge of the Garrison of Minorca" which accounts daily and annual payments to the officials and servants, from Governor to Signal Man; and gives separate lists of wages for the staff of Fort St. Anne and Fort St. Phillip. There is also a total figure (57,336 per year). The second document contains a "Warrant for deducting one day's pay yearly" from the British forces in Minorca and Gibraltar for the "Royal hospital near Chelsea", for the reason of "maintenance of such Superannuated & disabled Officers and Soldiers as shall be provided for therein". The official document under the signature of George II was "Given to Our Court at St. James this 4th May 1730". On verso there is a "Regulation of Subsistance [sic!] to be paid to every Officer & Soldier in the foregoing Establishment" (Minorca and Gibraltar); it lists due wages for fifteen ranks of personnel, from Colonel to Private. Overall very interesting documents detailing military matters in the recently annexed British possessions in the Mediterranean. "Under the terms of the 1713 Treaty of Utrecht Gibraltar was ceded to Britain in perpetuity, [and] Britain took possession [of Minorca] under the terms of the Article XI of the [same treaty]" (Wikipedia).

        January

London: Robert Furber, 1730. Engraving, coloured by hand, by Henry Fletcher. 16 x 12 1/8 inches. 17 5/8 x 13 1/8 inches. Gold leaf frame. A fine example of this celebrated image from Furber's renowned series titled "Twelve Months of Flowers", here with excellent contemporary hand colouring From the first edition of "a celebrated flower catalogue published by Robert Furber, a nurseryman from Kensington, then on the outskirts of London. Twelve Months of Flowers presented almost 400 different flowering species, grouped according to the month in which they flower. Reflecting in style the grand manner of the Baroque period, the flowers are arranged in elaborate bouquets and placed in elegant urns. Next to each flower appears a number, which corresponds to a name in the key printed at the bottom of the plate on either side of a cartouche inscribed with the name of one of the months of the year. Twelve Months was conceived as a flower catalogue, but its commercial function was adroitly veiled and the artistic quality of its illustrations distinguishes it from the more modest pamphlets generally produced by floriculturalists, including Furber himself, in this period. For the work Furber sought the collaboration of Pieter Casteels (1684-1749), an artist from Antwerp who had achieved great renown throughout England for his paintings of birds and flowers, which decorated the walls of many aristocratic homes. Casteels designed the plates, which were then engraved by Henry Fletcher. Dunthorne 113; Great Flower Books (1990) p.95; Henrey II, pp.343-346 & III, 733; Nissen BBI 674; Oak Spring Flora 37

Engraved with period outline colour. In superb condition with the exception of a faint waterstain along the top of the central crease. 18 3/8 x 24 5/8 inches. 18 3/4 x 24 7/8 inches. 19 7/8 x 26 1/2 inches. An important early map of the island of Hispaniola, by the celebrated French cartographer, Guillaume de L'Isle. Guillaume de l'Isle (1675-1726) was the son of a cartographer and a pupil of Jean Dominique Cassini, who, among other important contributions, aligned the study of astronomy to the study of geography. Under Cassini's direction, observations were made from locations all over the world that enabled longitudinal calculations to be made with much greater accuracy. De l'Isle carried on this exacting work with remarkable dedication and integrity, constantly revising and improving his maps. While precision was his primary goal, his maps are invariably elegant and attractive. Considered one of De L'Isle's finest maps, the chart depicts Hispaniola, now Haiti and the Dominican Republic. The Spanish never settled the entire island, though nominally it was theirs, and French buccaneers who had established strongholds along the western coasts were later joined by French planters, who wrestled away the western part from the Spanish officially in 1697 to form Saint Domingue. There through the hard work of African slaves, they established sugar plantations and refineries. The sugar industry was still in its youth when this map was first issued by De l'Isle. The political alignments changed radically several times before the present-day division was established. Moreland and Bannister, Antique Maps p. 132; Tooley's Dictionary of Mapmakers, 395

A View of the Noblemens and Gentlemens Severall Strings or Traines of Running Horses taking their exercise up the Watering Course on the Warring hill at New Market. Vue des differentes Attaches...; [AND] A View of a Horse-Match over the Long Course from the Starting Post to the Stand at New-Market. Une Perspective de Course

