Tarikh al-Hindi al-Gharbi [A History of the Western Indies].

Qustantaniyah (Istanbul), Ibrahim Müteferrika, mid-Ramazan 1142 AH [= 1730 AD].. 4to (213 x 163 mm). (3), 91 ff. With 4 double-page engraved plates (celestial chart, diagram with table, 2 world maps) and 13 woodcut illustrations in the text. Papered spine. Loosely inserted in contemporary-style giltstamped full calf binder with fore-edge flap.. Rare first edition of this illustrated history of the New World in Ottoman Turkish: the first book published in Turkey to contain illustrations, the oldest book about the New World published in the Ottoman empire, and one of the first titles printed by a Muslim in Turkey. "Although ascribed in Turkish bibliographies to one Mehmed Ibn Hasan üs-Su'udi, the authorship is uncertain [...] Despite the title, this is not a history of the West Indies. It opens with a general geographical and cosmological discussion, and follows with an account of the discovery of the New World, with considerable fantastic elaboration in the spirit of the more fabulous passages of Abu Hamid and Qazwini. Among the illustrations are depictions of trees whose fruits are in human form, long-snouted horses, mermen at battle with land-dwellers, and other men and beasts of nightmarish aspect" (Watson). The present work, which survives in a number of mss. (though in less complete variants than this printed edition), was composed in Istanbul around 1580 by an unidentified author. After a synthesis of Islamic geographical and cosmographical writings (notably drawing from al-Mas'udi, who is the most frequently cited source, and Ibn al-Wardi, mentioned almost 20 times), the book relates the discovery of the New World. It is this Chapter 3, which comprises the final two thirds of the text, in which the author describes the explorations and discoveries by Columbus, Balboa, Magellan, Cortes and Pizarro. As Goodrich's study of the Tarih-i Hind-i garbi's sources shows, this section is derived directly from Italian editions of 16th-century texts - particularly works by Lopez de Gomara, Peter Martyr, Agustin de Zarate, and Oviedo - which the author excerpted, rearranged, and translated into Turkish. The history of their discoveries is enlivened with fantastic elaboration, some of which is visible in the woodcuts. The two world maps derive from those in Mercator-Hondius Atlas minor and reappear in Katib Celebi's Jihannma atlas, printed by Müteferrika two years later, with California represented as an island. Complete copies are rare: the book was printed in an edition of only 500 copies, many of which were subsequently defaced or destroyed for contravening the Islamic dictum against representing living things. Toderini seems to have called for an astronomical chart in addition to the 4 plates, but Watson describes an astronomical chart and 3 plates. Sabin calls for 3 plates only, as does the John Carter Brown library catalogue. The Bibliotheque nationale copy, sent from Constantinople by the press's patron, Sad Aga, contains 4 plates, as does the present copy, including the Ptolemaic astronomical chart. - The "Tarikh al-Hindi al-Gharbi" is only the fourth book printed in the Arabic alphabet in the Ottoman empire, the product of Ibraham Müteferrika, a Hungarian convert to Islam who believed he could help to arrest the decline of the Ottoman empire through his printing press. He established his press in 1729 in the palace of the Grand Vizier Ibrahim Pasha beneath the Sublime Porte and was granted a license to print all but religious works (which remained the province of scribes). - First two leaves remargined. Old annotations in Arabic script to front flyleaves; contemp. Turkish stamps to recto of final leaf of prelims and verso of last leaf as well as to title (here, additional notes in red and blue pencil). Some waterstaining and worming throughout, mainly confined to margins and gutter; a few plates show traces of professionally restored tears. - John Carter Brown 463. Toderini III, 41. Karatay 250. Sabin 94396. William J. Watson, "Ibrahim Müteferrika and Turkish Incunabula," in: Journal of the American Oriental Society 88, no. 3 (1968), pp. 435-441, no. 4. OCLC 416474553. Cf. T. D. Tienjing Huowen [in Japanese: Tenkei Wakumon; trans.: Questions and Answers on Astronomy]

