        Les poesies

A Paris: De l'imprimerie de Antoine Urbain Coustelier, 1724. Fine. De l'imprimerie de Antoine Urbain Coustelier, A Paris 1724, In-12 (9,5x15,5cm), (4) 231pp. et (4) 204pp. (4), reliés. - New edition Binding full glossy golden calf contemporary. spine finely decorated nerves. Part of title and volume number morocco beige. Headdress head of Volume I miss wearing caps and tail of two volumes rather clumsily restored. Coins strongly blunted and damaged.

- 8vo. (16), 570, (54) pp. Title printed in red and black. With engr. frontispiece, engr. title vignette, 1 folding engr. map, and 3 engr. plates. Contemp. brown full calf with richly gilt spine in six compartments. Marbled endpapers. All edges red. First edition of this missionary history of India, based not only on the works of Goueva, Geddes, Bernier, and Tavernier, but also on the manuscripts of Ziegenbalg, whose Danish mission is described on pp. 536-566. Includes an account of the trial and execution of a King of Ormuz for sodomy, "un peché infame fort connu à Rome aussi-bien qu'en Orient" (p. 340), and a defence of Islam against the common charge of being a religion established and maintained through war and violence (p. 525). The author "questions the logic of corrupt Portuguese authority over good Indians; religion is merely a pretext for European domination, it would be more appropriate for the Indian subjects to give religious instruction to their European rulers" (Teltscher). The plates show the Hindu godheads Brahma, Ishvara (Shiva), and Vishnu. - Binding slightly rubbed; hinges weakened. Occasional slight foxing.         An important early description of economic conditions in the French fortress town of Louisbourg, Nova Scotia, only 11 years after its founding

Louisbourg, Nova Scotia, December 4, 1724. 7" x 8.5". "Autograph Letter Signed, ""Wm. Verplanck,"", 3 pages, 7"" x 8.5"", ""Louisbourgh,"" December 4, 1724, addressed in his hand on the integral transmittal leaf to Boston merchant Jacob Wendell (1691-1761) concerning the state of trade at the French stronghold on Cape Breton only eleven years after the town's founding. Slight toning along expected folds, two minor losses from seal tear, partial separation at bottom corner of third page, a pair of paper labels affixed to integral address leaf, else very good.A fascinating letter offering an early analysis, from an outsider's perspective, on the economic conditions (and opportunities) of the still new French settlement in Canada. The letter reads, in large part, [with period spellings retained with minimal comment]: ""...Meeting with this unexpected opportunity of a Sloop that has been detained here some time on acct of her having been up the River to Canada I once more take the freedom to recom[m]end what I wrote you concerning the trade in these parts, they Sell their lead and Small Shott for Fouling at ye rate of 12 Sous, which is abt 18d New Engl[an]d Money & ye quantity and the other goods I mentioned in my letter will also fetch a good price?" I have several times had in my thoughts to write you concerning a Vessel coming directly to Louisbourgh from Holland your Correspondent there might easily procure a french Vessell or a part one of Yours of at 80 or 100 tonns und[er] a French Mast[?] and So come directly from Holland Manufactory Sold here to good advantage as Cordage Lines and ... You may by this means have also many things that Cannot come via Cows[?]as Lace &c which you are but acquainted with all which can be easily forwarded via Canno[?] ... there is so large especially tow[ar]d the fall of ye Year when many return doth[?] Refuse fish to Boston. The ship might come here in May June or July and so load doth[?] merchantable Fish for some port of France which always turn to better account than any part of the Straights and My little business from New York will facilitate her Quick Despatch the Inhabitants here being very desirous of my Staying among them on account of my Supplying many things from New York that are acceptable in these parts ?" and I believe the Govt is as much my friend as I can desire, I am very well assured I could Serve you or any Gentlem[e]n in Holland in such an affair even beyond any of the Inhabitants here and its very easy for your Correspondent in Holland to get this managed to good a[d]vantage there being Dutch factors in all parts of France did I know to whom to make a proper application In Holland I would write a letter at large on this Subject, but if you will do me that Favor with a word of recom[m]endation I am assured it will be more Effectual and w[ould] shorten my stay in these parts of the World...""Named for Louis XIV, France established a town and fortress at Louisbourg in part due to its mostly ice-free harbor and its proximity to the great Atlantic cod fishery. The fortifications took 28 years to construct costing 30 million livres, which led Louis XIX to joke that he should have been able to view the peaks of the buildings from Versailles. The fortress, along with the citadel at Quebec, were the two strongest points protecting French Canada. The British besieged it twice. In 1745 a large force of New England troops would successfully take the fort, only to see it, much to their consternation, returned to France at the conclusion of the War of Austrian Succession (or in North America, King George's War). During the Seven Years (or French and Indian) War, British regulars would successfully take the stronghold in 1758 (Quebec would fall the next year). Within a decade, the British had completely demolished the fortress, abandoning it in 1768. The recipient of this letter, Jacob Wendell, was born in Albany to Johannes Wendell and Elisee Staats. At age fourteen his family sent him to New York to learn business. He was soon sent by his New York mentor to Boston to the house of John Mico, where he found commercial success on his own. Over the next several decades, Wendell rose in Boston's economic and political circles. He was a major land speculator, participating in numerous real estate ventures with his childhood friend Philip Livingston (father of the Signer). Other members of the Wendell family followed Jacob to Boston, further establishing the family in that city. Wendell is the grandfather of poet Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr., (1809-1894) and his son, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. (1841-1935), the Supreme Court Justice. "

Brunet, IV, 1071.

Contemp. brown full calf with richly gilt spine in six compartments. Marbled endpapers. All edges red..         The Virgin Unmask'd: or, Female Dialogues Betwixt an Elderly Maiden Lady and her Niece on several Diverting Discourses on love, marriage, memoirs, and morals, &c. of the Times

London: Printed, and sold by G. Strahan...and J. Stragg, 1724 Second edition of Mandeville's first prose work in English, which was originally published in 1709, and his first foray into social commentary. The third edition of 1731 was a reissue of the second, with a cancel title-page. A fourth was published in 1742. We do not know if there are any changes between the first and second editions, though this was the last setting of type published in Mandeville's lifetime. All early editions are scarce: of the present edition, ESTC notes six copies in the British Isles and nine in North America. Contemporary paneled calf, rebacked to style, with gilt red morocco label, edges sprinkled red. . Octavo. A little light foxing. A very good copy. Bernard Mandeville (1670-1733) was born at Dordrecht, Holland. After attending the University of Leiden and earning a medical degree, he came to England to learn the language, but ended up staying. He is best known for The Fable of the Bees, which was first published as a 433-line poem under the title, The Grumbling Hive, or Knaves Turn'd Honest in 1705, but was expanded into a 228-page prose work in 1714. It gave immediate offense and has always been characterized as false, cynical and degrading, though it was very popular for years and later critics have pointed out the acuteness of the writer's perceptions, as well as the vigor of his style. It influenced Berkely, who replied to it in the second dialogue of Alciphron, as well as Samuel Johnson, Adam Smith, and the Utilitarians