London & Dublin: T. Sympson and J. Lord, [circa 1730]. Line engravings (small expert repairs to margins). 11 5/8 x 16 6/8 inches approx. 14 3/8 x 20 1/4 inches approx. A fine pair from a series of four plates of Newmarket scenes after Tillemans. The four images by Tillemans were issued in two sets at about the same time: these are from the smaller of the two series. Peter Tillemans "came to England from Antwerp in 1708. His first commissions were to paint topographical views... Each required figures to give life to the well-painted landscapes and what was more natural than to show some of the people mounted... his large and busily populated pictures of Newmarket Heath have considerable charm. The influence of his friend John Wotton is most pronounced in his horse portraiture while his compositions owe something to Francis Barlow. Tillemans' patrons included all the principal race-horse owners of the period... He must have known Newmarket well, already established as the home of the turf... Tillemans' influence on later sporting artists is considerable... The engravings after his Newmarket paintings provide a fascinating record of training and horse management when the turf was developing quickly in the hands of the aristocracy of the period."         [German Village Street Scene]

1730. Scarce, Early Forerunner to Peepshow BooksYet "Engelbrecht's Work is Beyond Compare"[PEEP-SHOW BOOK aka Miniature Theater]. ENGELBRECHT, Martin (designer and engraver). [German Village Street Scene. Oktoburfest Celebrants Carouse and Make Merry]. [N.p., Ausburg]: [n.p., Christian and Martin Engelbrecht], [n.d., c. 1730]. Number thirty-six in an ongoing series of unknown total, complete, as issued. Six hand-colored, hand cut-out copperplate engravings (6 1/2 x 8 in; 167 x 204 mm) mounted on cardboard, each signed Cum Priv. S.C. Maj. (left corner), Mart. Engelbrecht excud. A.V," (right corner) and "36" (center). On the rear to each is a contemporary holograph "36-298" and number, 1 through 6, by the same hand. When consecutively mounted and arranged front to back within a display box the cut-out plates create a 3-D perspective scene. Minor edgewear, a bit of soiling as expected. Numbers two and four with early reinforcement to rear, otherwise an excellent set. Considering that it was used for entertainment purposes, it is startling to have survived the past 279 years. There are no auction records in ABPC for any of Engelbrect's peepshows/miniature theaters within the last thirty-five years and library holdings are near absent for any of them; none at all for this tableau. Housed in a custom miniature theater display box within an elegant protective case.Artist Martin Engelbrecht (1684-1756) and his brother Christian were printsellers and engravers in Augsburg, Germany during the eighteenth century. Martin Engelbrecht engraved some plates after Rugendas and other masters. His other works included illustrations for Ovid’s Metamorphoses, The War of Spanish Succession, Les Architectes Princiers by P. Decker, 92 views of Venice, and a series of prints of workers and their dress, Assemblage Nouveau Des Manouvries Habilles, published at Augsburg, circa 1730. Also in about 1730, he created cards for miniature theaters, which when inserted into a display box showed religious scenes and pictures of daily life in perspective view. Engelbrecht's miniature theaters or dioramas were the forerunners of the peepshow books popularized by Dean & Son of London during the mid-nineteenth century, and have been cited by photographers and cinematographers for their early optical effects and appreciated as an aid to creating dramatic perspective on film."A celebrated engraver of his time, Engelbrecht dominated the print trade in Augsburg. Best known for his portraits of monarchs as well as his intricate landscapes, Engelbrecht's work is beyond compare. Some of his best work was with optical prints. He used these in his perspective boxes and miniature theatres. Typically 8 cards would be inserted into a peepbox, consecutively, which provided imagery similar to that of a theatre scene, or play. The view had great perspective. (The History of the Discovery of Cinematography, Precinema).“In the 18th century dioramas became very popular as a means of entertainment. Around 1730, the Augsburg copperplate engraver and publisher Martin Engelbrecht created miniature theater[s]. [They] consist of 5-8 scenery-like sheets, which create a perspective image if arranged one behind the other. Along with religious themes, these scenes show courtly life, the seasons...These small-size dioramas are regarded as the precursors of the paper theaters that became popular in the 19th century.” (Deutsches Historisches Museum).“The first true movable books published in any large quantity were those produced by Dean & Son, a publishing firm founded in London before 1800. By the 1860's the company claimed to be the 'originator of childrens' movable books in which characters can be made to move and act in accordance with the incidents described in each story.' From the mid-19th century Dean turned its attention to the production of movable books and between the 1860's and 1900 they produced about fifty titles. To construct movable books, Dean established a special department of skilled craftsmen who prepared the hand-made mechanicals. The designers used the peep-show principle of cut-out scenes aligned one behind the other to give a three-dimensional effect. Each layer was fixed to the next by a piece of ribbon that emerged behind the uppermost portion, and when this was pulled, the whole scene sprang up into perspective.” (Montanaro, Ann. A Concise History of Pop-Up and Moveable Books).