19 woodcut illus. (ten double-page). 43; 52; 52; 41 folding leaves. Four vols. 8vo, orig. wrappers (bindings a little wormed, some marginal worming to text carefully repaired), orig. block printed title label on each upper cover, new stitching. Tokyo: Yorozuya, 1730. First edition to be printed in Japan of this rare and important astronomical and geographical text which exercised a profound influence on Japanese astronomy and geography. There was an extremely rare edition printed in China -- no copy seems to have survived in its native country -- in 1672 (or 1675). The present edition consists of three volumes in Chinese and a fourth supplementary volume in Japanese, entitled Tengaku shogaku mondo, written by Seikyu Nishikawa (1693-1756). "The Tianjing huowen, brought to Japan about 1672-79, combined ancient Chinese theories, the theories of the natural philosopher Zhu Xi (1130-1200), and the recent philosophical opinions of Fang Yizhi (1611-71) with knowledge that had been obtained from the Jesuits. Although the Tianjing huowen did not receive much attention in China, it was widely available in Japan and inspired many explanatory and critical books, especially after Nishikawa Masayasu (1693-1756) published the first Japanese version in 1730. Of particular importance was its illustration of the stars around the South Pole, which had not been shown on previous celestial maps; the book therefore provided the Japanese with their first knowledge of such stars."-Miyajima, "Japanese Celestial Cartography before the Meiji Period" in History of Cartography, Vol. 2, No. 2, p. 585. This treatise was allowed to be imported into Japan and printed by the censors "because of its purely astronomical nature. Although it is in effect a treatise on Western astronomy, it contains no elements of Christianity. During the Tokugawa period everyone with an interest in astronomy read it."-Nakayama, A History of Japanese Astronomy, p. 101 (& see pp. 101-04). "The Chinese text most influential in Japan was the T'ien-ching huo-wen...authored by Yu I, who studied under the prominent scholar Hsiung Ming-yü, a close friend of the Portuguese Jesuit Manoel Dias (1574-1648)...The T'ien-ching huo-wen was brought to Japan after its first printing in China and was already widely known before the first Japanese reprint appeared in 1730...Very popular among Japanese intellectuals, it was reprinted many times with commentaries and was viewed as a classic in astronomy -- partly because of the scarcity of such works."-Sugimoto & Swain, Science & Culture in Traditional Japan, p. 261. Harumi Shibukawa (1639-1715), "one of the greatest astronomers to have lived in Japan" (Miyajima, p. 588), based his knowledge of Western astronomy entirely on the Chinese edition of the present text; he was "especially impressed by its clear explanation, using a geometrical model, of eclipses, which he had never found in Chinese calendrical writings."-D.S.B., XII, p. 404. Tienjing Huowen is partly based on the work of the Jesuit scholars in China, members of the Jesuit missions sent from Rome from the sixteenth century onwards. Matteo Ricci and Ferdinand Verbiest were the most notable of these missionary-scientists who brought western knowledge of astronomy and other disciplines to China. The following Jesuits in China are specifically mentioned in the text: Matteo Ricci, Giacomo Rho, Manoel Dias, Niccolo Longobardo, and Jan Mikolaj Smogulecki. The identification of the South Polar stars, particularly the South Star (sigma Octanis), barely visible to the naked eye and sitting directly overhead the Earth's South Pole, is important. Knowing its location is the key to understanding the workings of all the stars of the Southern Hemisphere since it is the South Star that these stars circle every night. This information is crucial for navigation and map-making. The geographical maps are of particular interest: four separate maps form a double-hemisphere world map, including a southern hemisphere with a very distinctively-shaped Australia joined to a southern continent. The celestial and world maps here are entirely based on the work of Ricci and Verbiest. Nice set, preserved in a box. ❧ D.S.B., XV, p. 733. .

Manuscript on vellum, in Spanish. [Appointment to the office of alguacil mayor]

Cordoba, Spain, 1730. Oblong folio (31.5 x 42.5 cm; 12.5" x 16.5" ). [1] f. Juan Carlos de Benavides y Mesia, a citizen of Baeza and a familiar of the Holy Office, is appointed to the post of alguacil mayor ("chief justice") of the Inquisition. The appointment was made on 13 May and carried with it not only the power and responsibilities of the office but considerable privileges and exemptions. It was a much coveted position. Written in sepia ink in a clear italic hand surrounded by a calligraphic border accomplished in red and green, this has the symbol of the Inquisition at the center top in green and yellow with the symbol of the Dominican Order to its left and right in brown ink. The signatures of three Inquisitors and an Inquisition notary appear large and clear, and the paper and wax seal is present. The verso of the document has, in a clear notarial hand in black ink, the registration of the appointment; this, too, is => impressive to look at. Very good condition.

An Essay upon Poetry and Painting with Relation to the Sacred and Profane History. With an appendix concerning obscenity in writing

London: F. Fayram, 1730 First edition. Contemporary paneled calf, expertly rebacked, . Twelvemo. A very good copy. Charles Lamotte (1681?-1741) is known almost solely for the present work; he receives no mention in the D.N.B. There is, however, a substantial entry on him in the Dictionary of Eighteenth-Century British Philosophers. John Valdimir Price writes: "Lamotte's concernâ?¦is with 'License' or what other aestheticians called decorum. Poets and painters are allowed 'some Degree of Licence,' but the analogies and linkings that they make should never venture into absurdity or anachronism. The proper enjoyment of painting or drama depends on an awareness of its fidelity to historical truth and of its consonance with the general experience of mankind." Price goes on, "â?¦he never loses sight of the power of painting or poetry to corrupt and to deprave," but notes that "there is a refreshing lack of cant and proselytizing in his work." A second edition appeared in Dublin in 1742.

"To the philo Gentou reader ... I present thee here, worthy reader with the rudiments of a Gentoo-grammar..."

Madras. 1730. "A very early unpublished manuscript on the Gentoo (Telugu) language, written in English and Gentoo, by an early missionary to India, almost certainly the German Lutheran missionary, Benjamin Schultze (see below). Small 4to (21 x 16 cm), 294 red-ruled pages, neatly written in ink; uncut; the whole bound in late 18th century polished calf, gilt rules on covers, gilt-decorated spine in 6 compartments, red morocco label (""Gentou & English Grammar"") in 1; 2 leaves excised at the front; minor wear at the extremities, internally near fine. Ex-Earls of Macclesfield, with the engraved North Library bookplate on the front pastedown, and 2 or 3 Macclesfield pressure stamps.& & The 10-page preface gives an inkling of the circumstances surrounding the compilation of this manuscript, and offers as well several hints as to its authorship. & & ""Whilst I open the way to teach this language, I desire to be understood not to give a full and perfect acct. of it but to manifest briefly & in Epitome ye most compendious method, whereby thou mayst attain it in a short time. And to deal plainly with thee, I ingenuously confess, that as I never had it in Design to invent a Grammar, so much less was it my purpose to leave Tranquebar & come to Madras fore sake of making one in ye Gentoo Language: for when I took leave of my Friends in Tranquebar, I preached for 6 Months every where on ye Coast of Coremandel ye Gospel of Christ & ye Kingdom of Heaven to such as spoke Tamile or Malabar Language, which indeed was my intent in undertaking this Journey. And in my progress of it (as appears by my Diary in High Dutch) making my residence at Madras or Fort St. George, I had here set up a School for Malabar and Gentoo Children, several months before I had ye Thought to examine in to ye Gentoo- Language, but ye Circumstances of ye School oblige me to learn ye Gentoo- Language also for ye Benefit of ye Boys in it. The Tamilie or Malabarian Bible by God's Assistance was already translated & wholly finish'd before my Departure from Tranquebar on this Expedition into ye Territories of ye great Mogul, as also as I had translated Seber's Garden of the Bible into Malabars at liesure hours in ye time of my travel I made likewise a version of ye English Liturgy into ye same Language; Thus finish'd with Books & Epitomes in ye Malabar Tongue, I steer'd my course to Madras to try in this City to find a soil for serving ye word of God, ye Seed of Life, in it.""& & A Grammatica Telugica was compiled in Madras in 1728 by the German Lutheran missionary, Benjamin Schultze, in Latin and Telugu. This grammar remained in manuscript for more than two-and-a-half centuries, and was not published until 1984. Schultze arrived in India in 1719 and relocated to Madras to establish an English mission in 1726 and worked on completing Bartholomäus Ziegenbalg's Bible translations into Tamil and then Bible translations into Telugu. & & The reference to ""my diary in High Dutch,"" and other references about his removal to Madras and the establishment of a school points directly to Schultze. Furthermore, the handwriting compares very favorably with no less than six other Schultze manuscripts now at the Franckesche Stiftungen, in Halle, Germany. & & Benjamin Schultze was born in Brandenburg in 1689. He studied at Halle, landed at Madras in January, 1719, went back to Germany in 1743 worked as the Director of the orphan House in Halle for 17 years and died in 1760 aged 71 years. In India, he learned Tamil, Telugu, Sanscrit and Hindusthani languages. Of the total 24 years of his stay in Tamilnadu, Schultze spent 16 years in Madras from 1728 to 1743. During this period, Madras was dominated by Telugu people and the entire population consisted of many other Indian and foreign citizens, as well. Schultze was wont to go out and mingle with various kinds of people in Madras on a daily basis, and noted down in his diaries his observations in the Telugu language. He took with him his Telugu diaries to Germany in 1743, read them through for 8 years, and published in 1750 his observations in a book titled Madras Stadt... first in a German language edition, and then in English which was titled The Large and Renowned Town of the English Nation in the East Indies upon the coast of Coromandel Madras or Fort St. George...written originally in the Waruga or Gentou Language, but afterwards translated into the English tongue, for the benefit of some curious readers. This book was a unique publication - a product of a German writing in Telugu and then translating in English via his German version (see C.S. Mohanavelu, ""Lifestyle of the Madrasis During the 18th Century as Reported by the German Missionary Schultze: A Few Aspects""). & & This offers an interesting parallel to the present grammar, as his original 1728 Grammatica Telugica, written in Telugu and Latin, is here recast into Telugu and English, for the benefit of other curious readers in the English market which it never reached. & & This is an extensive work, laid out in 8 chapters, detailing the Gentoo alphabet, structure and variation of the letters, reading and pronunciation, a 17-page Gentoo-English word list in triple column giving pronunciations, declensions, numerals and numbering, plus sections on nouns, adjectives, adverbs, verbs, participles, moods and tenses, particles, and syntax. This is followed by a 22-page appendix giving the Apostles' Creed, The Lord's Prayer, and the first chapter of Genesis in Gentoo and English.& & See also Darlow & Moule, pp. 1587-88 who point out that Schultze translated the whole Bible into Telugu, 1726-32, but the translation never made it into print. It was not until 1812 that the earliest printed edition of any book of the Bible in Telugu finally appeared.& & "