ASIAE Recentissima Delineatio, Qua Status et Imperia Totius Orientis unacum Orientalibus Indiis exhibentur

Nuremberg: J. B. Homann, [c. 1730]. Engraving with hand-colouring. Excellent condition apart from two small spots in the Indian Ocean. 19 1/2 x 22 5/8 inches. 21 x 23 3/4 inches. An early map of Asia that includes the northern tip of Australia and Papua, New Guinea, by the celebrated German cartographer, J. B. Homann. Johann Baptiste Homann established in the early years of the 18th century the most successful map publishing firm in Germany. His prolific business, which his family continued after his death, dominated Germany's map market for over a century and produced some of the finest maps and atlases of the age. He started the firm in Nuremberg, and,in 1715, he was appointed Geographer to the Emperor. This is a lovely example of Homann's first map of Asia. It includes the northern tip of Australia (Nova Hollandia) Carpentaria, Nova Britannia and the Marianas. Hokkaido is identified as Terra Yedso and the fictional Compagnie Land, to the northeast of Japan. Dampier's passage shown stretching between New Guinea and New Britain and marks his discovery of New Britain in 1700. The map is a wonderful example of Homann's ornate, Baroque style. The title cartouche shows an Asian potentate pointing his scepter at three subjects, who bow on their hands and knees before him. The other cartouche in the upper right corner with a note to the viewer shows a procession of soldiers carrying a Hindu idol followed by men playing gongs, drums and wind instruments.         Globi Coelestis in Tabulas Planas Redacti Pars V in qua Longitudines Stellarum fixarum ad anum Christi completum 1730 tam Arithmetice quam Geometrice exhibentur

Nuremburg: J. B. Homann, circa 1730. Hand-coloured engraving. Good condition, margins re-backed to restore several minor losses and tears. 19 1/4 x 23 inches. 21 1/4 x 24 3/4 inches. A dramatic star chart by Doppelmayr illustrating the early winter zodiacal signs: Scorpio, Sagittarius, and part of Capricorn Johann Gabriel Doppelmayr (1677-1750) was a Nuremberg astronomer and mapmaker, who made globes, star charts, moon charts and completed Homann's Atlas Coelestis in 1742. This is part V of a group of six showing the entire panorama of the night sky as known and represented in the early 18th century. The stars are differentiated according to magnitude, and there is an extensive star index on each side of the chart. Johann Batiste Homann (1663-1724) began his professional life as an engraver for others, founding his own cartographical firm in 1702. He brought back to life German mapmaking, which virtually ceased in the early 16th century, using Dutch cartography as his guide and starting point.

An Essay upon Poetry and Painting with Relation to the Sacred and Profane History. With an appendix concerning obscenity in writing

London: F. Fayram, 1730 First edition. Contemporary paneled calf, expertly rebacked, . Twelvemo. A very good copy. Charles Lamotte (1681?-1741) is known almost solely for the present work; he receives no mention in the D.N.B. There is, however, a substantial entry on him in the Dictionary of Eighteenth-Century British Philosophers. John Valdimir Price writes: "Lamotte's concern...is with 'License' or what other aestheticians called decorum. Poets and painters are allowed 'some Degree of Licence,' but the analogies and linkings that they make should never venture into absurdity or anachronism. The proper enjoyment of painting or drama depends on an awareness of its fidelity to historical truth and of its consonance with the general experience of mankind." Price goes on, "...he never loses sight of the power of painting or poetry to corrupt and to deprave," but notes that "there is a refreshing lack of cant and proselytizing in his work." A second edition appeared in Dublin in 1742.