Ecclesiastes, sive Concionator Evangelicus. Liber Primus. De Dignitate, Difficultate, Pietate, Puritate, Pridentia caeterisque virtutibus Ecclesiastae.Cui praefigitur Dissertatio Praeliminaris. RARE BRAY 'ERASMUS'

Prostant venales apud J. Brotherton ad Insigne Bibliorum Sacrorum in Vico Cornhill 1730 - 8vo., First and Sole Edition thus, on laid paper, text in Latin, with several fine woodcut head- and tail-pieces, some slight age-staining (mainly marginal, more pronounced on a handful of leaves); contemporary marbled boards, very neatly rebacked in calf to style, back with four raised bands, second compartment with red leather label lettered in gilt, a remarkably, fresh, crisp, clean copy. First published in 1535, the 'Ecclesiastes' is Erasmus' last and longest work, a detailed treatise on preaching and the offices and duties of priesthood. O'Malley deems it 'a major monument - perhaps the major monument - in the history of sacred rhetoric. Its only rival is the De Doctrina Christiana of Augustine' (Erasmus and the History of Sacred Rhetoric: The Ecclesiastes of 1535).Bray's extended (25pp) introduction begins in typically exuberant fashion - 'Jesu & Omnia!', dedicating the printing to Edmund [Gibson], Bishop of London [1669-1748] and Edward, Bishop of Coventry and Lichfield. Erasmus' famous preface, revealing his responses to the deaths of More, Fisher, Wareham and Mountjoy, is given in full. Thomas Bray (1656-1730), Commissary of Maryland and founder of SPCK, did much to spread abroad knowledge of significant religious works. 'It was a great service to the cause of Christian knowledge', undertaken for no reward and with 'unspeakable labour and fatigue'.Rare. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Icon Crateris Neapolitani

Naples. Map. Engraving. Image measures 24.75 x 36.5". The incredible rarity of this map of the Gulf of Naples by Filippo Morghen is matched only by its incredibly stunning design and execution. The body of the map consists of an exquisitely detailed topographical rendering of the Gulf region that shows, in particular, its famous volcanoes. Notes scattered throughout the map provide more information about the regions history and landscape. At the center of the map is an ornate compass rose with north to the upper left and rhumb lines extending out to the surrounding coasts. An inset in the upper left of the map describes the iconography of ancient Naples, and an inset in the upper right contains a Puetinger Table, or illustrated road map. While this informative map is impressive in itself, it is outshone on this sheet by the view below it, which shows the eruption of the famed Mount Vesuvius. In front of this background of bursting lava and billowing smoke are views of ancient Neapolitan buildings, ruins, and sculptures. Along either side of the map is an Index of Neapolitan Antiquities, written in Latin. The map is in good condition with minor overall soiling. Wide margins with no chips or tears. Staining particularly in left and right indexes, not affecting the main image. The Florentine artist Filippo Morgen (1730--1807) was one of the most significant Italian engravers of the second half of the 18th century. Based in Naples, he produced a range of archaeological illustrations and views of Naples that found success with noblemen and tourists alike. This rare map, as a combination of Morghen's various skills, typifies the work for which he is famous.

(World Map- Eastern Hemisphere): Orbis Veteribus Noti Tabula Nova Auctore Guillelmo DeL'Isle

Amsterdam: Covens & Mortier , 1730. VG, scarce, hand colored on heavy paper. A small stain at right upper corner at far edge of a generous margin. Minimal chipping at upper and right edges. Lower centerfold tear barely noticeable and repaired verso with archival tape. A handsome map of the eastern hemisphere, with just the shell of western Australia, Madagascar under its old name (Menuthias Island), after De L'Isle. The date is approximate, as the combined house of Covens and Mortier began about 1721, and was a prominent force in Dutch mapmaking. The image is a globe of 18.5 inches in diameter..
